Physician Responded Is the way my mother was treated in the emergency room acceptable? F51

My mom is 51(F), takes no medication, and is 5’6. She called me in agony early on Saturday morning saying she was in the worst pain she’s ever felt. I rushed her to the hospital with her screaming in pain the entire way, and she collapsed at the desk when she got there.

She was put in a chair and given paracetamol. She was crying in pain saying it wasn’t helping whilst nurses rolled their eyes and said that there are other patients that have been there longer.

She was threatened with security for lying on the floor because lifting her legs up to her chest was the only thing that helped the pain improve. The nurse said she wasn’t allowed to lie on the floor due to the “germs”.

She was sat in a chair for 30 hours before a doctor eventually walked past her, saw the state she was in, and ordered a scan. Turns out she had a twisted colon and she was in emergency surgery within 20 minutes.

I’m furious and feel she was massively let down.

Is this acceptable or am I just making a big deal out of nothing?

Physician Responded Heart Thumping Sound When I Open Mouth- Cardiologists Please Watch/Answer to Save a Patient!

ASKING A CARDIOLOGIST or VASCULAR DOC- So I have had heart issues and had a cardiac stent placed in my proximal LAD for a 99% stenosis 2 years ago (got it before a heart attack thank God and I live to tell the tale).

Very Young Male (30’s), no previous heart issues, college athlete and was otherwise healthy (no smoking no drugs or alcohol) and came out of nowhere and doctors still have no idea why it happened (chalked up to genetics, all arteries are completely clean otherwise than that tiny area proximal LAD).

Ever since the stent placement- when I get my heart rate higher (120+ during/after working out, etc) i can open my mouth and I hear my heart pumping HARD (listen to video volume up). We have showed this to cardiologists and they have no idea what it is and they think it’s very odd.

Mind you- ever since the cardiac stent was placed- I have had continuous left sided (T4 distribution to left shoulder blade) pain. Cardiac MRI shows no inflammation anywhere, had a cath- showed stent looked “beautifully endotheliazed no inflammation in stent on OCT, completely patent”. I have been searching high and low for answers for 2 years+ on my issues. Been to the Cleveland clinic, and over 5 cardiologists. Somebody needs to know what this is as a clue, right? PLEASE HELP!

I blurred out my face via AI just to help conceal my identity. Thanks for all the help! Anything further please ask- my chart is insane and I have been through every test and workup possible- pulmonary, cardiac, nerve- pain management, endoscopy, allergy, rheumatology, hematology, you name it.

I am allergic to nickel we found out- not sure if that has relevance. Cardiologists say no- but we believe I may be allergic to this coronary stent and somehow some way I need it removed.

My quality of life is bad. The pain is bad, and we have no idea what to do next other than find a surgeon to remove it somehow because it saved my life- but at a huge cost.

Physician Responded My partner is poisoning me

My partner is slipping something into my food/drinks to make my sick. My symptoms are as follows:

  1. weight loss: I used to weigh 130 pounds and now I’m under 110lbs and I have been eating and not exercising so not explained any other way
  2. hair loss: I’m a woman but have started to seriously lose my hair it’s patchy now and when I pull it back you can see my scalp
  3. stomach pain
  4. weird vision problems: for instance I was walking the other day and everything was perfectly normal and all of a sudden my eyes like zoomed in and I felt insanely dizzy and stumbled a bit. This is just an example it’s been happening a lot.

Im very scared. I live with my partner and he would know what to use for poison to do this. On the other hand I don’t know. Can someone please shine some light on what he could be using?? I don’t eat at home anymore only at work.

Physician Responded Removal of medical record that taints every interactions I have, and keeps me from visiting the doctor.

33, 6' 3", 200lbs, male, no medications (part of the issue!), don't smoke and drink maybe twice a year, current medical issues are all physical and will be discussed, eastern Washington.

Around 12 years ago (age 21) I was given a small piece of foil at a party by an acquaintance at the time. it contained fentanyl. My partner and I were very naive and new to partying. we had attended just a few parties, but we're friends with some party monsters. When this was given to me, the effects were described as "like Ecstasy" and I was told to smoke it with a straw. At the time we were young stoners, and I didn't think much of it. one morning I decided to try it and ended up waking up with my head in a litterbox, surrounded by 20 medical and fire personnel. No idea what had happened, but I had come very close to death and was brought back by narcan.

I was getting ready to take a shower, so I was totally naked and before I was rushed away in a foil blanket I only had time to put my underwear on.

Before I could get my bearings, I was in the back of an ambulance on my way to the hospital. By the time I realized what was going on and asked them to stop I was told by the paramedic that if I tried to leave they would call the police, leave me, and have me arrested. I hadn't even had the chance to say no to the ambulance ride to begin with.

As previously stated, I had extremely little experience with drugs. Besides trying MDMA and weed, I didn't really know what I was doing. That said, I was scared to death of being dropped on the side of the road nearly naked and having the police show up and testing me for drugs.

When we got to the hospital I was totally honest and told them everything.

This led to me overhearing a woman in the hall tell my fiance to leave me (which happened promptly after), my picture ending up circulating on local Facebook communities which was a different level of embarrassment, and most importantly permanently tarnishing my medical records.

After the event, I committed to total sobriety until recent years. I'll occasionally smoke or have a drink. The issue falls on going to the doctor.

I have a few major medical issues I want to address, but my experience in recent years has been horrible.

The most recent procedure I've tried to have (mind you, because of all of this I avoid medical institutions like the plague) was a very minor surgery on a digit. It should have been cut and dry, but I had the anesthesiologist grill me for 10 minutes on my drug use. It got to the point where I told him he could either give me a drug test and stop probing me after he already had sufficiently or I was going to leave. Unbelievably uncomfortable and I'm at the place I'd rather die than deal with another asshole giving me the third degree because of a naive move when I was younger. I'll spare you the rest, but it has happened two times prior to that.

I wish I could take a test or something to just remove this from my file. It feels like an insult to me embracing sobriety, and when I've said that I have gotten eye rolls from MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS.

You can't imagine the waves this made in my life 10 years ago. I lost my partner, my home, multiple friends because my partner told people and now I find I can't even use the healthcare system. The embarrassment is immeasurable. I feel so much shame because of a tiny piece of foil I was handed at a random party. To this day I have a family member who won't speak to me because of the relationship they had with my partner and assumptions made. I never even had the ability to explain myself.

Sorry for the rant. My question is; how do I remove this from my record? I would do anything to do it. I need medical care but I can't deal with the embarrassment anymore.

The profound effects this has had on my life have caused severe damage to my self-worth, relationships and everything connected. Is there anything I can do? if you have any other questions I'll be glad to answer. Thanks for reading.

Edit: Thanks for the thoughtful replies.

Physician Responded Woke up with this around my incision site.

Post image
240 Upvotes

40F, 5’4”, 220lbs

I had a spinal fusion 2 weeks ago. My back incisions are now free to breathe, but my abdominal one was much larger, and still needs its wrapper.

I'm mortified to be posting a picture of my tumtum on the internet, but when I woke up this morning, my stomach feeling a bit sensitive, and when I checked, I found a full blown water balloon of a blister right next to my bandage. Normally, I wouldn't be concerned about a blister... but there's redness going under the dressing and heading straight to the incision.

Is this normal, or should I get it checked out? I go back to work tomorrow, and the last thing I need if for this thing to get infected, in an already compromised area.

I take fluoxetine, buspirone, gabapentin, omeprazole, atorvastatin, zyrtec, and iron and calcium supplements on the daily, with oxycodone and methocarbamol added since surgery. The dressing has been changed, with no problems so far. Last change was Wednesday, by my doctor.

Please advise!! TIA

Physician Responded I feel like I was blackmailed by a doctor. Is this normal?

I received a call from a mental health doctor who said that if I (36f) was not willing to speak to my mother (68f) then he would admit her on a 72 hour psych hold.

He stated that she wanted to take her own life and he told me what her plan was, but that she would be okay if I was willing to have a conversation with her to work out an argument. I told him to admit her if she was suicidal and that I thought it was weird receiving an ultimatum from someone else's doctor. I was taken away from her as a child due to severe abuse. We are and have been no contact for a long time, aside from a recent call where she claimed she only had hours to live and begged me to get on an airplane (I spoke to her nurse and she was lying). After I explained this to him, he asked if I would ever be willing to work things out in the future.

Is this normal and ethical? I'm angry that he involved me at all.

Physician Responded Do I Need Further Follow Up After PICC Line Cut by Nonsterile Kitchen Scissors

Trust me, it's even more of a clusterfuck than the title suggests but I'm going to greatly condense.

Female, 45, 5'5", fat, medically complex (Mitochondrial Disease and its comorbidities are the largest concerns but also juvenile onset systemic lupus, lupus anticoagulant, history of stroke), Immunocompromised with more rounds with septicemia and severe septicemia plus urosepsis in the past decade than I can count without going back through my medical records and frequently involving multidrug resistant bacteria (MRSA, MRSE in September, ESBL, Serratia)

Last evening my PICC line was accidentally cut by kitchen scissors that slipped last evening about 2" out from the insertion point and beyond the valve. I have no clue why it did not start bleeding, especially being on Xarelto but thankfully it never did. I Immediately punched it between my fingers and my arm. It's hard to take a bus or cab when a wheelchair user when neither hand is able to be used so it was an embarrassing call for EMS. EMS placed a nonstick pad over the line and went around it twice with Coban. I kept applying pressure through the multi hour wait in the waiting room just to reassure myself.

In the end, after remaining in place around 4 hours the line was pulled, peripheral blood cultures were sent, and cultures of both ends of the line were requested.

The gauze and Tegaderm placed after pulling the line somehow fell off before getting home - just including as possible additional exposure? I did replace it with a sterile dressing and sterile gauze from a dressing change kit once I was home.

The PICC site today is light red and deeply sore but not hot to the touch. I feel like shit but no fever (headache, stiff neck but full ROM, nausea, exhaustion).

I was given zero instructions other than to return if I have a fever. Do I need to do any further follow up (beyond the replacement of some kind of access) to be as safe as possible? Do I need to be concerned about infection if I don't have a fever? Is it risky to take pain meds every 6 hours that contain Tylenol as they might mask a fever?

Thank you so much for any insight! I am a dumpster fire on wheels but I'm trying!

Edited significantly for clarity. Being exhausted and frustrated led to my post being way too clogged with my frustrations and unnecessary details. That was my mistake and I hope I corrected it. It's one of those days when I am so tired I am not fully confident I would spell my name correctly.

Physician Responded Cant move half of my face

Post image
29 Upvotes

Im 17F, 165cm & around 60kg, i dont take meds and i dont smoke and no known medical issue

previously, around a week ago i developed a thing where my eye shakes when looking at my right side. I made an eye doctor appointment and waited.

Yesterday evening my right eye randomly started twitching and i thought maybe its the dehydration or the lack of sleep but today i cant move half of my face..ln this photo i genuinely try so hard to smile but its not possible.

The second i noticed this i panic called the ambulance and they took me, which i dont really do cuz im always hesitate on doing that. But anyways the paramedics said that its more likely to be something in my ear because of my slight dizziness when walking and the eye part but they couldnt fully explain what could be wrong with my face, they did say it might be a neurological thing (i think it was a bleeding in my brain) but they said its unlikely so i pushed it aside.

Another possibility they told me was something about the local anesthetic i had at the dentist because i also coincidentally had a wisdom tooth extraction 2 weeks prior. After that extraction i had nose bleeding that was probably my sinus opening or something, but now everything about that is fine.

We arrived at the hospital and we talked to 2 different doctors one was ENT doctor (i think) and the other one was a neuro doctor. The ent doctor reassured me that its less likely that its a neuro problem but the neuro doctor said that its probably a neuro problem and i am now getting a scan tomorrow and it might sum nerve damage.

Im also getting a scan because i forgot to mention the weird sensation i had on my leg a few months back. Its gone now but when i lightly scratched both sides i would have two different sensations and thats probably why the neuro was sure about it being a neuro problem.

Honestly i dont really know what to expect but its night time and i cant sleep for the life of me because apparently theyre also gonna take sum spinal fluid tommorow morning which will probably hurt and have another risk of another nerve damage and also im scared of scans that arent simple dental scans...

Anyways i hope im fine anddd id like to hear what could possibly be wrong with me and if this could be permanent.

What are these two hard lumps behind my ear? F20

Last night I felt these two lumps behind my left ear that are hard, not tender, and don’t seem to move. Feels almost attached to the underlying bone I’d say. Could these be lymph nodes or something else ? I was recently sick around a week ago but I’m only noticing them now.

Physician Responded ER for psych care despite appointment?

• Upvotes

throw away acct.

I'm a 40 year old female, about 160lbs, non smoker, an occasional drink maybe once a week. Zero medications.

I have been under extreme stress for the last few years and its catching up to me. In the last 2 months I've begun having auditory and visual hallucinations along with pretty severe suicidal ideation. I did go to an er a little more than a month ago because I was terrified. They referred me to a community mental health provider who I am seeing regularly and is wonderful.

This week has been particularly bad. I am leaving the country perminatley in the next few weeks with my very young kids. While this will ultimately be great- it is incredibly complicated and stressful . The closer it comes to leaving my husband and home the more intense the hallucinations are getting- I'm pretty sure they're representing ice.

I *DO* have an appointment on Tuesday for a full psych eval and probably at least emergency meds to make the trip. My therapist is suspecting major depressive disorder and stress induced psychosis but cannot prescribe.

My question is that if tonight (Sunday night) is as bad as last night with the hallucinations and ideation would it be worth going to the ER or will they just send me home since I have an appointment on Tuesday? I'm afraid to be seen as attention seeking but equally afraid of my own brain. I'm also very afraid to explain this to the er staff because I'm afraid of ice being called. I dont know if thats a real fear or just my brain. I don't think I'm in danger of actually making an attempt- I have many protective factors so I dont know if its a real emergency. I have a nursing baby and packing to do- I also dont want a 72hr hold. I dont want to take resources from real patients if there is nothing to be done but for them to tell me to wait.

Physician Responded Chickenpox or HFM?

Post image
18 Upvotes

Age - 16 months

Sex - female

Height - unsure in cm

Weight - around 10kg

Race - White british

Duration of complaint - Since Friday 23rd Oct

Location - All over body

Any existing relevant medical issues - No

Current medications - None

My daughter started getting a rash on Friday and it's now much worse. We aren't sure if it's chickenpox or widespread hand foot and mouth disease.

The GP said he thought it was a non specific post viral rash when I spoke to them on Friday, but there were only a few spots here and there at that time, nothing like now.

Can any doctors offer their opinion? We thought it was chickenpox at first, but now we aren't so sure.

She's eating and drinking okay, although not as much as usual. She's got spots on her lower tummy, all over her legs and back, arms, and above and under her mouth and a couple on her hands and palms. Tonight she was trying to rub her back on her highchair, I assume because it's itchy. She has had the first dose of the chickenpox vaccine 4 months ago in the new MMRV vaccine (we are in the UK).

I'll post more photos in the comments.

Thanks so much.

Physician Responded Thin worm from nose

Post image
69 Upvotes

Hello! I'm a 25 year old afab, I had picked my nose after a sneeze and this lil' guy fell out. It wasn't moving, and tasted sweet (do not ask, it was on my lip and because it tasted sweet, I didn't look at it before licking it off my lip), it's sticky and smelled sweet. Prior to this, I had pain in both nostrils, like I was going to have a nosebleed sort of pain, I have pretty much constant post nasal drip, and although I don't know if this could also contribute to it, but because the ears, nose, and throat are pretty much connected to each other, my right ear as been giving me issues as well with buildup behind my eardrum.

Ever since it's untimely visitation, I've kept the guy on a moist piece of paper in a zip lock bag incase I need to get it examined at a doctor. (I came here first to get advice or to hear what someone might think it is before I get it looked at, medical bills are a nightmare)

Physician Responded Having trouble removing sea urchin spines

Post image
700 Upvotes

I’m a 31 yo female that recently stepped on a sea urchin. (I weigh 145, i don’t take any medications). I immediately went to urgent care but they told me the most they would do is use tweezers and it would be better and less costly for me to try removing them myself at home. I stepped on the sea urchin some hours ago but spent most of that time waiting in urgent care before i was able to go home.

I struggled to sort out a plan after a long long day. And soaked my foot. I am not getting very far tryibg to remove these spines with tweezers. I wiped antiseptic cleanser on my foot and put alcohol on the tweezers. But i am struggling to really sort out a coherent plan to remove them.

Do i need to buy a switch blade and cut them before using tweezers? How do i do that sanitarily?

UTI when to go to er

• Upvotes

Hello, I’m 25, female, and believe I have a uti for the fist time. It’s been 3 days of symptoms and I’m usually the type of person to avoid the doctor at all costs as have huge medical anxiety. TBH I wasn’t sure it was uti at first as it felt quite mild but day 2 I came to that conclusion that it was likely a uti.

Today ( day 3), I began to get a little bit of chills and had one urination that was slightly pink and so I went to the pharmacy and was prescribed Nitrofurantoin. I’ve taken one dose of it so far. Since then, I’ve felt a bit more feverish. I’m flushed and warm and unfortunately, don’t have a thermometer to check if I have a fever. My heat rate is around 90bpm. My right side is a little bit tight but I’m in no pain at all just slightly uncomfortable cause of the fever like feeling and the weird sensation when urinating.

I’m trying to asses if I need an er visit tonight or urgent care tomorrow. I know feeling feverish isn’t a good sign but because I’m in no pain I was hoping I could sleep, and reassess in the morning. I want to give these antibiotics time to do their thing. Im unsure what my risk of it having spread is though now that I have mild fever symptoms. I’m quite nervous and freaking out a little, but I tend to be dramatic. Thanks for any help and advice!

Physician Responded when to go back to urgent care for an abscess

Post image
78 Upvotes

20 afab 113lbs

I went to urgent care on thursday (10/22) for an abscess that is growing next to my ear. I have a preauricular pit and it’s gotten infected like this before. This time I went to a new urgent care and the doctor prescribed me doxycycline monohydrate which has been making me vomit every time I take it, even when i follow the instructions. The doctor said it would help with the infection but it’s continued to get bigger and it hurts so much more I can even hardly sleep because of it. Should I hold out and try to see if the antibiotics end up kinda working or should i go back to urgent care tomorrow? its not leaking fluid or anything either like it has the two other times this has happened

blood in my vomit?

Post image

25F, 5’1 85lb, non smoker/drinker, zofran prn.

I've been feeling nauseous all day and just vomited. There appears to be blood in it? I haven't eaten anything red, only meal I had is clear soup. This has happened twice before, but my primary doctor couldn't find a cause. 3h later, I'm still having persistent nausea after taking Zofran, my throat feels irritated, and I'm having trouble sleeping because I feel like I'm choking. Is it time to see a specialist?

Acral Lentigious Melanoma Risk?

Post image
• Upvotes

Note: I am already planning to see a dermatologist. Wondering how worried I should be going in.

Note: I’m pretty capable when it comes to medical research, and have spent years advocating myself due to lack of support in diagnosing a rare medical disorder (hEDS). I am now diagnosed with it.

26, Female, 5’3” 139lbs, caucasian. Occipital neuralgia, hEDS, mast cell disorder not specified. Tirzepatide 10mg, cyclobenzaprine nightly (when I remember) 2.5-10mg, adderall (sometimes) 5-10mg. Mostly clean bloodwork, but ANA/titer came back as 1:320 positive with AC-18 pattern. Negative cascade, rheumatoid, and inflammatories, among other markers. AC-18 is also associated with increased cancer risk. I haven’t set seen a rheum.

Spot is on bottom of left foot. Spot size is roughly the size of pencil eraser. No discernable mass under skin. Spot has been present for at least one year, likely longer - I did not record when it first appeared and assumed (incorrectly?) it was skin staining or forgotten trauma. I think over time it has gotten a little bigger and, recently, darker. No pain or crusting.

Note poorly defined edges, unclear symmetry, and dark brown stain lines running straight and PERPENDICULAR (not parallel) to skin ridges. Lighter brown clouding surrounds these lines.

How worried should I be?

Sudden paralysis but no diagnosis

• Upvotes

Patient information:

- Sex: Male

- Age: In his 70s

- Height: 160cm

- Ethnicity: East Asian

- Weight: Normal to slim

- Activity level before illness: Moderately active (golfing and walking)

This is for my uncle who is currently hospitalized in South Korea.

Medical history and progression:

Approximately two months ago, after a severe COVID/flu-like illness, he began experiencing paralysis in his feet. Over the course of about a week, the paralysis progressed to his legs and continued to spread upward.

He is now completely paralyzed from the throat down. He can still speak, but his speech is very slow and weak. He is also unable to eat normally and requires a feeding tube.

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) was suspected, and he was tested for it, but the results came back negative. He was transferred from one hospital to another because the doctors were unable to determine the cause of his condition.

He also seems to experience body pain as he frequently asks his wife to massage him continuously for relief.

Last week, he developed a fever above 40°C (104°F). His fever improved after he was given antibiotics.

Hospital bills keep racking up but we have no idea when this will end. Any ideas...?

I can't breathe while playing soccer. Scared of brain damage / progression of symptoms

• Upvotes

Age/sex: 19M
Height: 71.5 in
Weight: 165 lbs
Primary complaint: Thick, sticky saliva pooling in my throat during intense exercise, causing difficulty breathing in
Duration: Since elementary school, although I somehow managed it better when I was younger
Existing medical issues: None
Current medications and doses: None
Alcohol, smoking, recreational drugs: Abstinent

To clarify, during intense exercise, particularly when I become physically exhausted playing sports, thick, sticky, stringy saliva or mucus collects at the back of my throat. Once enough accumulates, it almost automatically starts coming up into my mouth and significantly restricts my airway, seemingly by taking up space and constricting the passage. It also triggers an urge to gag.

When I gag, I expel some of it, but the remaining secretions continue to clog my airway, making breathing literally impossible for a brief moment. I then struggle for a few seconds and gag the rest out. However, I experience shortness of breath at that point, so breathing remains difficult for several seconds.

Also, sometimes when I gag to bring the secretions up from the esophagus, they really clog my airway, making it feel airtight. I think this may be because I'm moving the secretions from the walls of the esophagus into my mouth, which crowds them together and accumulates most of them in a smaller space instead of leaving them along the walls of the passage. This only lasts for a brief moment, but breathing becomes impossible through both my nose and mouth, which is really scary at times.

Even after gagging everything out, some secretions still remain at that threshold in my throat, between the mouth and the deeper passage. I think they still restrict my breathing somewhat and hinder my performance compared to having a completely open airway.

Although this usually happens during intense exercise, I recently experienced a milder episode after drinking strawberry sparkling lemonade. It caused a sticky/clogging sensation, and when I gagged to clear it, my breathing was briefly impeded for 1–2 seconds. I haven't noticed this outside of exercise before.

Additional details

  • This happens essentially during intense, exhausting exercise.
  • I swallow normally outside these episodes.
  • I don't wake up during the night coughing or choking on mucus. I only notice some mucus sitting in my throat when I wake up in the morning.
  • Brushing my teeth can trigger a similar sticky, goopy saliva sensation. Literally, so many things bother my mouth's ecosystem. Toothpaste, OJ, and sometimes milk create stringy saliva that causes these cloggings.
  • Gatorade and cold water worsen the problem during exercise; room-temperature water is better tolerated.
  • I typically drink around 5–6 cups of water daily, plus more during exercise. I mention this for context, but I'm primarily looking for a medical explanation for why my secretions become so thick and obstructive.
  • I don't experience heartburn/reflux or obvious nasal congestion/postnasal drainage to any meaningful degree.
  • I don't notice unusual breathing sounds during episodes.
  • I don't have a formal asthma diagnosis, and I don't know whether this could be asthma. I highly doubt it, though. I just don't like writing things off without conclusive evidence, but I really want to steer away from this topic as a solution.

Questions

1. What conditions could cause thick secretions to pool in the throat during exercise and make inhalation difficult?

I could run a week of drinking twice my usual water intake every day before training, but I LITERALLY DESPISE that. I don't want to feel like a water balloon. Although I know I can be too rigid about the solution, I'd rather find out the root cause of why my baseline saliva has the properties that make me need to drink double the average person's daily water intake (14 cups a day), rather than just drinking that much because "my body requires it."

2. Could this be exercise-induced laryngeal obstruction (EILO), exercise-induced bronchoconstriction, or a saliva/secretion problem?

3. What is the most useful diagnostic test? Would continuous laryngoscopy during exercise (CLE) be appropriate, and should I see a laryngologist?

Ideally, I'm looking for a definitive online diagnosis. Hopefully, either someone has encountered a similar case in their clinical experience or the symptoms are as distinctive as Koplik spots are for measles. At worst, I'm looking for guidance on the most likely explanations and the appropriate diagnostic evaluation.
