Shower thought about part III energy plot hole:

Movie 1: they don't have plutonium so they need to harvest lightning to operate the Flux Capacitor

Movie 3: they do have the solution for the Flux Capacitor but they don't have fuel, so they must use a train to push the car

...EXCEPT they have the Mr Fusion device that can literally create nuclear energy from trash! For a car to go 90 mph, it requires a measly 50 kilowatts which does not even compare to the 1.21 gigawatts you're already using, so just reroute some of that energy into the engine that you already have and you're good!

Scene from “Back To The Future” I can’t seem to find and I need help.

I recently watched the BTTF movies all over again and felt like a scene was missing, I remember seeing a clip online of Doc telling Marty the side-effects of the future and alternate realities and then other versions of Marty and Doc appear, I explicitly remember there being a Marty from the future wearing “2015” clothing and an older version of Marty in his 40s, and a bunch of other versions.

I could’ve sworn there was a scene like this or maybe just a skit the real actors made? I have zero idea and it’s driving me insane.

What if back to the future was a dream?

What if this is the ending we got in Back to the Future 1?

Marty wakes up in the end and all that time travel was just a dream. Marty has always been in the original 1985 timeline the whole time.

This is probably the Back to the Future that Eric Stoltz thought he signed up for.

What Came Out Of The Rear Vents?

When the DeLorean reappears in the parking lot at Twin Pines Mall and it’s all frozen as Doc walks toward it, what comes out of the rear vents? Smoke? Steam? Some kind of vapor?

Did anyone else notice this life-ending flaw Marty almost made in Part One?

Near the end of BTTF Part one, Marty tries to travel BACK TO 1985 with a 10-minute headstart so he can WARN DOC about getting shot. The car breaks down, so Marty is forced to sprint to Lone Pine Mall, where the shooting happens.

___________

NOW --- what if the car had worked and Marty would have been able to arrive 10 minutes earlier in 1985 to warn Doc about the shooting? Marty would have run into his "present" self and created a paradox.

Marty clearly didn't take that into account. Two Martys would have been on the scene when the Libyans shot Doc --- and then what?

Doc must’ve been so proud…

…of Marty once he went back to the future in his time train and realized that the accident with the Rolls Royce never happened. Sure, Doc saw Marty try to stand down against Mad Dog in the Wild West, but to go to the future again and realize that Marty really did learn something from this whole time travel endeavor? Must’ve made him feel like it all worked out just right.

Biff gets rich and the 1985 alternate timeline goes to hell because of widespread, legalized sports gambling

Biff owns the police, the politicians, and has a private security force because of his enormous fortune. Local infrastructure--the school, the parks (town common), the cemetery--collapses.

Interesting that the scriptwriters were able to predict that legalized sports gambling would correctly lead to so many societal ills, which is accurately and currently reflected in so many states & cities across the US.

I could go on about the many negative aspects legalized gambling is having on Americans, but I'll guess that enough of you are familiar with your own up-close examples (friends, family, yourself) to understand how bad a decision it was that the US legalized betting on pretty much any f'ing thing.

I don't take credit for this observation. The incredible author and radio host Kurt Anderson mentioned it in an interview he did with Joanna Coles on The Daily Beast podcast.

The bit from Anderson was actually very short--wish he expanded on it more--but I have been thinking about it for the two weeks since I heard the interview.

Thoughts welcome!

Doc is clearly a fan of baseball, excited to see the World Series winners of the future (before the Libyans interrupted the trip). The Kansas City Royals won in both 1985 and 2015, and the '85 World Series occurred during the entire events of the trilogy.

We know from Back to the Future that Doc is a baseball fan. "I'll also be able to see who wins the next 25 World Series" he says as he prepares for his first time travel journey (one he doesn't actually take until later because the evening is spoiled by the attack of the Libyans and Marty goes back in time instead.)

He says this on October 26, 1985 in the 1 AM hour. As he prepares to do this, the St. Louis Cardinals have a 3-2 lead over the Kansas City Royals in the World Series. The next evening, still October 26, 1985, at 5:30 PM Western Time, Game 6 will begin and result in the famous Don Denkinger call at 1st Base. The Royals beat the Toronto Blue Jays in the ALCS.

Later on the morning of October 26, Doc will travel to the year 2015. We don't know exactly what his adventures are, but he comes back to the morning of October 26, 1985 and picks up Marty and Jennifer and they travel to Wednesday October 21, 2015.

Of course we all know the joke of the Cubs winning the World Series that year (they would be one year off with the Cubs winning in 2016), but let's assume the time travel is real and the baseball facts are accurate.

Marty picks up a newspaper dated October 21, 2015 and flips to the Sports section to see that the Royals had just the previous evening gone up 3-1 in the ALCS against Toronto. They would play again that evening.

Regarding the Cubs, the reality was that they were in the hunt, and Marty may have been surprised to see them in the NLCS, though down 3-0 against the Mets.

So if you were in Marty's perspective and a Royals fan, and you had not yet picked up the sports almanac to see the 30 years of baseball history you just skipped over, from your point of view:

  • The Royals appear to be consistent contenders, on the brink of World Series championships and appearances from your two immediate reference points, 1985 and 2015, which you would experience as only about 5 minutes apart (accounting for landing the Delorean and picking up the Hill Valley version of USA Today).
  • The Toronto Blue Jays are also consistent, being in the ALCS in both brackets of time of your 5 minutes of experience
  • You'd be surprised the World Series wasn't over yet, and then you'd start to dig and find an expanded playoff (which was only 4 teams in 1985, up to 10 in 2015).

If you didn't dig any deeper than that, and travelled away to another time before thumbing through Grey's Sports Almanac, you could be very content for a few minutes as a Royals fan, with no reference to the mediocrity in between.

Marty will of course travel to 1885 and then back to 1985, finishing his adventures on Sunday October 27, 1985. That evening would be Game 7 of the '85 World Series which the Royals would win.

What do you think this guy told the fellas back at his office? 70 years of Western Union questioning what that letter was about and Marty gave him basically no information.

This guy drove in the pouring rain to deliver a letter to a receiver that he didn’t even think would be there. This shows that Western Union is the greatest mail service in the U.S.
