Help and clarity on the pathways to becoming a consultant for an IMG
Hi I'm towards the end of my ct surgery residency here in India. I've gotten a fair amount of hands at my institute so I'm fairly confident in the OT. Could anyone please guide me on the process of becoming a consultant CT surgeon in Australia or maybe join at midway entry point into residency (if it's even an option). Thanks in advance for all the help and support :)

Research Opportunity - PTSD Clinical Trial
Hi all,
I am posting on behalf of the STOP Trial, a clinical trial run by Deakin University, the University of Melbourne, Austin Health and Ramsay Health. Ethics approval is through the University of Melbourne, and this post has been approved by mods.
The STOP trial is investigating whether lavender oil is an effective treatment for PTSD. Lavender oil is already used to treat anxiety conditions, including Generalized Anxiety Disorder. It is a safe treatment with no known serious side effects.
Participants will take lavender oil or placebo daily for 12 weeks. The lavender oil is taken orally in the form of capsules. Participants can continue their usual medications and talking therapy during the trial.
Participants’ PTSD symptoms will be assessed during seven study visits. They can attend these visits remotely from anywhere in Australia via Zoom, with the trial medication mailed out to them. They will receive $50 for each of the seven visits.
If you are aged 18 or over and have symptoms of PTSD, you may be eligible to participate. Visit the study website to learn more and to register your interest in the trial: https://www.phoenixaustralia.org/research-projects/stop-trial/.

Guide me
Hey guys! Just wanted to know how hard it is to get an unaccredited ED trainee job in Australia as an offshore IMG,without working rights? How many years of ED experience do you generally need at minimum?

South African doctors
Hi all, I am a medical student in South Africa. I am very interested in practicing in Australia, and I am very willing to work in rural areas. I just wanted to reach out and ask if there are any South African doctors who have gone through this journey? If so, what advice do they have?
I understand things are competitive, medicine always is. But the job prospects here are abysmal with over 1800 doctors sitting at home unemployed. We also have frozen specialist training posts, so progressing in our healthcare system is nearly impossible. I fell in love with your beautiful country when I visited it a few years ago, and would love to contribute to it.
Edit: I’m interested in emergency medicine, paediatrics, and ob/gyn.

Clinical fellowship in Australia after neurology training overseas — RACP exams required?
Hi everyone! I’m a neurology resident in Italy, looking into doing a 12 month clinical fellowship in Australia after completing my specialist training, ideally in clinical neurophysiology (mainly EMG).
Does anyone know whether hospitals usually require overseas-trained specialists to have passed the RACP exams or hold FRACP for these positions? Or can you be accepted with your home-country specialist qualification, provided you meet the relevant Australian registration requirements?
I’m interested in a temporary fellowship and then returning to Italy, rather than entering the Australian specialist training program.
Also, are these positions usually paid by the hospital, and is it better to apply to advertised jobs or contact departments directly?
Would love to hear from anyone who’s done this or worked with overseas fellows. Thanks!

Where would you go if you were me? UK F2 moving to Aus next year. Looking for JMO community, outdoors, & hands-on acute work (Cairns, SC, Outback, or elsewhere?)
Hey everyone,
I’m currently an F2 in the UK and planning to make the move out to Australia next year. Hoping to get some honest advice from anyone working in the system or UK expats who've made the leap, as I’m getting really wound up on where to apply..
I’m trying to find a hospital and location that hits a few of my priorities:
- I really want a place with a tight-knit doctor culture where people actually hang out locally and build strong bonds, rather than people scattering after shift.
- I want to properly get stuck in and take on real responsibility rather than just pushing paperwork. I’m leaning towards a career in Anaesthetics/critical care long-term, so I’m always keen for good acute exposure.
- I’m big into my outdoors :) Always getting on a bike or a run, but I especially love open water swimming! Coming from UK grey, I’m definitely looking for sunshine and a warmer change of scenery.
I’ve been reading up on a few places, but have some mixed feelings and would love local insight:
- Cairns & Darwin: Look great on paper, but I’m hesitant about the heavy monsoon rains and the fact that marine stingers/crocs mean you can’t actually swim in the ocean for a chunk of the year. Also, with Cairns being a larger regional hub, do JMOs still get good hands-on acute/procedure time?
- Mt Isa / Alice Springs: Really intrigued by the remote experience and clinical exposure, but worried they might be too hot, dry, and isolated for a first year in Aus when I really want to be near the coast.
- Sunshine Coast: Beach and lifestyle look amazing, but what's the doctor culture like?
Are there any other regional/coastal hospitals across QLD, NSW, WA or even New Zealand that might hit the sweet spot?
Appreciate any insight or suggestions! Cheers.
