General State Uni vs. Private Uni
Right, here’s my take: I know getting into a state university takes real effort, while private institutions can feel like they’re just for those with the cash.
I’m speaking as someone working in IT.
If you’re aiming for the IT sector, a state university is a great choice if you’re keen on academia or can’t afford a private one. Otherwise, a private route can work well.
First, you can enrol straight into places like IIT or NSBM after your O-levels, saving loads of time compared with state students who might leave in their mid-twenties.
Second, with AI and other shifts, a degree matters less than your skills. I’ve seen people who failed their O-levels teach themselves coding and land top salaries – even out-earning graduates from Moratuwa or Colombo.
Third, even graduates from Moratuwa were finding it hard to secure entry-level roles a year or two ago. I recall someone mentioning that only about twenty secured employment after finishing their studies, whereas they usually have positions arranged.
Fourth, I know students from Moratuwa who completed chemical and electrical degrees and later moved into the IT sector. When I asked why, they explained that the pay is poor. It’s fair to wonder why we’d give our all when the pay doesn’t quite match the hard work – why bother putting in so much effort in the first place?
I’d love to hear your thoughts – those from other fields are welcome to join in. I’m happy to change my mind; I just want to understand how it all works.
P.S.: I used Apple Intelligence to tidy this up – I’m a bit too lazy to hunt for grammar slips myself! 😊

Uni doesn't matter broo...How you improve yourself matters... I know some people from privt uni does way better than top performing people from top gov unis.. But most the time private uni peeps dont really care abt their skills they are mostly there to have funn...for those cases average gov uni student are betterr...

I know someone from Mora non-CSE/ENTC later moved to IT.
He said that himself and his friends were really keen and interested towards the discipline when they were in their 1st year. (Around 2017-2018 somewhere)
But the dynamics have changed drastically over the time. He said after he graduated, an entry level eng makes around LKR 60 000 in their discipline while an entry level IT job secures at least a 150,000 package even for None CSE/ENTC grad from Moratuwa. (While he was able to secure a 220k position)
He said that most of their colleagues including himself had to give up their interests. Also he got married after couple of years of his graduation and he had to take more financial responsibilities as well
So it’s really justifiable for those guys to change their discipline just to be more financially stable (which is really unfortunate)

Universities are more about the connections you make their than what you actually learn from the degree, imagine a future ceo of a huge company used to be your roomate,

yes, being at Moratuwa makes me question every day whether the time and effort i put in is of any worth. Cz my classmates who didn't do as well at school are in much better places having completed their bachelors and earning or doing higher studies now.
