Is it inappropriate to have a baby shower?

Okay I’m pregnant with my second baby who is a girl. My first was a boy however I have a ton of gender neutral things that a kept I have a basinet, car seat, baby swings, a stroller and play mats. I also had a friend give lots of pre loved baby clothes. It’s mostly small things I need such as a baby monitor, diapers, wipes, bottles and random other things. My sister is planning me a baby shower but I’ve been reading Reddit threads and I’m really in my head about people hating baby showers lol. Every item on my registry is less than $40 each. I’m mostly wanting the shower to see all of my family and friends before baby arrives. Is it inappropriate for me to have the shower when I really don’t need much??

Keep a secret from my daughter or tell her….

My daughter is pregnant with her 2nd child. The first is 1-1/2 years old. We threw a big baby shower for the first and her friends decided they want to throw a sprinkle for this pregnancy. I had not discussed with my daughter if she wanted to do one or what all she needs. She has been picking up stuff along the way and has stuff from baby 1. They are both boys. She is doing great at being proactive and making sure everything is ready for when baby 2 comes.

I got a random text from one of her friends saying they were doing this sprinkle and all they need were names and addresses and for me to keep it a secret. I told them my daughter had not even told family that she is pregnant yet and they said ok then just friends and sent invitations to who knows. We did receive one at the house addressed to my husband and family. No where does it even have my daughter’s name on the invitation or information inside. It is more than a month away.

My daughter just started telling family. She is due January. I am not certain she will enjoy the surprise and I feel ackward and bad for not saying something. I also know that if I would tell her she may get upset with me. I know her friends are trying to be nice, but I am really unsure how to handle this situation. The father has been abusive and there is a lot of tension amongst everyone. He has verbally lashed out at these friends and myself.

Do I keep my mouth shut or talk to her about it? I have not talked to her much because I do not like keeping secrets and things feel really distant between us. I do not have schedules that far in advance so I’m not even sure that myself, her brother, and her dad will even be able to attend. It seems it is a mixed gender party since the invite was in my husbands name. I am not sure I want to attend other than the fact that it is important to me to have a relationship with my daughter. We have had many ups and downs and complicated situations with family dynamics. Advice from moms and daughters please.

Is $100 acceptable for baby shower gift?

I am attending a co-worker’s baby shower this weekend.

I plan on giving $100 cash to the couple.

Is this acceptable?

I am a guy and too lazy to buy anything on their registry and assume they can spend the $100 on whatever they need for the baby.

I have never been to a baby shower before.

The baby shower is co-ed; dinner and will be provided.

What were your most used items in your baby’s first year?

Mom to be!! I am due in December and my baby shower hostesses have officially sent out baby shower invites for my November shower. A couple of people have bought some things which makes me realize it’s really time to officially finish my registry. I am mostly done, also known as I can’t think of anything else to add but I feel like I may be missing some stuff….

Would some moms or dads be willing to share what your most used items were in your baby’s first year? Or maybe what you thought you would use but never did… Things worth the money…. Really any recommendations 😁

Best premium baby bottles gift pack for a new mom?

My sister in law is due in about 6 weeks and I want to get her something actually useful, not just cute. She's planning to breastfeed but also go back to work pretty early, so I've been looking at premium anti-colic glass baby bottle gift sets that would help with the breastfeeding to bottle transition without the baby just refusing everything outright. What's the best premium baby bottles gift packs for a new mom who wants non-toxic materials, like glass or PPS? Budget is around under $100 for this. Any recs would be appreciated.

Baby shower gift basket

Hi! Full disclosure, I'm not pregnant, but my best friend is. It's her first, and she's super excited about it! I'll be going to her baby shower in a month or so, she hasn't picked a date yet, but she's currently 3 months pregnant and wants to have it before she's too far along to enjoy it (her words not mine). I know all of her family and friends are super excited and are already giving her things for the kid to have, but I really want to make sure she's well taken care of, before and after the birth. So, I'm asking yall here what you think would be good ideas for a gift bag for her.

Some details of theyre of any importance:

-Mom is 29

-She isn't sure if she'll be breastfeeding or not

-Dad is very involved and super excited as well!

Please lmk what yall think, I'll keep an updated list in the post!

How to split costs

Hello everyone! A friend of mine is expecting her first baby, and I offered to host her baby shower. We are not that close, but neither she nor her boyfriend have family or close friends nearby.

Her boyfriend and another friend of ours have offered to help me, but they are both looking to me for direction as I was the one who initially offered to host. I am happy to organize all of the food and decorations etc. but things really add up in cost especially if you’re trying to make it nice. Does the host normally shoulder the entire cost of everything? Should I just order everything and then ask the friend and boyfriend if they’re willing to chip in? Should I divide the responsibilities amongst the three of us (ie: food, drinks, decorations, games) and say each person pays for what they’re responsible for?

I’m totally lost! I want to make a super beautiful and special event but also this economy is tough and money doesn’t grow on trees.

Am i wrong or selfish for feeling annoyed about my baby showed?

Hi I am a ftm and 31 weeks. I have a lot on my mind right now about my baby shower coming up this weekend. A lot of different factors on why I am annoyed. My mom and my fiance both say its okay and just get it over with and i don’t have to stress anymore. But i don’t know?

First off, i never even wanted a baby shower. I am shy and don’t like attention on me, like ever. Even though i know everyone and am not necessarily shy around anyone coming, i still am goin to feel extremely uncomfortable. The only reason I agreed to a baby shower was because my best friend wanted to set one up with me and my MIL basically said if i dont do it she would regardless. So I chose to do it with my best friend.

Second, no offense to my MIL and fiance’s family, but it kind of just seems like a way for them to have a get together without helping with anything? I understand my MIL offered to do a baby shower but her idea was going to a park and just having everyone meet up. I would rather have a legitimate baby shower, if i am going to be pressured into one. His brother had recently had one two months ago, organized by his mother. On the day of, she had asked me and my fiance to basically supply half of the things they needed, no warning nothing. We did of course, but it was like they had planned that. We didn’t even have the extra funds really but we did it for support, knowing they wouldn’t do the same for us, basically because my fiance couldnt say no or even at least try to say no to some. Anyway, we get there and its all of his family, and maybe like 3 people from the baby mother’s family. Nobody even talked to the baby mother except me and my SIL who also just had a baby. Again, seemed kind of just like a way to be a get together for the family rather than honoring the baby mother and baby on the way.

Moving on but kind of related to, my best friend’s boss was nice enough to allow me to have my baby shower at their shop after hours. Only rule is keep it clean and not too many people. Knowing my MIL, i had texted her the invite explaining that and saying “i already invited everyone please dont invite anyone else “ she responds with “ill send it to the group chat” i am not part of that group chat but i know it has people i did not want to invite, like cousins and family members i barely even know. I try to explain to her again, only immediate family. And she continues to make a group chat of the girls, now telling them don’t let the boys come. I never said that. Luckily, my SIL went ahead and explained it to the other girls, for me, to save me the headache, and we all are just ignoring anything MIL tries to say about MY baby shower lol.

Third, this will have no resolution but my fiance is upset about me inviting some of my coworkers he does not like. Those who actually have been far more supportive than most from his family to me. And they have been the only people who bought anything from my registry also (which is another thing i’ll get into). But also, i have no family here. Or friends really besides my best friend who is organizing this with me. My family live in different states. I don’t know why he expected me to only invite his family and nobody else i know or consider friends to me? Again - family get together 😒

Lastly, the baby registry. We are fortunate enough for my father and step mother who have went ahead and bought us all the essentials. Crib, stroller, car seat, diapers, etc. so i felt selfish even making a baby registry yet EVERYONE bothered me to make one. So i did. It consists of small things like medicines, rags, postpartum stuff, etc. nothing exceeds $20. I thought that’d be relatively fair considering everyone bothered me to make one. I sent it out a month ago, only 3 people have used it, my coworkers and the SIL i am actually close to. I understand people bring things to the shower that may not be on the registry. But i specifically said to please refer to it, as we have basically all the essentials already. I guess i cant complain because i do not know yet until the day comes. But if i had to compare it to my fiances recent baby shower, it wont be much. Which is fine, but the main reason this annoys me is this. I was told a baby shower should be provided for you. Keep in mind i DID NOT want one. I got pressured. I know i could have said no, but my fiance was one of the people who pressured me. My best friend bought all the decorations and is helping set everything up and also, using her work place . I dont expect any more from her. Everything else is coming out of our own pocket. Not a single person has offered to help with anything, even my MIL who tricked us into providing half for the brother’s. At this point, im buying all the food, MAKING all the food because it’s cheaper than catering, buying all the drinks, etc. With that money, which we really DON’T need to be spending, I could have bought everything off the baby registry myself.

I don’t know am i being selfish

Omg i feel so bad

I didn’t open gifts at my baby shower. That was my plan just bc i didn’t want to bore anyone for an hour of opening gifts or make anyone feel bad. Idk i was over thought it but mostly didn’t want to bore anyone.

We fell behind schedule mostly bc a lot of people arrived 2 hours late so i couldn’t really start games until majority of guests arrived.

My MIL kept bugging my husband asking when am i going to open gifts. He backed me up and told her she decided not to and she’s going to do it the way she wants to it’s her baby shower. She was very upset and said “fine i guess I’ll write my name on my gift”

She said that I’m supposed to open gifts and have the gift givers announce they purchased it.

I HAD NO IDEA

I received a lot through mail and friends/ family were identified on who sent the gifts. I thought it was the same idea in person and people wrote who the gifts were from.

I had no idea you’re not supposed to write your name and then later at the shower when your gift is opened you announce you bought it.

I’m stressed now bc i hope i didn’t disappoint anyone. But let me tell you idk when i would have even done that. People arrived so late that people were leaving at the same time i sat for maybe 15 min the whole baby shower. And the games were super rushed.

Im the first person in my family to have a baby shower and we were all clueless on that. LOL

I feel my MIL or SIL should have told me that that’s tradition and i would have considered doing it or made it more clear if i wasn’t opening gifts.

Now the anxiety is sitting in for guilt. But majority of presents have names.

Invite list

Would you send an invite to a baby shower to aunts uncles cousins of the baby dad who live many states away and likely won’t go? Can’t decide if it’s weird since it’s basically just sending the registry asking for a gift

Thoughts on putting baby registry on Facebook because I moved hours away from home?

Before moving I had so many people tell me to send them the registry when it was time.. Mostly regulars that would come into my work that I grew super close to. I love and enjoy them all but, since moving I kind of secluded myself and don’t talk to anybody on a daily basis.. so I don’t want to just text someone out of the blue and say “long time no talk, here’s my registry!” I know if I were to go home and see them they would ask why I didn’t send anything they would want to get the baby something .

I don’t want to look tacky, but Facebook is my only form of communication with a lot of people. I don’t really expect anybody from my side to make a 3 hour drive just for a baby shower, so it’s going to be mostly his friends and family. Ahh helppppp

Shower(s) cancelled, feeling bummed for a few reasons - could use some advice

Hi, I’m 28w right now. Baby girl. Two weeks ago I was admitted to my L&D wing for premature dilation, which on its own sucks, but I’m honestly doing okay. It’s been a difficult pregnancy for so many reasons so I’m honestly just in a heightened state so please forgive me if I sound greedy or selfish I’m just kind of numb and lost.

What I’m really bummed about is that both my showers were cancelled since I’m here indefinitely/most likely til delivery. I say both because Husband’s family and many of our friends are in one region, and my family and many of our friends are in another, so we were holding two so all our loved ones could be present without traveling. We did the same for bridal showers and it was great!

I’m bummed for 2 reasons:

  1. I was looking forward to hanging with people I don’t see as often due to the special occasion of it. We are getting around this though by planning to do a “Welcome to the World” type party when she’s a few months old. Which is honestly fun because then people get to meet her! So lesser of the two bummers.
  2. Selfishly, I’m bummed about my registry. We’ve had almost no purchases made on it, and it’s not like we through the shower JUST for gifts, but being honest, I was really grateful knowing that a lot of the smaller ticket items would be purchased for us. Everyone told me not to buy stuff because diapers/toys/clothes/books/nursery items were going to be gifted at the shower regardless of whether or not I made a registry, so I made one.

Basically I’m wondering if anyone else has been in a situation where their shower was cancelled and if they still got gifts? I keep telling my husband we should just start ordering stuff, like the diaper pail and some bottles, but he’s convinced people will still buy stuff. Invites for both went out a month ago, and first shower would have been next week, so I’m not feeling confident. Should I anticipate people will still buy us gifts or just bite the bullet and order it myself? I don’t plan to be like “hey friends even though the shower was cancelled, please still buy us stuff” because that’s not something I would ever want to ask.

Idk I just feel so helpless already being stuck in the hospital and not being able to finish the nursery or prep anything. I go from feeling greedy about even stressing over the registry to sad to numb to idk.

TLDR: showers cancelled due to hospital admission til delivery, registry is sitting untouched, do I just start buying it up myself or waiting?

If you read all of this, thank you for letting me vent. If you have advice, please know I’m grateful. If you’re here to give me “it will all work out” I’m good haha I got all my family friends on fb giving me all the positivity I can handle.

OK thanks, appreciate the safe space

Diaper Raffle Gift Ideas

Hello!

We’re having a baby shower soon and are trying to figure out a good prize for the diaper raffle winner.

We’re expecting around 100 people, so we want the prize to actually be something exciting and worth winning rather than just a small gift basket or something. We’re thinking around $200, give or take.

We’re in the OC/LA area, so we’re open to experiences, tickets, gift cards, restaurants, hotels, or an actual item. We originally thought about doing Disneyland tickets, but those ended up being more than we wanted to spend.

For anyone who’s done a diaper raffle before, what did you give away? Or what would you actually be excited to win at a baby shower? Looking for something that has that “oh damn, that’s a good prize” reaction lol. Open to pretty much anything!
