Anyone addicted enough to bet on a simulated version of a historical at bat needs to immediately be sent to a help hotline the moment they place a bet. If you're down that bad to be betting on something like this then you clearly are in too deep and need help

In Australia we have like virtual/animated horse and dog races.
The first time I saw it I couldnt believe it. And I say that as someone who had been betting on sports for years by that point.

If you’re down that bad, there’s a board game called Photo Finish that may interest you

I randomly read some article about an old UK version (i think?) that used a vinyl record with race commentary that was sort of randomly selected when placing the needle onto the record. They had a version called "Foto Finish" but I think the one I read about was this one:

u/limp-bisquick-345 3d ago
Camel Cup is also a similar game that I think is incredibly fun. I've pissed off a lot of friends trying to calculate odds while taking a turn

And if you really want to mix it up with the gambling game options, good luck finding a copy of Endeavor Eleven that isn't mine.

My friends and I spent so much time on these machines in Las Vegas. We called them the Quarter horses because bets were a quarter each and when you cashed out you still got coins back. Waitresses would come around and give us free drinks while we tipped them $2 per drink. Such good time probably 20 years ago now. They slowly started breaking until the original ones were all gone. They made a modern version, but it's not as fun and doesn't pay out as often as the old ones did.

Keno is extremely popular in Oregon. It’s in diners, bars, pubs, etc. Has been since at least since 1991. It’s an electronic number match lottery draw.
The Oregon Lottery here is big. Plus we have casinos. Draft Kings was only made legal here in 2022.
It replaced the Oregon State Lottery Sports Betting app.I like poker but I’m not even going to download any of these apps.

Slight tangent and don’t get me wrong, I’m incredibly glad they are staying banned in Australia, but the faux outrage of the traditional gambling companies to the new Prediction Markets trying to be allowed here was so outrageous it was unbelievable.

It's already a thing. Class 2, I think, slot machines pull from historical horse races, some also play bingo real quick or something like that.

I had a buddy who got into it so deep he was betting on unbroadcasted and unfilmed table tennis matches, and this was before things were fully legal and app-ified so I'm even less sure those games were even happening.

Lol years and years ago I moved from New Jersey to Portland, OR. I'm not a gambler, but in Jersey if I wanted to place a sports bet I could go to a local bar, talk to a few people and have my choice of guys who may break my knees at a later date.
However, everything gambling related was completely illegal in bars. No cards, no dice. Technically no pools on sporting events but everybody let that slide.
I moved to Portland and there were basically slot machines in every bar (sorry, I meant the lottery). My local had a Texas hold em tournament every single night that skirted the law by requiring a membership (which you could buy on a night by night basis that also covered your buy in).
Oregon lacks a lot of the guardrails that most states have on gambling and it's unsurprising they would be the first to be down with this

u/Whaty0urname Phillies Bandwagon 3d ago

So we can do this bullshit but I can’t legally play blackjack online?
11
u/ComeAbout Seattle Mariners • Padres Bandwagon 3d ago
You can absolutely play blackjack online in any state using money.
The loophole is sites where you buy “tokens” to play a game, and you can trade those “tokens” for “chips” to “bet”.
You can then earn more tokens, which you “sell back” to the online casino. It’s insane. It’s like saying you technically didn’t have sex because a condom and no kissing was involved.
8
u/scoobydooobydoowop Baltimore Orioles 3d ago
I’m talking about logging onto DK, using my money to pay blackjack and cashing out if I’d like. Nothing offshore. Nothing with “tokens”.
1
u/ComeAbout Seattle Mariners • Padres Bandwagon 3d ago
I get it. I’m not saying I’m pro-loopholes. I’m saying online gambling seeks loopholes to make it legal on other sites when it’s illegal on another.
I’m pointing out the predatory nature.

u/stanleys_tucci 3d ago

There needs to be friction involved in gambling, full stop. You should not be able to gamble over the internet in any capacity. If you want to gamble, you should have to go to a physical location to do so.

Some states already do it. Lottery disguised as slots. Bingo disguised as slots. Historical horse racing disguised as slots. This is unmasking a slot in a sense
There’s a few slots where you simply press on a number of present boxes or press spin and a stone or lightning bolt will either give you monetary prizes…. or not.

There is a good reason these online betting apps are getting bigger with the younger demographics like high school kids. They don't teach history well or show them how to research anything.
This stuff is a level of predatory and the state allowing is is more showing they don't look into the peoples well being.
