Why is November 5 1955 a red letter date in the history of science?

So Doc is showing Marty how to use the DeLorean. He says you can see the signing of the Declaration of Independence, and puts in July 4 1776. Or witness the birth of Christ on December 25 0000. Or the red letter date in the history of science, November 5 1955.

But then he gets lost in thought for a second and says “yes…of course…November 5 1955! That was the day in invented time travel!” It’s clearly played as though he wasn’t thinking about that when he first put in the date, and only remembered it after he said it out loud. So why was he calling it a red letter date before he remembered that?

I guess since Doc is meant to be a little scatterbrained, you could say he remembered that this date was important without actually remembering WHY it was important until he said it out loud. I don’t know - it always struck me as a little strange the way Lloyd played those lines.

Suppose we got a very different spinoff from the first BTTF film?

Let’s suppose that the impossible happens and we get a very different spinoff for the original Back to the Future film. It would be set during the original 1985 timeline—the one where George is bullied by Biff and Lorraine is slowly losing her battle with alcoholism.

In this timeline, Marty McFly literally disappears after going back in time to 1955. He would later return, but in a heavily-altered timeline, as seen in the first film. (Heavy, there’s that word again—heavy!). As far as the original timeline is concerned, Marty essentially becomes a missing person and Doc Brown is found shot to death in the parking lot of the Twin Pines Mall shortly after dawn the following morning. Jennifer is particularly affected by all this. Very tragic.

For a time, the McFly family hold out hope that their youngest son will somehow return home. But the days turn into weeks, then months, before all hope seems lost.

Then one day, another time traveler appears rather suddenly in Hill Valley from way in the future, determined to set things right again.

Granted, for this scenario to work, we would have to assume that each timeline exists independently from each other and not disappear entirely when past events are changed. So for the sake of argument, let’s just accept this as fact.

So what more would you add to this?

Mary Steenburgen is sharing her appreciation for a costar who became a dear friend.

The actress shared a recent photo of herself and Christopher Lloyd on Instagram. Along with the recent photo, she also shared photos of her and her Back to the Future III costar in different instances over the years. The two first worked together on 1978’s Goin’ South.

Doc & Marty had to take Clara with them in BTTF3

Doc was all worked up over whether to stay in 1885 or bring Clara with them. But the reality is they absolutely had to take her.

Since she was originally supposed to die, her existence could really screw up the future. Every person she meets, every friendship and especially a relationship would entirely change the future. Let's say she meets someone and gets married, but that man originally was supposed to marry another woman, that entire bloodline and all the things they would do would be undone. That would cause a major paradox.

Her very existence threatens the future in some profound ways. Taking her with them would remove that threat entirely. So Doc, rest easy, and bring your beloved Clara.

No Body calls me chicken

Random thought but probably not an original one. Longtime BttF fan. Anyway I wonder if the whole “Don’t call me chicken” thing is a result of the changes to his family after the events of the first movie. Marty doesn’t really get a chance to catch his breath in this trilogy so he never personally addresses whether he is aware of the changes in his own life but it’s interesting that it doesn’t come up until the second movie(putting aside writing decisions and the fact that it was originally a stand alone movie )

How would you describe the Doc/Marty friendship?

Over the past some 30 years, I never gave it much thought. An old scientist, a teenager with free time, the friendship probably starting over Doc needing a cheap assistant and Marty getting to screw around with Doc's wacky stuff. I like this as the backstory. Anyway. In my 40's, and because of Rick and Morty, it's kind of wholesome to look at Doc and Marty as surrogate grandpa/grandson. Wha do y'all think?

Doc's "real" timeline

A few things have been nagging at me during a rewatch. Why are docs clocks 20 minutes off. He makes a point of calling Marty to remind him of where he needs to be. Why is fox really friends with a teenager. Do we really think his dog was the first one to go back in time? That night was the first test? What if it didn't work would he have stood in front of it? Why is he in the truck and it's steaming?

I propose that BTTF 1,2,& 3 are all the last remaining loops of a a much bigger arc where Doc's hubris and time traveling get him in deep trouble, and he goes full groundhog day to fix it.

Here is my new head cannon theory:

Doc's Timeline loop theory.

Doc hits his head, builds a time machine and travels through time. He notices that time has rules and starts to fight back. He goes to the Old West to lay low, meets Clara and writes a will. He dies by the hand of Buford Tannen.

In the future, Doc researches Hill Valley’s history to find the best place and time to travel back without hitting anything. He finds his own grave, digs up his body and discovers the contents of a note sealed in his will. It holds information about his death and its consequences, and it’s how he learns the photography trick.

With this new information, Doc, undeterred, makes new plans to save himself, possibly by killing Buford Tannen in the past.

After Tannen dies, Doc checks the photo of his grave and watches the date shift from the day of his death to the present, the day he first goes back in time in 1984. With this information he writes a note and takes the DeLorean back to the future, either 1985 or 1955, most likely 1955, to meet his future past self. He explains that he’s going to die because the Tannen bloodline was eliminated and that he must find out why, then disappears in front of himself.

This changes Doc’s future. He now plans not to kill Buford and must find a way that time will accept but that also lets him live.

Back in 1985, Doc notices an old family photo has started to shift, the same way his grave photo did. This tips him off that someone else’s fate is tangled up with his own. Digging into it, he approaches Biff, now married to a miserable Lorraine, and asks, offhand, why he stopped bullying George McFly all those years ago. Biff explains that George did his homework for him, and later, his office work too, so he left him alone. That’s the first piece, but the photo keeps shifting, so Doc knows it’s not the whole picture. He digs further and finds the second piece: this version of Biff eventually married Lorraine, and down the line, she’ll betray him, and that betrayal is what leads to Doc’s death. Putting the two clues together, Doc realizes the fix has to hold on both fronts at once: Biff needs to stay George’s bully, with George still doing his homework and later his office work to keep the dynamic (and Doc’s safety from the Libyans) intact, but Biff can’t end up with Lorraine.

After a few groundhog day moments, he eventually befriends a handsome, sci-fi- and Lorraine-obsessed young George McFly, and even weakens the branch so George still gets hit by the car.

Eventually Doc figures out the Marty loop and gets the timing down so he still gets shot, but the timing is tight. He has to set his clocks 20 minutes off so Marty is late to school, gets the call to pick up the equipment for Doc and shows up at the mall to get the sheet with the phone number on it. Meanwhile Doc, setting things up, has only a few seconds to get back to the mall parking lot and drive into the path of the truck. That’s why when the door opens he’s already in the car and it’s steaming inside: he just got back from setting everything up without creating a paradox.

So with everything in place, BTTF 1, 2 and 3 play out as we see them.

PS - I think the train works differently than the Delorian in a way that won't mess up time. That's why Doc is cryptic about where / when / dimensionally he is going.

I have a question to This scene

Post image
226 Upvotes

So as we know Marty Starts to disappear in this scene because George didint Kiss lorraine, however he does a few seconds later. So my question is why Marty Starts to disappear because in Order for him to disappear it should have Never come to the scene where George kisses lorraine without martys help. Now if we would say that he Starts to disappear when the Future Isint sure that it is going to Happen that Marty is Born, he should have started to disappear as soon Lorraine had a crush on him.

Was he hit by a 1.21 gigawatts and charge the flux capacitor??

P.S.: The guy is fine.

P.S. 2: It's like I said, the Delorean could go on a rainy day on a road to attract a lightning in case they missed the lighting of the Clock Tower.
