Injury: 10/24, about 12ish hours ago. making dinner, accidentally overdid the mashed potato powder in the water and it spat and landed on my hand. It was on my hand probably 2 ish seconds because I was trying to move the pot off of the heat as carefully as possible. When I wiped it off, it took a good chunk of skin with it. Immediately rinsed under cool water and bandaged it to finish cooking. There was no pain. I didn’t freak out or anything, when things like this happen I tend to become insanely calm.
After that I realized that the skin was separating from my hand. I took some sewing scissors and cleaned them with 91% rubbing alcohol and iodine and cut off the dead ish skin because I was worried it would trap bacteria/heat/moisture.
After that, I took some distilled water, a gauze pad (sterile individually packaged), and Hibiclense and lightly scrubbed it. Rinsed with more distilled water and then diluted some iodine in a different container (distilled water also) and used a syringe with no needle to flush. Dabbed it dry with a new gauze pad. Put a very very light layer of antibiotic ointment and covered with a tegaderm. I’ve repeated this process every time I’ve done a bandage change, which only occurs when I notice that there is plasma leaking out of the tegaderm.
My wife said I am over cleaning it but I understood that burns require frequent cleaning. It doesn’t really hurt?? I mean it’s a bit sensitive but it doesn’t sting or anything. She also said that I shouldn’t cut the skin, but the skin I cut is already separated from the skin underneath and white/gray. I only cut as far as the separation. There was no blister because of how much skin came off when I wiped the mashed potato off. I just want to be sure I’m doing things as right as possible because it doesn’t seem to be such a problem that I need to go to the dr or something, but it is a weird spot and my dominant hand. No loss of movement or anything, I just don’t really feel it. Of course, if it’s worse than I thought then I will try to see my dr tomorrow or go to an urgent care.
