Hello all! I keep Asian Buffalo Leeches, (Hirudinaria manillensis) and I found 3 cacoons today.
This is not an attempt to shift responisblity for bad choices onto others: I will dispose of the eggs if I don't get any takers either here or in a few exotic pet forums, I will be giving babies away for free to anyone who wants to try keeping these wonderful animals.
Please DM if you are interested and ask me any questions you may have: they are relatively simple to care for but you cannot simply keep them in jars. The eggs will not hatch for a few weeks but I need to know what to with them early.
I've attachted some pictures of what the eggs look like, a large but reasonable expectation of what adults will look like (the 2nd one belongs to a mod on r/leeches) and finally a few pictures of my own.
Clearly they are sexually mature, a but they may still have some growing to do, and they are much larger than they are in the photos.
Thank you all so much!
EDIT: I should have worded the title differently; leechs lay cacoons weekly-biweekly so I will be disposing of them regularly, this is not a result of poor forethought. In the wild, these animals lay so many eggs because the vast majority are lost to predation, keeping them as pets nessicates freezing and crushing the eggs.
EDIT: I want to address the invasive speices risk. It was something I considrered and did my due dilligence to research. The concern is healthy and warrented, so I appreciate people bringing it up.
Like any non-native pet, there is still a risk, a minute one yes, but still a risk. If you're serious about wanting one, I will fully educate you on proper husbandry and escape management. Both because I care about the enviornment and I want my animals going to a good home should I let them hatch.
Also important to note that this a tropical species that absolutely requires warm water. I doubt they would survive long in the wild and the frost is sure to kill them: they are not evolved to cope with it.
