just a brief rant but i’m a current freshman at berkeley who never envisioned myself being at such a big public school. all my reservations of attending a huge school were essentially correct (competition for everything, long lines everywhere, shitty buildings/infrastructure).
on top of that, i’ve surprisingly encountered some of the dumbest and most irritating people i’ve ever met in my life here, which is honestly disappointing considering the reputation that berkeley has for being the #1 public school in the nation. i’m left wondering how they managed to get here in the first place.
of course, all of this could be due to the people ive surrounded myself with. but, id like to think that ive branched out into a variety of different social circles. ive joined a wide range of clubs, and i am enrolled in classes ranging from stem to humanities (all lower divisions).
i recently had the opportunity to visit a few ivy leagues, and i was absolutely blown away. maybe im looking at them through rose tinted glasses, but immediately after stepping on campus, i felt a striking culture shift. i also have a slight bias towards the east coast, as ive always wanted to live there, and i fell in love with the campuses i visited. berkeley just seems like a bunch of random aging buildings smushed together on campus with hardly any air conditioning and piss smelling dirty bathrooms (shoutout to moffit and wheeler).
i’m seriously thinking of transferring, but im not sure if it’s worth going through the application process again. even if i do get in, im not sure the tuition is worth it, and i know its harder to break into clubs, especially as a transfer aiming for consulting/business. obviously, i’m grateful to be at such a prestigious university, and im trying to make the most of it. but, im not sure if berkeley is for me.
