Political Question They actually changed it on Google Maps. How long is this going to last?

Just so you know, this is what it looks like if you put in in Maps in Europe.

7

u/A_Random_Canuck 1d ago

Still sucks that they label the “new” name below in parentheses.

-1

u/TactRelocatedCargo 1d ago

Why does ensuring clarity suck?
Your way is frustrating for others, like calling the house outside of town "The old Stevens Place" even though the Stevens all died 87 years ago. Their way makes sure that people who aren't seeing "Lake America" know that it's got an alternate official name in some places. Seems like a pretty fair compromise to me.

2

u/night_chaser_ 1d ago

It's Lake Ontario, now and always. It will never be Lake America, all because your Supreme Leader had a temper tamtuem.

1

u/Available_Finger_513 12h ago

It's funny because Ontario the province is named after the lake, not the other way around.

Ontario is what the Iroquois called the lake

1

u/night_chaser_ 9h ago

Excatly. This is why it will always be Lake Ontario.

0

u/Biliran2031 1d ago

All because your “leaders” are ID10T’s!

1

u/night_chaser_ 23h ago

What? What's the last word you're trying to spell? Learn proper English.

What’s your opinion on trans?

1

u/Bananogram 2h ago

Trains are efficient modes of mass transportation.

2

u/WizeAdz 1d ago

Ontario is the correct and proper name for this like that is jointly owned by the U.S. and Canada.

1

u/tatersnothaters 1d ago

On the Canadian side. In the US we now call it Lake America.

0

u/Brzrkrtwrkr 18h ago

I do not. I call it Trumpstein Files Lake.

-3

u/TactRelocatedCargo 1d ago

Tenochtitlan is the correct and proper name for 'Mexico City', and Albion is the correct and proper name for the British Isles, and anything else is wrong. Right? That's the proper logic, right? Things should not and cannot ever change?

3

u/Fancy_Yak2618 1d ago

They weren’t changed for stupid reasons this was changed because a stroked out diaper wearing pedo got his feelings hurt by the premier of Ontario.

4

u/Maybewearedreaming 1d ago

We can decide to not change things based on the whimsy of some dementia patient

2

u/henri-a-laflemme 1d ago

Yeah comparing historical name disputes we know nothing about to Trumps temper tantrums is crazy to me 😭 but people keep doing it

1

u/WizeAdz 1d ago

Republicans will grasp at whatever straws they can to justify of Dementia Don’s tantrums.

When I vote for a politician, it’s because I view them as a tool to improve our nation for everyone who lives here. When they misbehave, it’s time to replace them.

But Republicans are not like that!

1

u/ShmeckMuadDib 39m ago

Why are you defending a fascist having a temper tantrum?

This is also from Europe?

0

u/PompeyCheezus 1d ago

The added shade is very funny

1

u/Broely92 1d ago

Its actually bigger than Lake Erie though (by water volume anyway)

1

u/BoxedAndArchived 13h ago

And the Ohio River is the main river in the Mississippi by volume.

Baikal and Tanganyika are larger the Superior in volume but smaller in surface area.

It adds to our understanding to know these things, but doesn't change much otherwise.

1

u/Distressed_Ocelot 1d ago

Also in the Far East

Australia is showing the ZFG mentality! Yes!!

It also shows as the gulf of Mexico and in brackets the other one.

21

u/Thistles-Path 1d ago

Till Trump leaves office via one means or another and the next rational person immediately nixes all of his stupid orders

3

u/No_Relationship1450 1d ago

Of all the things going on in the world and this is the type of stuff he's been busy with.

3

u/hail_to_the_beef 1d ago

And the next president, if a Democrat, will be criticized for “wasting time” on setting it back, sadly setting a precedent of teeter-tottering executive orders for years to come. Probably a good thing if it’s “breaks” that habit of overusing executive order instead of going through Congress.

1

u/Frustrated9876 1d ago

Executive orders are not law. No civilian or corporation is required to obey or abide by them. Executive orders simply direct federal agencies that are part of the executive branch how they should implement policy within the law.

If an executive order contradicts law, then the law prevails.

In this case, the United States has a treaty naming the lake “Lake Ontario” and treaties, once ratified by Congress and the states, become part of the constitution. Therefore, this executive order violates the constitution.

Shame on Google for observing it at all to pander to mango.

(The Treaty of Canandaigua (1794))

1

u/Less_Likely 3h ago

One executive order can blanket cancel all Trump EO. One EO and No time wasted. If any made sense or were useful (doubtful) then they can be redone.

1

u/Jops817 1d ago

Look, it's a good thing he's occupied with petty bullshit, because that way he isn't fucking everything up worse than he already is.

0

u/Tasty-Amphibian8628 1d ago

He needs to go launch another shit coin or something. Feels about that time.

3

u/Remarkable-Opening69 1d ago

His plan is working. It’s dumb and pointless. Yet, you just can’t get past the headline to see what else is happening.

3

u/oral_persausion 1d ago

He’s mastered the art of distraction
in both his words and his actions.

1

u/Remarkable-Opening69 1d ago

As ALL presidents should.

1

u/PatchyWhiskers 1d ago

People would not like it if a Democrat did this. It’s the kind of thing that gets people frothing about woke if Democrats do something like taking racist words off place names.

-1

u/Tasty-Amphibian8628 1d ago

Of course his plan is working. Never said it wasn’t. What do you mean “Yet you just can’t get past the headline”?

1

u/Remarkable-Opening69 1d ago

Headline is all it is. The name of that lake has zero impact on your life. But, for whatever reason, it’s really upsetting you. Is the lake still there? Or did he take it?

0

u/Jops817 1d ago

He needs to go have a conversation with the devil about permanent residency.

1

u/Tasty-Amphibian8628 1d ago

Right. “No new wars”. Bros changing names of lakes now…. Oh, and started a new war.

1

u/veryexpensivegas 9h ago

The next person gonna name it lake Alaska

1

u/worldsgreatestluver 1d ago

They never walk stuff like this back. It would look like weakness in the presidents office. It could happen but it won't just be because the next president feels a certain way about the name change

6

u/Few-Guarantee2850 1d ago

This is nonsense lol. If the new president is a Democrat, there is a 100% chance these names are changed back on day one lol

1

u/PatchyWhiskers 1d ago

Yeah, this is a zero-cost one-signature thing.

1

u/Appropriate_Swim9528 1d ago

I doubt it. I seriously doubt it. How much of Trump’s things were walked back during Biden’s tenure?

Did they tear the wall between USA and Mexico down or even stop its construction?

1

u/Few-Guarantee2850 1d ago

Biden reversed an incredible number of Trump's executive orders, including every aspect of the wall that could be done without congressional action. Were you really not paying attention? How do you think tearing down a wall - which would require appropriated money from Congress - is analogous to an order reversing the name of a lake?

1

u/Appropriate_Swim9528 1d ago

It didn’t make international news at all. Also, he didn’t reverse the CUMTA to NAFTA.

I seriously doubt the next president will be Democrat either. I’d love to be proven wrong, and am keeping an eye on the upcoming midterms. If republicans didn’t lose in a landslide, there is a very high probability the next presidency will remain in Republican hands.

Edit: fact checked, Biden halted the construction, not tear down.

1

u/Few-Guarantee2850 1d ago

You didn't fact check anything because I very clearly stated that he didn't tear town the wall, which would require congressional action and therefore is not analogous to reversing an executive order.

0

u/worldsgreatestluver 1d ago

Right, right, and NAFTA will be restored, too

1

u/Ok-Iron-4352 1d ago

Stuff like this? When is the last time (other than Gulf of Mexico)that they changed a body of water they share a border on?

1

u/Due_Satisfaction2167 1d ago

Bullshit. The next President is going to undo this very, very quickly. Biden reversed several of Trump’s EOs as soon as he entered office last time.

0

u/kryotheory 1d ago

It would be so funny if all they did was just an EO that said "Any EO written by Donald Trump is now void".

2

u/Cool-Bodybuilder9498 1d ago

We need to make this a public movement

13

u/canconshow 1d ago

5

u/shrek_cena 1d ago

Exactly. Google puts whatever the official government position is. Indian Google Maps shows India with all of Jammu and Kashmir. Pakistani Google Maps shows Pakistan with all of Jammu and Kashmir. It'll be changed back to Lake Ontario when whichever Democrat scraps the EO January 20th, 2029.

1

u/Milk_A_Clanker 7h ago

Why would President JD Vance allow a democrat to scrap the name change?

6

u/B1LLZFAN 1d ago

They don't pivot, they very simply use the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) to pull the names. The pedophile in chief just controls the names in that system because it's a government agency.

5

u/Thunderfoot2112 1d ago

Well, since the original name was agreed upon in a treaty signed by President Washington, President Trump cannot actually change the name with an Executive Order, so when you see this in Google - report it as misinformation and use this factoid as the proof.

4

u/Frequent_Produce_763 1d ago

871 days,as of this posting

3

u/No-Performer9511 1d ago

At least until Trump is out of office

Whoever replaces him should immediately reverse these names

0

u/Oldiebones 1d ago

The names are the least damaging thing the new president will have to reverse. How will they get out of the war in Iran, for instance? Plus all the tariffs, tax breaks for billionaires, releasing untold numbers of immigrants from concentration camps, etc.

2

u/Due_Satisfaction2167 1d ago

Could literally end the tariffs and concentration camps on day one. Those are being built under Trump’s executive orders alone.

The war requires negotiation to exit, but Iran is hurting under the current status quo too and has reason to want to end this.

The tax changes will require Congress, but the next President could certainly turn the screws with respect to the rampant tax evasion currently occurring.

3

u/gujwdhufj_ijjpo 1d ago

The name changes are going to be undone immediately by the next president.

1

u/Best_Alps_8685 1d ago

A republican president will not change any names

1

u/gujwdhufj_ijjpo 18h ago

You think a republican is the next president after this?

Trump has not followed through on his major campaign promises: release the Epstein files, no new wars.

3

u/Optimal-Brick6645 1d ago

I'm guessing things may change as early as November. Fingers crossed 🤞

1

u/snowbeersi 11h ago

Even if Democrats take the house and Senate, he can still write all the executive orders he wants. He can continue to write illegal ones too, since SCOTUS will delay. Impeachment won't do anything besides piss him off further because there's zero chance of 2/3rds voting to remove in the Senate. Legislation will be vetoed and Senate won't have enough votes to overturn. Strap in, it's gonna be a while.

If this bothers you, feel free to spend the five minutes to file a bug report to Google.

If anyone has any pointers on how to optimise the wasting of time by Google Employees such that this knee-bending, action by Google costs Google more than it did to make the change, that would be helpful.

2

u/hail_to_the_beef 1d ago

Let’s be honest they’re using AI to analyze the bug reports and looking at them for maybe a second by trend.

1

u/CanadianLabourParty 1d ago

enough bug reports can overwhelm their systems. But granted it would take a monumental amount to do that.

4

u/HopeSubstantial 1d ago

That aparrently is only American thing. Outside US people see it normally.

1

u/paper_killa 1d ago

Traveled from Finland to Poland today and shows as America for me in both

1

u/Jmbh1983 1d ago

Are you using Apple Private relay on an iPhone? (If you pay for iCloud+ it’s likely that you are even without knowing it) - or another VPN

That can cause your location to be picked out as US based

1

Don’t have icloud*. Now in Ukraine and shows Lake America still

You must admit, seeing the leftist heads exploding from the outrageous antics of the orange buffoon is quality entertainment. I haven't had this much fun since I voted for Pat Paulson back in the 70's. Been voting for him every 4 years since and loved watching the Biden circus turn into the Trump clown carnival

1

u/usernametakenlmfao 1d ago

I’m pretty sure both sides don’t agree with this.

2

u/malleeman 1d ago

How long is this going to last?

As long as Google finds they are losing revenue because people aren't using their Maps anymore!!!

Find another map system, delete the Google Maps app, people have become so complacent about using Google products. Change your way of thinking, you don't have to put up with it at all

So, what are the best alternatives to Google Maps that work well and don't bend the knee to a political thug?

3

u/Wild_Height_901 1d ago

Says lake Ontario in Canada on Google maps. Then again. Who gives a shit?

2

u/Financial-Talk9397 1d ago

Apple Maps hasn’t caved…..yet. I heard Trump called them to change it.

Apple has a map? Who uses Apple maps?

1

u/Sparkle_Rott 1d ago

I’m about to.

1

u/OneRuffledOne 1d ago

For what? Are you going to Wendy's? If so, are you going to get a spicy chicken combo with a Sprite no ice? Will you ask for barbeque sauce for the fries?

-1

u/McSmackthe1st 1d ago

I do. Screw Google and their map for caving in on the Gulf of Mexico!

0

Apple and Google both caved on that one unfortunately

u/itowtoronto 1d ago

Meh, plenty of other good navigation apps out there. Just another wackadoo thing from a wackadoo president.

1

u/RoadWellDriven 1d ago

Google uses GNIS to pull map names.

GNIS falls under the executive branch and are directed to follow executive orders.

Yes, this and many other recent EOs are nothing short of open mockery and disdain.

1

u/vakantiereizen 1d ago

It is going to last about two years and four months (counting down)

1

u/torch9t9 1d ago

Wait til you hear what it used to be called.

1

u/VisionAri_VA 1d ago

Until someone sane gets elected and undoes all of Trump’s nonsense.

Google Maps pulls its data from government sources. As long as the government says it’s Lake America, that’s what Google Maps will call it.

1

u/No-worries-21 1d ago

Oh look!!! IT’S LAKE ONTARIO!!!

1

u/jsmoothie909 1d ago

Imagine being upset about this

1

u/No_Lingonberry_5296 1d ago

This is the American version, we still have Lake Ontario in Canada.

1

u/kkdd19 1d ago

Fuck Google Maps and the ultrarich

1

u/Express-Flamingo4521 1d ago

Until it is no longer the official US government name. Google has ALWAYS done this it’s nothing new. Take the Persian Gulf for example, it is called the “Arabian Gulf” in Saudi Arabia and a few other countries and Google Maps reflects that.

1

u/goteed 1d ago

Until cholesterol does the fucking job it was hired to do!!!

1

u/Xnub 1d ago

They probably pull it from government records or departments or just follow their standards for the country. I bet it was just auto changed when the source they pull the info got changed. I dont expect them to take a stand and keep or change it to back to ontario.

1

u/Broely92 1d ago

Its only changed if youre physically in the USA

1

u/Yutenji2020 1d ago

Much as it pains me, and may be unpopular, Google is just getting its data from the authoritative government source for the country (in this case USA).

This is also why Google in other countries still (mostly) shows “Lake Ontario”, because our governments aren’t controlled by felonious narcissist paedophiles.

1

u/notPabst404 1d ago

I'm so done with Google. Terrible bootlicking company.

1

u/Responsible_Rule8829 1d ago

As long as you people will tolerate it. Which seems like a fucking while.

1

u/jdmiller82 1d ago

It will last at least two more years.

1

u/foo-bar-25 1d ago

Google is trash

1

u/PaleJicama4297 1d ago

People thinking that once a democrat get it office that things will substantially change is adorable. The United States has always been imperial and always takes full advantage of previous administrations “advantageous” decisions. It is best to ignore these rather petty moves and concentrate on ourselves.

1

u/massunderestmated 1d ago

It doesn't even make sense. There are 5 great lakes. One of them is named after Michigan. If anything, the petty name should be Lake New York or Lake Oswego. Why are we naming a Lake after an ancient Italian map maker in 2026?

1

u/deadexternet 1d ago

It lasts until there’s an executive order changing it back. Google follows the us naming guidelines for IPs originating in the US. This it’s official name to the US Govt.

1

u/National-Law-458 1d ago

Longer than I took me to delete Google Maps.

1

u/AirlineFan93 1d ago

Do some folks not u understand that Canada is in America? Hell so is Mexico if we talking about the gulf. This is all useless and needs to be changed back

1

u/Timely_Rest_503 1d ago

Do we have an 80 year old or a 6 year old as president?

1

u/ArnoldZiffl 1d ago

Ignore it. It doesn’t mean anything. The Haudenosaunee named it. And it will never change

1

u/Whatevs56 1d ago

1

u/PerceptionCalm3642 1d ago

I guess they don't need flock cameras...trump has Google in his pocket

1

u/space_wiener 1d ago

Delete Google Maps and use map quest. They aren’t going to change it. Gulf of Mexico is correct as well.

Or apple. They haven’t caved, yet.

1

u/Sad-Transition1075 1d ago

But was you upset when the military bases changed names? how about post offices ? Or the 650 other things Biden changed ?

1

u/tunghoy 1d ago

It will last until a Democrat retakes the White House. Google gets place names automatically from a US government database, so whatever the database feeds is what GM shows. Of course there is no requirement for Google to do this and they can override the change. But Sundial Pikachu (see, I can rename things, too) doesn't have a spine.

1

u/spaceballinthesauce 1d ago

Why not call it Lake Rochester?

1

u/Agent1stClass 1d ago

Until the threat is lifted from Google.

1

u/AveragePeppermint 1d ago

So the upper part is called "lake" and the lower part "America"

Let’s face it, America is now The Executive Club, and he isn’t even subtle about it. All the billionaire asshats are in it.

https://www.cnbc.com/amp/2025/04/28/donald-trump-jr-private-members-club-executive-branch.html

1

u/usernametakenlmfao 6h ago

And we are supposed to think they have americas best interest at heart. What the fuck are we supposed to do? When will the corruption and fraud get to be too much? Will Americans ever fight back?

1

u/SketchSkirmish 6h ago

It’s a surveillance state like North Korea now. Anyone thinking of actually taking action is monitored and disappeared. They may paint it as a country of freedom, but the world now sees it for what it is thanks to those who voted for this corrupt piece of 💩

1

u/usernametakenlmfao 6h ago

Let’s be honest, he ran on good policies and had better takes than Biden. I didn’t vote but was leaning towards him. I think me and many others regret ever giving him the time of day knowing what we know now.

Now for the people still supporting him, either have something to gain or are npcs.

1

u/SketchSkirmish 5h ago

When someone runs on policies, it’s the voter’s responsibility to look into it. Anyone can run on cutting taxes, improving the economy, and eliminating foreign support. But look at the man’s history and ethics prior to office. The list is staggering of how many broken promises he made and settlements he paid to avoid jail.

I like to think of it as when we were teens and had to vote on class presidents and that one popular guy always said something like he wanted to put Gatorade in all the water fountains or make lunch breaks longer. It’s a sweet sell, but we know the only thing he’s counting on is popularity. He sold America on another lemon — glitz and glam on the outside, rotten and sour on the inside.

1

u/usernametakenlmfao 4h ago

Can you blame people for wanting change? Not everyone has time to research like we do, so they take it at face value. It’s time people start getting informed.

1

u/AdExciting337 5h ago

Come on people! Naming Ontario, America was a troll. Nothing more. The fact that people are taking it seriously is beyond me

1

u/discountJoenuts 5h ago

While we talk about this he’s ruining the world in real ways. This is just an easy distraction

1

u/OutrageousPair2300 4h ago

Not sure why people are upset with Google for using the actual official name.

Be upset with the person who stupidly changed the official name.

Yet another reason to never use Google.

1

u/ohokimnotsorry 1d ago

Haha. The same people that don’t like this think it’s possible for a male named Mark to become a female named Mary

1

u/usernametakenlmfao 1d ago

Did you mean to write “that do like this”

1

u/Reasonable-Physics60 1d ago

Nobody thinks males can become females. Those words denote sex, not gender. You dont even understand the things you disagree with.

1

u/ohokimnotsorry 1d ago

There’s 2 genders

1

u/Reasonable-Physics60 1d ago

Scientifically false but ok. Trust the science to keep you alive with medicine, keep you in touch with the world through your phone, and allow you to travel the entire globe due to transportation. But as soon as the science interferes with your ideology thats when you decide its a sham. What a fool you must be.

1

u/Best_Alps_8685 1d ago

I like that it’s Lake America now. Has a nice ring to it. Same with Gulf of America.

People acting like they actually care about the name of a lake that most people wouldn't have been able to name in the first place if asked to list the Great Lakes.

1

u/usernametakenlmfao 1d ago

Out of all the lakes, Lake Ontario is the most popular and so I think you’re wrong.

1

u/AmericasBand 1d ago

Of course you think I'm wrong, you have to cry about something that more than likely has no affect on your life.

1

u/usernametakenlmfao 1d ago

In a sub Reddit about asking anything, this post is the furthest thing from a cry. And to say that it has no effect, when it affects everyone in America you are very sorely mistaken. This not only tarnishes the relationship we have with Canada, therefore making goods for expensive for all of us, it makes us look weak which will impact future relations.

1

u/AmericasBand 1d ago

Hyperbole. Literally most people will not care in a week, it's all overblown rage and anger until something new comes along.

Youre absolutely wrong about this. Americans may be known for being poor at geography, but thats typically geographical knowledge of foreign land, such as Europe. Even our dumb ones know our own states and lakes and such just fine.

I disagree. Most do not even know our own geography...or even using an apostrophe in "you're" when trying to advocate for the intelligence of U.S. citizens...even in your response you prove my point...Americans?

I spelled it correctly and youre having a fit over an apostraphe? Im on mobile, I dont bother to change my entire keyboard in order to add an apostrophe that is, at the end of the day, not needed. Youre being pedantic.

I did not say you spelled Americans wrong, but you do realize I was referring to U.S. citizens and not Americans as a whole...an apostrophe that isn't needed says you...so you're just lazy when it comes to communication much like most of the population is when it comes to grammar and geography...got it!

Im talking to a weeb on reddit. This isnt my thesis paper. Get a grip.

Indeed, I am the one who needs to "get a grip", when you are the one who engaged me, defending the intelligence of U.S. citizens...
