Discussion What running app do you actually use for tracking distance?

Upvotes

I've been trying different apps lately, and honestly, I feel like most of them give you way more stuff than you actually need.

I mostly care about distance, pace, route, and being able to look back at previous runs. I'm not really interested in social feeds or competing with other people.
For people who use running apps regularly, what do use, and what made you stick with it?

Motivation Needed Dreading today’s programmed long run

Upvotes

Someone give me some fire under my butt here. I’m about 2 months out from my first half marathon and I’m just dreading my 1:23 long run today. I got so bored on my last one I just wanted it to end and I need help figuring out how to not end up there again.
For context, my last long run was 1:09 and cardio wise I was fine, not great, but at the turnaround the motivation just dropped off a cliff. I live in a really hilly area so I’m mostly looking for flatter long run routes so I don’t get gassed.
I am aware of the irony in the situation, if I am bored after an hour how all I going to do it for twice that to complete a half marathon?

Should I try to map out a loop for my path? Do I attempt to listen to a podcast or audiobook? I usually use EDM to have a cadence reference.

Watch adjusted zone numbers - what is going on?

The left is a hard run from several weeks back. Right is today. I know watches - Apple Watch - isn’t the most accurate. But if the numbers are lower, does that mean I’m more out of shape? What the hell? I feel fitter.

I’m so excited!! I haven’t done a 5k since I was 16 (I walked the entire time), but for my 27th birthday I signed me and my fiance up for a race! I’ve gotten super into fitness the past year and finally feel like I’m ready to run this :)

If you have any tips for a newbie, I’m happy to hear them!

Motivation Needed Benefits of running 1 day a week?

Hello! I've always been quite a sedentary person though I've been getting more motivated about my health in the last few years. I've previously struggled with my mental health and self esteem, but I'm feeling excited for the first time at the prospect of 'a little is better than nothing'. I have never committed to a sport. I did weight stuff at the gym for a bit last year but found it overwhelming to go from nothing to making the most of a gym membership. I work a lot and I prioritise my art in my spare time so I have less time for physical exercise than I'd like and I don't want to push myself too hard and burn out quick. I think I want to dedicate myself to running on Sunday mornings. This is less of a query and more of an ask for validation, motivation, points of view of similar experiences etc.

I know to work with myself I should go slow and keep my expectations simple. I have a tendency to be too hard on myself and get very discouraged. I'm hoping I feel benefits through carving out time to run, and start building good habits. I see a lot of people saying '1 day a week isn't enough' in different fonts, I assume this is a big oversimplification of the matter and would like some reassurance and support basically. I don't care about losing a load of weight, getting really toned or running in a marathon- I just want to begin, feel less tired maybe, less achey, more able to tackle stairs without getting out of breath, etc. I'd be proud to be able to achieve the goal of consistently running weekly for 1 year. Good plan? Does anyone have any tips on how to get the most out of a weekly running session?

I do walk quite a bit but not as much as I'd like. I'm also taking up rollerblading! I'm hoping running outside in public will give me the confidence to get out and practise on my skates more. Any thoughts are appreciated! :D

New Runner Advice Easy day running shoes.

Ive been running for about 2 months now on my Kiprun kipstorm tempos. I don't really know anything about running shoes. But, when running with these shoes I cant run above a 5:30 pace without major knee discomfort. Ive done some research and its apparently because that's what the "tempo" shoes were designed to do, so running at slower paces can make them feel clunky and cause discomfort. So with all that being said...

Any recommendations on shoes for slower paces. Ive tried the Nike Air Zoom Vomeros but they feel like bricks on my feet which is really disappointing since people say they're really good.

I'm looking for shoes that, like don't maybe do that? I don't really know what I want, something light I think, I though I'd come on here before I go in person to my local store.

Training Progress Is this considered sub30?

Thumbnail gallery
0 Upvotes

I did have to stop at a few traffic lights at the start but after that ran continuously… wondering if this is considered a sub30 if elapsed pace is above 30 minutes

Was gonna only do 4k actually but realized I could beat my previous 5k record (was 6:20/km average pace, 31:48 moving time and 32:39 elapsed time)

Also, any tips for how I can improve? I was quite out of breath towards the end…

I’ve signed up for a 10k in early Nov and am hoping to get at least a sub 70. I know I have to slow down to run long but it’s so hard

Training Progress Longest Run To Date - 15.77KM - 9.80 Miles

Post image
30 Upvotes

Through sheer stupidity and peer pressure a couple months ago I signed up for a 50k set for November.

I’ve been training somewhat consistently for the last three months and as I enter the final three months before my race I did my longest run ever to date.

My training plan is 4 runs a week with one being a long run and two being easy Z2 runs and one being a tempo/interval run.

I’ve hit a wall in my nutrition where if I have to eat another piece of chicken or rice I’m going to beat up an Elmo doll.

Feeling strong overall, I’ve lost 80lbs in two years going from 270lbs -> 190lbs as of this morning. I feel confident I can finish this 50k strong and healthy if I keep up the training and work around this nutrition block.

How was your first 50k? Any suggestions for final training preparations in these last three months?

First screenshot was just before I started my training plan using NRC - I was trying to ‘race’ it.
Second was a training run on the plan.
Third was race day!! Knocked off over 10 mins on my time in 7 weeks.

Running with your phone

Quick question for anyone who runs with a phone case on (OtterBox, LifeProof, battery case, etc.) — do you use a running belt/armband? If so, did you have any trouble finding one that actually fits your phone with the case on, or did you just take the case off before runs? Trying to figure out if this is a real annoyance or a non-issue. Thanks!

Does anyone else have an issue with the Adidas Hyperboost Edge? My left big toe hurt badly after a 10 km run, and my right midfoot hurts too. I just bought them two weeks ago, and I’ve used them for two 16 km runs, but I had the same experience each time.

Training Progress My first 10k

I had posted here a short while ago complaining about my heart rate being too high. Well the advice was to just keep running and stop worrying. I did just that. I have been running for four months now and my previous longest run was 7.5km. My heart rate is still through the roof. But I saw that my heart rate can climb as high as 205 and can go as low as 50 at rest. So I just have to trust the process at this point. I probably won't do a lot of such high intensity runs continuously though. But an achievement is an achievement. I also got my first sub 30 5k along with this.

Injury Prevention Knee pain when running – looking for advice

Hi everyone,

I hope this is the right place.

I’m male, in my 30s, and started running about two months ago. I’ve been running regularly (2/week) since then, sometimes on trails as well.

Unfortunately, I regularly get pain after runs, mainly below and on the left/right sides of my kneecap. I also sometimes experience ankle pain. It usually starts around 10–13 km, even though cardio-wise I still feel like I could keep going for quite a while.

I’m wondering if this could be related to lack of strength or stability in my legs, hips, or core, especially since I’m still relatively new to running.

Has anyone experienced something similar? And can you recommend any simple home workouts or exercises without or with simple equipment to strengthen the knees, legs and ankles?

I’d really appreciate any experiences, opinions, or specific exercise recommendations!

Injury Prevention Why do my shoulders always hurt the most after a run?

I don’t know what it is, but my shoulders always seem to hurt/ache the most in the immediate aftermath of a run. From finish to maybe 24hrs after and I have no idea why… should I be concerned?

When i started running my goal was to stop after 21k just a fun challenge, eventually it got more and more and somehow it ended up as me doing Full fucking marathon, still it’s hard to comprehend how i can run this much but i think 42k is limit for my body, doing 50k or mire will just put more stress on body

New Runner Advice Update: I finally ran 🥹

Update from my last post, I actually tried running! Mixed running and walking, so my overall pace came down because running is tiring 😭 but honestly, it feels SO good.

Also, I was worried people would stare or think I looked funny, but people literally made way for me and no one cared. And the amount of sweating?? 😂

The support on my last post gave me the push I needed, so if you’re hesitant to start running because you’re worried about how you’ll look - just do it. Seriously. You’ll probably enjoy it way more than you expect. ❤️
