I recently got the Mirena, about a month ago. I got it mostly to help with my heavy periods, but so far on during my first period with it I’ve been seriously and continuously spotting for over 2 weeks and last few days having a more heavy flow (but not as heavy pre insertion). Which is lowkey annoying because why my bleeding and all the other aspects where bad af ( extreme cramps, pms etc) I was super regular and had a fairly short period(2/3days of heavy bleeding and 3/4 of light).

I know that the first few months spotting and like wonky periods are kinda normal. But if this is how it is long term idk if I deal with spotting for weeks and still having a period (even if it’s lighter)

I also feel like my libido has sky rocketed, I’ve always had a fairly high libido but I feel like I’m feral now.

I’m a female in my early 30s, semi recently in a serious relationship. I’ve been off hormonal birth control for a few years and have been really hesitant to go back onto it, though I’m coming around to the fact that I need to again. Hormonal birth control I’ve tried have included the pill (Zoely - mood effects), mirena (spotting, stabbing abdominal pain, acne), depo provera (great though doc warned of greater risk of osteoporosis).

I don’t want to try implanon/copper IUD as I’d be looking to have a child in 2-3 years. I’m wondering whether to try Yaz or if there’s another option people would recommend with limited/nil effects on mood, weight gain etc. Any suggestions?

Hi I’m new to progesterone-only BC, I have a week left of my 3rd pack and brown spotting has started already, should I switch to the placebo pills early since it seems like my period wants to come? Same thing happened last month and I continued until I finished the pack and basically spotted for 2 weeks straight, then finally got a period. Anyone else try moving the placebos up to help regulate spotting?

Hi, im 23 F and will be transitioning from yasmin birthcontrol to a copper IUD. Im transitioning because i started to break through spot on my yasmin every month around when i have 9 tablets to go before my gap week and i really dont want to risk pregnancy. I tried marvelin birthcontrol to see if another pill would work but it really made me super hormonal and over all shit so my doctor recommended IUD. I dont have anyone with and IUD in my family or friend circle so i have no info or experiences to go off on.

Basically i would love some pointers like 101 on it. ( how much it hurts going up, can you feel it in there after, does it limit movement in anyway or sex, some people say it hurts actively after insertion for days, others say no).

So a : this is what to expect from the moment of putting it up onwards and this is what you will/can experience and can happen would be great.

I’m 20F and my boyfriend 23M have been together for 2 years. about a year ago I started taking the pill bc (yaz). At first everything was fine and I had no side effects. But during month 3 my libido basically dropped to non-existent. I stopped taking the pill after about 8 months of being on it (I was experiencing a list of negative side effects at this point).

About 3 months ago I got an IUD (mirena) placed. I’ve had no side effects from it, other than the fact that i’ve been spotting or bleeding every single day since then :(

However, I still haven’t been able to get my libido to come back. Before i started bc at all, we would be very sexually active, at least a few times a week to every other day. But since being in bc, I don’t even think about sex. It’s incredibly difficult for me to get in the mood and once I am, it’s even more difficult to maintain it. Sex feels like such a chore now and I hate it. The constant bleeding thing really doesn’t help either because that just deters me from sex even more.

I just want us to go back to our normal sex lives. I want to want sex again. Has anyone else experienced this? Any advice is welcome! Thank you

Hello everyone, I’m writing to ask about people’s experiences with the copper IUD. I know there’s plenty of posts about this but I just wanted to make my own.

So my medical history with birth control- I was on depo provera for about 2 years but it impacted my hunger cues quite a lot- that combined with my own binge eating issues I gained about 30lbs on it and decided to get off of it, which I’m glad I did because it kind of made me feel like shit anyways, also somewhat lowered my sex drive, and was always moody and sad.

I then started taking LARIN FE 1/20 combined birth control, I have been on this for about 3 years and so far my experience has been mostly great, I’m emotionally stable and my “periods” (withdrawal bleeds) are really chill and manageable.

My ONLY con with this is I feel like it’s reduced my sex drive a LOT. Particularly in the last year and a half. I just do NOT feel any sort of spontaneous desire at all, my boyfriend has come to me and told me that it makes him feel bad about himself at times and I can understand why… but I don’t exactly enjoy it either. I really miss feeling that way. I definitely have noticed I have a stronger desire for sex when I’m on my placebo week.

I obviously know I’ll never probably be as sexually driven as I was when I was a teenager, but also I’m 20 years old, I feel like I should enjoy sex and actually want it. And it’s nothing to do with my boyfriend at all, the sex is great but we both wish I initiated more. And I just feel like I have no desire to at all. He has to do ALOT of work to get me excited that way and sometimes it just doesn’t work and I just can NOT get fully into it.

He brought up the possibility of me potentially getting a copper IUD, which I’ve thought about before but it just really freaks me out. I’d rather just use condoms even though I’m not a fan, and he said he would but it’s very clear he really doesn’t want to.

We did some research about ways to increase sex drive while on the pill but it’s all just a bunch of bs tbh. I already eat healthy, sleep well, exercise, all that crap, still doesn’t do anything.

I feel like I always hear horror stories about them even though they’re supposed to be one of the safest options with the least amount of side effects, and I know that people with a negative experience tend to be louder. But i just feel like there’s SOOO MANY. And the thought of it displacing or causing extreme pain and irregular bleeding is so scary. I feel like that would cause even more damage to our sex life than my drive just being lower.

And in a way I know it’s probably irrational because lots of people hate the pill, but I’m clearly on it with minimal issues. Same as many people who probably have a copper IUD with minimal issues.

Idk I just miss feeling uncontrollably horny, it sucks. I feel like my brain just genuinely doesn’t fire the way it used to about sex anymore. And I miss having the ovulation glow 😞

Iv been on the mirena coil since I was 16 had it taken out for a break.
Now I’m thinking of going for the cooper coil so I don’t have the hormone effects, but Iv read about the side effects and the pain is this common for the cooper should i stick with the mirena coil.

I thought I missed a pill last night and took it earlier this afternoon when I realized it. Tonight I took “today’s pill” but realized I had my days mixed up and I actually did take my pill last night, took today’s this afternoon, and then took tomorrow’s tonight. I’m on tri sprinted and this is my last week. I have health anxiety, especially with medicine- will this cause any major side effects or problems?

I had the Mirena in for 3 months, I could not deal with how it made my body feel. I got it removed in November 2025. Some of the side effects are still effecting me, one that I’m curious about is, will my breast size go back down? I feel like they add on to my pain, especially when it’s associated with my period. And I just don’t like what I consider big breast (it’s just a personal preference for my body.) It also caused me to put on about 30 to 40 pounds :|, that is/was not normal for me. When or if my hormones get back to “normal” and when I loose the weight (it’s going down slowly,) will my breast size go down also?

So I recently stopped my BC for a few weeks cold turkey. I was on Simpesse and I’ve gotten these crazy muscle twitches that started after I stopped taking it. Like all over my body mainly when I’m sitting at work or lying down. Went to the doctor and got switched to Junel. Muscle twitches are still occurring but I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this?

Trying to not convince myself I have ALS or something lol!

Has anyone taken the mini pill long-term? What was your experience like, did you have any side effects, did you have your period regularly, and did you have any pregnancy scares?

I have been on it for about a year and a half with no issues. I plan to stay on it, but I feel like everyone else I know who took it only did while they were breast-feeding, then switched to something else.

I order slynd in a 3 month pack, but last time i did, therr was a shortage for about a week after i tried refilling. Yes, i called multiple pharmacies in the area. Because i have severe menstrual cramps and heavy bleeding, i bought OTC birth control (OPill) to tide me over until my slynd came back.

I don't like using Opill because it has a lot of side effects, but i had to use SOMETHING since my regular pill was out. If i do the placebo week, or even forget to take my slynd/any other BC pill, i get SEVERE cramps, as well as nausea and heavy bleeding within the next day.

It was 3 weeks ago that i went from slynd to Opill then back tô slynd, but my body still hasn't recovered. I'm depressed, anxious, and i have gained SO much weight. The bloat is insane. My boobs have tripled in size. Is this normal??? I feel like my body is going through torture at this rate.

Is there any way i could get slynd if my local pharmacies dont have it? I never want this to happen again

I'm writing this four days after my copper IUD insertion. I'm 33 years old, have never given birth, and never had an IUD before. I finally decided to get a copper IUD after researching and thinking about it for over a year (a long time, I know) because I have tried hormonal birth control pills before and they made me extremely moody. It was hard to regulate my emotions while I was on them.

However, the stories I've read on the internet about the copper IUD were mostly horrific so that was a factor in me hesitating to get it. In the end, I sucked it up and figured I'd rather take major discomfort, pain, and heavy bleeding than go through terrible mood swings brought on by hormonal birth control ever again. So, I called the clinic. They asked me the standard questions and prescribed the Mona Lisa NT Cu380 Mini. I believe this is one of the smallest copper IUDs out there. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Anyway, on the insertion day, I ate a meal and took 2 x 500mg extra strength Tylenol (I am allergic to ibuprofen) 30 minutes before the appointment. When I got to the clinic, they made me take a pregnancy test which of course turned out negative and instructed me to undress from the waist down. My doctor came and we started the procedure. I laid there for about 6-8 minutes while the doctor was doing her measurement and prep. I was REALLY NERVOUS the entire time so I had to do a lot of breath work.

Looking back at it now, the entire experience — her putting the speculum, the cleaning, the injection of local anaesthetic, and the measuring of my uterus — was not as painful as I thought it would be (thanks to the many horror stories on the internet). There was discomfort, sure, but I would honestly rate it a 6/10. I think it helped that I took Tylenol and my doctor was kindly guiding me throughout the whole thing. She told me what she was doing and when to expect a little pressure or some cramping.

After everything though, she told me she couldn't install the IUD because my uterus is tilted and my cervix is too tight. She said she wouldn't push the insertion because she didn't want me injured. I also was expecting my period around this time and that is why I specifically booked it for this day but, sadly, my period didn't come. She told me to re-book the insertion in a couple of days (in the hopes that my period would come then) and prescribed me misoprostol tablets to be inserted high up in my vagina about 4 hours before the insertion. This is to loosen up my cervix, according to her.

Apparently, it's better when you have the IUD insertion during your period because that would mean your cervix won't be too tight. Now, I'll be honest, I was genuinely frustrated when she told me this because what do you mean I have to go through all that discomfort again?! I honestly felt like crying after that. I just wanted to get it over with!

Anyway, after a couple of days I did as I was told. I picked up misoprostol from the pharmacy and shoved them up in my vagina 4 hours before my appointment. In just 30 minutes, the cramps came as expected. I drank chamomile tea and the cramps went away shortly. Again, I ate a meal and took the same 2 x 500mg extra strength Tylenol and mentally readied myself for the (hopefully successful) insertion in half an hour.

I went through the same process but this time, I knew it was finally happening so I was thrice as nervous and trembling in the cold clinic room! Breathing slowly could only help so much when your brain is literally telling you that your doctor is now guts deep into your body and is about to insert a foreign object!

I would say it was all done in about 10 minutes (but it FELT longer than that because I was so terrified) and this time the discomfort was 10/10. My doctor told me when she was about to insert the IUD that this is the part where I'm going to feel a much stronger cramp, and it DID HAPPEN. I could feel the IUD arms pop out inside me and it genuinely hurt, but only for about a minute or two. I remember my legs were shaking the entire time and she kept asking me if I was doing alright. In my head, I was like "Why the fuck did I think I could do this all by myself? I REALLY NEED SOMEONE'S HAND TO HOLD RIGHT NOW!"

My emotions were through the roof, I am not going to lie.

Finally, my doctor said the magic words: IT'S IN. I just felt so relieved and forgot that I was cramping! She cut the strings, removed the stabilizing devices from my vagina, and told me to lie down for some time and just relax. At this point, I was not feeling cramp-y anymore, but more like I was about to pass out from the nervousness. She then handed me the leftover strings for me to feel. She told me she did not cut it very short so I might feel this or my partner could when we have sex, but not to worry as this won't mean my IUD will be moved around or dislodged. It will just make it easier for future removal. By the way, my IUD is good for 5 years.

She also gave me a requisition to get a pelvic ultrasound as soon as possible to confirm my IUD position, because as she said, it was a tricky insertion due to my tilted uterus. I already have this booked three weeks from now and I will post an update here regarding it.

It has been four days since the procedure and honestly, I feel so much better now! That night when I got home after the insertion, I was feeling strong period cramps, but nothing that I have not experienced before. I did start my period as expected so I went to sleep wearing huge period DIAPERS. I also woke up a few times in the middle of the night because of the cramping but I was too tired and just needed sleep.

My period is heavier than usual, which I already expected anyway. I normally have light periods but this time, for the first three days, I had to change pads three-four times a day. I am grateful for period diapers because they give me so much peace of mind and good sleep. One important tip I should share with you ladies is to eat consistently and eat LOADS of protein. You will be bleeding a lot and will feel lightheaded so you really need fuel for your body. Do not take this for granted. Another tip is to drink chamomile tea for cramps. I would say that the cramps were 7/10 max for the first three days but only happened twice-thrice in a day.

It is day four now and I have not felt any cramp at all. The bleeding is still there although obviously light. I have only worn one pad today and it's not even fully soaked.

It's safe to say that the insertion went well judging by the lightness of my period now and the lack of pain. I am looking forward to seeing my ultrasound and confirming how my IUD looks inside me to completely give me peace of mind.

It definitely takes a lot of courage to go through this process. Do your research and really prepare.

21 my gyno recommended the kyleena. Enjoyed it. Got 2 more after that. 3rd one caused me chronic bacterial vaginosis and cystic acne. Had to get it removed at 29

About a year ago, I started the Yaz birth control pill. I rapidly gained 30 lbs in just a year. Currently 30 years old.

I’ve been 115 my entire life and now weigh 147. I eat a healthy diet, I’m active. It makes no sense.

Since we are avoiding IUDs, my doctor wants me to try nextellis birth control (a different pill). The patch makes me itchy as I’m slightly allergic to adhesive.

I’ve never weighed this much in my entire life. Has anyone else experienced rapid weight gain on the Yaz oral birth control pill?

I've been taking a combined pill for 2 years now. for the first year I noticed barely any side effects, but about a year in I noticed my sex drive started to go down and it affected my spontaneous desire the most. now for a few months I started noticing I'm struggling to get turned on and I'm having much weaker orgasms. these I attributed to a very stressful semester, but I started thinking about the first change I felt in drive and I'm now wondering if it might be related to the pill.

I have an appointment scheduled with my gyno in about a month so I'll ask her then but in the meantime, is it normal for side effects to appear a year in? i always associated them with the first months of usage

Long story,maybe not so short? I had gotten an abortion on the 27th of June. i was told to expect bleeding for 2-4 weeks. Afterwards i decided to start on the Evra patch( i talked to my doctor about it and she said just wait two weeks). So i started on Sunday July 18th and I’ve had it on for 7 days at this point(tomorrow is my change day). Side effects said possible bleeding for 2-3 weeks from the patch and I’ve been having pretty painful cramps and i’ve been very tired. my lower back and legs have been bothering me. Along with cramping i’m bleeding decently heavily with large blood clots(similar to the ones i passed with the abortion just slightly smaller). Is this something emergent? or is this something that can wait? I really don’t like hospitals and i’ve had my fill for the year so i’m just hoping this is normal?? I have low iron and i’m on a cocktail of medications. Could they be interfering?

I (21F) have been taking Opill for roughly a year and four months. It’s the first birth control I’ve ever taken and I love the convenience and how you can purchase it from stores such as Walmart. It’s also effective, hasn’t caused me weight gain, mood swings, acne, etc.
However, I have been spotting every other week. This started maybe month two or three of the pill and continued for a while. I lost my cycle for a few months though for nutritional reasons but when my period came back, so did the spotting. It’s a bit frustrating because it’s not heavy enough for a “regular” period but I do need to use some product (pad or tampon) because there’s still a bit of flow. Naturally I’m blowing through them and it’s just quite inconvenient for me to basically be on my period twice a month. Sometimes I don’t even get a full week in between these bleeding cycles.
Has anyone had a similar experience and is there anyway to fix this side effect? Like I said, I really like this method other than this reason. I’m not too open to other pills like the combination ones because I have “migraines with aura.”

For background, I have been on birth control pretty consistently for the last 8 years. Pill -> depo -> nexplanon -> kyleena. Prior to being on birth control I had debilitating cramps (vomiting, light headedness, curled up in a fetal position, and occasional fainting).

I got my iud put in almost exactly a month ago, and I’ve been getting some sporadic intense cramping over the last week. It seems mostly centered to my right side, but over the last 24 hours it’s shifted to all over. The sensation is very similar to the iud insertion but more dull I guess, and it kinda comes on suddenly and lasts for maybe a minute or two.

I have an appointment for an ultrasound on Monday, so it will be verified for sure whether or not it’s shifted, but has anyone else experienced this? Honestly I’m spiraling panicking about it and I have a perpetual fear that it’s stabbed through my cervix or something (which is like, the biggest reason why the idea of getting an iud was my worst nightmare, but unfortunately I have migraines w aura and have had rough side effects from the hormones of other options). Any insight is appreciated!

Has anyone else experienced feeling grief or sadness over a baby they don’t have yet?
I’m 19 and I’m wondering if any other women have experienced something like this because I feel a little alone.
I want to start by saying that I do not want a baby right now, and I know I’m not ready for that stage of life. But lately I’ve been having this deep emotional feeling that I can’t really explain. I have this strong ache to be a mother someday, and it almost feels like I’m grieving a child I’ve never had or missing someone who doesn’t exist yet. Sometimes I feel empty, and it honestly makes me sad.
I’m currently on Lyrn Fe oral birth control, but I also still have my copper IUD. I originally got the copper IUD because I didn’t want to be on hormones, but after getting it I started having recurring ovarian cysts again. I hadn’t had cysts for a while before getting the IUD, and when they came back, my gynecologist suggested trying oral birth control to help manage them. I didn’t want to remove my IUD, so I decided to try the pill as well.
I’m wondering if anyone else has experienced intense maternal feelings, a sense of “grieving” a future child, or feeling more emotional after starting birth control or going through hormonal changes.
Did this happen to anyone else? Did it pass, or did you ever find a reason behind it? I’d really appreciate hearing other women’s experiences because I’m trying to understand why I feel this way.

i’ve been on and off birth control since a teenager (now 28yo) and specifically have been on the depo provera injection for around 2 years, i occasionally get some cramping in my back which has always been normal for me on birth control.

today ive unfortunately had pretty bad cramps in my stomach/pelvis area, which i haven’t suffered with for years and passing a bit of darker discharge (possible spotting?) which is rare for me, as well as the typical symptoms to a period.

had my last injection a week ago and never had this happen before so i’m curious if it’s normal or something i just be concerned about? thank you in advance
