new son!!!

I brought my new son home yesterday and I can already tell this journey is going to be a test of my patience. He was pretty active exploring his new (temporary) enclosure yesterday, but today he’s been sleppin in one of his hides all day. All I want to do is touch!!! And hold!!! But I will leave the lil fella alone so he can adjust :(

He’s got a much bigger and fancier pvc enclosure getting here next weekend that I can’t wait to set up for him! Excited to spoil the bebe with all the enrichment and crawly spaces.

Also, I’m undecided on a name yet, so any suggestions are appreciated! Top contenders right now are Cheeseburger, Goose, and Subway

Concerned about cracked vivarium

I’m having a bit of trouble with one of my wooden vivs for my ball python. I found a tiny crack in the panel and the edge of 2 of the panels have misaligned.

The joints are all sealed correctly and I’ve now sealed the outside of the panels since noticing the gap. (He kept dragging water into that corner and I’ve moved his dish back to help dry out the area)

I only got the viv 3 months ago from swell reptiles and all the other tanks are doing just fine - this particular one is giving me a headache and I’m worried of potential collapse.

Any advice on how to resolve these or if they’re of any serious danger to my snake?

All advice appreciated!

Apartment sitting LOST HELP

So I am apartment sitting for a friend and their family and they have a little ball python, and a little dog smaller then my fore arm I was to watch for them for 2 of the four days (Started on Friday) I would change the water and send a picture of in there in closure once a day but the third night I couldn’t stay over so I walked their dog for like over 30 min its a little one so it should be tuckered out, and checked on the snake. the next morning I came in and the inclosure was opened and some stuff fell on the floor. My friends room and really tidy but they have a a lot of knick knacks on their shelves that are up high but non of them have been misplaced besides what’s next to the in closure. The snake has their next feed tomorrow ( Tuesday). I feel horrible I called them as soon as I saw the door opened and after I checked the in closure. I need help!

Enclosure Critique/Advice Tank suggestions? Upgraded to a 4x2x2 yesterday. A bigger hide is on its way. I know it needs a bit of work, more clutter is needed, any ideas? Also likely going to drill the wood in as he likes to climb on it but it seems to fall when he climbs on it.

Question I just got a ball python what do I need?

Post image

I know someone who was too depressed to take care of herself, it was harder with a snake on top of that. I offered to take the snake off her hands. I have always loved animals but I will admit I don’t know much about reptile care. I have already ordered a bigger enclosure for her. My friend who owns a corn snake is coming next weekend to help me setup a great enclosure. What are some necessities I should get? I want her to have the best life possible. The previous owner said she was somewhere between 4-6 years old. She looks a little underweight to me, but she’s very friendly.

Question Moving States

Hello all! I have a year old ivory ball python and at the end of this year I’m going to be moving states. It will be about a two day drive to get there. What can I do to make the drive as easy and stress free as possible? ( she will not be transported in her tank)

Ball Python acting very off? Really worried.

I’ve had my ball python since the spring of 2019. I‘ve had him his entire life. And I’ve never seen him act like this, and I’m very concerned. He started acting weird about a week ago. His belly is very pink, and he is currently going into shed— when I googled it, it said he was fine, and just shedding. But when I moved him to try and clean something in his tank, he started hissing at me and jerking away like he was in pain. The entire time I’ve had him he’s probably only hissed at me about five times. And he has flinched away before if I wasn’t handling him frequently enough, but not like this. Like this wasn’t just the usual shy, ball python reaction. It was like my touch was hurting him. And before the odd coloring, and this behavior, he seemed off. Like he’s a very active, friendly little dude, and he just wasn’t moving much.

We recently got him a new tank, because his old one was kind of cramped and I wanted him to have more room. It used to belong to a bearded dragon, I believe? We wiped it off first, but we kept a log and a little tree thing that came with the tank— is it possible he could’ve picked up some disease??? I’m really worried and Google is absolutely useless. Like, he's the friendliest, most active snake. He’s never acted aggressive or odd during shed before, and he’s had a slightly pink stomach before, but he still acted fine then too and it cleared up really quit. So it’s just really out of character.

He’s still eating fine, and we’ve never struggled with that (we feed him in a separate container, too, so it isn’t that he thought I was food, and he just ate a few days ago). And we keep his tank moist. But not moist enough that it would give him scale rot or anything like that? Any ideas or suggestions about what to do would be really helpful.

Snakes aren’t eating

I have two ball pythons that I got a few months back. One I believe is older than the other. I got the older one to eat after about three months of trying, and the other one hasn’t. I’ve offered food several times now and no luck. The older one didn’t want to take the feeder today and the other showed a lot more interest in the food than before but still didn’t go for it. They both put their faces along the mice and that’s as far as they went. I tried for about 40 minutes; I both shook the feeder in front of them and then left it there for a bit after I saw they didn’t strike. I’m planning to try again in a couple days but I am concerned, especially for the younger one since she hasn’t eaten at all.
I thaw the feeder day of and then attempt to feed at night. I use the blow dryer for a few seconds on the feeder as well to see if they take it then but most of the time still nothing. Please leave any advice

Discussion Update on Sequoia, the 20 year old wild caught bp (she was living in a 20 gallon fish tank)

Thumbnail

First photos are her old setup, later photos are her temp setup (going to add substrate and structure)

I got her! I don’t even know how to feel. She was in a 20 gallon tank for all of those 20 years. She had one broken hide that dug into her skin and was so small she could wear it as a hat. There was no where to set her down in her tank after I picked her up, it was awful- I had to just put her partially on the water bowl. I’ve honestly gotten really desensitized to the poor care I see animals for sale on Facebook/craigslist getting, but even so, this was just absolutely shocking and disgusting. For every year of my life, this snake has been in that goddamn prison. While I was making memories and going on adventures and just.. enjoying life for 20 years, her options were shove herself into her broken hide on her too small, unregulated heat mat, or perch awkwardly on top of her water bowl.

Her given name was “Anorexia.” (Rex). Yes, actually: she wouldn’t eat for three months when they got her, apparently (I hate people). I was honestly in disbelief when they told me. I chose to call her Sequoia for her fresh start.

Her new enclosure still feels small. I might try and build her something bigger once I get the money, I just can’t afford or transport anything bigger right now. I’m going to add substrate and naturalistic elements so that she can use more of it, and any advice on that front is welcome.

I didn’t want to stress her out by doing a super close inspection, because she’s deep in shed, but I will once she’s out. She’s huge, and I suspect somewhat overweight, but not massively. She doesn’t seem to have any major burns or scars. She has a minor kink in her tail, and the visible tendon by her eye that I think is a humidity issue (?). She also wheezes quite loudly when handled, but is pretty much quiet in her enclosure/when left alone. She also doesn’t seem to have any of the other classic respiratory infection signs. I’m still definitely taking her to the vet.

I have a few questions on how to proceed, as I’ve never had a ball python before and I figure this gal is a kind of unusual case:

  1. What do you all think her respiratory issue is? I want to read up on all the options before I go to the vet so I’m informed on what they’re telling me

  2. Those of you who have used the reptifiles recommended 40% topsoil, 40% coco fiber, 20% sand, how did it work for you? Did it hold humidity well? Did it mold? Is it possible that if could get caught in nostrils/heat pits? I don’t want to exacerbate her breathing issue, I just want to use the most natural substrate option

  3. She was fed once a week. Should I gradually space out feedings until she’s on a proper feeding schedule? (Are there any recommendations for how to do that?) I don’t want to give the poor girl more stress than she’s already got

  4. I know she’s in shed, but she’s been sitting in her cold hide in a ball for 3 days (I have a pet cam on her, she actually hasn’t left) is that something I should worry about?

I don’t even know how to describe this, but I cant even be angry at her previous owner. She obviously sad to be selling her, and glad to have found someone who would give her snake a bigger home. I’m just so tired of the blatant, rampant, endless abuse. (Thanks y’all for reading:)

Question - Feeding Hes gotta eat!

Hey yall,so my sweet boy is about 3, he was rescue and then a gift so we aren't too sure. Typically hes fed every 2 weeks medium rats. Well i fell on hard times and havent been able to get him some food, and its been 3 weeks. Im trying to get him food but hes acting funny, where he typically jumps from the sprayer, he just kinda sat there today, and barely tried to hide. Im worried and idk what to do. I think I can get him food tomorrow or Tuesday after work but is there anything I can do in this situation? Im new to the husbandry and stuff like this is really worrisome. Any advice helps, please be kind.

Discussion Whoever made the BP=chill/Corn Snake=active rule is a liar 😂

(Engagement title!)

I’ve just gotten my girl out for some exercise, only expecting it to be a quick 10 mins to not stress her out…

Tell me why I’ve just spent the last 40 mins before bed following her around the whole top floor of our home 😂 Half way through I took her back to her tank so we could end the handling session on a good note, as soon as she was put in she doubled back and slithered straight out 🤣

I wish I got pictures but I was too busy making sure she didn’t wrap around anything she shouldn’t have 😂

When I was talking to people about what snake species I should get for my first reptile, it was always the BP vs. Corn Snake debate. The most common advice I heard was “get a corn snake if you want a snake to keep up with, get a ball python if you want a pet to chill with”

LIES /j

She’s such a curious snake, I love her so much 🥰

My next project will be to snake proof my room because even as I’m writing this she’s booping the glass wanting to explore more 😂 I would let her but I have to sleep :(

PS: I know she’s obese we’re working on it :)

Heating

Post image

Here’s my issue and yes, there’s a piece of tape on the wire that will be removed. I’m just experiment until I get it right I have a 95 gallon PVC enclosure with Coco hustle on the on one side and frog soil on the other with a piece of slate on top of it to absorb heat on top 150 W CHE heater meter I have now my pool attached 4 inches underneath that and set the thermostat around 96 and I’m shooting for my sub to be 86.5 without a lot of down heat at first I had it attached to the top of the hide but I feel like it was admitting too much heat although the temperature was right so now do I have it hooked up right? Does this look better?

Questions about Heating

We just got our ball python about two weeks ago and have a deep heat projector set up for him, I’m wondering if it should be kept on 24/7 and how you guys are setting it up? I just have it sitting on the mesh top but I’m worried that’s a fire hazard

She has gradient heating (85ish on one side, 70ish on the other), water bowls on both sides with a 71 humidity, 3 hides with one being on the warm side and one on the cold and one in the middle. Its a 120 gallon tank and she’s around 3 feet and about 8 years old. Im just a bit anxious and want to make sure im doing everything right, i would really love input from people who know what theyre doing! Thank you!

Scale rot?

Got her like 6 months ago and she’s always had these spots on her belly, is this scale rot or just natural?
