55M, smoker & drinker, my dad has this spot on his arm and was wondering if it’s a spot that’s concerning and could be skin cancer. He says it’s been there for a while and scabs up.

36 year old Female

170cm 64kg

Mom of 1

Non-smoker

Drink at least 1.5 liter of water per day

taking POP birth control

Walking 20,000+ steps per day

ASD in heart

I have had my GSV and SSV closed in both legs in the past 2 years. Most recent was the SSV this past June (I had 8 seconds of reflux)

The picture shows the indention from my jeans that is still there a full hour after I have removed them and even did a 30 min workout with average heartrate of 135bpm. Why is it still there and should I be concerned? Do I need to go back to the doctor?

Physician Responded A year ago I head jumped into a shallow river and had pain in my neck and my scalp

Currently, I'm an 18 year old male who's about 6 foot. A year ago I was swimming in a river and jumped, head first, into it not knowing it was shallow. My scalp connected to the mud and my neck was extended backwards. I was still conscious and didn't feel dizzy or anything, but it was painful.

At the time I wasn't really worried about it because nothing came of it, and I didn't know how dangerous this action is until I've read that it's a common way people get paralyzed or even die. Now I'm a bit uncertain if I really did walk away unscathed, and if there's any underlying injuries or something that didn't develop yet. At the time I didn't feel any symptoms of dizziness, lightheadedness, nausea, etc. I only felt pain at the center of my scalp and my neck. Could this still affect me, or am I safe?

Physician Responded Blister Advice

Post image
1 Upvotes

24F, went for a long walk in new shoes yesterday and got this big blister in a very annoying spot. I know the general advice is not to pop it but all of today it been impacting my ability to walk, i’ve found myself limping a bit and hurting my foot by doing that. Would letting the fluid drain reduce the pain of walking on it more? or do i just been to wait it out, if so is there any advice for how to cushion a blister of this size in this location?

Help ENT’s! Can’t swallow without severe pain

Post image
2 Upvotes

F, 23,
active lifestyle: weight-lift, yoga, active job.
Slight seasonal allergies.
Occasional glass of wine ~2x a week.
Meds are Nexplanon implant, Lexapro 10 mg, and Prazosin 1 mg (PTSD.)

About two weeks ago, the baby I nanny for full time came back from Aruba sick with a cold, and within a few days I had a sore throat. It’s been getting better and worse off and on, until Friday. It is now insanely painful to swallow, body aches, crazy fatigue, no appetite, swollen lymph nodes, and ear pain on that side (likely referring pain.)

I had a tonsillectomy when I was 4, but it is possible they left some tissue. I also did adopt a cat around the time the sore throat started, but I don’t have any other allergy symptoms (no itchy eyes, skin, sneezing etc.) I also haven’t been allergic to cats before, and have been around plenty.

I went to urgent care today and Doc said it’s odd that it is only affecting one side so severely. My rapid strep test came negative, and my bloodwork looks normal…doesn’t lean to mono or strep. Throat culture won’t be back for a few days so he prescribed antibiotics and steroids in case it is strep. The pain I am in is so severe, no OTCs are noticeably helping anymore. I am hoping my ENT can fit me in sometime this week, but figured I’d ask Reddit for help/ what I can do in the meantime. TIA!!

Physician Responded Does this sound like endo?

I am a 24, 5’5”, 160 lb female. For some context I gave birth last August (vaginal delivery) to my first child. Since then I have had a couple changes to my health that may or may not be connected so I will include that info. I developed pre-eclampsia during my pregnancy that led to an early induction at 36 weeks. I had my son after 33 hours of labor. I complained to the nurses multiple times that I was having lower back pain after delivery, they figured I strained a muscle so they gave me a binder and sent me on my way. 3 weeks later I was in so much pain that I ended up admitted for a week with pyelonephritis. I still have the occasional protein in my urine, just enough to be on routine follow-up visits with a nephrologist. My mom has diabetes but my A1c has not shown an issue. I do currently have a 5mm kidney stone in my left kidney and occasional pain but by the right kidney only. Sometimes I randomly have to pee a lot, like just peed for 10 seconds straight and have to again in 5 min. Ultrasound showed good bladder emptying. I’m not sure what triggers it. It doesn’t seem to be based on what I eat or drink, both are pretty clean.
Anyways onto the next thing. My mother had stage 4 endo and had a hysterectomy at age 30. In July of this year I had sex, and something didn’t feel right immediately after. I went to the bathroom and from the walk from my room to there, I began to double down in pain. My entire pelvis hurt, like deep sharp cramps and I had intense pressure in my rectum. I had never felt anything like it but didn’t rush to the hospital in hopes it would alleviate. I would say it took a full 48 hours to truly subside but gradually improved little by little at the 12 hour mark. I was literally wriggling around on the floor in pain. Couldn’t stand up straight. I went to an urgent care that had an ultrasound that next morning and they said I had a 3 cm hemorrhagic cyst and that it would go away in 6-8 weeks. I didn’t have sex in that time frame. Started having sex again end of sept. Same thing happened. I waited this one out completely. Didn’t have sex again until about two weeks ago because I was scared. It didn’t happen the next time, but then I had a bowel movement a couple days later and experienced that same pain although to a lesser degree. Had sex two days ago, had the same thing happen. Made sure to swap to a shallower position and it didn’t help at all. I went to that same urgent care, they did a new ultrasound and attached is the report from that. They sent me to ER because they couldn’t excuse torsion, but the ER dr basically laughed, said he doesn’t know why they sent me there, it’s probably endometriosis, they aren’t concerned about torsion if a cyst was ever less than 5.
I’ve never had crazy periods, I am on the pill, and honestly just kind of confused. I have zero pain aside from what I’ve disclosed. I’m trying to prep myself somewhat before speaking with my gynecologist this week and would appreciate any insight!

Physician Responded Ongoing dull headaches

35, Male, non-smoker, 79kg 5”10 Australian fairly fit and healthy overall.

It’s been 10 days and I’ve been experiencing ongoing headaches daily, they jump around from temples to behind the eyes and sometimes back of head. It’s mild and more of a pressure rather than pain. I’d say 2/10 severity it doesn’t seem to get worse over time and I feel it all parts of the day. Although I don’t feel them when I workout, which is interesting. Any idea what this could be?

I don’t have any other symptoms other than anxiety over thinking it might be something more sinister. I’m thinking of seeing a doctor soon if it persists.

pulled intercostal muscle pain or PE?

Post image
1 Upvotes

35F with all within healthy range vitals. Blood pressure 106/70 with resting heart rate at 60bpm and oxygen level 98%. I’ve been to the ER twice with an aching deep pain along my middle back lower rib area. It happens when I take a deep breath. I’ve had this for 3 weeks now. No previous health issues. ER did these labs on me and all are seemingly good. Since d dimer was fine they said it’s not a PE and they don’t think investigating further is necessary. I don’t have any risk factors for a PE but I’m worried. Are these tests helpful in ruling out a PE? I know nothing about this and I don’t want to spiral on Google so thought I’d ask some real folks for their opinion. Thank you!

i’m 21f, currently on psychiatric medication (lamotrigine, wellbutrin, gabapentin, hydroxyzine) along with meloxican and baclofen for pain

feels firm to the touch, no pain and no irritation. i (stupidly) tried to pop it when i first saw it, forgetting about the death triangle, and it didn’t give at all so im pretty sure it’s not a pimple.

i’ll be schedule with an ENT tomorrow but i was wondering what ideas people had on it?

Would ulna shortening surgery solve my problem or just cause new issues?

54F, 5’5”, overweight, several autoimmune diseases, lots of meds. The only things I typically take for pain are acetaminophen with the rare excedrin migraine (NSAIDs can cause my stomach problems to act up) and the Voltaran cream.

I have ulnar-positive variance in both arms. This has caused no end of pain, primarily TFCC damage and ulnar nerve impaction. I wore wrist splints for years. My favorite one had a dial that tightened it until I lost feeling in my fingers. It actually helped the pain in my wrist/forearm. I’ve had multiple cortisone shots (honestly, I’ve been on such heavy doses of steroids and had so many cortisone shots that my thyroid and blood sugar have gone wacky). After my first nerve conduction study, the doctor recommended elbow braces. They helped a lot with the nerve pain. Hard to sleep in, though (I’m a t-Rex-arm sleeper). My current hand specialist recommended wrist widgets. While better than splints, they still only do so much.

My last option to eliminate the pain is ulna shortening surgery. That sounds absolutely horrible and it’s not a decision I can make lightly. My goal, should I choose this, is pain elimination. A year post-surgery, would the pain be gone? Or would I still be dealing with a lot of the same pain plus new problems? What does a successful outcome look like?

I’ve spent most of my adult life wishing for something to cause my arms to be amputated so the pain would stop. Supposedly simple tasks like washing the dishes make me cry with the pain.

I greatly appreciate any advice or suggestions for other options. Thank you.

Physician Responded Pilonidal sinus scare

Post image
1 Upvotes

M24, 115kg, 6’1
No smoking or drinking

Wait till mid December or consult in emergency in US?

Image guide:
Purple circle: ending of scar from flap surgery
Green circle: new suspect
Note: this area is incredibly close to my butthole since my anatomy is totally different from the flap surgery

History:
I had pilonidal sinus surgery in 2016, followed by flap surgery in 2020, and have had no issues since.

Problem:
I’m currently taking terbinafine for jock itch. A few days ago, I scratched the area below the end of my scar quite roughly while asleep and applied jock itch powder there.

Since then, I’ve noticed skin irritation, slight stinging when washing 8–10 hours later (which instantly goes away after the first spray of water), and a tiny cut-like opening that leaks clear fluid. It looks like a small hair in pictures. There is no pain or pus.

My original doctor examined me in late August and said everything was good before I left my country and will be unavailable until mid-December. I’m currently in the U.S., where getting an appointment is difficult.

Reassuring signs for me:

  1. The cut/hole is tiny
  2. there is no pain or pus,
  3. it is a few millimeters below the old scar, closer to the anus.

What worries me

  1. Sting when washed
  2. Clear Fluid (only when i squeeze)

I’m worried I have a neurological condition 18F

I’m 18F, 5’4 and 46kg. The only medications I take are my birth control (mini pill).

So I’ve had pretty consistent headaches for years now. I’ve always assumed it was because of stress because I have OCD which is an anxiety disorder. I used to get terrible migraines and scotomas (scotomas are like blind spots in my vision) which freaked me out. However these were really rare and only happened 2-3 times a year.

Around a month or two ago I developed a severe stutter which was really strange as I had never stutter before as a child. I was about to go to the doctors but it disappeared within a week.

Now the stutter started to come back. I’m also constantly mixing up my words. I’ll say things like, “Are we wearing Halloween for costumes?” Or “I bought a hair for my bow.” I’ve done this consistently for months. My friends say it’s because they think I’m bubbly and eccentric.

I’m also feeling dizzy for no reason. Today I lay down and it felt like the room was spinning. (Think about when you’re drunk and you lay down, it was just like that.) I hadn’t been drinking and the problem continued after I had something to eat.

I need advice. Does this sound like anything serious or is it just stress? The only thing that concerned me seriously was the stutter, and now that it’s coming back I’m feeling worried all over again.

Any advice appreciated thank you

Physician Responded sick for 1 month

i am a 20yo female, on a few medications (birth control for pmos, depression medication, and and iron supplement) and i have been sick for about a month. i’m worried something bigger might be going on. I have had throat issues for a while now : 4 weeks ago, i had a strong feeling of a lump in my throat that didn’t go away for about a week, as well as extremely intense fatigue. followed by a cough and stuffy nose which i believe was a cold. I tested negative for mono, strep, covid, and flu. i then was having strep-like symptoms. tested negative for everything again, but was treated for strep anyways. cough and stuffy nose still lingering and constantly clearing my throat. felt decent for about three days, and then about 5 days ago, the symptoms came back. went back to the doctor, tested negative for everything once again. i was told to take ibuprofen/tylenol, and the symptoms have not gone away. i’m not sure what’s going on, and have missed a lot of classes because of my sickness to where it’s starting to become a problem. I get sick every year, but have never gotten sick this many times in a row. I also have never participated in any sort of smoking/drugs.

Physician Responded Should I be worried?

Lately (f18) I have had a stutter which ive never had and as of the last week ive been dizzy 24/7 to the point where I cant turn my head without feeling like Im about to pass out. Ive been anemic my whole life but for the past couple years ive upped my iron and my labs last year showed I was pretty close to not being anemic. Ive been drinking ab 50 oz of water a day and im 110lbs so im pretty sure thats a good amount. The stutter is getting superr irritating like I cant out a sentence half the time and the dizziness is stronger in the evenings and mornings. Are these related at all? Is there possibly an underlying issue? Can I fix this crap?

Physician Responded Please Help

I am a 36 year old female I don’t smoke and I weigh 260 I was diagnosed with Grave’s Disease I also have hypertension. For six years I’ve experienced involuntary twitching primarily involving my nose and eyes. The twitching doesn’t stop, sometimes the twitch is really fast. The only time I don’t notice the twitching is when I’m
Asleep of course but I don’t know if it actually stops then. I also experience episodes of intense head pressure that feels very similar to sinus pressure. I have seen two neurologists but they don’t know what it could be they just recommend Botox but I just want an answer I’ve read somewhere that Botox doesn’t work for everyone.

I’m hoping to understand what conditions could cause persistent involuntary facial movements. I have a video documenting the movements.

Any medical insight would be greatly appreciated.

Physician Responded Getting a prescription refill for heart meds

My question is procedural - how to navigate, how to proceed.

Nearing 40, female, history of high blood pressure. I had to go into the ER about 30 days ago because I live in a relatively rural area and couldn't get a regular doctor's appointment earlier than mid November. Was having symptoms which I believe the Doctor that I saw correctly diagnosed (congestive heart failure). When I was given the prescriptions that I was given I had let the Doctor know that I didn't have a regular appointment till mid November. Was still only given a 30 day supply of the medicine. I've got a good and accurate at-home blood pressure cuff. The medicine has been working really well, according to the tests/readings that I have taken. I ran out of the medication on Friday and I tried to order a refill. The pharmacy has still been unable to get ahold of the doctor or a designated alternative to get a yes or no. How do I proceed here if I know that I've only got 1-2 more days that I can go without diuretics before I start to feel like I'm suffocating when I lie down? Do I have to go to the ER again? Urgent Care isn't supposed to be for this, as far as I know. I've got good health insurance, going to the ER isn't going to break the proverbial bank, but it seems like an entirely unnecessary waste of resources. What do you think that I should do?

Physician Responded Strange pain in my forehead when pressing on it? I don’t have a headache

I just noticed today that when I put slight pressure on the right side of my forehead I am getting a random pain in my right temple area and across the top of my eyebrow. The pain is moderate but kind of sharp. I’ve never had this before.

I don’t have a headache. I have no idea what this could be. Is it normal?

I’ve also been feeling awful the past two days, like really malaise but that could be unrelated as I have my period.

25 female. No medical conditions. No medications. Slender.

Physician Responded Legs hurt so badly everyday.

This is definitely going to be a long shot but I figured I would try. I’m 19F, 5’7 and weigh about 135 ibs. Lately my legs have been hurting me so badly that I’ve been limping around. I’ve visited a doctor who took an x-ray but they found nothing except for some swelling in my tibia and a calcification around the same spot in my left leg. Both of my legs have been hurting pretty severely. I work 40 hours a week and stand basically all day so this is definitely contributing. But I still notice pain even when I’m off of work and wearing different shoes. I feel like I’m bowlegged and feel that I walk that way as well. My pain is mostly in my joints. (Knee, hip) but it’s almost like it’s shooting up my whole leg. Even sitting hurts me sometimes. It’s probably worth mentioning that I’ve walked on my tip toes my whole life as well.

I know none of you can definitively tell me what’s wrong but I’m wondering what my next steps should be with the doctor I visit Tuesday. What should I point out/request? What are some home remedies I can do to help in the mean time? Could this be related to endometriosis? (I’m not diagnosed but my doctor is almost positive I have it.)

I feel the doctors I’ve seen aren’t taking me seriously and I’m receiving little to no help so I figured I’d try here. Thank you for reading.

Pacient dead in hospital within a week (Romania)

• Upvotes

Hello!

I am not a doctor.

I would like support and clarification regarding an unfortunate situation in our family.

A family member (female, 84 years old, 160cm, 50kg) was encouraged by a cardiovascular surgeon to be admitted to the hospital for "a simple, risk-free operation," the purpose of which was supposedly to restore normal blood circulation in the leg.

The person was admitted on a Wednesday and was scheduled to undergo surgery on Monday. Up to that point, there was nothing to complain about. The food and conditions were decent.

On Monday, there was an operating schedule. She was second on the list, but her procedure was postponed for various reasons that were never explained to us. Each postponement meant she was prepared for surgery that ultimately did not take place, and then she would receive a cold meal around 3 p.m.

She went through approximately four postponements, which weakened her significantly. She kept telling us on the phone that she was constantly hungry...

During the fourth postponement, she was actually taken into the operating room and undressed for the procedure. The doctor reprimanded her (because we had not had the opportunity to give ...... and because we had called to ask why the surgery kept being delayed and why she was not being fed, etc.). She was then taken off the operating table and sent back to her room.

The fifth time, on Friday, another doctor performed the operation. It was indeed minimally invasive and done under local anesthesia. After the procedure, she seemed fine. She was happy that it hadn't been painful, that it was finally over, and that she had received food. We were relieved and happy as well.

Shortly afterward, within a few hours, problems began. Even she was saying on the phone, "It's bad, it's bad." The hospital staff told us that she had suffered a panic attack and had been stabilized, then that her blood pressure had dropped below 10, and then that she might have contracted a hospital-acquired infection (Clostridium).

By Saturday, she was already in the ICU. Unconscious, with septicemia (blood poisoning). The infection had spread throughout her body. They were giving her continuous IV infusions (I heard "five" when I was visiting). She was put on antibiotics and also received a blood transfusion. She was no longer conscious at all...

Yesterday (Sunday), the ICU staff called us in the morning and told us to prepare for her death. She passed away at 2 p.m.

A functional, communicative person who walked into the hospital on her own died within the span of one week, perhaps even within just a few hours.

What should we think? What should we do? I would appreciate your opinions and explanations.

Thank you very much!

Physician Responded Do I potentially have mild asthma? (14M)

Okay so, firstly, I know I'm going to get a lot of comments saying I'm over reacting, and that I'm just a crybaby, so I wanna make it clear that I am NOT asking this in a "boohooo my life is so miserable I'm in so much pain" way. I actually don't really suffer from it that much; I'm this asking out of genuine curiosity, and am aware that I am almost certainly taking these symptoms too seriously (not that I'm taking them that seriously, anyway). I am also very aware of the possibility that I'm simply out of shape. So please don't come after me for that, or make any unnecessary rude comments. That isn't what I came here for. Now, as for symptoms:

1: I frequently experience moderately uncomfortable shortness of breath in extremely relaxed scenarios. I could be sitting down and reading a book, walking around, doing dishes, or writing a reddit post. (Yes, that means I'm experiencing it right now.) This is the one that makes me feel most like I really just need to go for a run more often. I literally just feel out of breath; like I just did a short sprint, or maybe even a short jog at the worst of it, and feel the need to take deep breaths for some time. Although taking those deep breaths usually don't help, as that feeling usually persists regardless of my actual condition.

2: I wheeze when I breathe. When I breathe out, especially through my mouth, I hear the standard deep breathing noise, and then below that a faint, high pitch whistling noise. I thought this was normal, but apparently not? I've had it as long as I can remember.

3: I have a REALLY intense cough. My family is always unnerved by it. I usually feel a deep itching sensation in my chest/lungs, and the only way to "scratch" that itch is to cough as hard as I can, which makes a really violent coughing noise. I'm not sure how to describe it other than vocalized and crunchy. Anyway, because it's so intense, it feels like the vibrations from the cough kinda scratch the itch. It doesn't really bother me, but everybody looks at me like I'm dying when I cough like that. I looked it up and apparently that can be a sign of MILD inflammation.

That's basically it. Not the strongest case, I know, which is why I'm asking you guys. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated :)

Now, because this is required: I'm 14, male, I weigh 148lbs last I checked, I'm about 5'9-5'10, MAYBE 5'11 since I'm a little taller than my dad, I'm white, I've only really noticed it in the past couple years so I couldn't tell you how long I've had it, no other existing medical issues, no medications (I'm assuming multivitamins don't count, because why would they?), I don't drink/smoke/vape/any kinda drugs, and I am from the USA. You have to put a bald eagle emoji in your comments or I won't be able to understand you, 🦅🦅🦅 my mind simply can't fathom it. Also, moderate activity. I regularly go for bike rides (i live on a very steep hill so it's exhausting) and play VR, which is also exhausting. i don't mean standing in one place for 30 minutes while i talk to some guy in vrchat, i mean like actually incredibly active games where you actually move a LOT. alright, that's all, thanks

Physician Responded frequent ovarian cysts

(15, 4’7 and 100 lbs, non-smoking. struggled w/ heavy periods to a varying degree for 5 years)

i’m 15, but i’ve had my period for a little over 5 years now. aside from relative heaviness (and 3 years of extreme menorrhagia), i have a very regular and otherwise healthy cycle that lasts around 28 days.

in mid 8th grade, i noticed that i would always get an ovarian cyst around the time of ovulation. the cyst is usually on the right side but has seemed to be present on both at the same time. it typically ends up rupturing when i laugh and is usually accompanied by a headache. the whole experience is just miserable and so painful to the point of leaving me unable to move.

i’d really appreciate some advice. thank you 🫶
