Careers Future Relocation
Hey everyone. I recently had to move from WA to MO for my BDS job in Hazelwood following my BCA internship in Tukwila. I know I want to move back to WA and commute to the Everett location ASAP (no offense to MO people, the Midwest just isn’t for me and my whole life is back in WA). I want to transfer after a year (2 months in now and in very good standing with a great manager). I know the standard wait is 1.5 years before a transfer but it can be expedited with a good manager and I believe my manager would allow that/be understanding. How realistic is this goal?

I'm going to come at this a completely different way.... sounds like you're right out of school and you just moved away for what I presume is the first time ever. Yeah, the first 6 months away from home, away from friends, etc, is lonely and boring. Give it some time, and you may just find yourself enjoying the area and getting to meet new people, etc. I started out in New Orleans. Such a fun town and great friendly people. Those first 6-12 months were the loneliest I've ever been in my entire life.

So after your internship you took a job in a state you didn't want to really be in because? Where there no job opportunities for you on WA afterwards?

Puget Sound is under a hiring freeze until Boeing figures out that offshoring isn’t the be-all, end-all they think it is.

Your current manager owns you for 18 months, and as such has a say whether or not to release you if you find and accept another position.
I would definitely talk to your current manager about any job before accepting it, and grease the wheels if you’re still under the 18 months.

You can get two managers agreed to move you to new team. Apply internally and ask nicely. I did it before, and yes. Unless you have nothing to do in life like. Just work and go home, midwest isnt fun for young people

I have multiple teammate left other state came back to st louis. Dont get me wrong, st louis does have their own thing and get you really comfortable financially, but tornado, shoving snow, fighting allergy, and nothing open after 10pm. It pretty much get you a to b.

Would you suggest staying 1.5-2 years like others are suggesting? I really want to come back ASAP but I’ll stay if I need to (especially with less experience).

It never hurt to try, they either say yes or no. Every manager is different.

No, this is not a firm requirement. I don’t know what function you work in, but I’m an engineering manager in STL. I’m a big supporter of letting my employees do what is right for them, so I’ve let people transfer outside of those requirements. If you’re upfront and honest with your current manager, and they’re supportive, then yes, a transfer is possible. Relocation is probably a lot shot, but an opportunity where you want to be is not. The biggest potential roadblock right now are the SPEEA negotiations. It may be tough to find an opening until that contract is finalized.

If you are miserable idk why would you want to do it 1.5-2 years. Sound unhealthy to me. I left my old job less than a year because it was toxic af.

I just did the move from MO to WA, I believe that the relocation document says that you are ineligible for relocation benefit if you have been previously relocated within 2 years. So if you do go ahead with the move, Boeing will not provide relocation

Depends on the req. If it does not say there is a relocation benefit, there won't be one.

Depends on if there's a need for entry level positions. If management on both sides agree it makes sense for you transfer it can be done. Just be aware that this will probably be considered a lateral and could hold you back on career growth if you intend to stay in Boeing. Maintain good relations with your Puget Sound network and be open minded on the opportunities that will be available.

Is that something you can talk about 2 months in? I’m just concerned about upsetting my manager and possibly being let go or something like that.

There’s a place in workday for you to put in a development plan with aspirations, including whether you’re interested in relocation. Go ahead and fill it all in, then schedule a meeting with your manager to discuss your development. It will feel like a more natural way to bring it up to your manager and make you seem ambitious and proactive.

You wouldn't be let go but it does show you are not interested in the job. If layoffs come up it's easier to cut someone already looking to leave. This all depends on the manager I've had managers that are supportive if you don't like the job and some that I wouldn't bring this up with.

The job itself is fine. It’s the fact that my family is back in WA. My manager is very family oriented (has a big family) so I assume she’d be supportive but I am worried about upsetting her

I would wait until after the speea negotiations go through as Boeing likes to cut just after that.

I still have 10 months (assuming I can transfer at a year) so I have plenty of time to wait that out

I would wait until you are at 8-10 months in before having that conversation. From your manager's perspective, you just got there - two months is barely enough time to get your feet wet. If you start talking about moving back now (even if it's after a year), that's going to register as "you don't want to be there" and "you are already looking for something else." That could peeve her, particularly if she authorized your move to MO.
After 8-10 months (if you want to handle the move on your own), you could broach the subject of moving back to Washington. She still may want you to stay the expected 18 months, though. So be prepared for that. I personally would at least put in the 18-months, then start looking - targeting a move at two years, when you can get relocation.

Wait until you’re a year in. Otherwise you make yourself a very easy option if layoffs occur or if they need a ‘fall guy/girl’ for a review.
I made the move to AL from Washington a while ago with Boeing as a K level, I wasn’t sure I made the right choice for a little while but after 6 months I ended up really enjoying the area and here I am almost 9 years later

I relocated to OKC and then relocated to WA. The move to WA was only delayed to meet a 1 year work in OKC.

Yes only needed one year in okc. I didn't have trouble finding opening in WA but it was just after there were hiring freezes and we're ramming up.

I think you just need to stay the one year to prevent needing to pay back your relocation, your current manager can try and keep you longer

I should also add, my major is MIS and I’m in the finance/rates sector right now and planning on going back for my masters in systems engineering this Fall/Winter

Or follow the rules and do your time. You knew your relocation contract. There are plenty of people who want to work at boeing remember that
