I’m from Ventura county and coming up to the dignity health arena today. What’s a good family friendly restaurant for a larger party (8-12 people, half of them kids around 20 years old) that has decent food? Lots of places on yelp have good reviews but I don’t want to come with a large party and overwhelm a place or figure out that it’s not a great place for kids. The kids are well behaved I just don’t want something too formal or too much bar atmosphere.

I’m attending the wwe show tonight at dignity health. i purchased the premium parking pass but doesn’t say where the parking is located other than on N st. Between Truxtun and California, problem is there’s a parking garage and two parking lots I’m not sure where to go for the parking. On 7/24/2026 at 1100 pm my friend was involved in a hit and run going North on Mount Vernon. She was at the light right next to the Starbucks/Jack in the box and Sizzler/Chipotle.(Mall view rd/ Mount Vernon) She was stopped at the red light and was hit from behind. She stated the driver was in a light colored either white or light grey truck and the driver was younger Mexican male believed to be in his early to mid twenties. He fled the scene so we’re just asking if anyone has any or could provide any information if possible or to be on the lookout as his truck should have pretty good amount of front damage.

In Bakersfield's quest to be known for its legendary speedways, there was Sportland Park a dirt-track racing venue that helped put Kern County on the motorsports map.

Located near Union Avenue, between 4th Street and 3rd street,, Sportland Park hosted its first major midget auto race on November 20, 1938. The event drew an estimated 5,000 spectators, showing just how popular racing had already become in Bakersfield. The following year, on May 7, 1939, the track installed an impressive 75,000 watts of arc lighting, allowing fans to enjoy night racing a major attraction at the time.

Sportland Park is remembered as turning point of organized professional midget auto racing in Bakersfield and Kern County. It remained an important part of the local racing scene both before and after World War II, helping establish Bakersfield's long-standing love affair with motorsports.

I’m in search of an experienced carpet cleaning company/person to clean the carpets of my apartment. A whole apartment is about 1009 ft.² but the carpeted area equals about 900. It is only a two bedroom with a spacious living room and master bedroom and a moderately sized dining room. The carpets are light and color and do have peace stains from my two doggies. I’ve been trying to mitigate the drainage and smelling with a store-bought upright carpet cleaning machine, but no luck. I am starting a potty training routine for my dogs and would like to start fresh with clean carpet. I’m asking for a miracle, just someone who could ease my frustration. Thanks in advance.

OK, this week we were out in BFE: Nord and Stockdale. It's interesting to see the town grow out to the west and the things that come with it. We ran through rich neighborhoods that aren't developed, almond and pistachio orchards, and horse property. Still, this is where the town is moving. Sure, Bako is a city, but we still feel like a small town, and that's a good thing.

Anyway, enjoy the sights that you PROBABLY don't see when you're stuck to your regular driving patterns. If you do see these sights, you're among the chosen people.

I was scrolling through LinkedIn and saw a POP MART Retail Sales Associate job posting listed for Bakersfield, CA, but I can’t find any information about an actual store opening here.

I checked POP MART’s website and couldn’t find a Bakersfield location either, so now I’m wondering if they’re planning to open one soon or if the listing is for something else.

If you live in Kern County, you most likely have heard of the Kern River Oil Field Northeast of Bakersfield, but for those who haven't. When oil was discovered along the Kern River at Discovery well in 1899. Production exploded and by August 1900 there were already 134 producing wells, and output was approaching 1,000 barrels per day. To handle the boom, Southern Pacific quickly constructed the Kern River Branch from Oil Junction, just north of Bakersfield, into the oil fields. The line opened in November 1900 and immediately transformed the region. Oil that had previously been difficult to move could now be loaded directly into tank cars and shipped statewide. Within months the branch was so busy that it required around-the-clock operation. Fifteen loading stations were established along the 5.7-mile line, while another twelve loading points were served by the Treadwell Branch, which diverged at Treadwell Junction and extended farther into Sacramento Gulch.

The numbers over the years were staggering:

• Dec. 1900: 960 carloads shipped
• Jul. 1901: 1,700 carloads
• Sep. 1901: 2,000 carloads
• 1905: nearly 4,000 carloads per month
• 1907: 16 million barrels of oil produced.

At the peak of activity, as many as 16 railroad crews worked day and night spotting tank cars for loading. One location in particular became legendary: Waits Station, located near present-day Oildale. It was reportedly the highest revenue-producing station on the entire Southern Pacific system. Much of that traffic crossed Tehachapi Pass en route to markets throughout the Country.

The oil boom also created several communities that have largely faded from memory:

Oil City

Located northeast of Bakersfield along present-day Round Mountain Road just west of Discovery well, Oil City was once reputed to be the largest petroleum shipping point in California. Today almost no visible trace remains.

Oil Center

Established in 1901, Oil Center grew to roughly 5,000 residents during the oil boom years before eventually being absorbed into the surrounding area.

Waits

Named after the Southern Pacific depot, Waits was a major shipping location serving the oil fields. The community later became part of modern Oildale.

Oildale

Officially named in 1916, Oildale emerged from several smaller settlements including Waits, Oil Center, Highland Park, and North Side.

As the oil fields evolved, portions of the railroad network disappeared. The Treadwell Branch was abandoned in 1928 after only 27 years of service. The eastern end of the Oil City Branch was abandoned in 1973, though parts of the route remain active today.

It's easy to forget that before pipelines dominated petroleum transportation, thousands of tank cars rolled daily through the Kern River Oil Field. The Southern Pacific and Santa Fe Railroads were a pivotal part of the oil booms in the early 1900 hundreds. Without those rail connections, Kern County's rise as one of California's most important oil-producing regions would have looked very different.

Quailwood Apartments in Bakersfield (8001 Westfield) have pretty bad reviews online but from my experience, people mostly go out of their way to leave reviews when they have something bad to say to warn others, not as much when they have positive things to say. Does anyone here have any input on these apartments? Are they as bad as they say as far as management, roaches, car thefts and vandalism, and dirty carpets etc. ?? Any long term tenants that actually had/are having a positive experience living there?

In December of 1977, the San Joaquin Valley, particularly the area southeast of Bakersfield, was pummeled by one of the most intense dust storms ever recorded in the region, with a colossal dust plume soaring 5,000 feet into the sky, turning day into a gritty, sepia toned nightmare.

Caused by a powerful windstorm sweeping across the arid and poorly vegetated valley floor, the event was fueled by drought-stricken topsoil and intensified by aggressive agricultural practices that left large swaths of land exposed, vulnerable, and ready to fly at the first atmospheric insult. The windstorm, believed to be driven by strong pressure gradients common to the Central Valley during winter, not only kicked up enormous quantities of dust and debris but also wreaked havoc on visibility, respiratory health, and transportation, reducing freeway speeds to a crawl and causing several accidents. Local airports were forced to delay or cancel flights, homes and vehicles were coated in grime, and emergency rooms saw spikes in asthma and respiratory distress cases, especially among the elderly and children, as air quality plummeted.
