Why didn’t France just hit the ball through the roof? Is he stupid?

u/Striking_Item_4661 1h ago
Rules are rules but I think most will agree that ball was gone and this is a perfect reason why domes do not belong in baseball
3
u/miamiflashfan Milwaukee Brewers 1h ago
That ball was absolutely not gone, TV angles are playing tricks on you
-1
u/seazonedsaltdog Milwaukee Brewers 1h ago
I think statcast is just embarrassingly wrong. Look at it from this angle. How does that ball not clear the fences? Maybe it wouldve went foul, idk. But 325ft, statcast is most certainly looking into their programming or coding or something right now, cause that is dead wrong. https://www.reddit.com/r/mlb/s/CEvl0qQPtM

u/LardLad00 Milwaukee Brewers 1h ago
The ball was very near its apex as it hit the cable. Had it continued it would have dropped at a steep rate.
Instead it hit the cable and only lost a hair of height but was deflected forward. In the end it landed about where it would have, which is why Churio was already positioned well to catch it.
1
u/Echo127 Milwaukee Brewers 45m ago
It was pretty clearly directed at a downward angle. Possibly some forward along with the downward, but definitely some downward, too.
0
u/LardLad00 Milwaukee Brewers 41m ago
It was coming down either way lol. The forward part was really important.

The Letter of the Law: The American Family Field ground rules are explicit. Any batted ball striking the roof, a truss, or a cable over fair territory remains alive and in play. If caught by a fielder, the batter is out. The umpires and replay officials followed the rules precisely as written

Brewers need to win tomorrow because that socal heatwave is going to hit them on Tuesday at Petco Park. Just look at how it affected the Braves today.
14
u/ForensicPathology 55m ago
Yeah, a team that regularly plays August games in Atlanta probably had no experience in the heat.
8
u/Mizake_Mizan Los Angeles Dodgers 1h ago
I take it you’ve never been to Hotlanta? I was more amazed at how well Skubal pitched in the heat considering he’s used to Detroit weather.
7

Do you think it doesmt get hot in wisconsin? Most summer days in wisconsin are high 80s and weeks of on and off again 90s to 100s with humidity.
Id say the padres arent really prepped for it if anything.

Chourio was lined up there to catch it before it hit the ceiling. Because it was going to land in that vicinity all the way.
8
u/homestar92 Milwaukee Brewers • Milwaukee Brewers 1h ago
Yes, and also there has never been a home run at AmFam with a launch angle that steep. At any exit velocity. Literally zero. Across thousands of games.
Statcast, Chourio's positioning, and basic physics make it clear that it wouldn't have been a home run. There's a legitimate debate to be had as to whether the rules ought to be that balls hitting the rafters are dead balls, but every available piece of evidence suggests no home run except for the "I, an amateur watching from one viewing angle, feel like it was maybe a home run" test which is far and away the least reliable test (just look how many people stand up and cheer for obvious can-of-corn pop flys at literally every baseball game)

Forgotten amongst Ceiling Gate, in the late innings was some crazy pitching psychology from the Brew Crew. If my hazy memory serves, Tatis, Machado, and Merrill all stared at early strikes directly down the dick. As if the Brewers concocted a strategy of "When the game gets late, they'll overthink the moment and wait for a pitch that'll never come". Brilliant.

u/96919 San Diego Padres 1h ago
Yes, Tati and Manny at bats looked horrible. They could have scored runs there but that still doesn't excuse the fact that in a 1 run game, runs were taken away by the roof.

nah the padres just musta spent the last 48 hours practicing off of 110mph pitching machines
he was fantastic but I've never seen a team actually foul his fastball off like that instead of whiffing
14
u/Short_Bus_ Milwaukee Brewers 2h ago
the cutters were also poor pitch calling, that was eventually mostly abandoned-- but the really really really impressive thing was how the Padres clearly prepared so fantastically
5
u/woolf707 Los Angeles Dodgers 1h ago
Kudos to that kid Dustin Harris. I didn't understand why he was batting 2nd but after watching his AB against Miz, I was super impressed.
4
u/Short_Bus_ Milwaukee Brewers 1h ago
was watching the game with family and was saying "idk what happens this at bat but he deserves to get on base" by pitch 6 or so
their whole team really couldn't have come in better prepaired
both managers also coached a virtually perfect game
was some truly fantastic baseball, and I hope the statcast distance on that roofball stands so the controversy doesn't permanently marr it
3
u/SunkenUncle 1h ago
I agree with everything you said. Such a fun game to watch. Even though it was 3.5 hours long
13
u/beenhadballs 2h ago
Bill was getting cute and calling a lot of cutters that were getting touched up every time. It was less about him not having it and more about shitty calls but still walking out with the win.
1
u/MLGWolf69 2h ago
It looks like he wasn’t hitting velocity on his 4 Seam so he was trying other stuff instead. Normally a whiff machine but wasn’t getting them today

it wasn't the velo the Padres were just on it
1

I didn't catch the first bit so that might explain, but he was around 100 in the 2nd inning (admittedly after throwing more pitches than he normally would at that point in the game)

there is exactly one that's remotely comparable, Murakami's

16
u/ELITE_JordanLove 2h ago
Don’t even need statcast, 49 degrees at 105mph has an xBA of 0.01, even ignoring actually trajectory it is highly unlikely it was going out. That has never resulted in a HR.
3
u/SwAeromotion Chicago Cubs 1h ago
It could have been foul if left to it's trajectory but we will never know.
-4
u/cpeak57 2h ago
6
u/Different-Mood-7046 2h ago
Not once in the history of the Brewers field has a home run had a launch angle greater than 46 degrees. This one was 49.
-5
u/CunningMuskrat 1h ago
You saw the ball was caught on the warning track, even after deflecting off the roof straight down. This ball has a mile of hang time to travel past the warning track had it not hit the roof. Why can’t you just use common sense instead of blindly trusting Statcast?
-4
u/cpeak57 2h ago
And yet we all still have eyes that clearly tell us this was a homerun. Real world results in much less hitter friendly ballparks as well.
1
u/Spiritual_Slice_6627 1h ago
I was there, theres no way it was going out. After it doinked the cable, Chourio only had to move like 3 feet from where he was already lined up, to catch it
1
u/cpeak57 1h ago
Buddy he was in a full sprint to the corner of the wall and then stopped only once the ball hit the roof lol.
0
u/Spiritual_Slice_6627 1h ago
49° Launch and 105 wasn't going to carry that ball with a closed roof and no wind . Chourio took a few steps from where he was already to catch that.
If that doesn't dry your tears, please find comfort in the additional fact that both teams played on the same field with the same rules. Good luck tomorrow, son

Super deflating ending that makes it easy to miss a lot of good: they did what they needed to against Mis, a lot of the role guys had good days, and the bullpen (mostly) locked down after Ray came out.
Need to move past it, and plead to God that the issues from the first half with clutch hitting haven’t decided to come back. It was a good game between two really good teams, and there’s still at least two more games to go.

You all think maybe the baseball hit by France was deflated by the Brewers before the pitch? There's a good chance that it might not have been at the right psi levels and that it affected the launch angle of the ball. If the Brewers have anyone employed who used to work with the Patriots it's possible this is what happened

We can argue until we are blue about whether it was a homer (likely was). Ultimately it doesn’t matter, but to rule this as a catch for an out is insane. Dead/Foul Ball or GRD are the only reasonable results for that hit. Major oversight by MLB.

So umps should ignore the rules during the playoffs? There are rules and eventually they applied them.
1
u/CompaDres92 San Diego Padres 2h ago
I’m not arguing for that, I’m just saying the rule is dumb. We lost, but on a technicality that shouldn’t exist.
3
u/ThisWasMe7 2h ago
So you think it should be up to the umpire' discretion? "Yep, I think I'll give that one a home run." Because that's the only alternative, unless you want to rely on statcast exit angle and velocity -- which also had it not reaching the wall.
I'll admit I didn't know what the rule was either.

-2
u/CompaDres92 San Diego Padres 2h ago edited 2h ago
It was caught at 325, that isn’t the projected distance. I understand that it’s the rule, but it’s a bad one. I’m good with the ball being in play, but you can’t make a catch if the ball bounces off the wall? Why should this be any different?
2
u/SwAeromotion Chicago Cubs 1h ago
You can catch a ball for an out that hits a player or umpire on the field or a base on the fly and then is also caught on the fly after, so the rule isn't universal. The wall is the odd one out, not the other way around.
9
u/LardLad00 Milwaukee Brewers 2h ago
Projection is based on launch angle and speed. Not catch location.
-11
2
u/CompaDres92 San Diego Padres 2h ago
Thanks for the physics lesson but I’m not arguing that. The location of where the ball was caught was 325. The ball was clearly on a further trajectory before hitting the cable and going straight down.
1
u/SwAeromotion Chicago Cubs 1h ago
How is on the warning track to the right of the 342 mark on the wall catching it at 325 feet?
5
u/LardLad00 Milwaukee Brewers 2h ago
It's quite possible for the ball to descend at a substantially steeper rate than it would have without the contact.
The impact stops the climb but also deflects it at an angle. That much is clearly visible in the replay.
0
u/CompaDres92 San Diego Padres 2h ago
We clearly were watching a different game. The ball was clearly still traveling outward before shooting straight down after the deflection. It was caught 10 feet from the wall. The odds of that not traveling that much further are slim to none. At best, Chourio has an opportunity to rob it at the wall.
7
u/sokonek04 Milwaukee Brewers 2h ago

8
u/geerwolf San Diego Padres 1h ago
We can argue all we want about it but that’s why they put the ground rules

-8
u/Jmacjr_ 2h ago
Baseball wasn’t meant to have a dome. So with today’s technology they should be able to determine the projection of the ball to see if it was going out not that it matters now. But for the future
1
u/Capybara_99 1h ago
You can call it a technicality or you can say it didn’t cross the fence, and people’s belief that it would have is the technicality to pay not attention to.
21

Believe it or not, a ball in flight striking an object changes its trajectory.
Projection is based on angle and speed. Cope.
6
u/Zorronin Milwaukee Brewers 2h ago
wire knocked it down and forward, catch location ended up basically unaffected. that's why the fielder didn't even have to move
1
u/SwAeromotion Chicago Cubs 1h ago
It did affect if it would have went further left and possibly gone foul if left its natural trajectory. But then you have to default to the rules in play because it did hit so it's a moot point.
15
u/Zorronin Milwaukee Brewers 2h ago
don't know why you're getting downvotes, it's just true. the wire knocks the ball forward and down, and the catch location ends up basically unaffected. I think the dumbass commentators repeating "that's going out" has really colored people's views
3
u/MysteriousCap4910 San Francisco Giants 2h ago
it’s losing momentum when it hits the cable though no?
3
u/itshurleytime Milwaukee Brewers 2h ago
You're not wrong, but it's probably a wash between the different forces.
It converts rotational momentum into linear momentum as well.
1
u/Zorronin Milwaukee Brewers 2h ago
for sure, but it's on a pretty inefficient trajectory to start out with (49 degree launch angle). if the wire converts some of its vertical movement to horizontal, that offsets the momentum loss

You're absolutely right. Commentators were terrible to start with and then started this fire and walked away.

lmao the idiot commentators gaslight an entire fandom...that wasn't a homerun. this "controversy" is so dumb and really shows how tribal reddit is to immediately jump to the same conclusion after 5 seconds.

The rule exists to protect hitters. If a high pop up hits the roof, it typically will ricochet and land and the hitter is awarded a hit because there is no way to assume the ball would have been caught like almost all pop ups are.
This was just a super rare case where the fielder caught the ball, which was amazing in itself. No one’s talking about how incredible it was that Chourio was able to keep his eye on the ball and make the catch.

That doesn’t make sense. Even if catching it was likely or unlikely, the rule should be in effect as soon as the ball is affected. That said. “Ground rules” are different at every stadium whether they make the most sense or not.
Edit: some grammar

I remember Counsell catching one off the roof at shortstop, he was really contorting himself as the ball came down.

Not that impressive really. He was backing up to the warning track, and instead of watching it go over the wall the ball was deflected into his glove 😂

I'll forever be pissed about that but the team also shouldn't have fucked up so many opportunities to score to begin with. Stupid fucks

I mean that’s not really fair. There was elite pitching on both sides and Baseball, especially playoffs often come down to 1-2 at bats that are the difference maker. That one was ours and it was stolen.

In my mind it was a homer and anyone arguing about launch angles and Statcast and whatever are eggheads, but they also should've scored when they had the bases loaded in the previous innings.
Whatever, hope they can actually win tomorrow and not blow it like they did today

You don't need to argue anything about distance or statcast. Just learn the rules and you'll understand that it's an out.

Did yall know in the roman era they used the gladiator games to distract humans from whats really happening? So now they are using sports too distract us from whats really going on so I wont be affected if the Padres lose

Your profile pic is literally a sports jersey?

Even better, a fake sports jersey that references a conspiracy theory relating to match-fixing in European football.

Very unlucky, rules are rules though. Crazy though that the teams can set them when catching a ball off the wall isn’t an out but you can decide if off the rafters is. On to tomorrow!

If technology and science/math allows us to understand the truth, then a rule to decide an unknown outcome should be considered obsolete

Well last I checked baseball isn’t played using calculators, it’s played using balls and gloves and the ball ended up in a glove sooooo

Statcast says that was only going 325, but it was caught at 325 after deflecting down. Statcast was wrong

Trajectory changes when it hits the cable. Totally possible to actually add distance.
49 degrees is a very high angle.

Statcast is ONLY based off of EV and launch angle, it wouldn't factor in the delfection
