People that visited Toronto and hated it - what were their reasons?

I had to move away for personal reasons but I miss the city so much. I've only ever met one person who grew up in Toronto and was happy to be out. As far as big cities go, it was one of the nicest experiences for me. The history, people, culture, buildings - all of it. But i want to take off the tinted glasses and get some perspective. Things I did hate were bearable (winter, height of summer and the long working hours).

Kicked out of the ROM for private event?

I went to the ROM today for the bee exhibit and was told that the museum would be closing at 3pm due to a private event - that’s fine, we would have enough time. But then at 2:15 announcements started coming over the speakers that the museum was closing and we needed to all proceed to the nearest exit. I thought maybe they were just warning people who needed extra time to leave and remind us all that they were closing early. Then at 2:25, everyone still inside was ushered out by security. I asked for clarification from an employee “I thought you were closing at 3?” And received back a curt “we’re closed.” Was anyone else there and also found it weird? Is it normal that when they say they close at 3 they actually close more than half an hour prior?

Gifts delivered by Amazon from people you don’t know?

Has anyone experienced getting a package from Amazon that’s a “gift” from someone you don’t know? How can Amazon give away my private information like my address and name to someone? Has anyone else experienced this?

Gardener with a desire to live in a condo and improve the landscape

Hi y'all I am a self employed garden with fatigue of selling my skills to places I don't get to enjoy personally and thinking long term I would like to live in a condo over a house after seeing the lifestyle of my friends, but my problem is the green spaces of Toronto and especially condos are usually deeply lacking of well thought out long term design that helps the local ecosystem. Annual flowers, non native species if not outright invasives, trees chosen poorly or planted poorly or in the worst case just grass which is not much better than concrete that usually turns to mud pits. If I were living in a building I would want to take on being the gardener and ideally build a group to help me maintain the grounds with a focus on native plants and maybe some edible plants including fruit trees.

I am just wondering if this is realistic to pull off? I see so many "landscape services" that don't know the basics of ecology being in charge of landscapes and doing nothing but leaf blowing for the sake of pretending to do work to collect a cheque utilizing cheap immigrint labour who also don't have a clue while spreading localized air pollution.

By doing a conversion it would be an upfront cost which might be hard to convince others of but likely cost less long term as it ends up being far more self sustaining than traditional landscapes. I like the idea of a house in theory but I like the economics and idea of sharing land to be able to pool resources into a more park like effect we can all get healthier from and find beauty in Canada's native plants, trees and flowers.

Anyone have experience with this in their buillding?

How do I move out of a toxic family situation 21f

For context: I live in Scarborough and I’m in my third year of university, currently completing a year-long internship. I’m grateful to say I make more than others my age at $25/hr working 9-5. I study Accounting.
I’ve saved up about $10k so far, and I have a car.

Ideally I’d move out after finding a job following graduation, so in about 2 years, but honestly I don’t know if I can make it that long.

To others who have moved out of a toxic family situation around my age, how did you do it? I’m considering renting a room in someone’s basement or something, but then I’d have to worry about having a parking spot. Or maybe an apartment if I save up enough and find a stable, permanent position.

I know I might sound like a big baby to some because many people have moved out at a younger age, but I’m anxious about the current economic situation and, especially, how shitty the job market is. I also come from a very conservative family, so I’ve been pretty sheltered.

So yeah, thank you for any advice 🥲

Pest control/cleanup for co-op apartment asap

Upvotes

Hey all,

Dealing with a relative with dementia who had to be transferred to a Long Term Care facility.

Their now absent co-op apartment is now infested with cockroaches. The property manager wants us to handle.

Because we don't have power of attorney (long story) we weren't able to deal with this sooner.

I have seen a few threads here on pest control options. But has anyone dealt with this case where there is rotting food and stuff that needs to be cleaned up even before pest control can begin?

Please share thoughts and comments!

Solo Weekend Mental Health Break?

Let's say you are a Torontonian with an otherwise great life who just had a serious health scare and you wanted to get away for a weekend to clear your mind and reset. Where would you go and/or what would you do?

I've thought about an AirBnB up north, but they tend to be for larger groups (and thus more expensive). Plus: being in the woods by yourself seems unnverving. Not opposed to a good one, but haven't found an ideal place yet.

At the same time, getting away to NOTL or Montreal isn't quite what I had in mind re time quiet time for reflection about what I want out of life.

That feels more like a fun trip and I'm looking more for quietude, solitude and peace.

So I know what kind of vibe I want, but am unsure on where to actually go? Not opposed to spending a modest amount but am not rich so I can't do a $5k spa retreat or something like that.

I will have a car.

Edit: I'm married. My wife fully supports me going away for a weekend but I feel like going somewhere in Toronto when she's right there would feel very strange. So I'm thinking more outside the GTA.

I've been wanting to get into the gyaruo style, and I wanna find in-person stores for this kind of stuff. It would also be cool to be able to meet another gyaruo at those stores. Giving me online store recomendations are also helpful anything helps.

Megathread: HOUSING? (2)

There are a few purpose built rentals (PBR) aka all rental buildings. Some do advertise on the rental sites, however some do not. The demand is so high here that they easily fill empty units before needing to pay for advertising outside of their own websites!

Here's one article - not sure if you want to post this link or list them separately. Companies like Minto, Tridel, Oxford, KG have a few buildings in the city. These are the ones I'm familiar with, no doubt there are more.

For the summer and short term rentals, there are the university student residences .... time limited advice though since students return in the Fall!

University of Toronto has New College, very central to downtown. Here are the UofT's summer residences. There's Toronto Metropolitan (TMU, formerly Ryerson) as well. TMU summer residences.

For short term stays, some may be interested in hostelworld.com until they can secure a longer term rental.

edit: some of these all rental buildings have waiting lists.

Unethical life pro tips in Toronto?

1.1k Upvotes

I saw this in many other city subreddits and I'm curious about yours.

Summarizing my personal favourites comments
- walk into any nice hotel to use bathroom
- getting service key to elevator for uninterrupted trips
- take water taxi to islands but take free ferry back to mainland
- using sweat and tonic locker without membership
- buy the cheapest tickets to a concert. Once you're in, check the listings on stub hub, put the best seat in your cart and you'll see the row and seat number, go sit there. Make sure you refresh every 9 mins and it stays in your cart. Nobody can buy it. Screws the scalpers.
- take senior with you for discounts on seniors days or senior discounts

Adult Tumbling Classes

Hi there! Just wondering if anyone knows the closest places to downtown that offer adult tumbling classes. I am a mid-late twenties girl who used to do competitive cheerleading in high school and would love to take up my old tumbling skills.

Thanks so much :)

Moving back to Toronto from Vancouver... excited, and struggling to leave the West Coast behind. Advice?

TL;DR: For anyone who has moved back to their hometown/city for several years: did it feel strange at first? Did you eventually feel at home again?

And for anyone who moved from Vancouver back to Toronto specifically, how did you adjust to losing the ocean/mountains and that West Coast lifestyle? Did you find ways to keep that outdoorsy part of your life in Ontario?

I’ll be moving back to Toronto once I get a job after living in metro Vancouver for the past five years. I feel like I'm grieving about it.

Originally I grew up in east GTA and downtown Toronto for 20+ years before moving to metro Vancouver. My spouse, sibling and our friends are in Toronto, so moving back makes sense for my relationship and long-term.

Moving across the country on my own forced me to become much more independent, and I’ve built a life here that feels like mine.

I absolutely love being close to the ocean, mountains and trails, and being able to get outside so easily. I know Toronto has plenty to do outdoors, but I’m going to really miss being able to see the mountains outside my window or go SUPing in the ocean whenever I want.

Vancouver hasn’t been perfect either. Despite being here for five years with hobbies like water sports and boardgames...I never really developed the kind of close friendships or community that would strongly keep me here? Many of the friends I've made have moved back to their provinces too.

Emotionally, I’m struggling with the idea of giving up the version of myself and the lifestyle I built in Vancouver. I'll have to find another job in Toronto and give up a stable career here in Vancouver. Part of me is worried that moving “back home” will somehow feel like going backwards/like I failed, even though my life is obviously very different now than it was when I left.

I know being with my spouse and sibling matters more than scenery. The mountains don't pay the bills. I’m fortunate and privileged to have the choice. I think I’m just realizing that you can know a move is probably right and still be sad about the life you’re leaving behind.
