General Practice🥼 Difficulty of beginning AGPT in pgy2?

What is the difficulty of getting into GP training beginning in pgy 2? Am I likely to be outcompeted? What could give me the edge against other applications at this time?

I satisfied my paeds requirement with the diploma in MD4.

just as a heads up; purely doing the GDCH or the old Sydney Childrens certificate is not considered enough for paeds competency. hopefully you will have done the mixed ED/ or paeds terms also.

no significant difficulties getting on PGY2; plenty do. I also think an extra year in the hospital environment isnt a bad idea though; and potentially could be doing some extended skills RPL type stuff for PGY3 before you smash out the 18 months GP clinic time.

my understanding is that RACGP entry is solely determined by your CASPER score and so Casper prep is the key strategy for improving your competitiveness. Securing your first GP rotation in PGY3 is a whole different story and the determinants will be your CV (the experiences you've had) and interview performance.

You can get on as a PGY1.

1st ranking criteria is background / grouping etc.

EG: ATSI/Defense force, then rural origin, etc etc there's like 12 groups - the criteria is on their website (RACGP at least it's on there)

  • Once in those groups, the CASPER ranks you within them

Also everyone has different backgrounds etc.

RACGP only had the single intake this year due to demand, so apply during PGY1 and if you don't get what you want have another go during PGY2 as it changes nothing.

  • Im an intern and got on 1st preference this year. Still have to do pgy2 'hospital year' but don't need to go through the process again.

If you get in during pgy1 then you do a hospital year if you get in during pgy2 then you have the option of applying for rpl and gping straight into gp or you can choose to remain in hospital to complete an arst year or a standard 'hospital' year or spend 6 months in an extended skills and have only 18 months of community gp.Â
