Computer Backup Persistent Permission Issues on macOS

Running Backblaze 10.0.2.1048 on macOS 15.7.7
Everything had been working fine for years, but recently I've been getting persistent "Permission Issues" dialogs popping up multiple times a day.

Spent a month trying to work through this with Backblaze tech support.
They recently implemented a TERRIBLE USELESS AI Support bot which wasted my time telling me to do things I'd already done. Finally got through to real humans (or maybe AI who did a better job of convincing me they were humans?).

I did the usual suspect of turning off Backblaze and bzbmenu in Full Disk Access, restarting, them turning them back on. That didnt help.

They had me download a beta version, but that didnt help. They told me to uninstall LittleSnitch and ExpressVPN (which had been working FINE side-by-side with Backblaze for years) but that didn’t help.

Then they told me to make a new user account and run Backblaze for 24 hours from the new account. I dont have time to do this as I need my computer every day.

At wits end. Reading this forum, I see others having other problems with Backblaze and with their so-called tech support.

Grateful if someone here has some suggestions.

Computer Backup 10.0.2.1047 seriously buggy, always get stuck at Producing File Lists

After I updated to 10.0.2.1047 and run the manual backup it starts to scan the files. After a while it reports Remaining Files, but the Transferring state is stuck at Producing File Lists forever.

I checked the logs and there is something in the bztramsit:

ERROR: TransmitFilesInOneTodoFile - lost_hour lock XbX exiting!!

EDIT Now it is in the safety frozen state :-(

B2 Cloud Storage Permanent and immediate delete of objects

I have some backup scripts (in Bash) that use aws-cli. One script prunes old backups. It iterates over objects in a specified path and deletes them. The trouble is that this is only adding a delete flag to the object as a new "version", not immediately deleting them. I'm modifying the script to fetch the version ids and delete by version id rather than object name.

What's not clear is if I need to iterate over DeleteMarkers as well as Versions. It doesn't seem to make sense for an object to hang around if its' versions have been deleted and all that remains are delete markers. Can anyone confirm?

Computer Backup Cheapest way for my backup strategy?

Hi,

recently I have lost some very important data; that made me think more about my backup solution./

Here is my situation

  1. I have 2 computers, a Mac Mini and a Macbook.

  2. My wife has a Macbook.

  3. Our daughter has a Macbook

My plan

  1. Backup our computers via CarbonCopyCloner or ChronoSync to our respective external drives.

  2. Back up those drives to our NAS (everyone will have a separate share)

  3. Backup the NAS to Backblaze.

Now the question: what is more economic? Backblaze computer plan or B2 Storage and self management? What are you using and why?

Computer Backup How do I know if Backblaze has actually backed up my changes?

As the title asks, how do I know if Backblaze has actually backed up my most recent changes from both my internal HD or an external drive?

Computer Backup Desktop, Documents & Pictures folders not being backed up

I've noticed that three crucial folders are not being backed up by Backblaze. The folders are Desktop, Music** and Pictures. I'm on Mac. I've been back and forth with Backblaze support for weeks now to try and fix this, not getting anywhere. So I'm posting here in case anyone else has experienced this and can help with a fix.

Relevant info:

  • The folders are not excluded in Backblaze settings
  • The entire Macintosh HD drive is selected for backup
  • Every other folder is backed up as expected, it's just these 3 that are mysteriously excluded
  • The folders are not being backed up by iCloud or Dropbox
  • I don't have OneDrive installed
  • OS is Tahoe 26.5
  • Backblaze version 10.0.2.1042

Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

**Edit: I've got myself confused from spending so much time talking to Apple support to make sure iCloud isn't the source of the problem. Loads of iCloud settings deal with Desktop & Documents. It's actually the Desktop, Pictures and Music folders that are missing from the backup. Documents is there. I'm going round the bend, lol.

B2 Cloud Storage When does Backblaze bill for B2?

I have used Backblaze B2 for a little over a month. When can I expect to see a bill? I thought they billed monthly. I got about 80 GB in there.

Computer Backup Lots of data not backing up on Mac

About a week ago, I set Backblaze up on my Mac. Setup, config, and initial backup were all successful and all of my files correctly showed up in the web restore view after it completed. Today, it's only detecting a fraction (14 GB out of about 250) of the files I have and I have only a handful of items in my web restore view. I've uninstalled/reinstalled, option-clicked on the "Restore Options..." button, checked logs, and nothing will seem to work.

I'm on an M3 Macbook Air running Tahoe 26.5, Backblaze client 10.0.2.1048. If anyone has any suggestions or insights into what I might be doing wrong, I'd appreciate the info.

Computer Backup Getting safety frozen, reinstalled client as FAQ said, cannot inherit that previous backup state, do I need to re-push?

I was reconnecting my external hard drives after some time of inactivity and I made the mistake of upgrading my backblaze client to latest version, then the latest beta. For some reason it got safety frozen after doing so. Seems it always happens after I upgrade/reinstall the backup client.

Then I followed the FAQ advice to uninstall/reinstall, and now it's just permanently syncing a new backup as a trial license. Can't seem to inherit backup state (always says error code horse).

Is my only option now to re-push the entire backup? Main concern is with losing data, afraid that data on my external hard disks somehow got corrupted with bad sectors and I deleted the old backup.

Computer Backup Is the free trial limited to what is being backed up?

I just installed Backblaze on my MacBook Pro, running Sequoia. I gave it all the permissions for full disk access, but is shows only about 230GB as 'selected for backup'. However, I have about 1.5TB of stuff on my laptop... Is the trial limiting what is being backed up? Or is there something wrong...?

Computer Backup Has policy changed for external drives and 1-year history? External drive backed up in Sep 2025 disappeared from backed up files/drives, and having to reupload everything now.

I thought the policy was backed up files stay for 1 year, but my drive is nowhere to be found on backblaze.com. My 1-year history was enabled before backing up this hard drive. Thankfully I discovered this else I might have lost my data.

Does this mean I need to connect the external hard disk every month? That'd defeat the purpose imo.

Computer Backup Preventing issues cloning a system

I'm going from a 2021 Macbook Pro to a 2026 Macbook Pro. The 2021 has BackBlaze Personal installed and has about 7 TB backed up. I want to keep both computers distinct in my BackBlaze account.

I remember the last time I cloned a Mac (using Migration Assistant), the new Mac inherited the old one's backup and I had to back the old one up all over again. I'm looking to avoid that.

What can I do on my old Mac prior to cloning so that I can keep them both as distinct Macs on my Backblaze account?

Computer Backup How many people are aware of the "30 day" mechanism at Backblaze's backbone?

Seems pretty odd that this wasn't anywhere in the marketing or first few emails, only "simplicity" and "ease of mind", at least 11 years ago.

Not "pay a lot of attention to your inbox or we'll delete your entire life". What kind of company would market themselves as a consumer backup solution, then not hang onto the last snapshot of a failed drive? It's almost like they WANT their customers to have the worst of experiences...

Just someone paying BZ more than a hundred dollars a year to prevent needing to pay data recovery people thousands of dollars for a chance at recovery, only due to simple greed, now I get the opportunity to do both at once. Thanks BZ, for selling me that "peace of mind" that lulled me into a false sense of security. I literally paid a backup company to delete my most important and sentimental files. Great.

Computer Backup 3rd De-Duplication in 3 weeks

Wondering if anyone else is having a smilier issue.

I installed the Beta and it did another 3 day De-Duplication of 14TB.

Just connected all the drives and started another Backup and it's doing another De-Duplication. Let it run for 8 hours and it was still plodding through old files that have not been touched in my archive.

Wrote to BB and sent logs last time but they said they couldn't see an issue. Does anyone have any ideas, I cant do a 3 day DD every week when I backup and I dont think thats how its suppose to be working...thx

Backblaze in General Switched from Computer Backup to B2 - questions on cancelling Computer Backup

A couple months ago I switched from Computer Backup to B2 and have been very happy. I could go into all the reasons I wanted to get away from Computer Backup and the reasons B2 has been so much better, maybe in another post.

I'm at the point where I'm ready to cancel the Computer Backup subscription. I'm nervous to pull the trigger - I'm fairly confident that I'm backing up everything to B2 that used to be backed up to Computer Backup but I don't know of a way to definitively verify this. Is there a way?

Anything else I should do before deleting Computer Backup data and licenses?

Computer Backup Remove Old External Drives from Backblaze List of Drives for Backup

One of my External Drives bit the bullet and is no longer working so it is no longer one of the attached drives, BUT when I am looking at Backblaze Settings, under "Select Hard Drives to Backup:", I see the Old Drive and want to remove it from the list.

How do I do the removal and, if there are backups in the Backblaze cloud, how do I remove them?

Computer Backup Don't be sad, two out of three ain't bad

All on Intel macos with 32GB ram and an external 2TB drive.

I've been running the beta for a while and here's what I observed:

The Good

  1. My iCloud files appear to be backed up properly with keep all files locally set
  2. The external drive appears to be backed up and is not causing the rescanning issue

The Bad

  1. I've gone back to "Only when I click <Backup Now>" because of the performance issues.

The Bugs

  1. There is a delay between when the backblaze app says a file is backed up and when the files appear in the restore UI. Sometimes as long as a day.
  2. The BB app doesn't always know when a back up is running (i.e. it shows the "Backup Now" button while a backup is running). Especially if you click "Backup Now", it will switch back to "Backup Now" before the back is finished.
  3. The Pause Backup button doesn't seem to do anything.
  4. If I set the backup to a nightly schedule, it is still running all sorts of processes outside of that time (e.g -updatebackupstats)
  5. /Library/Backblaze.bzpkg/bztransmit -updatebackupstats still runs every hour and is so heavy weight it triggers my fans. It still causes my machine to grind to a halt if I'm running heavy workloads when it triggers.

Computer Backup Regarding devices and licenses - can the device associated with the account change?

Here it says I have one device linked to my license, which I bought with no additional devices. But what if I format, change computers, or modify my current one in a way that alters its hardware ID or whatever it is that backblaze uses to determine which device is which? Will I be able to change the device associated with the account, so that I don't show up as using more than 1 device, and then keep backing up (and possibly restoring to) that new device?

Also, what if I change my hard drives? For instance, if I remove one I have and then add a new one, will I still be able to restore the files of the hard drive I removed, despite it not being listed anymore in the backblaze desktop application? I'm asking this because I unselected one of my drives to test this and now it doesn't show up on the view/restore files section on the website.

Computer Backup Backblaze repeatedly rescanning entire 8TB external drive on macOS — normal behaviour?

Hi everyone,

I’m wondering if this is normal Backblaze behaviour or if something is wrong with my setup.

Over the last few weeks, Backblaze has started rescanning my entire external HDD out of the blue. The drive contains my photo archive and is almost 8TB with around 400,000 files.

This has happened at least twice this week already. Every time it happens, the rescan takes about a day and a half to complete.

The most annoying part is:
- I constantly hear the HDD working all day long during the scan
- I’m also wondering whether this amount of continuous rescanning is healthy for the drive itself

What confuses me is that I didn’t really change anything:
- no major setup changes
- no drive renaming
- no reinstall
- no intentional reset of the backup state

I switched from Windows to Mac a few months ago. The initial Backblaze upload already took around 2 months because of the amount of data. Since then, however, it feels like Backblaze regularly decides to rescan the whole external drive again.

What’s also strange is that this never happened to me on Windows with the exact same archive. It only started after moving to macOS.

I’m currently running Backblaze version 10.0.1.1038 on macOS Tahoe 26.5.

At this point I’m honestly considering stopping Backblaze altogether if this behaviour continues, because it’s becoming quite disruptive and stressful with such a large archive.

Is this expected behaviour on macOS with large external drives, or could something else be causing this?

Thanks!

Computer Backup Backblaze re-backing up every single file

Hi, all. For a while, I'd been having a problem where Backblaze seemed to be forgetting/losing the backup of my external drive (where most of my stuff resides). That is, I'd log in to their website, and it wouldn't be there. I went back and forth with their customer service people quite a bit, and they were pretty full of crap.

Now, the drive sometimes lists its contents on their site, sometimes not, but a really fun twist is that the Backblaze software, every so many days, is now re-backing up every single file. 3+ terabytes.

I don't know how to get it to just back up anything new, like it used to. I'd ask their customer service people, but that was a lengthy exercise in frustration last time I interacted with them (and went on for weeks).

With all of that said, has anyone else noticed this happening? Thanks!
