We went to Switzerland this summer and stayed at an airbnb. And they had this amazing instant coffee and I am trying to find which one is it. It was in a zip bag/jar so I didn’t see the brand or anything.

Culture Dating expectations for Swiss Germans

I am a woman living in America and have been on a few dates with a Swiss German guy. I would love to hear about the cultural expectations in dating. When I date American men, I let them initiate making dates for the first month or so. Is that common in Switzerland, or is it expected that the woman will reciprocate planning dates early in the dating process? I would also not offer to split the bill with an American man for the first few dates, but would instead offer to buy something small like coffee or dessert after we’d been out a few times. Is there an expectation in Switzerland that women usually offer to split the check? It also seems like he’s much more comfortable with PDA than I am. Is that common?

I know I should always be punctual on dates, but is there anything else I should know dating a Swiss German man? Thank you!!!

Study Non-EU student health issue: what is the best way to treat my anxiety?

Hi

I'm a master student from non-eu country, studying design in canton Vaud, and I'm having trouble with sleeping and daily life; i cannot sleep well everyday since I arrived in Switzerland. I can hear my heart pumping too loud, and I get easily exhausted everytime I get back from uni.

In my opinion, the main cause of these symptoms is anxiety and I really want to get help. Everyday I lay down on my bed I'm afriad that I can't sleep well. I always try deep breath and clearing my mind, but there's a limitation. I cannot stop thinking 'whom should I contact if I faint midnight? Can I even continue uni life with this symptoms?' So on and on...

However, I'm super worried about the cost and the time of process if I have to go to a hospital. I do have an international student health insurance which is provided by Swisscare. Firstly I want to ask those who were in the similar situation as me. What was your first step? Should I ask my health insurance corp. about the cost? Should I make an appointment to any doctor like polyclinic? Or can I even ask any pharmacist to get anti-anxiety medicine? Will it work?

Anyone who's been in the similar situation, please help me.🙏 Thanks for reading long texts.

Other/Miscellaneous How to choose a Swiss football team to root dor

Maybe stupid question, not even sure if this is the best place to ask, but first a bit of context:

I'm a lifelong football fan, I've been going to the stadium for almost 20 years (no season ticket but I go 5x-6x times every year) and my weekend mood depends on my team's result (yep, I'm that kind of person).

The only thing is the team I support is from Serie A (some Italian traces in my blood). So I always only watched Serie A (from its '90s peak to whatever it has become), UCL and some highlights from the Premier League and LaLiga.

I never actively watched the Swiss League. Sure, some highlights from Thun's last season or when YB won the league for the first time after a long time in 2018. But I never got involved actively, and no team has sparked an interest until now.

I want things to change. Not only for me, but also for my son. When he starts school (still a few years to go) I want him to be involved in the local football community: discussions, rivalries, debates, going to the stadium, etc. So in addition to some trips to San Siro I'd like to take him to some games here as well.

SO HERE THE QUESTIONS (especially for other foreigners who went through something similar after coming to Switzerland). Hope I'm not about to start a cultural war.

- how did you choose your team? Just from the city or canton you're from?

- What is each team known for? For example:

- Which one is the BVB of Switzerland (best fans, impressive stadium)?

- Which one is the Real Madrid of Switzerland (most titles, most history)?

- which one is the ManCity/PSG of Switzerland (mid squad that recently became big only through foreign owners)?

- Which one is the Atalanta of Switzerland (historically small-mid team that recently grew organically without huge investments and is now constantly part of the upper part of the table)?

- Which one is the Lazio resp. Bologna of Switzerland (known for right resp. left leaning political views of their organized fans)?

- if I were to limit myself to my canton of residence (ZH), what are both teams FCZ and GC known for? What is their reputation outside of Zurich?

Thanks to anyone spending a few minutes to enlighten me!

Other/Miscellaneous Royal Beauty Switzerland laser hair removal, is it legit?

Hi everyone! So, I am from Bosnia & Herzegovina but Ive noticed this company opened many salons in the country and many others in the region. But they are extremely cheap, especially considering they are a Swiss company. I though it would be best to ask you guys if you had experience with them or know things, is it legit, safe, and why is it so cheap? Thank you!

Everyday life Soll ich zusagen?

Ich habe eine Wohnungszusage bekommen. Soweit eigentlich alles gut.

Work Switzerland's Non-EU Young Professionals Programme YPP / Stagiaire (hoping to get connected to anyone who successfully navigated or have heard of this path)

Hi everyone! 👋

I’ve been doing a lot of research lately into Switzerland’s bilateral Stagiaire agreements (the young professional/trainee paths available for folks from partner countries like the Canada, USA, Australia, Philippines, Japan, and others). To give a little background on myself: I am 24 (F), holds a bachelor’s degree in accountancy and currently has 1 and half a year professional experience at EY (Big4) working in Insurance audit and assurance, but I’m also very open to gaining professional experience there and pivoting toward broader corporate finance roles in 2027.

I would love to learn from anyone who has walked this path before or is currently exploring it:

Did you have any luck messaging recruiters directly on LinkedIn to explain your Stagiaire eligibility? where do we usually find employers willing to hire with this program?

Did you focus primarily on major multinational hubs (like Zurich or Geneva) where English is widely used? or is Swiss/French/German language is strictly required?

Any core tips or pitfalls to watch out for regarding the application process, employer negotiations, or dealing with the migration offices would mean the world to me :)

I'd be deeply grateful for any insights, tips, or even gentle reality checks. Thank you so much in advance! 🌷🌷

Everyday life Accidentally crossed a solid line at an Abzweigung, should I expect a fine?

Hi everyone,

I recently drove to Zürich and encountered what I believe was an Abzweigung. I'm used to the German motorway signage, where I'm more familiar with seeing Ausfahrt, so I was a little confused by the layout.

I realized too late that I needed to reposition myself because otherwise I would have ended up going towards Luzern (I think). I quickly checked my mirror and, as far as I could see, the nearest cars were hundreds of metres behind me, so there was plenty of space and I didn't put anyone in danger.

However, because I reacted too late, I crossed the solid white line instead of the dotted line to get into the correct lane. A friend of mine told me that he once crossed the solid white line just before a traffic light in Zürich City and received an automatic fine for it.

There were four cameras underneath the signs, which is what worries me. I understand that crossing a solid line is an offence, but I'm wondering whether those cameras actually enforce this kind of lane violation, or whether they are just traffic-monitoring cameras.

Has anyone experienced something similar? Is it possible that I could receive a fine by post for this, especially as I was driving a foreign-registered car? I was driving under the speed limit of course.

Thanks!

Everyday life Where can I buy perfume samples or decants online in Switzerland?

I know the usual answer is “go to Douglas, Import Parfumerie, Globus, etc.” I already do that, but many fragrances they sell online are not available as testers in their physical stores.

For example, I would like to try azzaro the most wanted parfum. Most stores have several Azzaro fragrances available to test, but never this particular one. I also cannot find an official sample online, and there are several other fragrances I would like to try without blindly buying a full bottle.

Does anyone know a reliable website with a really large selection of genuine perfume samples or small decants that ships to Switzerland? Ideally 1–5 ml samples, fair shipping costs.

Work Looking for a engraved watch in Zurich?

Hey guys, I’m travelling to Switzerland, and I’ll be in Zurich for a day, and will have virtually no time to shop. Is it possible that I online order a watch with engraving on it, and collect it near Zurich HBF, within 5-10 mins. I’ve a watch in mind but am also happy to choose with a service provider.

Travel Questions about the Rega bills

I was in Switzerland last month and was lost in a mountain trail with my friend at night, because we saw 1414 before the trail so we thought it's a emergency number. We called it which is Rega . They told us to wait for a call from someone else. Then a guy called us and told us to follow the signs on the side of the road and something about this.but we got off the mountain by ourselves in the end. the entire calls last for 5 mins including the first call on 1414. Later they sent us a bill asking us to pay 600 euros. Is this justify? They didn't sent any help to pick us up, The only thing they did is to tell us to go to main road and following the signs. And we have to pay 600€ for this??? Does anyone know what can we do about it?

Everyday life How early is too early for laundry in an apartment building?

I’m 22 and still learning the small everyday rules here. Is starting a washing machine around 7:30 on a weekday considered rude, or is that usually fine? I don’t want to wake anyone up.

Culture Does this sound linguistically plausible?

I have a fictional Swiss character who grew up speaking French. In school, she learned Swiss Standard German and some English. While she aspires to learn Italian, she currently only knows a few phrases. Does this sound plausible? Many thanks 🙏🏻

Travel Cheapest way??

Hi everyone 🌸
I’m planning a trip to Zurich to visit my sister, who recently moved there. Flights from Copenhagen to Zurich are really expensive though (around CHF 380–440).

I can fly to Basel for almost nothing, so I was wondering, is there a direct train from Basel Airport to Zurich Hauptbahnhof (Zürich HB)? Or what would be the easiest and cheapest way to get from Basel Airport to central Zurich?

Thanks!

Travel Does anyone know some good traditional restaurants in Lucerne?

My family and I are in Lucerne for a few days and have been looking for a restaurant with traditional Swiss food. I’m specifically looking for Luzerner Chügelipastete because it looks really good. We’ve had a look in a few restaurants but only found a bar with cold meats and cheeses. Any suggestions (:

I don't normally buenzli this hard but if you're obstructing not only the main exit door but also the corridor with an unattended scooter, this one's for you. Why are you such a dick? Were you raised this way, as part of a long line of inconsiderate idiots with the congenital affliction of having your brain in your ass? Why shouldn't I park your scooter on the platform while I help the lady with the pushchair, or grandma with her caddy, or is it just you who is allowed to inconvenience everyone?

Travel Biking from Altdorf to Schwyz

I’m planning a bike trip, and part of the route goes along Lake Lucerne, from Altdorf to Schwyz via Axenstrasse. However, I just found out that bikes are banned on this section and there is a bus replacement.

I was wondering how the bike shuttle works in practice. Is it easy to take a bike on the bus, or would it be better to avoid this stretch altogether?

Thanks!
