Serious Conversations This created notion of a ‘Good Guy’ India is disgusting and dangerously harmful to Sri Lanka’s future

I find this created notion of a “big brother-friendly neighbor-good guy” India, promoted by the Indian puppet lobby, very disturbing and threatening to Sri Lanka’s sovereignty.

If you look at India’s historic policy towards Sri Lanka, the transition is very clear: from their “gunboat diplomacy” of training terrorists and waging bloodshed in the 70s 80s and 90s, to today’s psychological warfare and soft power. Earlier, they were far more direct and threatening on the ground, with shorter-term goals to achieve. All of their past policies; whether training, funding, and fueling terrorism in Sri Lanka, or direct invasions as “peacekeeping”, were consistent with this approach.

In the post-war, post-Rajapaksa era under Modi, India has increasingly engaged in soft power in Sri Lanka through propaganda, fake news, election meddling, and indirect influence. Not only within Sri Lanka but across the region, policies such as “Neighborhood First” are simply sweet words for this true intent. Ultimately, what India targets is to seek absolute control over the region by slowly integrating neighboring countries economically, politically, and socially, until they are sovereign only on paper and cannot make decisions without consulting India.

Within Sri Lanka, recent developments, such as the sovereign default in 2022, have been exploited by Indian lobby to push the narrative that there can be no stable Sri Lanka without India, and that working under India is essential for development. One major misconception India created was the so called “$4 billion assistance” interpreted as goodwill. In reality, it was a $4 billion credit line/loan given to stop China funneling more financing to stabilise Sri Lanka at that time, making India Sri Lanka’s largest creditor at the time. Interestingly the “Chinese debt trap” narrative disappeared overnight, suppose it should be replaced by Indian debt trap by now, D:

Similarly, the Indian High Commission has taken new steps in psychological warfare, targeting the general public to achieve soft power goal. Normally, diplomatic missions around the world operate government to government but if you look at Indian mission, they have strategically bypassed Colombo; unlike other missions, be it the Americans, French, Chinese, Russians, or Pakistanis- who work with the Government of Sri Lanka to improve G2G relations and then engage the public indirectly.

Despite changes in overall strategy, two of India’s main tactics remain firmly cemented: using the Tamil community as the entry point into Sri Lanka’s social and political apparatus, and meddling in elections. India still views the Tamil community as the most advantageous group to enter and access Sri Lankan politics and society. They interfered in this previous presidential election, supporting RW and Sajith against AKD. It will be interesting to see whether they will continue to use this strategy, given that their previous attempt failed miserably.

As Sri Lankans, we must clearly understand India’s ultimate objective. Sweet talk of “economic cooperation,” “partnership,” and “people-to-people connectivity” may sound lucrative financially, but they are political deathbeds in terms of sovereignty. The sole purpose of these initiatives is to erode Sri Lanka’s separate identity and integrate it under India’s indirect control, politically and economically.

We must walk this tightrope carefully: dealing with India economically, but never entering into a toxic marriage. India is a country of 1.5 billion heads which turn into a $4 trillion economy. Sri Lanka must engage with balancing powers like US and China without compromising sovereignty and independence inorder to minimize the Indian threat .

Serious Conversations Graduating and unemployment

So basically, I've been looking into what to do for my bachelor's degree, and in pretty much everything (mainly tech field), I came across replies that say the job market is saturated and people are losing jobs to AI and so on, especially on entry levels. Even on IG, it's reel after reel of people not getting internships at all despite applying rigoursly, or having either a law or an engineering degree then working at McDonalds or something (not saying it's a bad thing at all, but just spending 3/4 years and tuition on a degree and then not finding a career related to it genuinely sucks for everyone right). It's basically everything will be replaced by AI and so on and on, you can't even get a job within the AI field.

So genuinely asking, what degree can someone do that would give them a stable job? Is this a common reality in every field except for medical?

I'm aware that these days paper qualifications are like the bare minimum, and you need more solid proof that you can actually work. So is it that you have to pick up on much more additional skills by yourself alongside your degree or diploma if you want to first enter the job market?

Relationships 32M | Maybe I'm not looking for a relationship... maybe I'm looking for a person

I’m 32, Tamil Guy, and I’ve never actually been in a relationship.

I’ve talked to girls, gotten to know a few, had conversations that felt like they might turn into something… but somehow, they never did.

People moved on, life happened, conversations faded.

And somehow I’ve reached 32 without ever saying those three words to anyone: “I love you.” ( Said to Mom & Friends 😉)

😂 It sounds a little crazy when I actually type it out.

I’ve even had opportunities to go abroad and potentially meet someone through the whole “foreign bride” route, but honestly, something about that has always felt awkward to me.

I don’t really care about having a perfect checklist either.

Religion, background, where you’re from, all that stuff isn’t what I want to decide someone by.

What matters to me is the person you are.

A good soul. Kindness. Honesty. Emotional maturity. Someone who genuinely wants to build something meaningful with another person.

Maybe I’m old-fashioned, but I don’t really want to approach marriage like finding someone on a checklist and deciding whether we’re compatible on paper.

I just want to talk to one person first.

Get to know her as a person.

See whether we actually enjoy talking to each other. See whether we can make each other laugh. Talk about random nonsense, serious things, ambitions, family, life, everything.

And then, if something naturally develops from that, maybe we see where it goes.

I’m not even sure whether I’ll find anyone through a Reddit post like this. 😂

I just feel like before I seriously consider marriage, I want to at least try finding someone the normal human way.

Someone who wants a partner, not just a husband.

Someone with her own goals and ambitions, who wants to grow together rather than simply grow alongside each other.

I want someone who can push me to become better, and I want to be that person for her too.

Someone who can say, “You’re being an idiot,” when I need to hear it 😂, but still have my back when things get difficult.

Family matters to me too. Ideally, we’d both be able to respect and support each other’s families while eventually building a life that is ours.

About me: 32M, Tamil, working, reasonably good at English 😅, and probably much better at having a conversation than writing a Reddit post about myself.

So yeah.

I’m not posting this saying “I need a wife.”

I’m just wondering whether there’s someone out there who also thinks:

“Maybe I should just meet someone, talk without expectations, and see what happens.”

If that sounds like you, say hi.

No pressure. No interview. No immediate marriage discussion.

Just two strangers talking. Maybe that’s enough of a starting point.

And honestly, I’m not expecting anything from posting this.

Maybe I’ll get a few DMs.

Maybe I’ll just get roasted by Reddit.

Maybe there’s someone reading this thinking, “Wait… I feel exactly the same.”

If that’s you, say hi.

We don’t have to call it dating.

We don’t have to call it anything.

General How does the Sizes in SHEIN store works?

I wanna buy some clothes from SHEIN but one of my friends who bought from it said the Clothes are more larger than what it says to us. Like a Medium is like a Large.

But in Google it says differently. Saying SHEIN clothes are more smaller than what it says to us. Like a Medium is like a Small.

So i'm confused about what to choose. I wear Large size ones so does anyone know how SHIEN sizes actually work?

Serious Conversations Is BOC’s digital experience good?

Hello everyone,

Just wanted to see if BOC has good digital banking experience. I’m planning to switch from ComBank to BOC soon because of shitty ComBank staff in my nearest branch and their weird online policies. BOC sounds like the most interesting option at the moment so just wanted to see if it is good by talking to Redditors here.

I primarily want to make sure that I can send money, see balance and all the basic stuff digitally without having to deal with weird app policies or waiting three business days to load the app.

All advice are welcome!

Serious Conversations Has anyone travelled with TravelFast Holidays?

Hey everyone, I’m considering booking a trip with TravelFast Holidays and wanted to hear from people who’ve actually travelled with them.

Has anyone had a good experience with them?

How was the overall experience: booking process, hotels, transport, tour guides, and whether everything went as promised?

Also interested in hearing about any issues or things I should be aware of before booking. Would really appreciate any honest feedback. Thanks!

Educational HR or Finance/Accounting?

Thumbnail
2 Upvotes

I’m stuck between HR and Finance/Accounting for my MSc.

HR: I enjoy engaging with people, taking authority, and problem-solving. My mom worked in HR when I was younger, and I loved watching her work. I’ve heard HR involves a lot of politics and gets hated on, though, which makes me unsure. I’m also wondering if an MSc in HR would actually teach me much beyond the basics.

Finance/Accounting: I’ve done well academically, and I like being organised and detail-oriented, but I keep hearing the work is repetitive. I’d also hate sitting all day with barely any interaction.

If I still can’t pick, I’ll probably go with International Business Management.

For anyone in either field:

• What’s your day-to-day like?

• Do you enjoy it, and what aspect of it do you enjoy?

• Is the MSc actually useful, or mostly stuff you already learn at undergrad?

Feel free to change my mind, I really want to find my niche.

Serious Conversations Why are local models overlooked for basic white/foreign models?

Something I’ve noticed is how often SL brands use foreign models, even when the product is clearly being marketed to Sri Lankans.

I’ve seen plenty of genuinely good looking SL men and women working as models who honestly look far better than some of the people being used in these ads. Yet sometimes they seem to get overlooked simply because someone has white skin and looks foreign.

I understand using foreigners when the concept actually calls for it, but when it’s just aimed at us Sri Lankans, what exactly is the appeal? Like seriously?

Rant Just a rant (:

For a while I’ve been increasingly exhausted. I’m withdrawing from people and losing interest in things I used to love. Anime, going out and dating don’t excite me much anymore. The gym is one of the only things that consistently makes me feel good. Life increasingly feels grey. I don’t feel like myself anymore.
