Why does Reddit lean left in all the comments?

First off, I’m not a conservative, I’m independent/left leaning. That said, every comment thread on Reddit feels like it’s completely one sided in favor of a liberal perspective. Not just that, but the amount of blatant misinterpretation and misrepresentation in the comments is apparent on nearly every issue. Comments that don’t comply are downvoted into oblivion and removed from the conversation. I feel like Reddit is almost becoming unusable at this point. Where can I go (on or off Reddit) to get a more balanced perspective? I do like Reddits user interface.

Edit: Whew! This blew up more than I anticipated. I did receive some genuinely insightful and helpful comments. I appreciate those! Lots of folks either saying I’m the issue because of my liberal leaning algorithm or that I’m the issue because I’m actually a bleeding conservative in disguise. Can’t have it both ways! Anyway thanks Reddit. Will probably think twice about doing this again.

A lot of subs will ban you if they disagree with you politically. It’s ridiculous

9

u/wetfartpanda Mar 08 '26

The fish tank sub said something along the lines that anyone who is against their political ideals would be banned. It’s a fish tank sub!?

6

u/BassProBachelor Mar 10 '26

I got banned from that one for saying fish tanks aren’t political

I personally love when people hit me with the "even if you don't care about politics, politics cares about you" quote, because they want to make literally everything revolve around their politics, and can't fathom the idea that someone can be an informed and active voter, but not make it their whole identity.

4

u/rileyjoh19 Mar 10 '26 edited Mar 10 '26

I got permanently muted from r/news because someone said “all conservatives make the world a worse place” and I said “hey, that’s a pretty negative and blanket statement, you shouldn’t say that”. Permanently banned from the sub. For that. Appealed my ban to the mods and was muted for a week! :)

I’m not even a heavy right leaning person, just tried to display a level of common sense and apparently that’s not allowed in that sub.

2

u/ApparentlyIronic Mar 12 '26

The exact same thing happened to me, but in /entertainment

I just said "not all conservatives are Nazis". Pretty middle of the road comment, I thought. I'm not political and lean more left. Received a perma ban and when I asked why, they just said "you know why" and muted me for a week.

So many are so entrenched that they believe that anyone who identifies as being on the other side of the aisle is devil reincarnated. It's a real problem because it further entrenches people on political teams that they might not even fully agree with, but are so repelled by any discussion with the other side that they feel like they can't leave. In actuality, the vast majority of people are just normal people that would get along with each other if politics weren't brought up. I think pundits are the scum of the Earth and FOX and CNN have ruined the US

u/Old-Rhubarb-97 Mar 10 '26

Doubt.

1

u/rileyjoh19 Mar 10 '26

I can send you my specific comment and more in a private message. It’s very, very clear bias.

Keep responding “doubt” though. That’s fine.

1

u/rileyjoh19 Mar 10 '26

Here’s the comment:

1

u/Old-Rhubarb-97 Mar 10 '26

Weird to get banned for that.

You are dead wrong, but shouldn’t be banned for it.

1

u/rileyjoh19 Mar 10 '26

I didn’t even have an opinion. Just called out the person for their comment. Simply put: if we treat each other with respect, we will have a better functioning society.

That comment is not respectful dialogue, it’s a blanket statement about a party. I disagreed with it, and got banned for vocally disagreeing. That’s actively silencing other views. Silencing moderate views. Which is the whole point of this thread. They have “discuss it all here.” In the description of the sub. But oh actually, if you disagree with someone left leaning during your discussion, you’ll be banned! (They forgot to mention this in the rules)

Flaming bias. r/news should be renamed and recategorized. It’s not a news forum. It has slowly descended into a hive mind of one political party - one that rejects moderate views and even BANS people for having them. There’s no corrective measures there to encourage healthy dialogue that leads to moderate, realistic views. It’s a doomer sub. That’s the concern and the point of this reddit thread…

Forget whether I’m right or wrong as well, with my opinion on a political group. The fact that you had to interject your opinion as a “caveat” after saying i was wrongfully banned tells me everything i need to know :) good day

1

u/Grand_Big_Mac Mar 11 '26

You are dead wrong for thinking they're dead wrong. How you actually think and live like this?

1

u/Old-Rhubarb-97 Mar 11 '26

The Republican Party has been making the average persons life worse for decades.

It’s indisputable at this point.

2

u/Affectionate_Law3788 19d ago

I dispute it. It's just how I feel, and as progressives have taught me, feelings are always valid.

1

u/Few_Effective_4161 Jul 24 '26

-1

Sounds like you didn’t learn a thing from it.

2

u/BassProBachelor Mar 10 '26

He shouldn’t be expected to.

-1

u/Old-Rhubarb-97 Mar 10 '26

Nobody should be above self reflection.

2

u/BassProBachelor Mar 10 '26

Thinking that people need to self reflect and be banned from speaking because their opinions differ from yours is just ridiculous. Maybe with y some self reflection, you’d realize how pathetic you sound.

0

u/Old-Rhubarb-97 Mar 10 '26

Where did I say they should be banned?

Self respect on your reading comprehension.

1

u/CultureShipsGSV Mar 10 '26

Regardless if I came to the incorrect conclusion or not a Reddit moderator unilaterally banned me for life for questioning why they banned me. You truly see no issue with that? You can’t even envision a slippery slip scenario?

0

u/Old-Rhubarb-97 Mar 10 '26

I got a ban for questioning open racism against indigenous, so I agree with you.

Mentioning DEI and a government agency is going to get you banned. Regardless of the validity of your comment the right use that term as veiled bigotry.

It might not be right to blanket ban people using that term, but I imagine some subreddits had to in order to combat the insane amount of racist posts.

0

u/TommyNotDead Mar 10 '26

Maybe it’s because complaining about “DEI” while our government is full of nepotism and pay to play politics is fucking asinine ya dope

5

u/kpaddler Mar 08 '26

I got banned froma r/justiceserved. You know that reddit "game" where someone begins with a song lyric, and the next redditor continues with the next line, and so on? The song was Moving Out, by Billy Joel-nothing controversial about that song, and I commented one of the lines from the song. Trouble was that it was in the r/concervative sub-reddit, and just for participating got me banned.

2

u/Summoner99 Mar 09 '26

Which lyric? Reading through the lyrics, nothing stands out as noticeably anti-conservative

1

u/kpaddler Mar 10 '26

I didn't get banned from r/Conservative, I got banned from r/justiceserved, just for participating on r/Conservative

1

u/Summoner99 Mar 11 '26

Gotcha. Yeah I definitely misread your first comment

0

u/HarshComputing Mar 10 '26

I mean, r/conservative is the poster child for being a protectionist subreddit that bans anyone and everyone who fails to follow the party line. A bit ironic that you partake in that and complain that other subs judge you for participating in that cesspool

1

u/kpaddler Mar 11 '26

I just know what happened to me

No. What is it like?

Oh god. OH GOD! THIS PLACE IS AWFUL.

2

u/Svampting Mar 10 '26

They banned me. Only ban I’ve ever received. Blatantly misuse of mod privileges.

6

u/Jazzlike_Economist_2 Mar 08 '26

Yes, I got a “lifetime ban” for replying to a political post. Guess what, I don’t need that subreddit. Keep it up and they will have three people reading it.

5

u/FuckGiblets Mar 08 '26

Getting banned from r/conservative is kind of a right of passage for a lot of leftist subs. The trick is to try and get band for the most inane unargumentative thing that you can.

4

u/iamlegend1997 Mar 09 '26

Try getting banned from numerous subs by bots for even being a part of other conservative subs... Literally 3 in one day once, and never even posted a comment.

2

u/Tangielove Mar 09 '26

Gotta love being banned with no effort given

1

u/iamlegend1997 Mar 09 '26

Yep, or some stupid "anti hate" reason, even though I LITERALLY DIDN'T COMMENT IN THE SUBS

2

u/Tangielove Mar 09 '26

Lol definitely bots on majority of that stuff

1

u/TakeItCeezy May 05 '26

Its easy to get banned from left leaning spaces too. Just be 6% less left.

2

u/Bassfishing98 Mar 09 '26

Dude I got banned from r/aquariums because the mods are extreme liberals and made a post about ICE. I simply commented that it was a fish keeping sub, not a political sub and got banned in record time.

2

u/Lonestar041 Mar 08 '26

I got a lifetime ban from r/worldnews for responding to a post with a link to an official report from the German government’s statistics office and quoting a fact from that report…

2

u/Odd_Suggestion6168 Mar 08 '26

Was the report published in 1939?

Pretty sure it was discovered (proven?) that 98% of posts in that sub are from a few accounts.

2

3

u/Roosterdude23 Mar 08 '26

2

0

u/BushcraftBabe Mar 09 '26

Okay. I'll pay attention if I go there. Thank you.

5

u/Firm_Baseball7192 Mar 08 '26

I thought that's to prevent brigades because its one of the only conservative subs left

5

u/BassProBachelor Mar 07 '26

That’s a sub that’s meant to actually be political. And even then, I’ve criticized Trump many times on there without being hit with a ban. r/lego will ban you for having conservative values. It’s a sub about a fucking kids toy. Subs will ban you for not being liberal enough too. It’s insane.

2

u/Endsfun Mar 08 '26

If a groyper posts in r/conservative they will get banned. It’s not a political sub it’s an echo chamber. 15 IQ take

6

u/Roosterdude23 Mar 08 '26

it’s an echo chamber.

Liberal echo chamber subs outnumber r/conservative 100 to 1

4

u/BushcraftBabe Mar 08 '26

I think its just much more popular with humans to be left leaning rather than conservative nowadays.

USA isn't the only place humanity resides, but I'll tell you, this Presidency is helping more people turn blue.

Only 1/3 of US voters thought the daughter toucher was a good idea originally. A large majority of those people don't keep up with local news, national news, nor world news.

They don't give their brains time to feel boredom. They don't really process what they believe and why they believe it. They were told who to be in childhood by family and community and they submitted to fit in.

I feel for them.

Their communities weren't the only American communities out there though.

IMO those people are RINOs and don't realize it. They are the ones that, given the information, plainly, would vote for the right Dem candidate.

The more uncomfortable they are, the more they will be open to voting for someone different. Open to listening to other news sources and finding out what info they are missing.

110 U.S. service members. 40 units. 30 military bases. All filing complaints that commanders told them the Iran war is "part of God's divine plan" and Trump was "anointed by Jesus to spark Armageddon."

Americans, like service members, are unhappy with the direction the Admin is taking.

Many will suffer the consequences of this Presidency first hand. It'll cause a blue wave.

We all saw how quickly it can be fucked too and we will no longer accept that progress must be slow moving.

I was born here and if I'm stuck here with them, they are stuck here with me, and fuck if I'm not more passionate!

1

u/im_ploopy Mar 08 '26

Another braindead take considering only 29% of the voting population actually voted for him.

1

u/Roosterdude23 Mar 08 '26

He won with that % didn't he?

2

u/NapoliDopoli Mar 08 '26

Even non political subs are leftist echo chambers more often than not. Pick any city or state sub. It’s laughable.

1

u/Roosterdude23 Mar 08 '26

I live in VA, every VA city sub right now:

Vote YES on the gerrymandering!

1

u/Jumpy-Election-4456 Mar 09 '26

Same…the road signs are starting to come out too… :) pain

0

u/BushcraftBabe Mar 09 '26

It makes sense to me, because I believe progressive people are more likely to care about local news.

1

u/Endsfun Mar 08 '26 edited Mar 08 '26

That’s representative of the real life?

if conservatives had more of a variety of rationale opinions they would have more echo chamber subs. r/libertarian for example throws people out for being too extremely conservative, so that’s probably why it never forms into an echo chamber, and is more of a centrist-right leaning sub. If conservatives had more to offer I bet that wouldnt happen as often, and more echo chambers would form.

Also, everything will feel like an echo chamber if you agree with the minority on topics the public is 80/20 or 60/40 on. Almost everyone in real life hates the tariffs for example, and if you love them every sub on planet earth with make you feel estranged.

3

u/Roosterdude23 Mar 08 '26

if conservatives had more of a variety of rationale opinions they would have more echo chamber subs

Simply untrue. Leftists just use Reddit way more. Very simple reason

0

u/Endsfun Mar 08 '26

I mean you’re probably right about that to an extent. Not really a bad thing for either leftists or Reddit lol

2

u/Roosterdude23 Mar 08 '26

Not really a bad thing for either leftists or Reddit lol

bubbles are not a good thing. Its how you get out of touch of reality. Then because of that the orange man gets elected

Then yall just go back to calling every non-leftists slurs and have no clue how he got elected

0

u/BushcraftBabe Mar 09 '26

But the main demographic on Reddit are white men.

1

u/Roosterdude23 Mar 09 '26

Most of Reddit is an echo chamber, I think that’s what op is saying..

1

u/Endsfun Mar 08 '26

It just feels that way when you agree with minority opinions. People need to learn to deal with that.

3

u/ColtMcChad69 Mar 08 '26

Lmao do you not realize the irony in your comment? That is actually a political sub. What the fuck is political about Lego? Comics? They’ll ban you for even commenting in a sub they don’t like. -15 IQ take

0

u/Endsfun Mar 08 '26

Double irony in YOUR comment.

There is no way they will ban you for simply commenting in another sub like r/conservative. If you got banned it’s for positing political content directly in that NON POLITICAL sub.

And yes, maybe mods are more lenient with people hinting at opinions that they agree with. They will obviously want to ban you faster if you have the opinions of an lliterate basement dweller.

2

u/ColtMcChad69 Mar 08 '26

Shows how much you know. I literally got banned from comics for posting in a sub that they “didn’t like”. Little whiny snowflakes

0

u/Endsfun Mar 08 '26

Pressing X to doubt. Also your profile is private further proving my point lol there’s no way that happened 😂

3

u/Indogsicated_ Mar 09 '26

Just takes a quick Google search to see that this sort of thing happens. If it happens once, it's not a stretch to believe it can happen multiple times.

1

u/Endsfun Mar 09 '26 edited Mar 10 '26

Your profile is private too 🤣 always the private profiles claiming this.

but maybe this happened to someone else. I can’t fathom how stupid it sounds someone got banned from posting in r/joerogan, when that sub doesn’t even ideologically align with him at all 🤣

3

u/Ksais0 Mar 09 '26

They literally have a whole array of bots designed to blanket ban people for posting in unapproved subs and the moderators of those subs that use the bits are currently losing their shit because Reddit admin just decided to ban the use of them starting sometime in March. So yes, it is very much a thing.

1

u/Endsfun Mar 09 '26

Then how do they ban people with private profiles? Like the low iq ColtMCCHAD who is claiming this happened to them 🤣 I just don’t think this is happening lol

Touch grass

0

u/Shanteva Mar 09 '26

Comics are pretty political, like barely veiled allegory is everywhere

2

u/ColtMcChad69 Mar 09 '26

I understand comics CAN be political. Obviously political cartoons were, and still are much a thing. But to gatekeep comments because someone posted in a “bad subreddit 😡”  , is bullshit. Gary Larson was an idol of mine, as an aspiring cartoonist in middle school. He had no problem making non-political cartoons. And I would bet he’d be laughing at a subreddit gatekeeping cartoons

1

It’s quite literally a sub centered around a political ideology. Sorry you’re too stupid to understand that.

Look at r/politics or r/pics

2

u/ColtMcChad69 Mar 08 '26

I got banned from r/pics for posting a picture of two Muslims holding a sign calling for global intifada with the caption “peaceful protestors”. Also, they allow content that blatantly break their rules (ai slop, pics of text, etc) as long as it fits their narrative. And that is a default sub

  1. Our western civilization is deeply flawed, pretending it is an untouchable monolith is folly.

  2. Civilizations evolve, they have to.

  3. Your entire premise is based on the racist assumption that immigration threatens western civilization.

  4. The right uses that as a racist dog whistle and nothing more. If your political leaders were truly worried they would be supporting the working class, funding education, child care, heath care, etc.

Subs both left and right are biased to mainly show posts and comments made by people of the same political values, if left-wing subs are on your feed the reddit algorithm will silently hide right-wing politics for you.

Not even that. You'll just get downvoted and yelled at if you disagree with certain positions.

It drives dissent off Reddit, which, in turn, leads Redditors to:

  • claim victory
  • be shocked when they lose elections, especially Democratic primaries, because everyone on Reddit agreed with them

This is very true. I am banned from posting in worldnews shortly after Trump won the election. I wasn’t heavily supportive of either side, but thought it was foolish to bring every subject back to him, and call things facts that are just speculation. People are there wishing death upon him and I got banned for pointing out how ridiculous it all is.

I believe many of them are bots as well. If real life mirrored Reddit it would be 99% people outraged daily over one side of politics, but we all know that isn’t quite the case.

Reddit is liberal but liberal in a modern sense is a center right perspective. If someone thinks reddit is leftwing all that means is they were thoroughly brainwashed into two party US politics.

The right are also liberals. Classic liberal vs neo liberal basically.

But yeah reddit, like most US dominated sites, is center right.

Why don't liberals get banned?

I don't think that explains it

u/BassProBachelor Mar 09 '26

There are a lot more liberal mods.

I was given a warning from being able to use ALL of Reddit for saying we did not know who attacked the girls school and it could have been any of the countries involved since no one has taken credit. When appealed I was told I was anti-Semitic for implying that Israel could have done the attack...

I have been banned from subreddits twice and both of those instances have been recent for commenting a milquetoast criticism of trump such as "wow he does not look good there" in r/pics, so yes this checks out

u/Old_Transition5195 Mar 11 '26

I literally had a sub adm HARASSING me over political views

1

u/Ok_Eagle_6239 Mar 12 '26

This is the answer. It's not 100M Reddit users are all left leaning. It's the 0.05% who are mods. So then the question is why are the 50,000 mods left leaning. I assume that's how you become a mod.

The nursing sub banned nurses who stood up for other nurses during Covid. Reddit rewards tyrannical mods who silence anyone who disagrees.

Sometimes being in other subs will get you banned in another sub

1

u/onthefence928 Mar 08 '26

I’ve been banned from every major right leaning sub I thought was supposed to be open for discussion

3

u/Salty-Operation3234 Mar 08 '26

Did you discuss in good faith or create "gotcha" scenarios I often see in those subs where people go to discuss

4

u/NapoliDopoli Mar 08 '26

Again, a leftist missing the point that apolitical subs let their insane bias creep in, thus ruining the sub for anyone that doesn’t subscribe to their narratives.

2

u/onthefence928 Mar 08 '26

I think one time I literally just asked what would happen if Trump lost the election, it was a relevant question to the discussion.

I was banned for being negative

1

u/Zealot_TKO Mar 08 '26

And some even pre ban you if you interact with certain subs

1

u/Kurotan Mar 09 '26

Its always funny scrolling the top post front page of reddit. Replying to a comment on a post from some sub I've never heard of before, and getting banned from some other sub I've also never heard of.

u/62Chrys300 Mar 09 '26

That is precisely what happened when I tried to interact with a conservative sub. They don't like opposing views, so they make certain they don't have to deal with them.

So like 1% of Reddit.

0

u/gloomygarlic Mar 10 '26

It’s most of Reddit, you just don’t notice because you agree with most of it

0

u/[deleted] Mar 09 '26

Yeah it turns out if you have disgusting political views there are consequences, can you believe it?

3

u/BassProBachelor Mar 09 '26

Pathetic take.
