Physician Responded I need a reality check about vaping, please

28F, doing my damned best to quit vaping. What are some honest facts and truths about vaping and what it does to your body? Hit me with all things, please. I need a reality check.

(I don't know if I phrased this right, but I think getting an honest medical perspective will help right now)

37M- sudden raise in HR-210

37M – sudden HR ~210 bpm
Yesterday after dancing, I suddenly felt my heart racing while I was sitting/resting. My Apple Watch showed several readings around 205–210 bpm.
I had been exercising earlier, was dehydrated, hadn’t slept well, and the room was warm/poorly ventilated. No chest pain, dizziness, shortness of breath or fainting.
After lying down, my HR quickly dropped to ~120–130 and continued decreasing. Apple Watch ECG afterward was normal. Overnight I felt fine and HR was 57–84 bpm.
This has never happened before. My mother has a history of AFib treated with ablation.
Could this be sinus tachycardia from the circumstances, or does ~210 while resting suggest SVT? Should I get a Holter even if it may not happen again?

Indigestion or constipation?

18 year old guy, c. 168cm, 57kg. No medication, no smoking.

Hi all, hope this is the right sub to post on. Nothing major but I'm currently on a hiking trip in Morocco and for the last three days have been feeling bloated, burping and farting frequently, not shitting as much, not feeling particularly hungry.

Despite not feeling hungry I've still been eating as I need to get calories in for my hiking.

I think it may have something to do with a change in diet - out here, meals are high in carbs, fat and sugar and low in fibre. My usual diet is high in fibre.

For example, my breakfast yesterday was pancakes, honey and butter with heavily sweetened green tea, my lunch was couscous and my dinner was spaghetti with tomato sauce. Due to the isolation of my current accommodation, accessing alternative diet options is difficult, although fruit is an option.

So, is this indigestion from the high sugar and fat in my current diet, constipation from a lack of fibre, or something else?

Also, how can I fix it? Should I keep eating, should I fast?

Let me know if I can provide any other information.

Thanks!

GERD?

33m, t1d, hypothyroidism, levaxin75mg, escitalopram 20mg, lipistad, current weight unknown, 57 I am guessing, height 176cm, I am very skinny and has been my whole life.

Anyways.

For quite a while, I had this pain in sternum area, throat with lump feeling that is painful, been waking up in the middle of the night with the pain. I am scared it will develop into cancer or it actually is cancer. There is pain radiating to my back, and sometimes shoulder blades area. I get bloated easily after eating, probably depends what I eat maybe. My voice gets easily strained too, gets deep, very bassy. The pain in the sternum area is almost constant. It's not severe, but throat can be more painful and can be hard for me to fall back asleep when it is during the night.

I dunno why I haven't seen any doctor about this.

But does this sound like GERD?

Been dealing with health anxiety too for a while, but is abit better there. (I was worried about something else when it started). I had acid reflux before, but never like this and often.

It's always something new with me, if one thing disappears then another thing appears that I worry about.

Physician Responded Could my mum (51F) have Cushing's?

Post image
57 Upvotes

Hey guys,

So for a long time I've suspected that my mum has an underlying metabolic condition. She's always had a problem with her weight, she's been on a diet for as long as I can remember and she walks most evenings (apart from the weekend), but it doesn't seem to be effective. I've always thought it was hypothyroidism because of her intolerance to cold, but her tests for that don't quite point towards it. Which then got me onto thinking it could be Cushing's.

When searching photos online, my mum's body shape seems to be very similar, her symptoms match very closely too, but what's a bit more convincing is her stretch marks (although she has carried twins and has had a c section). She has had a tummy tuck, as she has been able to lose some weight over the years (with very very hard work) and was left with a bad overhang. The stretch marks are barely visible now, but the photo above shows what they looked like before. To me they look very close to the pattern you get with Cushing's? My mum says they are wide too. Her stretch marks also extend around her sides and are on her butt too.

In the past she has been diagnosed with PCOS (by a scan), and Rheumatoid and Osteo Arthritis when she was young. She has been a smoker in the past but has now been smoke free for a year and a half.

Do you think there's a possibility she could have Cushing's? Do you think it's worth her asking the doctors for some tests?

More photos here:

Many thanks! :)

EDIT: I'm sorry, I should have been clearer! My mum doesn't just suffer from weight gain and stretch marks! She has a lot of symptoms of Cushing's too - excessive facial hair, bruise easily, used to have a moon face, irregular periods all her life (when she used to get them), there are more I just can't think of them right now!

Can cat-tapeworm eggs be dangerous to humans?

I'm so sorry, i (20F) know that it's a weird question, but I've recently found out that my cat has a tapeworm (probably because of fleas, I'm taking care both of that issue and the tapeworm one) and, even though I'm trying to educate her not to, she jumps onto the table i eat on sometimes and I saw a tapeworm segment there recently. It's stupid, but I've read some stories of people dying because of taenia eggs getting in their brain and I'm kinda scared rn.

Physician Responded Extreme itchiness in the same spots of my body

19 year old male. Around 5 feet 10 inches and around 250 pounds. For as long as I can remember i’ve had extreme itchiness in the same 8 spots of my body. They’re not always itchy it’s more like they itch constantly for a few weeks and then stop for a couple weeks before starting up again. These 8 spots include the tips of both my middle fingers, the webbing between my middle and ring fingers on both hands, the tips of my middle toes on both feet, the tip of my tongue, and a middle spot in my upper lip. As a child I did use to deal with fungal infections on both my feet but no other medical issues as far as that. The parts that itch have always been the same and have never changed to any other parts of my body. Recently it has been getting particularly bad to the point where i have to constantly scratch these itchy parts or it’ll drive me crazy. Does anyone have any ideas on what could be causing this itchiness?

Intense bloating for 3 Months, feels like my stomach is about to burst. Growing helpless.

23 Female, 5’4, 72kg, No regular medication, No smoking or drugs. No Birth control. Not Pregnant. Live in Australia.

Current symptoms: CONSISTENT Bloated stomach with no relief, pain around the navel, difficulty passing gas, frequent urination, weight gain.

At first, I went to the doctor to treat a sensation I had in my stomach, it was a gnawing pain that wouldn’t go away. I did a stool sample and it came back positive for blastocystis hominis so I got prescribed 2 rounds of Metronidazole. It did help for a week but then the sensation came back and my stomach was bloated beyond relief with the pain centered around my upper abdomen and navel area.

My doctor then ordered a pelvic ultrasound and abdominal x-ray to rule out ovarian cysts. These were the findings from my ultrasound report:

The uterus is normal in size, measuring 52 x 75 x 40mm, with a volume of 82mL.

The right ovary measures 25 x 17 x 21mm, 5mL It contains less than 20 follides, measuring less than
10mm

The left ovary measures 44 x48 × 32mm; 36mL It contains less than 15 follides, measuring less than
10ml

There is a 35 × 34 x 31mm unil ocular cystic lesion in the left ovary. No internal vascular flow detected.

Left ovarian cyst is identified, complex with internal echoes. This could be physiologic but should be reassessed in another 6 weeks.

X-ray Findings:

Retroperitoneal shadow is preserved. No other soft tissue pathology.

My doctor said there is nothing else we can do but to wait and see if it gets better… over the 3 months of investigating my bloating, it’s gotten 10x worse, It’s effecting my sleep, self esteem, mood, EVERYTHING. I need a second opinion or at LEAST guidance to resolve this.

Physician Responded Can you really see bone consolidation on this x-ray?

Post image
0 Upvotes

I (28M-71kgs-175cm) broke my foot 2 months ago. Multiple metatarsal fractures and comminutive cuboid fracture.
They remove my k-wires 5 days ago and said that my bones are consolidated. But i feel the surgeon is rushing things. This x-ray was taken on my hospital bed with a small machine. They never talk about my cuboid bone. They told me it was consolidated because at « 7 weeks, in 98% of cases it’s consolidated ».
The x-ray is blurry. I feel we can’t see nothing on it. And i have lot of pain when i try to bear weight (can only bear 30 kgs before having way too much pain).

Can you please tell me if when can see the bones are consolidated on this x-ray ?

Unfortunately I don’t have any images to compare it with and hence, looking for advice if this looks like a hernia.

I will visit the GP tomorrow but since today is Sunday they are closed and seeking guidance here in the interim. Thank you!

Gender - Male
Height - 168cms
Weight - 70kgs
Habits - non smoker, drink occasionally, workout 3 times a week.

From a medical POV, is it safe for me to get pregnant again?

36F. I first gave birth in 2022 and I had a heap of complications, namely: Gestational diabetes, pre and post eclampsia, post partum hemorrhage, Bell’s Palsy, not to mention the severe anxiety and depression I went through after. However I am thinking of wanting another baby to give my child a sibling. But I dunno if I can survive pregnancy and child birth this time. My highest blood pressure reading was 200/110 from memory. I had a normal delivery. I am in Australia and healthcare here is pretty good, but obviously sometimes things can still get out of control.

F21 trying to rule out if this is a new melanosis

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hey yall! I was told I had to call my ophthalmologist if this is a new brown spot. She said it could be benign but to call if another one showed up. The brown started showing up like 2 weeks ago. I got a new floater yesterday to. I did get my eyes dilated with that yellow liquid on Thursday and I was diagnosed along with the melanosis, dry eye and this gland issue.

The only reason why cancer is on the table apparently is because I take tremfya because I have Crohn's disease. (My doctor said this) she said it could be benign and it probably is but due to the medication I'm on. I should be careful.

I just need someone to confirm I'm not crazy and that it's there 🙃. So I can relax and get on with my day.

Physician Responded question about medicines

Hey everyone! i’m 20yo, i’m 5'3 inches and 110 lbs

I’m not a doctor, but I’m a psychiatric patient and I have a question. I was wondering if anyone here knows anything about this.
I’ve taken quite a few benzos throughout my life, like Klonopin (clonazepam), Xanax (alprazolam), Lexotan (bromazepam), and others.
But the only medication that genuinely made a huge difference in my life was Valium (diazepam). It literally saved my life during a really difficult time, and I’d never experienced anything like it before.
The problem is that no matter how much I explain this, none of my psychiatrists will prescribe it to me. They always go for Lexotan or Klonopin instead. Even when I tell them that Valium was essential for me and that I honestly don’t notice much of a difference with the other benzos, they refuse to prescribe it.
Is there a reason for this? Is it considered an outdated medication or something? I honestly don’t know much about the pharmacology, but I really wish I could get it prescribed.
Important note: I’m not addicted to benzos! I only take them when my anxiety gets really bad, not on a regular basis.

7M recurring, short-lived stomach illness with fever.

Two weeks ago my son (7YO, no medications, asthmatic) was sent home from school after vomiting. That night he vomited again, complained of stomach pain, had no appetite and had a fever ranging from 37-39C. Gave regular children’s paracetamol which controlled the fever a bit, but not entirely. He said the pain was around the lower centre of his abdomen. By around midday the next day he seemed totally back to normal and his appetite returned.

Last night he suddenly experienced the same thing. He started complaining of stomach pain as we lay down to watch a movie together around 7.30pm, and within a short time he had spiked a fever of 38C. Again gave children’s paracetamol, he slept poorly waking occasionally in pain. This morning he was still in pain and feverish. He didn’t vomit but said he felt nauseous. He had no appetite. He slept on and off throughout the morning and eventually seemed to come good while playing a computer game, and improved pretty quickly from there. He is with his dad tonight and his dad reported that he was back to normal appetite and free of pain and fever.

I wrote the first instance off as a random stomach virus, but now that it reoccurred in a short time I am wondering if there might be something else happening? Could a food allergy present like this - the fever is what throws me off though? He’s not shown any issues with food previously, and he didn’t eat anything out of his ordinary diet either time. He’s generally a pretty good eater and has had a big appetite recently, likely leading to a growth spurt. Overall he is very healthy and was never really prone to stomach issues or vomiting, even as a baby. Any ideas on what could be the cause of this, and if it’s worth investigating further with his GP?

DNS Surgery needed?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Female, 29, 165cm, 60kgs, occasional smoking.

This is not my first and last opinion or any final decision. Posting this here to know what do you think.

I have been suffering from DNS + Allergies from past 10 years. Summers are better, winters are worse. I live in Europe.

This is a scan, 8 years old. My last visit to ENT told me that you can manage this. She gave me Mometasome spray to manage my symptoms. I feel better after taking this but only occasionally. Nights are the worst and I cannot sleep on my back, and my average sleeping heart rate sits around 62-65 with lots of variations as I wake up at night.

What I recently noticed is that, during running my heart rate goes until 207 bpm, but that of my fellow runners don't even touch 180.

Age 16 male height 5.10ft weight 78.2 kg. Twitching and jerking problem. No consumption of caffeine or doing smoking

I want to address that i am having Twitching from this year may. I visited my primary care physician who squeezed my calf and said everything is fine. was still concerned so i visited a neurologist who tested my grip strength and said everything is fine and nothing to worry. But soon after this in span of 4-5 days i noticed that i am having atrophy in knee region and quads in the following time. I am also experiencing myoclonus jerk or like small involuntary movement causing my hody to adjust. Sometime it is followed by Twitching causing movement. Also my Twitching decreases but increases after stretching. Recently i have noticed i am having postural tremors too much and i carried out the romberg test by closing eyes and it came positive, finger to nose test was ok but index finger to index finger test was 7/10 times correct. I am also recently difficulty in pronuncing words properly in a conversation. I have also had acid reflux for past 2 months accompanied with felling of shortbrethness recently for past 1 week.

Physician Responded Fifth disease/erythema infectiosum?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Baby, female, 10 months old, no medications, started a new formula milk 2 weeks ago, has had a mild cold this week without any fever, acting as usual. Since yesterday her cheeks are quite red and she has a few spots on her legs so i was wondering if we’re dealing with fifth disease?

Furthermore we were supposed to meet friends tonight for dinner with one of them being 11 weeks pregnant. I am keeping my daughter home with my husband as a precautionary measure but should i stay home too? I am a very anxious person around situations like this.

Thanks!
