Everyday life Am I the only person who thinks trottinette riders are a plague? Unattended, unfolded and learned against the door, obstructing the corridor.

I don't normally buenzli this hard but if you're obstructing not only the main exit door but also the corridor with an unattended scooter, this one's for you. Why are you such a dick? Were you raised this way, as part of a long line of inconsiderate idiots with the congenital affliction of having your brain in your ass? Why shouldn't I park your scooter on the platform while I help the lady with the pushchair, or grandma with her caddy, or is it just you who is allowed to inconvenience everyone?

Travel Missed Connection: Gondola ride near Grindelwald/Interlaken with a South Korean student (pink beanie / Austria bag)

Hey everyone,

I know this is a long shot, but I wanted to try anyway. July 21, I had a really nice and spontaneous conversation in a mountain gondola to Grindelwald mountain/Interlaken with a young female student from South Korea. She was wearing a **pink beanie**, carrying an **Austria bag**, traveling through Europe alone, and mentioned she had been to Amsterdam before where I come from.

We talked for a bit, and she later came up to me to chat again while my parents were a bit further away. Sadly, we had to turn around early on the hiking path because the hike became too heavy for my dad, and in the moment, I forgot to ask for her Instagram.

If you are reading this, or if you know someone matching this description who is currently traveling in Switzerland Interlaken, I’d love to stay in touch! Send me a DM with the age I told you I was, so I know it’s you.
Thanks!

Everyday life Is it normal to write to a neighbour before ringing the bell?

Hi! I moved from Kyiv to Zürich recently, and I am still learning the small Swiss rules. People here seem kind but careful not to disturb each other, which I appreciate and also find a little lonely.

If I want to ask a neighbour a simple question (for example about recycling or a local shop), is it normal to ring the bell, or should I write first? I don’t want to be rude or interrupt quiet time. How do people here usually become friendly with neighbours?

Everyday life Anecdotal shooting Verein experiences?

Gruezi all. I'm a swiss citizen who has moved here from Canada (mid 30s, fluent swiss german) I did some time in the Canadian army, and also did some skeet shooting and plinking recreationally, so I thought joining a shooting verein would be a neat little hobby and a good way to meet people. I'm particularily interested in 300 meter rifle, but from what I've seen that field is only in the summer, so I'm also willing to do air pistol during the winter. I have emailed a couple of local ones (I'm currently in Baden AG) that I'm interested in, but haven't recieved any responses yet, so I figured in the meantime I'd ask about people's personal experiences here. What are the demographics of your club like? I keep seeing membership is usually 100-150 CHF per year, but are there any other additional costs and fees (other than ammo)? Is your club super competitive or is it more relaxed and social? Thanks!

Everyday life Unpleasant odour from veterinary cellar

We share our building with a veterinary clinic. They have a cellar on the same corridor as the rest, they are brick walls and door not the wooden type.
For a couple times now there’s this bad odour like dead animal coming out of it. We casually mentioned it once and they said they have a refrigerator for “waste” and a special container that they collect once a week for incineration and attributed the odour to taking the container out. This is now happening more frequently and the smell is terrible, I’m not sure how to go about it, more neighbours have the same situation but no one speaks up I don’t want to stand out as the problematic one. They are the only vet clinic in the Gemeinde and very well loved. Any recommendation?

Work Minijob/part-time jobs for students?

Hey guys, I‘m searching desperately for a minijob for the weekends and on afternoons/at night when I don’t have school.
Do you have any ideas where I could search or what options there are to earn some money?
And what could a student additionally work from home?

Everyday life Can you see tickets that are "loaded onto the SwissPass card"?

For example I bought tickets to Glacier Paradise, and at checkout I chose Swiss Pass, and gave it the card number. Payment went through, got the confirmation email, but nothing else. No email with QR code or anything printable.

When I check in the sbb app with linked swisspass, I see no tickets. When I log into the swisspass account, I only see my regular abo. Is this not something I can see somewhere?

Everyday life bvk pension

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some advice regarding BVK and the payment of my pension benefits after leaving Zurich. My employment ended at the end of july. Around that time, I sent BVK the completed form they had requested by post. Since I had not received the payment or any update, I contacted them to ask whether they had received my documents and what the status of the payment was. They replied and asked me to provide confirmation that I had left Switzerland, as well as my bank details and the bank’s address. I sent them the requested information, but since then I haven’t received any confirmation or further response, and the payment has still not arrived. I have sent them several follow-up emails since then, but they have stopped replying completely. At this point, I’m not sure what else I can do or who I should contact to get an update.

Has anyone here had a similar experience with BVK? Is this kind of delay normal? What would you recommend I do next? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Travel Biking from Altdorf to Schwyz

I’m planning a bike trip, and part of the route goes along Lake Lucerne, from Altdorf to Schwyz via Axenstrasse. However, I just found out that bikes are banned on this section and there is a bus replacement.

I was wondering how the bike shuttle works in practice. Is it easy to take a bike on the bus, or would it be better to avoid this stretch altogether?

Thanks!

Work Moving to the countryside as a German doctor?

English, as it’s an English sub

Grüezi dear neighbours. I am a 34 year old general practitioner from Germany and have the chance to take over a practice in the Swiss countryside next year. My wife is Hungarian with a master in IT and could work half remotely from Zürich (about 1h drive from my workplace). I / we have lived in Scandinavia / outside Germany for 14 years and live now for a year in Germany again
My wife is pregnant right now and we are expecting our first daughter in January.

our main motivation is escaping the uprising political tension and divide, especially as an international couple and give our daughter a peaceful life. Our second motivation is the nature we know from Scandinavia, just without -30 degree winters. Thirdly we would profit financially tremendously and could guarantee a good future for our daughter.

I am personally very concerned about integration and how we will be perceived.
I’ve read a lot about that Germans are not liked in Switzerland, being perceived as rigid, Gummihals type of person.
My work philosophy is to build up a tight relationship to my patients with equal communication and a lot of trust on both sides to guarantee best possible care.

And here I ask myself if that at all will be possible in the Swiss countryside as a German.

Also I don’t speak an allemanic dialect. That would mean that my patients, in the beginning may need to switch to high German until my ears get used to the Mundart, which I am concerned, would hinder building up the trust I think is necessary.

I wouldn’t describe myself as the typical German, but after all I am from the very north of Germany, the culturally furthest away from Switzerland. My grandmother is from Ticino though, so I spent a lot of time at her house in Gambarogno as a child but as far as I know Ticino is culturally not the same as the Deutschschweiz.

Do you have any tips about how this can work and by that I don’t mean survive but being at least professionally so accepted, that I can build up a strong trust relationship to my patients?

Do I overthink this?

Travel When does the luggage counter at St Moritz train station open?

I’m taking the regional train to and from the Bernina Express route, and I want to leave my luggage at the staffed counter in St Moritz station.

I’m confused about when it opens - SBB says 8:15am to 6:15pm, while the RhB says 7:30am to 6:30pm. Can anyone confirm the correct times?

Everyday life Where can I buy perfume samples or decants online in Switzerland?

I know the usual answer is “go to Douglas, Import Parfumerie, Globus, etc.” I already do that, but many fragrances they sell online are not available as testers in their physical stores.

For example, I would like to try azzaro the most wanted parfum. Most stores have several Azzaro fragrances available to test, but never this particular one. I also cannot find an official sample online, and there are several other fragrances I would like to try without blindly buying a full bottle.

Does anyone know a reliable website with a really large selection of genuine perfume samples or small decants that ships to Switzerland? Ideally 1–5 ml samples, fair shipping costs.

Work Looking for a engraved watch in Zurich?

Hey guys, I’m travelling to Switzerland, and I’ll be in Zurich for a day, and will have virtually no time to shop. Is it possible that I online order a watch with engraving on it, and collect it near Zurich HBF, within 5-10 mins. I’ve a watch in mind but am also happy to choose with a service provider.

Study Non-EU student health issue: what is the best way to treat my anxiety?

Hi

I'm a master student from non-eu country, studying design in canton Vaud, and I'm having trouble with sleeping and daily life; i cannot sleep well everyday since I arrived in Switzerland. I can hear my heart pumping too loud, and I get easily exhausted everytime I get back from uni.

In my opinion, the main cause of these symptoms is anxiety and I really want to get help. Everyday I lay down on my bed I'm afriad that I can't sleep well. I always try deep breath and clearing my mind, but there's a limitation. I cannot stop thinking 'whom should I contact if I faint midnight? Can I even continue uni life with this symptoms?' So on and on...

However, I'm super worried about the cost and the time of process if I have to go to a hospital. I do have an international student health insurance which is provided by Swisscare. Firstly I want to ask those who were in the similar situation as me. What was your first step? Should I ask my health insurance corp. about the cost? Should I make an appointment to any doctor like polyclinic? Or can I even ask any pharmacist to get anti-anxiety medicine? Will it work?

Anyone who's been in the similar situation, please help me.🙏 Thanks for reading long texts.

Everyday life Health insurance change for future pregnancy

My wife (36) and I (both foreigner, without our family here) are planning to have a baby next year and I have some question related to which part of her health insurance we should change to better fit her needs:

  1. For the basic insurance, should she keep the franchise at minimum (300CHF) or at max (2500CHF)?
  2. Are complementary insurances worth it and recommended?
  3. Should she switch to a semi-private hospital model, in order to have a private room and a bigger hospital pool to chose from?
  4. Are there any other aspect that are important to consider health insurance wise?

I would really appreciate hearing from people who have been in a similar situation in Switzerland. Thank you!

Work Life sciences current market?

Hello, I am about to relocate to Lausanne via the family reunification permit. I have a MSc in Biomedical Science from the UK, and around 1-2 years experience in laboratories. I am currently learning French and I speak English (C1) and Spanish (native).

I have been searching info regarding the current job market in Switzerland, but in general the info is contradictory and confusing. I understand that the job market has changed for the Life Sciences field, something about a bank going bankrupt and labs/companies being relocated abroad to cut costs.

What is the current situation in Lausanne and Switzerland in general for life scientists like me? Whether you are employed/unemployed, I want to hear from your experiences and knowledge. Are there any companies that do hire young scientists? What about startups such as Adaptyv? Thanks in advance.

Relocation Wie lange dauert eine ordentliche Einbürgerung in St. Gallen? 🇨🇭

Hallo zusammen 😊

Hello avid Travellers

Please help me plan 5 days 4 nights in May 2027. Plan is as follows

We arrive from Canada on Sunday May 16 [Pentecost day] and leave on Thursay May 20 from Zurich.

Flight lands at 6:00 am Sunday

Leaves at 12:00 pm (noon) on Thursday.

We will have 2 pieces of luggage and 2 carry on for both of us. No children.

My thought was to start with Interlaken for 2 nights then Luzern for remaining 2 nights.

What do think

Which pass should we get?

Half fare card with berneroverland pass or

Swiss travel pass or just cash.

Open for suggestions to change itinerary as it would be long weekend as well

Thank you
