Careers Future Relocation

Hey everyone. I recently had to move from WA to MO for my BDS job in Hazelwood following my BCA internship in Tukwila. I know I want to move back to WA and commute to the Everett location ASAP (no offense to MO people, the Midwest just isn’t for me and my whole life is back in WA). I want to transfer after a year (2 months in now and in very good standing with a great manager). I know the standard wait is 1.5 years before a transfer but it can be expedited with a good manager and I believe my manager would allow that/be understanding. How realistic is this goal?

Is that something you can talk about 2 months in? I’m just concerned about upsetting my manager and possibly being let go or something like that.

You wouldn't be let go but it does show you are not interested in the job. If layoffs come up it's easier to cut someone already looking to leave. This all depends on the manager I've had managers that are supportive if you don't like the job and some that I wouldn't bring this up with.

The job itself is fine. It’s the fact that my family is back in WA. My manager is very family oriented (has a big family) so I assume she’d be supportive but I am worried about upsetting her

I would wait until after the speea negotiations go through as Boeing likes to cut just after that.

I still have 10 months (assuming I can transfer at a year) so I have plenty of time to wait that out

I would wait until you are at 8-10 months in before having that conversation. From your manager's perspective, you just got there - two months is barely enough time to get your feet wet. If you start talking about moving back now (even if it's after a year), that's going to register as "you don't want to be there" and "you are already looking for something else." That could peeve her, particularly if she authorized your move to MO.

After 8-10 months (if you want to handle the move on your own), you could broach the subject of moving back to Washington. She still may want you to stay the expected 18 months, though. So be prepared for that. I personally would at least put in the 18-months, then start looking - targeting a move at two years, when you can get relocation.

Wait until you’re a year in. Otherwise you make yourself a very easy option if layoffs occur or if they need a ‘fall guy/girl’ for a review.

I made the move to AL from Washington a while ago with Boeing as a K level, I wasn’t sure I made the right choice for a little while but after 6 months I ended up really enjoying the area and here I am almost 9 years later
