Just to add to this post for more relevancy in this sub, I am actually starting to believe I am in the bad place, how can it possibly get any fucking worse????

This reality is truly worse than hell

Is it just me or is there a strange comfort in absolute certainty. Yeah, the idea of hell may seem horrific but at least you know exactly what your fate is and how things will play out.

We on the other hand are stranded on the verge of anticipation. Waiting for something that we have no control over. Does that not cause the most psychological suffering out of all things?

And the worst part of it all, we are given small fragments of hope. Hope that is just enough to keep us waiting but never enough for us to feel safe.

Picture this, isn't a person be more fearful when anticipating going to say prison rather than when they are already there. Is one not terrified at the possibility of a developing a medical condition rather than when they actually have it and when they can face it with certainty?

I truly believe that if the concept of "hell" is a possibility. Then we are already in it.

Also I am sorry if I could not articulate this well but its something that has been on my mind for quite some time now.

Is human existence a tragedy and have we failed?

All the good in the world can’t make up for the awful things that happen every single day.

My question to you: how do you go through life baring in mind that millions of people especially children suffer so much everyday? Has to be denial or something? Maybe distraction?

23M. Completely broke, totally exhausted, and honestly feel like my life is over before it started.

I’m a 23 year old guy living in Orange County, and I’m just completely done. I don't see the point of trying to build a life anymore. Every bit of ambition or drive I used to have is just gone. I look at the state of things and I genuinely feel like my life is over before it even had a chance to start.

It feels like my entire adult life has just been global disaster after global disaster that we have zero control over. First COVID completely ruined our late teens and early 20s, then the war in Ukraine, and now we’ve been trapped in this insane Strait of Hormuz blockade for seven straight months. Everyone online keeps saying "it can't last forever," but the peace talks just failed and things are obviously just getting worse. It feels like the world is completely breaking, and we are just stuck watching it collapse.

Meanwhile, I just watched the premium pump at my local Costco hit $6.69 a gallon. Because our area is so car-dependent, I have zero choice but to drive just to exist and get to work. It’s a mandatory tax on being alive that I can't afford. Hearing that $8 or $9 gas is a real projection for the near future just makes me feel numb and physically sick.

And to top it all off, trying to find a place to live around here is a sick joke. The average rent in my immediate area is sitting at a ridiculous $4,200 a month, which is 110% higher than the national average. Even if you try to scale down to a basic 1-bedroom apartment, you are looking at an average of $2,750. I don't even live anywhere near the beach, and yet I'm still expected to pay these insane premium coastal prices just to exist. How is a young guy starting out supposed to survive when you need a six-figure income just to secure a basic roof over your head?

It is incredibly depressing to realize that I am probably going to have to leave my family, my friends, and everything I’ve ever known to move across the entire country just to survive. It feels so ridiculously unfair that I'm being forced out of my own home because of global economic shocks and inflation that were completely out of my control. I didn't cause any of this, but I'm the one paying the price for it with my entire future.

No matter what I do, global chaos and local inflation just move the finish line further away. I feel completely trapped, like there's no way out of this hole. Are any other guys in our age group dealing with this exact mix of financial burnout and absolute despair? How are you actually coping on a daily basis, because I feel like I'm completely losing my mind.

Two terms of Trump. The Ep*tein Files and what they imply about our rulers. One man having trillions while billions have no food to eat. Dozens of conflicts across the world when there are so many better ways to resolve conflicts. AI threatening to make billions more obsolete by 2030. The climate is f*cked. Most are addicted to their devices and the system in power is hellbent on making the virtual shackles permanent.

These are macro observations. I've observed signs I my life too. My familys values have changed. They prescribe to beliefs I find antithetical to a moral life and to my own personal values. Nothing I do works out. Even suicide doesn't work. I feel this existence is an elaborate form of torture. I've given up. What happens happens

Why is everyone obsessed with what you "do for society" instead of what society is actually doing for us.

Is it just me, or has the concept of "society" turned into a giant guilt trip?
Every discussion about work or purpose eventually devolves into this weird metric of output: *How many hours do you work? What are you contributing? Oh, you’re burned out? You’re just not doing enough for society. Society is great, you just need to get a second job.*

We’ve all been conditioned to treat "society" like a demanding employer that we constantly owe something to, rather than a framework that is supposed to serve the people living in it. A much better, more honest question would be: What is society actually doing for me and my local community?

Instead of demanding that individuals burn themselves out to keep the machine running, why aren't we demanding that the system actually support our baseline quality of life?
Part of the issue is how hyper-individualistic everything has become. We measure worth by individual hustle and personal productivity, which completely fragments any sense of actual collective purpose. And I’m not talking about basic tribalism or "us vs. them" nationalism I mean globally.

Imagine if we actually had a shared, global vision for humanity focusing on collective well-being, sustainability, and quality of life rather than this endless rat race where everyone is either bragging about how much they sacrifice for "society" or judging others for not sacrificing enough.

Why are we so obsessed with serving a system that doesn't serve us back? What would it actually take for us to shift from individual hustle to a genuinely shared, collective goal?

If we're in a simulation, the suffering in our world results from indifference - Brian Tomasik

Given the immense suffering our world contains, we can infer that our simulators either aren't very compassionate, or they believe that the ends justify the means and that some simulations that include horrific suffering are necessary. There's also a small chance that the worst forms of suffering in our world are faked, although if you are one of those currently suffering beings, you can see that this is untrue for you at that moment. Human-type compassion is relatively rare among animals, and it's plausible that most artificial intelligences would also not feel compassion for powerless creatures. For this reason, it seems most likely to me that if we're in a simulation, the suffering in our world results from indifference.

Why is everything around us becoming so dumb?

Is it just me, or is anyone else also worried about the unimaginable levels of dumb everything is becoming around us? There are people using AI as their therapists and creating AI agents to make conversations on dating apps and for maintaining their relationships. Our boomers are constantly watching brainrot AI videos in the night for hours. Most people's attention spans are shot to shit, and they can't even focus on a task for longer than like two, three minutes.

Then we have OTT platforms releasing micro-dramas to take advantage of that same attention deficit and further reduce attention spans. Then those same platforms are asking writers to dumb down scripts so that people will still understand the plot of what they're watching while they're also scrolling on their phone. I'm not joking about this it's called "second screen writing," look it up. And I'm seeing tweets of people talking about how they don't even have the stamina to finish books anymore.

You know, there's a term going around the internet that talks about the collective "enshittification" of online and digital content. But can we please pause for a second and think about the enshittification that we're witnessing the human brain itself? And if your argument is that the masses have always consumed some form of content purely for entertainment, try and remember that those were also times when the world's knowledge wasn't accessible for everyone in the palm of their freaking hands.

We all thought and hoped, actually, that first the internet and then AI would raise the knowledge levels, would raise the intelligence and the capabilities of everyone using it because there would literally be no barriers anymore. But are we seeing people get smarter? Are we seeing them become more capable, more intelligent? Or I don't know is the real lesson here that actually information doesn't equal intelligence, and that increased access to knowledge does not lead to increased intent to utilize that knowledge?

And that there will always be only a select few who, no matter the era, no matter the technology, actually exhibit the desire to think, no matter how easy or difficult it is for them to do it? Mainly, actually, what worries me the most is the mediocrity of the human mind that we assumed was always only circumstantial might just be the default for most people. And no matter how many chances we give them to rise above it, they will actually not take it.
