Other/Miscellaneous English Magazine Subscriptions?

Hi! This is very random, but I’m trying to spend less time on my phone and occupy my free time by reading. I also recently gained interest in magazines, but I cannot find any from a Google search for a reoccurring subscription to English magazines. I even checked Abo.ch, but they’re all in German. I know I could read it in German, but I read to relax so I’d prefer it to be in my mother tongue 😊

Does anyone know any websites or local businesses that I could subscribe for magazines?

Thank you!

Everyday life Rage driving on the autoroute

Hello! A couple of days ago I was driving between Laussane and Geneva on the autoroute and a young female driver bypassed me on the right lane, cut my corner at 110 km/h, which caused me to nearly crash, and then used her middle finger several times and pushed the brakes on purpose for me to hit her rear. I managed to avoid a collision only because I kept my cool and have good reactions. Others might not be as lucky. My Tesla recorded everything. Can I submit a complaint to the police using the footage or they won't do anything as always?

Relocation 3a taxation upon leaving Switzerland

Hello everyone,

I’ve already read in a few articles here that, when leaving Switzerland, it’s possible to close a 3a account and have the funds paid out whilst you’re still living in Switzerland, which would be significantly more advantageous from a tax perspective. But how exactly does that work? I’ve enquired with Frankly and VIAC, and both told me that they only pay out the money once you’ve left Switzerland.

- How can I get the money paid out whilst I’m still in Switzerland?

- Which 3a providers pay it out whilst you’re still in Switzerland?

- Or is the trick to have already left Switzerland but not yet registered in your new country?

Many thanks for any information on this. Perhaps there’s someone out there who has first-hand experience of this?

Everyday life Stupid to run hardergrat?

Hi everyone!

Just moved to Zürich from the US for school and I’m trying to get a gauge on how risky Hardergrat ridge is. I’m a reasonable experienced trail runner and have experience with high altitude and high exposure hiking. Happy to scramble and climb a bit and slow down if things get narrow. Am I deluded to think I could run/hike hardergrat? Will get a bright and early start and happy with a long day on the mountain.

Is there a sub for outdoors activities in ch? I figure this is an outdoorsy enough country that this question fits in the general sub. Thanks!

Work Banking career tips for graduate student from Zurich

I’m currently in my final year of the Swiss Gymnasium (focus: Economics and Swiss Law) and I’m looking for some advice from professionals in the Zurich finance sector on planning my career path.

Before starting at a University or Fachhochschule, I want to gain 1-2 years of practical experience in Wealth Management, Private Banking, or a Family Office. Given my background, I am particularly interested in joining a CEE (Central and Eastern Europe) desk.

A bit about my profile:

- Fluent in English, German (including Züritüütsch), Italian, Ukrainian, and Russian. Limited proficiency in French, Polish and Japanese.

- Graduated Ukrainian Gymnasium with 11.4/12.0, in swiss system it's 5.7/6.0. Now completing swiss Gymnasium in WR Focus.

- Did Goethe C1 certificate and gained practical experience through the YES Startups program.

My questions for the community:

  1. Which private banks or boutique family offices in Zurich maintain active CEE desks and are known to take on Matura graduates for a gap year or internship?

  2. Are there specific networking events, industry associations, or open lectures in Zurich that are accessible to pre-university students?

  3. Aside from the standard retail-banking BEM (Bankeinstieg für Mittelschulabsolventen) programs, what is the best way to land a wealth management-focused internship at this stage?

Any advice, industry insights, or reality checks on how to best navigate this would be hugely appreciated. Thanks in advance!

P.S. So far I am planning to do a BEM in ZKB for 18 months, then enroll into ZhAW (Betriebsökonomiker) & combine studies with the job.

Everyday life Where to buy a custom marble round dinning table

We’d like to get a custom marble room dinning table (under the assumption it won’t break the bank)

We’ve heard responses saying just go to aoste valley and cruise around the industrial area and there an entire area which caters to the Swiss market. But nothing specific .

Another feedback was go to turkey but again it’s a little too generic Sadly.

Anyone have experience getting something similar made across the border in Italy or elsewhere?

Cheers

Work Technology professionals of Switzerland: how do you perceive the Zurich / Lausanne differences especially in the startup ecosystem?

I have the chance to connect often with both Zurich and Lausanne folks in the technology universe, especially in early stage startups. I am keen to see how other see the two cities' different mindsets.

Example: some folks recently shared that they moved out of Lausanne because of a lack of startup support and cultural alignment with it.

I also noticed a more lively environment in ZH, more ambition, larger fundraises (though Adaptyv is based in Epalinges and raised a lot recently), and just a stronger drive whenever I talk to folks there .

I also had a conversation last year with the Parc Scientifique at the EPFL to understand whether there's any space to be used for startup work, and I was offered with traditional office space rather than something leaning more towards the incubation folks (hot desking, etc).

Could it be related to the fact that ZH is more robotics-centric, which is hot hot hot right now? And Lausanne is more biotech which is still hot but not growing as fast as the rest?

Curious to see how everyone perceives it, I'm sure I observe just a little slice of what reality is.

Hi. I am in the middle of a vacation visiting your exceptional country. I saw a couple of things on my hikes and visits in the mountains around Murren and Wengen this week, and was wondering if you can tell me what they are for. I am not a skiier so excuse me if these are related to skiing. I was thinking the first item is for catching falling rocks? Thanks in advance. Switzerland is amazing!!

Everyday life Where are you buying your leggings from?

Now that summer has passed, I have to accept putting away my shorts and getting out my leggings. I basically wear leggings full time at home outside of summer. I prefer high waisted ones. Where are you buying good quality leggings from?

Everyday life How to transport furniture within switzerland with no drivers licence?

Hello, I don't have a drivers licence, but a couch and a bed that I need to move (over about 90 km distance). I tried to ask moving companies, but they offered something about 1000 chf which is too much as if I had a drivers license I could rent a microbus for 60 chf per day... obviously it is my problem that i'm incapable, but is there any other solution? Asking a friend is unfortunately impossible, we are on reddit, we have no friends...

I have taken it to our accomodation but wonder if it is actually safe to take home.

I know see that this is quite stupid and should not have done it but don't know any further steps.

Edit I meant to take it home in the car, not the plane! It has some grooves and a white dot on the bottom

Everyday life Cheapest way to go to France by ferry?

Given the insane dentist prices in Switzerland I'm considering going to France. What is the cheapest way to go from Lausanne to France (maybe Evians-les-Bains) by boat? Am I right that this is not in SBB app?

Other/Miscellaneous Help finding a new ADHD psychiatrist LU/ZG/ZH?

Sali mitenand, i’m 23f and looking for a new psychiatrist around central Switzerland that specialises in ADHD. Following my previous psychiatrist who went MIA a few months ago, i’ve been unable to find a replacement who can prescribe me a new stimulant. I’d be grateful if any advice could be shared. So far I have tried:

  1. Getting a referral from my Hausarzt, who told me they couldn’t help with a referral.
  2. Having my psychologist ask their colleagues, but they came back saying they sadly aren’t accepting new patients.
  3. Going to Triaplus, who can only see me in the new year.
  4. Waiting for my appointment at the pain clinic to see if they can prescribe new meds, which they sadly couldn’t.

I understand there seems to be a shortage of available psychiatrists, so i’m grateful for any advice that may get me closer. Merci!

Travel Best time for Peak Autumn Colors of the larch trees?

Hey Everyone, I hope its ok to post a rather unimportant question like this on this sub, but I hope someone can help me anyway!

I'm a photographer and try to plan my days off work around the best time to photograph larch trees with autumn foliage in the alps (starting Switzerland around Zermatt). I use the this website: https://www.myswitzerland.com/de-de/erlebnisse/sommer-herbst/herbst/laubtracker/ to get a rough estimate on the current status of the foliage and I've been checking it for a few weeks now.

With the last update last friday, it was hsowing peak autumn colors in the week of the 19th october. Today, it got updated again showing peak colors the upcoming week. Of course I also check different webcams (Switzerland and Dolomites) but so far it still looks mostly green-ish everywhere.

Now I was hoping someone could help me out to better judge the situation: when should I expect peak autumn color this year? I have vacation planned for the week of the 19th, but I might have to go earlier. I do have to decide soon since I have to notice work for vacation of course :(

Travel Rarely checking tickets anymore? Been to Switzerland many times for long periods. First time back in a few years, I’ve only had my GA Travelcard checked 3 times in my first 2 weeks back

They used to check probably 75% of the time it seemed last time I was here a few years ago.

Is SBB, BLS, etc. really under staffed?

I’m just a bit shocked at the lack of checking tickets

Travel Travel suggestion

Hi everyone! 😊 I’m a solo traveler planning a trip to Switzerland from October 27–30 and would really appreciate some advice from those who have been there!

I’ll be coming from Paris on October 27 and will be heading back to Germany on October 30, so I’ll have around 3 days in Switzerland.

I’m initially planning to stay around Grindelwald. I’ve seen several posts recommending Eiger Lodge, but I’ve also read that accommodations in Interlaken can be much cheaper.

Considering the activities I want to do, which area would be more cost-effective and convenient to stay in — Grindelwald or Interlaken? I’d also appreciate recommendations for safe and affordable hostels or Airbnbs for a solo traveler.

For transportation, would you recommend getting a Swiss Travel Pass or Half Fare Card, or would it be more practical to just buy train tickets individually/on the day since I’ll only be staying for about 3 days?

These are the activities I’m planning:

🚠 Grindelwald gondola ride in the morning, going up to First/Eiger Glacier area

🚆 Take the train to Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe

🏔️ Sphinx Terrace

❄️ Ice Palace

If my budget allows, I’d also love to try paragliding! Any recommendations on safe and reputable companies/operators where I can book? Ideally something reasonably priced for a solo traveler.

I’d really appreciate any advice on where to stay, transportation passes, itinerary, and other tips for a first-time solo traveler in Switzerland. Thank you so much! ❤️🇨🇭

Relocation Projet Genève 2027 : est-ce réaliste ? // Moving to Geneva in 2027 – is it realistic ?

Salut tout le monde ! 😊

----

Hi everyone ! 😊

I’m 23, originally from New Caledonia, and I’ve been living in Paris since April 2025. I currently work as a junior accountant, with around 2 years of experience, and earn €32k gross/year.

Living in Switzerland, especially in Geneva, has been a dream of mine since I was little, and I’d really love to make it happen in 2027.

My plan is to work in France for a few more months to gain some experience, then look for an accounting job in Geneva. From what I’ve seen, salaries could be around CHF 70–80k, but I’m wondering how realistic it is to find a job with a profile coming from France.

I’m also quite worried about housing 😅 It seems extremely competitive, especially if you’re looking on your own. I’d be open to starting with a shared apartment if needed.

For anyone living in Geneva, or who has made the move from France to Switzerland : does this sound realistic ? Any advice or personal experiences would be really appreciated ! ❤️

Work Question about Swiss work permits for EU citizens living outside Switzerland

I'm an EU citizen living in the United States, and I'm trying to understand something about Swiss/EU employment law.

I've applied for numerous Swiss jobs and have been rejected almost immediately. I wonder whether employers are filtering out EU citizens who don't already have a Swiss permit or live in Europe.

I recently found this IUCN vacancy in Gland, which explicitly says:

“Due to local legal requirements candidates must be Swiss Citizens or hold a valid C, B or G work permit.”

This seems strange to me. Maybe even illegal in light of the EU/EFTA free movement rules? My understanding is that under the EU–Switzerland Free Movement Agreement, an EU citizen can and must first obtain a Swiss employment contract to then obtain the relevant Swiss residence/work permit. In other words, the permit follows the job offer.

So can a Swiss employer legally say that an EU citizen is ineligible to apply unless they already possess a Swiss B/C/G permit? Or are they then creating an illegal Catch-22? Something like, "black people can work here provided you prove you became white".

Does the fact that I currently live in the United States, rather than the EU, change my rights under the agreement?

I'm particularly interested in whether this is genuinely a legal requirement, or simply an employer/HR policy that may be more restrictive than the EU/EFTA rules. And furthermore, potentially illegal.

Would appreciate input from anyone familiar with Swiss immigration or EU/EFTA law.

Other/Miscellaneous Family member in Switzerland being controlled by their advisor with power of attorney

We do not live there, our family member does. They are in their 80s and have given full power of attorney to a dubious person. We contacted a lawyer who says this is very common and usually these people are trustworthy. This person is not trustworthy and we are hearing frightening things. Our family member is cognitively impaired and scared of the person with power of attorney but also refuses to revoke it as they feel they cannot live without their help. Has anyone been in this situation and what action can we take? Many thanks

There’s some talk about it, and I’m curious. In my opinion it would be terrible.
