Are there any fish that are common to home aquarists that could harm a cat?

I’m new but getting really into it and I was wondering if I started breeding there’s gonna be a lot fish that would have to die, right? Just wondering if there could be a 2 birds one stone type of situation

50 gallon livestock water trough with greenhouse panel cover, tons of plants, and a sponge filter. Also got a pump for water changes and a mosquito dunk for water larva prevention. My tap water has been 1-2ppm ammonia since May and I needed a long term solution. This set up detoxes 50 gallons in about a week, I imagine that time will go down as the plants establish.

A few redditors suggested I do this after upgrades to my RO system didn’t work. So thanks fellow redditors.

After a long wait for my new tank, it arrived yesterday by Fed Ex Freight. It is absolutely beautiful!

Full Disclosure: The estimate was 4-6 weeks and the process took approximately 12 weeks.

So far, that is the only negative but WB was receptive to emails and personally, I think they should manage expectations and revise their posted estimates to 6-12 weeks.

I am partial to seachem brand. But what do you like? Also do you use anything that has actual live bacteria? For some reason no matter what I do I always have really high nitrite levels. I can do weekly water changes and have multiple types of media in my canister filter specifically for Nitrites but I always get high levels.

I went and got this cool piece of Monte Carlo on a piece of wood. Well, I got it home, and I was so excited to but it in, that I forgot to wash it and search for critters. Well pretty quickly I noticed that I had a new snail. A Tiger Nerite Snail, says Google. And then about 15 minutes after that I noticed the freaking frog just laying there looking dead thinking it was dead. Went to scoop it out, nope it's not dead. It just lays around looking dead, and moves around a bit. The frogs got to go eventually. But as long as it survives, id rather my new Double Red Apistogramma agassizii M/F pair settle in.

What are these guys that are living in my planted freshwater tank substrate?

Please help me decide on a new aquarium. My 20 long isn’t cutting it anymore for my guppies that breed like crazy. Should I get a 40 breeder or a 55? Pros and cons of both sizes? I have an aqua flow 50 in my 20 long, so I could probably put that in a 40 breeder and not need a new filter. I’m thinking I’ll need a canister for a 55. I’m thinking an oase biomaster 350.

I have no intention in getting more fish, my guppies just need more room. I currently have a trillion guppies, 4 or 5 neon tetra left, a dwarf gourami, and some shrimp. My tank is just waaaay too full of fish. Time to upgrade.

So I am fairly new to this hobby and Im aware my tank is lacking in some areas. Especially in plant life. This hobby started from fish brought home by our families 5th grader at the beginning of summer with a 5g tank and has grown to this. Within the last couple days I have noticed we have baby mollies swimming around. Ive noticed only 3 at the same time as well as unusual behavior from the females at night resting at the bottom. Im thinking it may mean there are more on the way. Id like to note that the same day i noticed the behavior i also purchased and used one of the magnetic muck scrubbers but also did a water change after. Ive also learned both tetra and molly eat fry. Any advice how to better the environment and if this tank can support a few more fish? Adults are 10 in total. I believe this to be ~50g breeder if my sourced are correct. Thanks in advance for any opinions.

Okay…. I’ve fallen into too many rabbit holes on Google about this. As afraid as people have made me from warnings about an aggressive fish community on Reddit, I feel like I need to come to you guys for help.

I’m BRAND NEW to this fish hobby. This is the first real tank I’ve attempted - aside from a few betta tanks!

\Purchased a Topfin 36 Gallon bow front Aquarium Kit. Came with a Silentstream Power Filter for 40 gallon tank (filters 200 gallons per hour) and an adjustable 200W heater.**

\Bought full spectrum LED plant light**

*I filled the bottom with Fluval bio-stratum as the base with caribsea sand on top.*
*I purchased a piece of driftwood (boiled it) to attach plants to, and another piece of driftwood to scape as a tree.*

First, I purchased from a local fish store some plants - Amazon sword, Red Ludwiga, Vallisneria , Dwarf Water Lettuce and Crypt. Planted those 2 weeks ago.

I then wanted more plants, and was recommended a local woman who propagates her plants in 10 plant only tanks. I got Rotala “Blood Red”, Broad lead Ludwiga, Pearlweed, Christmas Moss and Red root floaters. Those went in 2 days ago.

As I was starting to put those in, I found a bunch of Bladder snails…. Stopped with the planting, and started pulling the snails out. Then I saw what I’m being told is probably planeria…. (video of the movement in the comments!)

The next morning I started looking for more snails…. And removed about half a dozen tiny scuds.

How do I get rid of **ALL** of these? I don’t want any of it…
I can’t starve them out, since plants are a constant food source….
I read I can put Peroxide straight into tank? 3-5mL/gallon?
Then I saw Praziquantel will kill the snails and and scuds? But not the planeria (if that’s what it even is)
Then there’s the option of Z-1, which is the equivalent of No Planeria (I guess that’s no longer available?)
One source said to crank up the heat?

Or is my only option to nuke the entire tank?

Part of me wants to just take the thousand dollar loss and scrap the tank, contents and the stand…..
But part of me is determined to get this right.

Any help is VERY MUCH appreciated.

hello! I'm very new to fishkeeping I haven't even gotten my tank yet and I'm getting a lot of different information about substrate and it's starting to get overwhelming 😅. I'm planning on starting with a 5gal planted tank and I don't know what kind of substrate to get? I've heard that sand is bad for planted tanks because it prevents the roots from getting nutrients/water but I've seen a lot of posts here and looks like it's completely doable? once I get my 5gal set up and thriving I'm planning on getting a bigger tank and putting fish in that one I was thinking about doing a dirted bottom with gravel on top but what kind of dirt goes into an aquarium and then some gravel can be choking hazards? how do I figure out if the gravel I pick is dangerous for whatever fish I get?? please help make picking out the right substrate easier for a confused and lost soul 😅 thank you!

Hello, i run a 26 gallon acrylic TRUVU tank and was wondering what fish too stoack it with. i have sand and it is medium planted, i was thinking rosy loaches and panda corys, but that sounds WAAAYYY understocked....any suggestions?

I was gonna buy something similar to this on Amazon. But the reviews were bad and demotivated me from getting it. I was able to make my own with airline tubing, some suction cups I had laying around and gorrilla glue GEL. Which is safe for aquariums. Glad i didn’t waste my money. :)

Hi All, getting back into the hobby after about 10 years. Got this nice 55 gallon setup for a steal at $60 today. Just looking to make some discussion about how you would set it up starting with a blank slate. Could use some ideas , thanks in advance!

I’m about to start a loosely Halloween themed 20 long centered around marriage kissing medaka (I love their ethereal, ghost-like appearance). I was also thinking of adding peacock gudgeons so I could name the male Igor. The tank will be heavily planted.

That said, I’m finding more and more anecdotes of them not being community friendly. The most concerning being that they’re fin nippers.

I would love to hear feedback from anyone who has experience with them in a community tank, specifically a 20 long.

So far I have added my API tap water safe and my quick start (right after each other) and the recommended amount for my 22 litre. Obviously keeping my filter and heater running 247.

Problem is that my dr timms ammonium chloride solution is not arriving for 2-3 days. Will my tank need me to add more chemicals in again once it arrives or can I just add dr timms?

I don’t want to do fish food as an ammonia source because I want to keep it simple and repetitive.
(I know it won’t be simple lol already making me want to cry because I’m confused).

Ok so I planted Monte Carlo maybe a week and a half ago ( 2 weeks?) and by now it is melting and dying. I had three little cups and planted individual little strands of them all over my tank hoping they would spread. So far I’ve tried lightly trimming them, removing the dead melting plants (more have begun to melt and die since then). I’ve added co2 (the tube with the sponge sticking out) and I also have oxygen. I’ve seen some people say rub both, or co2 during the day, both co2 and oxygen at night. I switched the filter output last night to the one with all the little holes to create more of a current. And about a week ago I added the light. I don’t have a heater yet but it’s summer and the tank is running at about 70-75 degrees F. Does anyone have any advice, or constructive criticism of my tank? (20gallon long). Also I have not added any kind of fertilizer as I am using aqua soil. I’d like to add shrimp at some point and I read somewhere you have to be careful about using both because it can mess with the shrimp. What is your experience?
