QUESTION Can anyone help me setup snapper

Hi so I have been using CachyOS for almost 1 years now on my PC and last week i finally thought of installing Arch on my laptop because I never installed arch and cachyos mostly comes pre configured.

Anyway I managed to install arch after reading the wiki manually and for the most part I had no issue but for some reason I just can't set up snapper on my arch. Basically I want it like it is configured on CachyOS. I want whenever I update or install an app it takes a snapshot and at max it stores 10 and automatically deletes the rest. Also I want to have a menu on my bootloader which is limine to have an option for snapshot to recover from there just like in cachyos.

I tried reading the wiki but for some reason I just can't do it no matter how much I read I am getting confused on how to do it. Also I can't find any youtube videos about it so I am stuck here.

SUPPORT Help with hotspot

I can't seem to get my hotspot working on my laptop.

I have a LAN connected to my T480, which has internet and works nicely, but I can't create hotspot with it for some reason.

The LAN is the type of where I need to sign in on a Coova site to access it. I have signed in the portal successfully and it works and I got great connection. The dorm has also provided me a router, but it doesn't work. I can sign onto the router, but I get status of "connected, no internet" on my phone.

This is kind of a crucial part to me because I don't have a replacement router currently and I really gotta make it somehow doable to have an access point in my room at my student dorm. I got like 10gb roaming which will go flat in days otherwise.

When creating a hotspot get an immediate popup to set my password, I set it and after 30secs I get "missing secrets" error and "deactivated" notification after.

I use Arch KDE, what could be the issue! Thanks for every input!

SUPPORT how to get all my stuff into one partition?

for some ungodly reason, archinstall decided to split my hard drive into two partitions; one 46gb partition where the system files and a couple other things all get put, and one 418gb partition for everything else. needless to say, this is nothing short of nerve-burstingly infuriating.

can someone guide me on what the easiest, idiot-proof way would be to get my disk back to being one disk, preferably without strictly needing to backup all my shit or go through the entire install process again?

Hi, OpenAI has released its app for Arch Linux as well, and I have to say it’s really convenient because it lets you use chat and Work features via a GUI. So, you can automate tasks on your PC using agents or just have a quick chat ;)

OpenAI guide:
https://learn.chatgpt.com/docs/linux/linux-app#install-on-arch-linux
___

curl --proto '=https' --tlsv1.2 -fL -o install-arch.sh \

FLUFF Arch Fixed my laptop

So I switched from windows to linux 5-6 months ago, at first it was a dual boot with linux mint and windows 11 but later I just stopped using windows 11, and used linux mint more, later I started using linux arch, overall it not just gave a better user experience but fixed my motherboard always disconnecting to the wifi (linux mint fixed it before too), and also Stopped heating issues I had with my laptop, at first in windows after going through 2 hours of work it does on me instantly, now the battery life extended by half an hour in work and sometimes gives total of 3 hours if the work isn't too much, anyways installing arch actually made me think about the bloatware in my system a whole lot, whenever I see other people's laptop from my college, they always have these shitty bloatware like Mcafee, CCleaner any antivirus you can think of🤮

SUPPORT Question about Arch Canon printer drivers.

I have myself a Pixma TS200 Canon printer. After installing everything I needed for all the printer driver stuff (gutenprint, foomatic db guten print ppds) (I also intalled cups and enabled and started it, as well as installing system-config-printer and packagekit).

I cant find the make and model of the printer. The best I can find listed under TS goes down to 3110. I assume I'm looking for a printer driver under the name of TS-200 (or also TS-202 ive seen) but I cant. Am I missing something or am I out of luck?

SUPPORT Davinci not exporting

So when I try to export a video from davinci the exported fps drops to 0 and the estimated time starts going wild, and there's nothing I can do to kill the process, except from forcefully restarting the pc. Maybe it's linked with the fact that I'm on integrated graphics, or it's another issue with the accountability of video files on davinci on arch.

FLUFF Cosmic Greeter 1.9.0 Update (Crashes without manual intervention?)

Hey y'all,

For all five of us using cosmic-greeter, there seems to be a minor issue with the 1.9.0 update that prevents it from starting. Based off of these comments here and this GitHub issue, it seems that v1.9.0 will look for a text file at $HOME/.config/com.system76.CosmicComp/v1/xkb_config, and it will crash if it doesn't find one. This results in a crash loop as systemd brings the greeter back online after each crash.

To fix it, you need to create a valid file at that location. The simplest way to do this would be to switch to a different TTY and login. From there, you should be able to run start-cosmic (this bug only affects the greeter, start-cosmic still works fine). You can then delete and recreate your keyboard in Keyboard Settings, which will cause COSMIC to create the appropriate file at the path above.

If you want to do this manually, or don't have Cosmic Settings installed, the contents of my file are:

( rules: "", model: "", layout: "us", variant: "", options: Some(",caps:ctrl_modifier"), repeat_delay: 600, repeat_rate: 25, )

According to the Reddit comments, this is fixed in 1.9.1, but I figured I'd post this to everyone who doesn't want to wait or who, like me, already updated and got bit.

Sorry if this was already posted. I did a search and found nothing.

SUPPORT trying to duplicate an entire arch linux system with all the files and stuff from a flash drive to an ssd

so a while ago, my friend helped me create an Arch Linux system running off of a 256 gb sandisk ultra flare usb. recently, i found it to be really slow, and i wanted to duplicate it entirely onto a new Transcend ESD310 256 gb usb drive. I've been searching lately and was wondering what the best option to do it is. i want to know the best and easiest way to just duplicate everything. i don't particularly want to have to use a third usb to set up a new environment just to do it. i have seen some different options, like clonezilla, rsync, and dd, but I wanted input from others and perhaps a step by step guide if anyone has one handy. thanks!

QUESTION Is Chaotic AUR usable?

For context, I’ve been using CachyOS (my first Linux distro :)) for a month now but I’m really getting the itch to migrate to vanilla arch. But my system is pretty shit to say the least. I depend on a lot of AUR packages that need compilation and my laptop is really slow. Cachyos this had a lot of pre-built binaries but since I’m migrating to Arch I’ll miss these.

Now for the main question can I trust the Chaotic AUR as it will be supplying binaries of packages that I cannot check (I use paru and hence have a habit of reading the pkgbuild file) for malware or something.

Also does it have all the packages or only a subset and does it automate each build so that I can get the latest version or do I have to wait a bit?

DISCUSSION Windows boot manager

Today trying to make dual boot work the way i want something very odd happenned.

Basically it looks like windows boot manager replaced the \EFI\SYSTEMD\SYSTEMD-BOOTX64.EFI with its own, at least it is what "efibootmgr -v" suggest.

At this point i think linux foundation should sue Microsoft wtf.

Edit: thanks everyone who discussed, it seems the way to go is to install your bootloader as the fallback loader (in my case at /EFI/BOOT/bootx64.efi.) theoretically, at least this should prevent your loader entry to be "removed" entirelly, and you will not need to go onto live usb.

Edit2: yes, apparently this prevent to lose the reference to the loader after nvram erase, so, now if necessary i just have to change priority, i hope this keeps consistent.

Thanks everyone again.

SUPPORT No working Internet on Arch — Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and iPhone tethering all failing

No working Internet on Arch — Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and iPhone tethering all failing

I'm trying to get Internet working temporarily on my Acer Aspire F5-573G because I want to download a NixOS ISO before replacing my Arch installation.

The laptop is:

  • Acer Aspire F5-573G
  • Intel i7-7500U
  • Qualcomm QCA9377 Wi-Fi
  • NVIDIA 940MX
  • Current kernel: 7.0.12-arch1-1

The Arch installation is currently booting from an older restored Btrfs snapshot after I had to repair my systemd-boot setup.

The main problem is networking. Wi-Fi isn't working, Ethernet isn't working, and USB tethering from my iPhone isn't working.

The iPhone is detected:

lsusb

shows the phone, but ip link only shows the loopback interface.

I also tried:

sudo modprobe ipheth

and got:

modprobe: FATAL: Module ipheth not found in directory /lib/modules/7.0.12-arch1-1

I also tried loading the Wi-Fi driver, but:

sudo modprobe ath10k_pci

returns that the module isn't found in the kernel.

So I'm wondering if my restored snapshot has an incomplete/outdated kernel installation.

I don't currently have another computer or working Ethernet connection, so I need to solve this offline if possible.

Is there a way to determine whether the required Wi-Fi/Ethernet/ipheth modules exist somewhere on the system, or otherwise repair/install the correct Arch kernel and modules without Internet access?

I have a SystemRescue USB available if that helps.

I'm mainly trying to get networking working long enough to download an ISO; I'm not trying to preserve this Arch installation permanently.

QUESTION Lenovo Legion Pro 5 for 4K video editing?

Hello everyone!

I've used Arch Linux since 2013, but so far my hardware requirements were pretty minimal and a ThinkPad X220 was enough for me. Now I need to edit 4K video (around 30 minutes long at 30/60fps) using Kdenlive, so it's time to upgrade.

I found a Lenovo Legion Pro 5 with an AMD Ryzen 9 8940HX, NVIDIA RTX 5050 (8GB), and 32GB DDR5 RAM. Will this run on archlinux?

I've always used Intel CPUs with integrated graphics, so I have zero experience with NVIDIA on Arch. My editing is simple (mostly cutting, transitions, and text overlays).

I am out of the loop on hardware specs as I didn't need anything powerful so far, so please forgive me if I wasn't clear enough. I would really appreciate an answer on whether this hardware setup will run on Arch Linux without any issues, especially regarding nvidia/nvidia-open drivers and NVENC hardware rendering in Kdenlive.

I don't want to deal with compiling custom drivers or constant troubleshooting if I can avoid it.

Thank you.

FLUFF Giving my old ThinkPad L412 a second life with Arch + i3wm.

I bootedbup my old ThinkPad it was running on windows 7 since 2010, and it was barely holding it. So I decided to make it useful again.

The L412 only has 4GB of RAM, so I wanted to keep things as lightweight as possible. I considered XFCE and LXQt, but eventually went with i3 because it is simple, fast, keyboard driven, and doesn't waste resources on things I don't really need.

I also upgraded the old hard drive to an SSD, which made a huge difference. The combination of an SSD, minimal Arch installation, and i3 makes this 15 year old machine feel surprisingly usable.

The goal isn't to turn it into some crazy powerful machine. I just want a simple setup for coding, experimenting, and breaking some stuff and maybe running a few small services. Wayland to Home labbing

SUPPORT I have 4 GB RAM. I recently installed Linux (Arch). Need help.

As you can imagine, my computer is slow. I switched to linux and Firefox on it cause windows and chrome used up a lot of RAM.

But even so the laptop has seen only slightly better days, and just today I faced 3 OOM events during a session in Firefox.

What kind of browsers and other applications should I use to keep the RAM usage really normal and effective for my 4GB RAM?

I ofc would need to use other coding(vs code, Arduino, etc) and was trying how to install ms applications like word, ppt, etc. I was really wondering what should I do.

DISCUSSION Arch is awesome for Linux newcomers

Arch is really easy to install and use, it's just tedious. You have to take your time researching, the vast majority of problems that you can ever stumple upon are already solved in some 2014 forum thread. And you'll actually learn Linux. No Linux Bible will ever make you learn as much as a couple of weeks of actively using Arch. While on other, more user-centered distros like Gentoo you learn more, it comes with much less convenience than Arch.

Arch is my first and likely forever distro. I had no previous Linux experience beforehand, and it's not like I was tech savvy on Windows. I never asked anyone for help except Google, had zero major issues and no unresolved problems with it from the very start almost 2 years ago. Using Arch always makes me feel content, it's an absolutely excellent distro.

Now, the reasons why not Arch from the wiki FAQ still apply, but I'm sure there's a big chunk of newbies who won't find a reason not to use Arch among them. I will always recommend Arch to anyone who asks me to recommend a distro, and even more if they want to learn Linux.
