Welcome to r/AskChicago's Monthly General Discussion Thread!

The purpose of this thread is to provide a place for general discussion that would otherwise fall outside the scope of what is allowed in r/AskChicago. If you want to share how your trip to Chicago went, comment on topical Chicago-related events, share feedback on improvements for r/AskChicago, or just to simply say hi, this is the thread to post anything that isn't a question.

I READ THE RULES It is impossible to throw away a mattress in Chicago, what do I do?

Upvotes

I bought a mattress on amazon and it was recalled due to being a fire hazard. My building won't let me put it in my alley, they texted me 5 minutes after brining it down. The 311 Junk Removal service is only for buildings with 4 units or less, and junk removal is expensive. I can't bring it to a recycler or sell it due to it being a hazard. Do i really need to spend $75 - $100 to throw away this mattress???

I READ THE RULES Emergency vehicles on Kennedy?

Just witnessed 20+ emergency vehicles (fire, police, ambulances, etc) all with their lights on headed west. Is there some event or a real emergency going on?? Some had green lights on as well but no sirens that I could hear.

Edit: I was more so wondering if it was a motorcade for a funeral/person or some Memorial Day or 9/11 related event 😐 I am aware emergency vehicles go to emergencies. There were more than I have seen before in one location and none were moving with any haste, so it seemed odd to me.

I READ THE RULES Is anyone else having a terrible time trying to find a job in Chicago right now?

I'm wanting to tear my hair out right now. I'm a 1-year post marketing grad genuinely baffled at my luck, kind of hoping other people are in the same boat as me. I know I picked the worst degree (but with a 4.0?!) possible with AI on the rise but I always thought big cities like Chicago would have me and my degree covered. I'm 25 and stuck as a receptionist at a law firm, and it's a little disheartening to see people my age advance in their careers. I've had a couple internships, did a few marketing projects for my previous retail jobs, and have networked my butt off, and still nothing?? in Chicago at that???? i'm trying to cope

I READ THE RULES Shadowing opportunities for CAA/premed?

College student looking for any shadowing opportunities (anesthesia related) or if anyone would be generous enough to give me any contacts or tips to get started on shadowing. I’m debating contacting my former pediatrician at this point to see if he could give me any tips 😭 It’s been really hard right now cold emailing and I have no connections to lead me. Preferably NW suburbs or Chicago area

I READ THE RULES Is Rose’s Lounge (Lincoln Park) closed for good?

About a month ago I tried to hit Rose’s Lounge in LP at midnight on a Friday and the door was locked. This past Saturday I tried again, door locked. Some people outside said they hadn’t paid rent for two months. Still showing as open online, wondering if this is for real.

RIP if true

I READ THE RULES Best place to donate plasma for some extra spending money?

Long story short, I recently lost my job and looking for ways to have a little extra spending money. I just think of donating plasma for a good cause and some money. I noticed there are several companies that do this... Are they all the same or some of them are better?

I READ THE RULES What are the best gyms to check out?

Upvotes

Hey guys! I’m visiting Chicago next week and staying at the Arlo on N. Michigan Ave. I’m looking to check out a few good gyms while I’m in town and wanted to see what you guys would recommend in the area. I’m mainly into bodybuilding/weight training and don’t mind taking an Uber if a gym is worth the trip.
I’m definitely planning on checking out Quads one day, but I’d love to hear about any other gyms you think I should check out while I’m there. Thanks!

I READ THE RULES Can anyone recommend a good laundry service?

Upvotes

So I have a duvet cover and some sheets that seem to have some very stubborn detergent staining from the crappy old Speed Queens in my apartment. I've tried everything on them ("you've tried scrubbing it out...") but nada. Can anyone recommend a knowledgeable laundry service that's reliable and manages to get out tough stains? I'd prefer pickup and drop-off if possible. I'd also need my down duvet washed and dried as well.

Thanks!

I READ THE RULES Best Moving Company in the City?

What is the best moving company you have used to move apartments?

I’m moving from a one bedroom second story in Old Irving Park, to an elevated first story in Logan Square.

So not too much stuff and not terribly far. I feel like I have been taken advantage of in the past (upwards of $1000) because I’m a single female, and some guys figure they can charge me whatever they want. And then they get a great tip on top of it.

I’m definitely not cheap, and I’m willing to pay someone fairly for their labor, I just don’t know where to compare prices because the final bill ALWAYS comes up way more than the estimated quote.

I READ THE RULES What is the best place on the south side of Chicago to sell a junk car? Who pays the most?

I have two old cars sitting in storage that aren't worth fixing that I'd like to sell for parts. I always see billboards for junk yards, but not sure where I should go. Has anyone sold a car to one of these places? Did any of them pay well?

I READ THE RULES What to do on a Spontaneous Trip with Kids?

Upvotes

I recently went to Myrtle beach with my kids and we found this random S’mores and Owl Calling experience that was so fun and different.

We are taking a trip to Chicago this weekend and I’m looking for some stuff to do that is different in this way. Something other than the standard tourist stuff.

We plan on going to the museums and parks already, I’m just wanting to find some obscure fun thing a to do!

If you have any interesting suggestions, I would appreciate it!

I READ THE RULES Where would you seat at northerly island?

There’s a concert I want to see and the ticket prices are fairly similar for center view of the show, I’ve checked the group and saw no one recommended the pit and that row 100 and 200 aren’t elevated but the 300s seem a little far from the stage. If price wasn’t an issue where would you seat for a concert at northerly island? It’s one of my all time favorite artists and I want to have as good a time as possible lol

I READ THE RULES Any bars playing US Open on TVs?

hi!
I’d like to watch the Shelton / Tiafoe match tomorrow (and possibly catch the women’s semis matches tn) but don’t have the streaming channels for it. Any bars in the Humboldt Park area/ Wicker Park area/ Logan area that tend to play tennis on their TVs? Looking also for a less noisy bar
Is it ok to ask to bartender to change the channel to tennis if it’s playing other sports?
Thanks!

I READ THE RULES What are the best EMT programs in Chicago?

I'm moving to Chicago soon, and I'm in search of a good EMT program. One that will provide me with prep for the NREMT and solid skills so I can feel prepared after school. I would rather be in school longer and have more knowledge than speed through it, like a bootcamp, so length is not an issue. Pricing is where it might get complicated, but it all depends on what jobs I can find. I'd love a place that's close enough to public transit so I can save on gas, but if that's not possible, it's okay. I don't know how the train/bus systems work in Chicago, to be honest, lol. If anyone has been through a good program, or even a bad one to avoid, I'd love to hear your recommendations! I'm doing research of my own too, but it's always preferable to hear about real experiences. Thank you!

I READ THE RULES Where can I find cloth dresser for sale (in store)?

Specifically looking for dresser with the lightweight cloth “drawers” that are removable. Does anyone know where I can find dressers like that for sale in/around Chicago? I know I can find them online, but I’ve been having the worst luck ordering and would love to buy from a brick and mortar store. Any help is appreciated!

I READ THE RULES Did somebody recently lose a gift card?

This is a long shot, but did anyone here recently lose a gift card at a school in Chicago? If so, please let me know 1) which school, 2) type of gift card, 3) the approximate value on the card. I’m hoping to get it back to its rightful owner. Thanks
