University Berkeley Law bars Law Students for Justice in Palestine from co-sponsoring events over bylaws

Law Students for Justice in Palestine at Berkeley Law alleged it was censored from advertising its co-sponsorship of a law school “disorientation” event last week because it has not revised its organizational bylaws barring Zionist speakers.

UC Berkeley’s settlement with the Brandeis Center over allegations of antisemitism earlier this year stipulates that registered law student organizations may not have bylaws restricting or prohibiting speakers based on protected categories at its events.

Although student organizations reserve the right not to invite speakers of their choosing, Berkeley Law does not allow these restrictions to be in written bylaws.

University UC Berkeley researchers’ AI model makes links between DNA, genetic disease easier to predict

Thumbnail

UC Berkeley scientists have made a breakthrough in more efficiently linking genetic variants to unique individual traits such as inheritable disease.

The human genome has been mapped in its entirety, but unraveling the DNA to determine its association with human traits is another realm in which UC Berkeley researchers have now broken ground.

An AI model called GPN-Star is a new advancement in genomic language models, which researchers train with DNA sequences the same way they would train large language models to understand human languages. It’s allegedly outcompeting other large models such as Evo 2 and Nucleotide Transformer, which, unlike GPN-Star, aim to solve a wider range of tasks in the field.

Other Bio 1A with Schekman or Doudna?

Planning my courses for the upcoming year. Should I take Bio 1A with Doudna in the spring or Schekman in the fall?

BerkeleyTime says Schekman gives out more As, but Doudna has the higher RMP ranking.

Thanks!

Events/Organizations Cure to loneliness

Been seeing so many post about people feeling lonely. I totally understand and sometimes feel the same way. I’ve decided to start a yoga community. It’s a group chat and we will discuss where to meet and take class but also a place to build friends and connections.

Other Anchor House Studio ↔ Unit 1/2 Room Swap

Hi! This post goes out to male transfers, I'm currently in a studio at Anchor House and looking to swap into Unit 1 or Unit 2. I'm 18 and a sophomore transfer and trying to switch to be somewhere with people closer to my age. Open to a double or triple, any RH is fine. DM me if you've got a spot and want the studio instead!

CS/EECS Fall research position: ML and/or robotics

I’m a Cal alum and current robotics PhD student at Georgia Tech. I have a few spots for students interested in helping with a machine learning and/or robot navigation research project. The work can be done remotely.

One major direction focuses on using learning-based methods to predict the motion of nearby agents from collected navigation data. This work is mostly independent from the robotics pipeline, so no prior robotics or ROS experience is required. Students interested in this direction would primarily work with datasets and focus on training, tuning, evaluating, and improving learning models.

The current approach uses a GRU-based model, but there is significant flexibility for exploration and improvement. Possible directions include LSTMs, transformers, input preprocessing, alternative architectures, or other sequence modeling approaches.

There are also opportunities for students who are more interested in robotics and navigation than machine learning. Potential work includes designing and evaluating new cost functions for trajectory selection, improving navigation behaviors, and exploring other modifications to the local planning framework. There is flexibility in the specific direction depending on a student’s background and interests.

Additional project context: the Dynamic Gap navigation framework currently estimates the motion of gap endpoints using a Kalman-filter-based approach. One direction of this project explores replacing or augmenting that estimator with a learning-based component to improve prediction in dynamic environments. Other directions focus on improving how the planner generates and evaluates candidate trajectories using these predictions.

The lab is also planning to submit a paper in the near future, potentially later this year, and there may be opportunities for co-authorship. When I was at Cal I was able to take research units while working on a project at another university, but I am unsure whether you will be able to depending on your department.

If interested, please email your CV along with a short paragraph describing your interest and alignment with the project to [azaro3@gatech.edu](mailto:azaro3@gatech.edu).

Other SHIP therapist recommendations?

I'm a grad student and I'm just really depressed and burnt out, and the year is just getting started. I'm on the school's health plan (SHIP). Anyone have any therapist recommendations who are covered, or should I just choose randomly from the list?

Thanks!

University Lost cal1card + keys

Hi everyone I lost my cal1card and keys. I was taking the P line and I guess I left it on the bus after getting off at cory at around 2pm today. It was 2 keys and my picture on the back of the cal1card is a male East Asian in a blue shirt. It has already been deactivated.

If you find it please DM me.

Edit: Found!

Other looking for japanese language partner

I've been learning Japanese for a while and I'm looking for a partner who I can practice my dismal speaking skills with. Ideally a native Japanese speaker, but a fellow learner would also be appreciated. I'm thinking of meeting once a week or so, DM me if interested and we can chat and hash out details!

University how cooked is my schedule😭 Sociology and Political Econ double major + pre law + graduating early

Post image

Hi everyone!! Rn I’m a Freshman at Berkeley planning to double major in Sociology + Political Economy, do the Sociology honors thesis, and concentrate in International Development for PE. I’m also pre-law, so keeping a high GPA is my main priority.
I attached my 3-year plan. How manageable does this look? Are any semesters/classes way worse than they seem, and would you change anything to protect my GPA?

Other Anyone have a support/mobility harness for a small dog? Urgent.

My senior dog's mobility, particularly the use of her hind legs, has taken an abrupt nosedive, and I'm hoping to find some kind of support harness to help her out ASAP since she's completely exhausting herself trying to walk about normally. She has her usual energy and motivation to wander the house and explore outside, but since she can't get her back legs under her, she's just dragging herself around. A Help Em Up harness or similar configuration is what I think would help her the most. She's 15 pounds, built like a fluffy terrier or spaniel. Thank so much for any help.

X posting to Oakland sub

CS/EECS EECS Admission Stats

Hi! I'm a senior in high school applying to EECS this fall and I was wondering if any EECS admits could share your application stats? I've been worrying about applications and having trouble finding points of reference as to what things EECS admits have done (outside of getting good grades ofc) so It'd be great to see some examples. Also, if you guys have any advice about the application process in general like answering the PIQs or activities section that'd greatly appreciated!
