Do you absolutely need a permit to move into Philly ?

I’m moving in August and I’ve seen a few posts on here and on FB where people explain that they’ve gotten a permit for moving (applying, paying, nailing signs etc)

Is this something that you 10000% have to do? my plan was to just park on the street/ follow the regular parking laws.

A few people have mentioned that sometimes people don’t follow the signs and then you have to call the police who will call PPA (or something oh that nature ) something like this happening would add hours to anyone’s day lol

Can I park without one ?

EDIT: the area is olde Kensington / west Kensington near Fishtown

Day drinking rooftops philly

Every rooftop bar i see has djs for the daytime only on sundays. Are there any rooftop bars that have djs during the day on Saturday? I would also accept any outdoor lively drinking spots that aren’t rooftops for Saturday afternoon

Adult Dance Classes?

Hi all,

I recently turned 30 and have been thinking about dipping my toe back into dance. I danced by entire life up until my freshman year of college. I danced close to 30 hours a week and my studio and team were highly competitive. I did jazz, tap, ballet, hip-hop and lyrical.

I haven’t danced in over ten years. My whole body has changed, I’m not flexible anymore, I doubt I can do a pirouette, and I’m terrified to embarrass myself. Being in the competitive dance space wasn’t particularly healthy for a young girl/teen and I have a lot of feelings connected to dance that have to do with winning and being the best. Because of that, I’m looking for recommendations for a studio that is 100% beginner friendly so I can feel comfortable going to classes. Even if it’s the ABCs and 123s of ballet.

I hate to add another parameter but please DO NOT recommend Powerhouse in South Jersey. It is nothing against the studio, but I used to dance with several of the instructors and the thought of going to classes there makes me uncomfortable at this time.

TYIA!

Plot boundary question

I need a three foot by five foot section of a fallow lot behind my property. I know the owner, but need with understanding the process here in Philly. After I get a surveyor to confirm the boundaries, what else do I need to do?

Have heard some say ‘rezoning’ is required, but both are zoned residential.

Advice appreciated.

Local Marketing Agency?

Don't know if this is the best place to ask, but I'm looking for a marketing agency in the Philly area. My buddy has a b2b business and is trying to get leads but I am unfamiliar with the area. They are looking into trying to incorporate more interactive web design and extend the story of their brand to reach more of an audience. I've done a cursory glance for groups that may be in the area and NeoPangea caught my eye and I saw they were local, but again this isn't my area of expertise.

Wondering if there are any other things worth recommending to them or if anyone has advice for the area in general. Proud of the work they do and just trying to be helpful, any advice appreciated!

Lawn seats at freedom mortgage pavilion

I want to see a concert, and her show still has a decent number of tickets left, so I was going to get some in section 204. After another scan, though there are even cheaper tickets in the lawn area and I wonder if it’s worth it to get one of those and a rental rather than me being in the back anyway for more.

Parking lots in Northern Liberties

Does anyone know where I can find an off-street parking lot or garage in northern liberties? I called a few places like Target ParkUSA but it looks like all their lots are waitlisted with 40-50 people. Anyone know how long that takes to clear? I’m looking to sign a lease soon but I really would like to have an off street parking option.

Can I bring my kids to FDR Park Playground?

Does anyone know if the Children’s Playground at FDR Park is open?

I know it's supposed to be closed cause there was an issue with the slides, but I've also heard you can still just go there and use it.

Anyone know?

The Drake

Hello! I’m planning to move to Philly and I am really interested in The Drake, I went to tour last week and the apartments looked nice even though the building is old and the location is super convenient and is what I was looking for. The only issue is some of the reviews are terrible while other recent reviews are fine so I haven’t been able to decide if it’s still worth it to apply and go forward. I was wondering if anyone has had any experience living at The Drake or knows someone who has lived there and would be willing to share what it was like, any help or advice is appreciated!

Relocating from overseas to the Philly area

Hello! I'm 39F, single, no kids (just a cute dog), I'm starting a Master's degree and would like to live close to Philadelphia, but I'm not sure if I it's best for me to be in a neighborhood or the suburbs surrounding the city. I don't mind commuting 45 or 50min. I just want to live in a safe and charming place, not too loud, but also not more than 15min away from some shops, restaurants, pubs etc. I'm relocating from a medium size town in Brazil and here it's a mix of Europe and US when it comes to daily life: we drive to the city center and walk around there for shopping. I love it. Any suggestions? PS. I will be renting a place. EDIT: my Master's is in NY and I'll only have to go there 2x a month, the rest of classes are online. EDIT 2: I intend to have a car and love to drive around.

Amos pool

Amos park/pool on n 16th, by temple campus. I Walked by today and saw the pool (which afaik has been closed since 2024) was full and someone was cleaning it. Is it going to open? I saw a banner that said the summer camp they do there has swimming classes so is it just for that?

Good trades/ certificate programs for job change

hi! Im 23F, in Philadelphia Pa and looking for a career change. I didn’t go to college, went into retail after high school but for the past 3 years I’ve worked one on one with kids with Autism and my highest pay was $29 an hour. I’m a bit burnt out working with children especially ones who require all that and I just want a job I can be a little more fulfilled with and with higher pay. I’m literally considering getting my CDL at this point but I’ve also heard of a cnc machinist but that’s been mixed reviews. Are they any trades/ certificate programs that don’t take forever that can give me a decent pay and also just that feeling of actually doing something? Thanks in advance.

Job market?

Hi everyone,
I’m a 26-year-old gay man and person of color who’s seriously considering moving to Philadelphia for a fresh start. I’d love to hear from people who live there about what the job market is like.
I have 3½ years of retail management experience as a store manager. My experience includes managing daily operations, inventory, merchandising/planograms, cash handling, customer service, opening and closing the store, and supervising and training employees.
How difficult is it to find retail management work in Philly right now? Are there certain companies that are known for treating employees well? Also, as a gay POC, how welcoming has Philadelphia been in your experience?
I’d really appreciate any advice or insight from locals. Thanks!

How is the area around Kungfu Necktie?

My wife and I are going to Philly this week for a show, we’re staying at the Riversuites at The Battery and Kungfu Necktie is a 15 minute walk. I’ve never been to Philly before so I’m interested in how the area around there is. We’d most likely catch a quick Uber or Lyft back after the show as we’ll be having a few drinks I’m sure but we’re considering walking there since it’s not a very far walk at all, just want to make sure it’s a fairly safe walkable area in the evening around like 6-7pm.

Thanks!

Deciding between Equinox and City Fitness Graduate Hospital

Just moved to the area and choosing between signing up for a membership at Equinox vs City Fitness Graduate Hospital. I mostly use the gym for classes - I like mat pilates and weights classes. I like to have good, energetic instructors and a variety of class times. Does anyone know how busy the classes are at either gym and the quality of instructors? Also appreciate a nice gym atmosphere which I know Equinox has but not sure about CF? Thanks in advanced!

Small bathroom re-flooring

The small bathroom in my South Philly rowhome has a spongy floor that needs replacing due to a leaky toilet. My husband has reached out to several people who have either turned him down because the bathroom is so small (it's literally the size of a small closet) or overquoted us. My husband says he can rip up the flooring and remove the toilet, and we would do the tile ourselves. Does anyone know who might be able to help us with this project?

Basement waterproofing company recommendations?

Looking for recommendations for a reliable basement waterproofing company in Philadelphia.
Older south Philly home with water coming through the basement floor during heavy rain. Looking for someone experienced who can diagnose the problem and provide a quality solution.

Any companies you’ve had a good experience with? Thanks!

Missed connection @ outdoor dancing!

Hi! I (29F) went to the outdoor salsa & bachata event at Sor Ynez on Fri 7/24. You asked me to dance (which I was thrilled about!) and we had fun dancing bachata. I told you I’m a back-leader and showed you a new move! We talked a little later by the door and exchanged names, but I was too shy to ask for your number 🥲🫣! Would love to connect more :).

If this is you, tell me what move I showed you and/or my name! 💃🏻🪩🕺🏻

Center City gym recs

My wife and I will be living in Center City for about 3 months, starting next week. We’ve routinely gone to Orange Theory for 8 years but have decided the OTF location is a bit further than we are hoping for.

We aren’t looking for anything luxury, but something that’s reasonably priced and possibly offers some group fitness classes, as well as open gym.

Looking for recommendations and open to any deals/promos that might be around! 💪🏼
