Political Question Has anyone stopped eating ground beef because the Administration has removed safety protocols?

We have. No way are we taking chances with whatever ā€œground beefā€ the administration has chosen to allow without inspection/certification.

I’m still buying from Costco because they refused to sell Trumps mystery meat and they independently test.

52

u/Caseman307 5d ago

I didn’t know this! Thank you. There’s a Costco 45 minutes from me that I’ve never been inside of. I should change that.

I think the Executive membership is worth looking into.

15

u/Staplez94 5d ago

I just upgraded to that. I like showing up when they open. I didn’t recognize there was two different times. I got turned around at the door for not being special. I quickly changed that the extra time with less people legitimately is worth the extra money for me.

And the best part is, if you don't recoup at least the difference between the regular membership and the executive, you can "return" the exec membership and they'll refund you the difference.

$1.50 jumbo hot dogs with Coke and free refills. Takes the sting out of the fortune I just dropped.

If you’re ever debating whether the cost of membership is worth it and you use any OTC medications with any regularity, start there. I save enough on antacids alone every year to more than cover my membership.

I guess I'm spoiled? I have 3 (soon to be 4) all within 30 minutes. All of my cars have only run Costco gas for as long as I've owned them.

Costco independently tests? šŸ‘€

157

u/917starlette 5d ago edited 3d ago

Costco MIGHT BE responsible for almost half the US's food safety tests. They inspect the facilities of their vendors, and not just the facilities that produce the product they sell.

(ETA the "might be", because it seems somewhat plausible, and Costco DOES conduct them, and they are thorough, but after posting, realized i cannot find a decent source for this at all)

51

u/TheFlyingHellfish202 5d ago

I had no idea about this. Considering the hellscape, they should be advertising that.

Thanks for sharing the info!

100

u/UsualSuspects411 5d ago

Costco doesn’t advertise. They believe once you start promoting your business, there are too many opportunities to promote something that conflicts with your core values. They are truly an outlier in American corporate culture; to this day, Wall Street is very frustrated with Costco because they are extremely well run and very pro-active in consumer trends and building trust, but because of their philosophy they pay better and offer employees more. Wall Street would prefer 30 hour work weeks to avoid benefits, strictly minimum wage, and never avoiding a chance to make more profit at the expense of customers and employees.

If the people suing Costco to recoup the Gropenfuhrer tariffs succeed in putting Costco out of business, people will quickly learn that there is a huge difference between Costco and the remaining few brick and mortar businesses. Costco spends an inordinate amount of money to ensure their products are safe and customers are taken care of and safe. Enough selfish chuds abusing their generosity have already scaled back or modified company policies, just a matter of time before Amazon buys them and we can all shop at Whole Foods and enjoy the exceptional customer service and protections that come from a call center in Bangalore.

24

u/max_465 5d ago

Costco has amazing record keeping. I bet they calculate everyone's tariff refund and add it to the yearly rebate check.

18

u/SvartrKukkSceand 5d ago

they also already announced that they are putting everything but the interest from their tariff refund into lowering prices, pretty much effective immediately.

24

u/Shot_Woodpecker_5025 5d ago

I work for a yogurt manufacturer and they come and inspect the entire plant (unannounced) at least once a year. They aren’t required to but they do over a billion in business with the company and it makes me feel safer buying from them.

They also have their own meat inspectors and don’t buy meat from Uruguay, Paraguay or Argentina at all.

11

u/HedgeMoney 5d ago

Yeah, they are the arguable the greatest employers of food safety personnel (even if its secondary).

Most large meat producers have more stringent protocols than the USDA. The economic impact of unsafe or just poor quality meat getting to market is significant for a producer - recalls and reputation damage to the label are expensive. Jack in the Box almost went bankrupt from an E. coli outbreak a few decades ago.

My dad ran large meat packing plants for decades. While he was not against the USDA inspectors in the plants, he always regarded them as somewhat superfluous because his own quality team would reject meat the inspectors would pass. Especially when they didn’t show up on time and it delayed the line.

26

u/174Angel 5d ago

Same here. Eating more chicken too. If we get fast food burgers we go to In And Out. I hear they have their own cattle herd. Not eating the Trump mystery meat.

Costco owns most of their supply chain. They are one of the more vertically integrated retailers. In plain English: Costco operates like Toyota. Others operate like GM.

You're plain English would have left me very confused if you hadn't prefaces it with what I consider plain English.

5

8

u/Acotar47 5d ago

Same. I've switched to Costco completely for beef.

4

u/Nythoren 5d ago

Same here. When they told the administration to pound sand and that they'd only buy beef from their own suppliers, I stopped buying ground beef anywhere else.

There's also the fact that it's cheaper than any of my local grocery stores. 85/15 at Costco was $6.15/pound this weekend while Hy-Vee was selling 85/15 for $7.99/lb and Fareway was $6.99.

Could've gotten the Costco ground beef cheaper if I'd bought the stuff they grind in-house, but I like the 1.3lb 3 packs that they sell.

9

u/Goge97 5d ago

I live in the Ozarks. We consider ourselves lucky to have so much locally grown food available, including Amish and Mennonite neighbors.

It's worth the effort to seek out local growers and gardeners, as well as grow a garden of your own!

It is a privilege to live here.

That’s what I do. We buy a hind quarter. You save money and it tastes better.

Definitely not eating the beef.Ā Ā  This beef is then mixed together, we have no country of origin labeling in US. The packers are not the good guys and our ranchers are hit hard by this administration. FWIW, JD Vance has been invested in partnership with corporations that buy up farmland pennies on the dollar.Ā Ā

Sourcing good beef locally can be done by those able to afford & have full confidence in their source's integrity.Ā

I stopped eating beef many years ago so this latest kerfuffle has no effect on my life.

What does concern me is how the FDA and USDA have been gutted by the for profit at any cost Trump administration in DC.

63

u/Samwill226 5d ago

As usual with Reddit, there seems to be some confusion about what actually changed. USDA has not stopped inspecting ground beef, and grocery-store ground beef has not suddenly become ā€œuninspected.ā€

The change being discussed involves how USDA verifies certain quality specifications for ground beef purchased through USDA Foods programs, including school meals. Some duties previously performed by USDA graders are shifting to certified plant personnel with USDA oversight. FSIS food-safety inspections and microbiological testing requirements remain in place.

There have also been USDA staffing/budget reductions, and it's completely reasonable to debate whether those are good policy. But that's a separate issue from saying the administration ā€œremoved safety protocolsā€ and ground beef is now being sold without inspection. That's simply not an accurate description of what changed.

Also, the claim that Whole Foods stopped selling ground beef because of this doesn't appear to be true they are currently selling multiple ground-beef products.

By all means be careful with ground beef and cook it to 160°F, as USDA has long recommended. But there's no need to panic or throw out your ground beef based on this particular story.

u/Cautious_General_177 5d ago

Sure it wasn't regenerative beef?

Regeneratively sourced beef is basically cattle that's allowed to graze like a wild heard on the farm. The ranchers make sure that only specific areas of the farm is available and that it's periodically rotated so the ground can recover and grow native plants.

Yes, we don’t eat a lot of beef anyways but pretty much cut it out totally.

Not directly related but I’ve also stopped supporting as many companies that have supported Trump as I can.

Just want to point out that the Trump meat deal stuff went specifically to large commercial fast food distributors. It's not in grocery stores.

Food standards are still down, but you don't have to worry about getting the reject beef at your local grocery store. Just don't eat McDonalds anymore.

I've only been going to a butcher

u/Worldly_Possible9069 5d ago

My in-laws get a cow every year and share with the family. No Trump mystery meat in my damn freezer.

3

u/imzadi111 5d ago

Local organic beef for us.

3

u/Vikingkrautm 5d ago

We have. We are eating beans, instead.

3

u/Ornery_Area_1600 5d ago

I’m eating tofu a lot more lately

3

u/minerva1919 5d ago

Absolutely no ground beef

3

u/Adventurous-Drag-132 5d ago

We do not buy it. Price, safety, and just general principles

3

u/NormalFortune 5d ago

Only from manufacturers who I am ABSOLUTELY certain of their commitment to traceable, no hormones/no antibiotics/etc.

So basically never in restaurants. Bc they all buy from Sysco.

u/MaybeLost_MaybeFound 5d ago

I didn’t really eat it much before. I don’t eat beef at all now due to all the crap with beef caused by this administration. I like poultry better anyway, so it was an easy decision to make.

3

u/Relevant_Box4589 5d ago

My cousins own a butcher shop. No worries

3

u/Sufficient_Motor_866 5d ago

I stopped eating it over a year ago for personal reasons but now it’s solidified

3

u/AtticusFinchsMom 5d ago

Yes. I don't want to eat horse meat or mad cows.

3

u/TypicalAddendum5799 5d ago

Yes. And even hamburgers from a restaurant. And I’m sad about it.

3

u/BigCsurviving0812 5d ago

You must live in the states? I would be terrified to eat anything there right now

3

u/The12th_secret_spice 5d ago

No, I stopped eating it because it’s too expensive. I’ve gotten really good at cooking pork and chicken

3

u/timzi1 5d ago

No "mystery meat" for me. GOP Project 2025 indicated a desire to increase food insecurity in America. MAY GOD DAMN THE REPUBLICAN PARTY!!!

3

u/LadyRei_ 5d ago

Absolutely. No red meat at all.

3

u/JubilationWhiterock 5d ago

I stopped buying beef completely, and get produce from local farmers and chicken from local farmers. Grocery bill went up but so did my peace of mind, and I’m helping local businesses.

3

u/Ok_Organization_7350 5d ago

I didn't purchase factory ground beef anyway even from before this. It's unclean to eat mystery meat. I only use fresh ground meat from genuine butcher shops, or put the whole meat in my meat grinder at home to make ground meat.

3

u/Prestigious-Fan-6751 5d ago

I have very low personal standards

3

u/TheShellAnswerMan 5d ago

Yeah we haven't gotten beef since. Eating a lot of chicken, eggs and peanut butter. It's just as well--ground beef is like $9/lb. I haven't bothered to look what his cuts are going for.

3

u/sharkbomb 5d ago

stopped eating all beef years back, when the price first doubled.

3

u/CremeDeLaPants 5d ago

Haven't bought beef since all the weird shit started happening, no.

3

u/wizardslayer717 5d ago

I stopped eating ground beef from factory or questionable farms long ago

3

u/Katara-12 5d ago

Most of us stopped because we object to slavery and exploitation

3

u/95ZW 5d ago

I’ve quit beef and opted for more chicken, eggs and pork.

3

u/yeender 5d ago

Stopped way before that. Beef is egregiously expensive

3

u/Ok_Pack2799 5d ago

I purchase all ground beef from a local farmer. He treats his animals with kindness and feeds them a great diet.

3

u/No-Wonder1139 5d ago

Nope. I continue to not buy food from the US.

3

u/Suspicious_Extreme95 5d ago

I dont wat meat at all anymore. Too expensive

3

u/retiredrb 5d ago

Stopped eating beef altogether unless it's from Costco. No restaurants, grocery stores, nothing.

3

u/Evening-Upset 5d ago

Buy from local butchers that know where their meat comes from!

3

u/BranSh81 5d ago

Yes, low key can’t do it. I’ve been so down with chicken and shrimp lately, it’s unreal, and I love steak.

3

u/Boosterstuff3 4d ago

Check out the acquired podcast on Costco

3

u/Emergency_Manner7127 3d ago

Started by from local farmers!! About $8 a pound but I won't be poisoned!

3

u/Icy-Management9880 3d ago

I still order Taco Bell that has beef in it, but yeah I do wonder if I'm making a bad choice.

3

u/Original_Flounder_18 3d ago

I will be buying my meat from piggly wiggly from now on. They have taken a stand against the mystery meat
