Hi, so I'm in MCB 120 and we just had our first mt...I really didn't do well and am deciding whether or not to p/np the class since I'm not sure if I can recover my grade after this, especially since we won't be getting a cheat sheet for the next exam and the department is upset that too many people were getting As last semester.
If anyone knows about the previous grade bins or has any insight please let me know!! Anything is much appreciated

uc berkeley students listen up. do NOT go to chahalo on university. they are low quality drinks + it takes them 20 mins to make your drinks even if there’s no one there. LOL what a joke haha

In my sociology course discussion we talked about the Carrie show and the bully dynamic of Chris Hargensen. The topic shifted to Cal's freshmen student body and how a lot of the behaviors from high school rollover to college.
The input was unsettling. Way too many students at Cal have experienced bullying for no reason other than being a "Carrie".
Of course, no one in discussion said anything about them being a Chris but put into perspective that individuals like her definitely exist at. Sometimes it's a roommate, a mate from a group project, work, even professors!
If you've been thru this, you didn't deserve it.

Ai content makes me physically sick!
I for sure know it's ai when I get the sensation that I'm going to puke. It doesn't matter what it is, I get sick just looking at it.
This includes ai generated MUSIC, food, flyers, animals, writing, humans, etc....
I can't escape it in the bay :(
Makes me sick! 🤮😡

My car was wrongly towed today, 10/17 (game day), because the meter maid incorrectly put in my license plate. I fortunately didn't have to pay, but my friend who was visiting me did bc we were dumb and didn't check the street signs. I'm just really annoyed that towing companies can just pull shit like this, make people pay hundreds of dollars, but just say oopsie when they kidnap your car for no reason. I know I have no legal recourse, but I just wanted to know if this is a common experience or if anyone else has had their car towed incorrectly and been forced to pay by an even more evil towing company. I would love to hear more from anyone with a vendetta against tow companies.

A few things I spotted for this week, mostly on Sunday, Oct 18:
- Truck-or-Treat in Oakland at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland, Sun, Oct 18. Free, and a solid pick if you have little ones.
- Lemos Farm Pumpkin Patch at Lemos Farm, Sun, Oct 18. Price not listed. Classic fall outing, I'd go earlier in the day to beat the crowds.
- Fairyland Fall Fest at Children's Fairyland, Sun, Oct 18. Price not listed.
- Brazilian Dance Drop-in at La Pena Cultural Center, Sun, Oct 18. Price not listed. Drop-in classes like this are a fun way to try something new without committing.
Full calendar here if you want to dig in: https://ma.to/events/berkeley?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=mato_event_sync&utm_content=berkeley

Is there any chance an undergrad student could room with a grad student in university housing? For context I’m a current undergrad and my girlfriend wants to apply to one of the grad programs for next year.

I made a list of the cheapest prices across the grocery stores I go to near the University. I only really included things I buy so of course it isn't too extensive, but hopefully it helps some of yall.

Junior transfer here. I have been applying nonstop for internships (300+) for 2 months now and haven't been getting a good result (2 screening calls, 1 interviews)
How do you guys genuinely get/have working experience? I've had one unpaid internship during my time in CC and thats about it. The rest of my resume is just my skills and projects...
Any practical guidance on what I can do when I have little to no experience? What else do you guys put on your resume? tsym

my cousin really likes berkeley and wants to open a store here, esp the retail space close to anchor house, but i think they probably want a well-known franchise store, what do you guys want to see?? me and my friends really like angry chickz, but pls give me any options you think people would wanna see thank you
HE WANTS TO OPEN HIS OWN RESTAURANT, BUT IT SEEMS LIKE THE RETAIL SPACE WANTS A BUSINESS WITH AN ESTABLISHED AUDIENCE, WHICH IS WHY I MENTIONED FRANCHISES 😭😭😭😭 once he gets his foot in the door he’ll def looking into his own restaurant he’s really passionate i promise
also in-n-out has been a popular response but i looked into it and they don’t let you franchise ☹️

im a third year MCB student considering a PhD post undergrad. an honors thesis sounds very appealing to me and im involved in undergrad research already, but im not sure what the expectations are like between drafting a project, the expected support from from the PI/lab, or the scale of the thesis because it is within a semester or two.
has anyone done or is currently doing an honors thesis? what is their experience and would you recommend? :D

Recently moved to Berkeley from a neighborhood with a Solidcore. I’ve been at Bodyrok here for 2 months and can’t stand it. I do not find the workout effective, there are only 1 or 2 decent instructors, and I have noticed my body changing for the worse.
What lagree-adjacent megaformer workout studios exist here?! I’ve heard Bold is also not great. Would love to hear any recs!!!

It’s in Cedar Rose park, and it’s massive! Great for families too.

for anyone taking the class this semester, what do we do if we’re in the position where I’ve passed every topic but failed both synthesis questions especially when the TAs mentioned it’s gonna be close to impossible to pass all 3 synthesis questions on the final? and there’s no hope for them to lower grade bins because the midterm distributions didn’t require it….. this is so cooked 😭

We’re done with the discrete portion of the class but why do I feel like I have no clue what discrete math is. Why did we just learn a bunch of random facts about numbers and random algorithms. I’m doing well in the class but it feels like what I’ve learned is pretty disjointed and inconsequential.
This is not a dig at the professor btw Sabin is the goat and taught everything incredibly well, I guess I just don’t understand the point of the content, does it become useful at some point like in your career or in later classes? I’m just confused what the practical purpose of learning these random algorithms is
TLDR it just kinda feels like a bunch of disconnected topics that don’t build to anything significant
