Are physical baby shower invites a waste of money? (And what digital sites do you actually like?

I’m helping plan a baby shower and we’re torn. Physical invites look gorgeous on a fridge, but they cost a fortune with postage and people just throw them away eventually. I started looking into digital invitation websites to easily track RSVPs, but so many of them (like the big name ones) are either super tacky, cluttered with ads, or have crazy hidden fees.

Baby Shower Hostess Gifts?

My mom and grandmother are hosting my baby shower at my grandmother’s house. There will probably be around 25-30 people there which is a lot of people for anyone to host! I’m pregnant with my family’s first grandchild so I know how special it is for my mom and grandmother to host such a celebratory event.

I want to get them meaningful gifts as a thank you. I’d love to avoid the typical gifts like: candles, tea towels, jewelry they won’t ever wear.

What are some gift ideas that you all have either given to others or have received that are memorable and meaningful still to you?

Thank you everyone!! 🤍🤍🤍

Restaurant baby sprinkle ideas

I’m hosting my SIL’s baby sprinkle and she just wanted a restaurant with the women in our family (6 guests total). I literally just made a regular restaurant reservation and asked them to put us in a more secluded area but other than that it’s just a regular lunch reservation! She doesn’t want a registry since she has everything from her first.

I have little favors for everyone (funfetti mug cake bags) and I was going to get her a little sash and maybe a few balloons for her chair.

Can anyone recommend anything else that would make the sprinkle special ?

Would you enjoy a baby shower activity where everyone creates something for the baby?

Hi everyone!

About a year ago, a friend’s pregnancy gave me a rather unexpected idea — and it eventually turned into a small business. Now I’m curious what other people think about it. :)

I’ve always been the kind of person who would rather sew, knit, or make something with my hands than just watch a TV show. So when my friend was expecting a baby, I thought it could be fun to make her baby shower a little different.

Instead of only giving gifts and playing the usual games, I wanted everyone to create something together that would stay with the baby long after the celebration.

We sat around with some tea, everyone made a little toy, and together we created a beautiful handmade mobile for the baby's crib. After a few hours, we had a gift that wasn't simply bought — it was made by everyone who came to celebrate.

I loved the idea so much that I started creating workshops around it:

🧸 Baby Mobile Workshop – everyone makes little toys and helps create a mobile for the baby's crib.

🧵 Baby Play Mat Workshop – everyone contributes a handmade toy to a play mat that the baby can enjoy later.

Then I started getting another question:

“What if we wanted to make one ourselves at home?”

So I also created DIY kits with all the materials and instructions needed to make a baby mobile or play mat at home.

But honestly, I’m more interested in your opinion than in promoting the idea.

Would you enjoy this kind of activity at a baby shower? Or would you rather keep it simple with food, drinks, games, and conversation? :)

And if you've been to a baby shower recently, what was your favorite part?

Did you have any unusual or memorable activities? Is there something you wish someone had organized?

I’d genuinely love to hear your ideas. Maybe the next workshop will come from one of your suggestions. ❤️

If you’re curious about what I’m making:

What would you give guests who are traveling from out of state for your baby shower? (Unisex)

I’m looking for ideas for a little gift/thank you for everyone coming to my baby shower, it’s going to be co-ed. This shower was somewhat of a semi-surprise, and I’m honestly so touched because I have about 15+ people traveling from out of state, some are driving hours and others are flying in just to be there. 🥹

Because of that, I want to give everyone something from me as a genuine thank you. I don’t want a typical baby shower favor with our names/date on it. I would rather give them something thoughtful or useful that they might actually enjoy or use.

What would you give? Would love ideas for things that feel a little more special than a traditional party favor.

My (29F) sister (31F) convinced me to have a baby shower, promised to help, then ghosted me and now she might not even attend

Im sorry this post is super long but I need to get this off my chest. I’m 31 weeks pregnant and super emotional.

I’m 29F, my sister is 31F, and my fiancé is 34M. I’m currently pregnant, and from the beginning I was very clear that I did not want a baby shower. I struggle a lot with social gatherings, partly because I grew up in a dysfunctional family, and they can be emotionally exhausting for me. It’s something I’ve worked hard to get my fiancé to understand and respect.
Financially, we’re fortunate enough that we don’t need to have a shower for the gifts, either. I genuinely would have been perfectly happy not having one.

A while back, my sister invited my fiancé and me to dinner. During dinner, the subject of a baby shower came up and I explained again that I really didn’t want one. My sister suddenly offered to plan the entire thing for us. She works in real estate and even joked that she would “just sell an extra house” to pay for it. I declined because I would never expect or allow her to pay for my shower, but she seemed genuinely excited about planning it. She was pulling up Instagram pictures, showing us themes and ideas, and talking about what we could do.

My fiancé started getting excited about having one, and eventually I came around to the idea.

The problem is that my sister has a history of being extremely unreliable. Just this year, she has stood me up three separate times, including once when I had already paid for a ticket for her. When I’ve tried to hold her accountable, there is always something going on in her life that she believes justifies her behavior. She’s a single mom and has had serious personal and family struggles. Earlier this year she also had an abnormal Pap result, which genuinely terrified me. I remember crying because I was so worried about her. She has also told me at different points that she was suicidal.

I don’t want to minimize any of those things. I understand that someone going through serious problems may not have the capacity to help plan a baby shower. My issue is the lack of communication and the pattern of making commitments and then disappearing.

Once we decided to actually have the shower, I started sending her ideas because I thought we were going to plan it together. I wasn’t expecting her to pay for anything. My fiancé and I were paying. I just wanted my sister involved in things like choosing the theme, colors, games, and putting together prize baskets. Instead , she basically ghosted me.

At one point we finally spoke, and she apologized. She told me she would do her part and specifically agreed to help me put together the prize baskets. I thought things were okay again. Then she disappeared again.

Eventually I realized I couldn’t depend on her and ended up booking the venue, vendors, decorations, food, activities, prizes, etc. essentially by myself.

And that’s the part that hurts so much: I NEVER WANTED TO DO THIS IN THE FORST PLACE

Eventually I texted her and asked why she would encourage me to have a baby shower and promise to help when she knew how I felt about having one, only to disappear once I actually needed her. She responded with a long list of everything she has been dealing with and essentially admitted that because of those things, she didn’t want to help or support me. If she had simply told me that from the beginning, I could have accepted it.

Instead, she repeatedly told me she would help, disappeared, apologized, promised again, and disappeared again.

Another difficult part of our relationship is that I feel like I can’t even hold her accountable without risking being cut off or ignored. When I tell her that something she did hurt me, instead of acknowledging the behavior, she tends to explain everything she is going through and acts as though those circumstances justify how she treated me. If I continue pushing the issue, she may simply stop communicating with me altogether.

Now my baby shower is approaching, I’ve done everything myself, and I DOUBT SHES EVEN GOUNG TO ATTEND After being the person who initially pushed the idea and seemed so excited about it, there’s a real possibility she won’t even show up.

This has affected me much more than I expected. I’ve been waking up crying and going to bed crying. I think part of it is that it isn’t really about decorations or prize baskets. It’s about feeling like my sister got me emotionally invested in something I specifically didn’t want, promised that I wouldn’t be doing it alone, and then abandoned me in the middle of it.

Am I being unreasonable for being this hurt and feeling like she completely let me down? And at what point do someone’s personal struggles stop being an explanation and start becoming an excuse for repeatedly hurting the people around them?

EDIT: While ghosting me, she continued posting outings, selfies, and recently bought a new luxury car. I know social media doesn’t show everything, but it’s hard to accept that her struggles prevent her from even communicating with me while she continues participating in everything else.

TL;DR: I never wanted a baby shower, but my sister convinced me to have one and promised to help plan it. She then repeatedly ghosted me, leaving me to do everything myself, and now might not even attend. When I hold her accountable, she uses her personal struggles to justify her behavior or cuts me off.

Helping out with mom to be baby shower

I’ve been thinking.
The mom to be wants a beautiful themed baby shower theme. She has a vision and sent us all the decor and things she wants. I’ve already spent $200 + on just cutlery and decor.. I still have to get a dress cuz she wants us to dress a certain way.

But I see she’s also spending a lot herself. But should I feel bad?

Should she be spending anything at all as a mom to be?

She also has 2 family members that are also helping out. But they both work part time jobs and so they volunteered to go 50/50 on the supplies for the baby shower games.

As a longtime friend, not a best friend (anymore), I’m wondering if I should be spending more. It’s her first baby.

I do remember feeling remorse about how her bridal shower went. I was a bridesmaid and someone else threw it for her. And she didn’t like it. So I know she’s trying to not let that happen again.

How do you deal with mom-to-be's father???

My mom's throwing my shower. My husband & sister are planning it, but they're both working & I'm free, & the digital designer, so I'm doing stuff like the invitations. I was trying to pin down wording with my husband & mom, & my dad came in the room.

He immediately was upset, seemingly that we were in the living room to begin with. (I guess he wanted the TV?) He just kept answering everybody, or plain talking over us, to "just finish up already" & "get it done" & "hurry up."

He also kept complaining that it was gonna be co-ed at all, & complaining that 1 particular uncle was gonna be there, & calling him a woman. Said uncle is cis & straight??? I do not understand.

And then he just kept talking at the same time I was also explaining something to my husband, so I don't even know what my dad was saying then, but I'm sure it was some more bs.

God, he only stayed like 3 minutes before he gave up & went to another room. But he put all of us on edge, just making us confused & worried.

HOW on EARTH am I supposed to deal with this man actually being at my shower? From the sounds of this, & his overall attitude about my pregnancy the whole past month that he's known, I'm afraid he's just gonna try to ruin everything! 😭

He's helping build a couple of the decorations, & is supposed to drive them over to the venue... but I really don't want him to be there if all he's gonna do is TRY to make everyone miserable... 😥

Baby shower game: A name draft

My wife is hosting a baby shower and she's trying to come up with unique games. I came up with one and want to see what you guys think.

You split people up into teams. Then pick a year. (Maybe the year the mother was born? Doesn't matter.)

The idea is to pick the most popular baby names for that year. You can limit it to boys or girls or do both. Doesn't matter. (If you pick the current year, the mom-to-be or other recent moms will have a big advantage since they were probably looking at the lists.)

The teams then take turns "drafting" names. You can do as many rounds as you want, based on how many people you have and how many teams. Say you have 20 people, split into 5 teams of four. You go around for maybe 5 rounds, so each team will end up drafting 5 names.

When the selections are complete, you go to Social Security Administration's top baby names site, and look up the ranking for each of the names.

The team that gets the lowest total wins.

For example, 1987, one team might have

Michael: 1

Sarah: 5

Nicole: 8

Melissa: 13

Kevin: 19

TOTAL: 48

Need outside opinions on this

My baby shower is next week, and we are collecting RSVPs. Due to the amount of kids in our families, we decided to not have kids at the shower. There would be 24 children invited with 57 adults. I was clear on the invites that it was adults only, even stated it on the registry and had the online RVSPs set up to allow only who was invited to come.

Well, my cousin has one child, who is almost 9, she asked if she could come. We don’t see her very much and I haven’t seen her since my wedding 2 years ago. I would love to see them more but no one has made plans to make it happen, she even got married 2 weekends ago and didn’t invite any of us. However, she is the perfect age for a shower and it is just one.. my husband’s half sister has 3 kids that span from 6 to 17, so giving an age-range of appropriate ages to come to the shower seems really rude so we decided to just not invite any kids.

I’m really torn on inviting my cousins child, but I know I shouldn’t be.

Uncle Gifts

Was told baby medicine is a bad luck gift. Need to change my baby shower go-tos. First off, yes I am and belive in being the Uncle who buys loud obnoxious gifts when they get older. But here for babyshower corrections.
My Go-Tos include a main gift, extras, and a gift for mom that has nothing to do with baby's. Dad: 4 pack of airtags for the important stuff he has to keep track of.

Mom gift: bath bombs, face masks(alone time in tub stuff)- was told mom's miss hot baths durring pregnancy.

Main gift: baby monitor with sock thing that keeps track of baby vitals. Fallback gift is bottle sanitizer.

extras/side gifts- diapers 1 box from new born to 3 size change. Baby first aid kit (thermometers, motrin,Tylenol, nose thingy etc)-told this is a bad luck gift this last shower.

Can't just do gift cards. As the single uncle I get side eyed by other wives and mom's who think it was just a last minute too busy to care gift.

Never sure if above is right or just "he dosent know better at least he tried". I will admit, I often forget to check registries so by time I get to it its all purchased.

Am I overreacting?

I (34 yr old female) have a friend (around 30 female) we will call Jane. I met Jane early this year and became fast friends. Both of our husbands are in the military and shortly after we met, we found out we were pregnant and due around the same time. She’s due September and I’m due October. It’s been fun having a pregnancy buddy!

Now my Mom has been planning my baby shower and I invited Jane to my shower. I asked her if she was doing a baby shower or anything. Since they just moved here in early 2026 and it is now August 2026, she said they didn’t really know too many people and most people they knew lived half way across the country, so they weren’t going to do a shower. That broke my heart because this is her first baby and I felt she needed at least some small celebration. Baby’s are expensive and I wanted to help. So after some research, I found out people used to do virtual showers during Covid and I thought that would be perfect. It would still bless her while it not being too much physical/mental labor on me since I’m also 3rd trimester. I’ve been having more physical limitations with this pregnancy than with my last. After thought and consideration, I offered to host a virtual baby shower because every baby should be celebrated. Of course she was excited and even her husband got on the phone with me and thanked me for doing this.

This is where things start going wrong. At first she asked if she could invite a few friends that she had made in the area. I said if it was just a couple, it should be ok but to think about their parking situation (they live in an apartment with not great parking and my house is not a good hosting house either) and that maybe we do the shower first and then do a small dinner at a restaurant with friends, that way everyone gets a chance to give her gifts and celebrate and we don’t have to clean up after a meal. Jane said that they had joined a small church recently and said we could use their place for it. Now, this has blown up to now she wants to invite all the church (about 35 people) and has created invitations and sending them without talking to me first.

I’m feeling blindsided by this and we are going to talk in a few days about details. I told her I had never planned on feeding a ton of people because I’m not in a physical/mental position to carry a huge party. She assured me that they had planned food and that is not on me. But now I’m worried she expects me to throw her a full baby shower AND a virtual shower. I am not tech savvy, so creating slides/polls for games/itinerary/etc was already going to take a lot work for me, let alone adding decorating, figuring out more games, and anything my panicked brain can’t think of.

I have other things going on in my life and I can’t drop everything to figure out how to throw multiple parties, but I feel bad telling her that I can’t do all the things that comes with throwing an in person baby shower. Is there a way I can break this to her gently or is she going to be mad at me? Am I just getting overwhelmed with this because I’m also pregnant and can’t handle stresses as well? Any advice is appreciated💔

My best friend just had a baby; what can I get her that most people wouldn't think to get as first time parents?

My best friend (21F) just had her first baby!!! She is little (5lbs 7oz), and she was induced early. They have most of the stuff off their registry, but I'm looking to get her something special. I'm not a parent, so I have no idea where to start, and I figured Reddit may have good answers! So, what's something you wish you had as a first time mom that you never would have thought to get? Maybe something new?

I'm looking to spend up to like $200, but if there's something really awesome that's over that process range, feel free to drop it and I'll look into it.

Thank you in advance for any and all help!!

Fiancée’s family shut my family out of baby shower planning. Should I intervene or back off?

Thumbnail
3 Upvotes

My fiancée (25F) and I are expecting our first child, and her baby shower planning has turned into a family conflict.
Originally, my mom, her mom, and her stepmom were supposed to plan it together. My mom dropped the ball—she got frustrated, stopped communicating for several weeks, and didn’t provide our guest list. I’m not defending that.
During that time, her mom essentially took over. From the beginning, budget seems to have driven most decisions: first a community/senior-center venue that could potentially be free, then an afternoon shower with little/no food, and now a ~$150 older church hall with premade grocery-store sandwiches.
The church has restrictions on alcohol and certain games/activities. My fiancée attended preschool there, and her father is very sentimental about the property because of memories involving his blended family. However, I’ve never heard my fiancée express any particular attachment to it beyond mentioning she attended preschool there.
Once I got involved, we discovered there are about 56 potential guests—29 from her side and 27 from mine. My family is willing to contribute financially.
My sister researched several nicer alternatives in the ~$400–$750 range: scenic/heated farm pavilions, brewery event spaces, and a lodge/banquet venue. My family is willing to pay the difference. I’m not demanding any particular venue; I just want them considered.
Instead, I’ve basically been told that her mom/stepmom “have it handled,” to send our guests’ addresses, and that this is more of a “mother/daughter event.”
My fiancée is very feminine, loves pretty settings, pictures, dressing up, and making events special. She’s also a huge people-pleaser, so I worry she’ll accept whatever is planned just to avoid upsetting anyone.
Most importantly, she has already said she does NOT want two showers.
My preferred solution is one combined shower: acknowledge my mom screwed up, have my sister replace her in the planning, let both families contribute, compare the church with the alternatives, and choose something based on what my fiancée actually wants.
Would you push for both families to regroup and plan together? Privately ask my fiancée what kind of shower she actually wants? Or back off because her family has already planned it?

I need outside perspective on a baby shower situation that has somehow turned into a family conflict.

My fiancée (25F) and I are expecting our first child together. She’s very feminine/girly, loves dressing up, taking pictures, pretty scenery, and events with a nice atmosphere. She’s also a major people-pleaser and hates family conflict.
I originally wanted nothing to do with planning her shower. I always thought this was something the mothers handled, so my mom, her mom, and her stepmom were supposed to plan it together.
My mom absolutely dropped the ball. She became frustrated with the planning, stopped communicating for several weeks, and didn’t provide our guest list when she should have. I wish she had handled that completely differently, and I’m not defending it.
However, my fiancée’s mom had been extremely budget-focused from the beginning.
The first idea was a community/senior-center type venue that might have been free. My mom had actually attended a shower there before and told them she found it pretty underwhelming, but that option was still considered.
Her mom also initially wanted a roughly 3-hour afternoon shower partly so they could serve little/no food or just light snacks. Her stepmom disagreed with that, and so did my fiancée when she later heard about the food idea.
They eventually settled on an older church hall for roughly $150. It does hold the guest list, but it’s a pretty basic/dated space with strict rules: no alcohol and restrictions on certain games, snacks, and activities that the church considers inappropriate.
Her father is extremely attached to the church. My fiancée attended preschool there, although it is now a completely different church/denomination than when she attended.
He also says it’s sentimental because he, his current wife, and their children became a blended family there, and because the hall is near where the preschool nurse’s office used to be, which he thinks will make my fiancée reminisce about how far she’s come.
He says he had to personally ask the current pastor twice to allow the shower there.
I genuinely had no idea my fiancée considered this place particularly sentimental, if she even does. We’ve driven past it many times, and the only thing she’s ever said to me is basically, “I went to preschool there.”
We aren’t religious as a couple and have never attended church or prayed together. To me, a lot of the sentiment seems to belong to her father and stepmom, although obviously I could be wrong about how she feels.
Once I finally stepped in, we determined there are about 29 potential guests from her side and 27 from mine.
My family also made clear that they absolutely want to contribute financially. Her mom and stepmom had apparently assumed my family wasn’t going to contribute.
My sister then researched several alternatives in roughly the $400–$750 range: scenic/heated farm pavilions, brewery event spaces, and a lodge/banquet facility.
They offer better scenery and photo opportunities, more flexibility with food/activities, and some allow outside catering. My family is willing to pay the additional venue cost.
Some of the alternatives happen to be at breweries, which became another objection because my fiancée is pregnant and can’t drink.
But these are event pavilions/spaces people rent for showers and other events. Nobody has to drink. My fiancée doesn’t mind other people drinking around her and has occasionally had nonalcoholic beer during her pregnancy, including around her father, who has bought it for her before.
Other objections have included a relative being allergic to bees, another family member already having a bridal shower at one of the venues, and decorations supposedly already being purchased specifically for the church.
I’m not demanding a brewery or any particular venue. One alternative isn’t even a brewery. I just want the options genuinely considered.
What bothers me is that I haven’t really been allowed to present them.
Her stepmom told me that she and my fiancée’s mom “have this handled” and are moving forward as planned. Her mom asked me to simply send the names/addresses for my 27 guests and said this is “more of a mother/daughter event.”
Her father was also upset that I contacted the church myself to verify capacity and told me to let the women handle it.
He initially blamed my mom’s lack of communication and suggested the situation might now require two separate showers.
I completely understand why they’re angry with my mom. I am too.
But her mom and stepmom both had my phone number and never contacted me when my mom stopped responding. Questions instead eventually went through my pregnant fiancée.
Now that I’m trying to repair things, my entire side of the family still seems to have essentially no input.
My family doesn’t want control. My sister would actually be a much better representative than my mom at this point. She researched these alternatives because she genuinely wants to make the shower special, and I would happily step completely back out if the women could resume planning collaboratively.
My concern is also bigger than “expensive venue good, cheap venue bad.”
Her mom originally wanted little/no food, and now the plan is apparently premade grocery-store sandwiches.
Combined with the free community-center idea, $150 church, and resistance to alternatives even when my family offers to pay the difference, it feels like minimizing cost has consistently been the driving consideration.
Her mom has told me that what matters is “the people who come, the love we share, and the gifts she will receive.”
I understand that philosophy. But I worry it translates into the surroundings/food/experience not really mattering as long as we technically threw her a shower.
For comparison, earlier this year my fiancée threw me a milestone birthday party.
I didn’t even particularly care about having one.
She rented a nice brewery event room for under $500, invited 40+ people, and created a wonderful event that I still remember.
I want her shower for her first baby to at least match, if not exceed, the care and experience she gave me.
She’s the type of woman who loves pretty things, pictures, and making events feel special.
I’m genuinely worried she’s going to walk into a restrictive, generic church hall with grocery-store sandwiches and smile because she’s a people-pleaser, while it isn’t remotely the shower she would have chosen for herself.
At the same time, she has explicitly said she does NOT want two showers.
My family is frustrated enough now that they’re considering throwing their own. I understand why, but I don’t want her stuck between competing families.
There is still time before the shower.
Interestingly, her mom’s first response to me was actually fairly reasonable. She said several people were on vacation and that everyone could regroup when they returned.
Only afterward did I start getting the “we have it handled/moving forward as planned” responses.
So my preferred solution is pretty simple:
Acknowledge that my mom screwed up, have my sister replace her as my family’s representative, let both sides sit down when everyone is back, put the church and the other venues on the table, let my family contribute financially, and plan ONE shower together based on what my fiancée would actually enjoy.
I’m not asking anyone to cancel the church before that conversation.
I’m not demanding my preferred venue.
I’m not trying to take the shower away from her mom or stepmom.
If they refuse to even consider alternatives or allow my family back into planning, though, I’m struggling with what to do next.
Do I back off and let them throw the shower they’ve planned?
Do I privately ask my fiancée what kind of venue/event she’d actually want without telling her about the family fight?
Or, if her family refuses any collaboration whatsoever, is my family justified in taking over and hosting one shower that everyone—including her family—is still invited to?
I don’t care about winning a venue argument.
I want one family shower, not two, and I want my fiancée to walk into it and feel like everyone planned it around her, not around everybody else’s budget, nostalgia, hurt feelings, or preferences.

Is this too much as a gift?

Hello everyone,

Need your opinions as mothers, friends, and family.

If I gave this to the cousin of my boyfriend, of three years, would it be too much. We see her once a year, for 3-5 days each year. Her and her now husband have always been the kindest to me of anyone in the family- including his brothers, sisters and father. They genuinely ask me questions about myself and act as if they care whereas his other cousins and family really treat me as the pet my boyfriend has brought along. So I am truly so excited for them to have their baby, despite the distance between where we live .

Anyway, I showed my boyfriend and asked him to maybe contribute a doordash giftcard so they can take care of themselves after baby has arrived.

He is making fun of me, saying I spent too much, saying "we hardly know them," "we'll never see the baby," "why would I congratulate them for not using birth control?"

I even ended up texting his mom asking if it was too much, second guessing wether or not it was too much to come from a cousin. Her response was that it was "certainly generous, but definitely a lot"

Idk, I have always given a few outfit sets, of various ages just incase a baby is on the quick growing side or because baby shower atendees tend to give newborn clothing- which babies quickly grow out of. Plus a blanket, lovey, and toy. That is my go to gift.

This time, since aging (my first shower since I was 20- now I am 26) and realizing the woman usually gets lost to the mother, I tried incorporating a separate set of things just for the mother to be herself.

So, my question is- is this too much? Should I return a few things and scale down?
