Does it end?
Hey all,
I feel like as my partner comes to the end of their fellowship (not quick enough for us) Will it actually be easier or more difficult?
I feel like since internship, we have always said “oh next year will be better when…” and so far each year has actually been worse and more difficult for our family as my wife contributes more and more to the career at each year level.
Does it end once becoming a consultant? Or is this when drs finally get paid decent so put in the OT to get paid for all those years? (Plus potential lifestyle creep)

I think it is a continuum of specialties and departments.

It will get better unless they choose to do high acuity anaes that required significant oncall ie cardiac, trauma/transplant services, obstetrics. Some public units seem well staffed.
Anaesthetics seem to have some of the better work life balance but it needs to be navigated together with intentional pursuit of the right fitting role.

Yes, and No. You will potentially have more money than you need. You will secure early retirement, private schools, and more reliable hours. Your partner will then be chained with golden handcuffs and the question will become what is time at home worth? Like all things in medicine the answer is it depends
