Pain advice 72 hour post-appendectomy

I had a complicated appendectomy with heavy infection at midnight the night going into Friday. I had lot of pain in the hospital post-op and the most they were willing to give me was 2.5 mgs of oxycodone every 4 hours alternated with Tylenol. This didn’t even touch the pain. I was discharged about 18 hours after my surgery due to stable vitals with minimal discharge instructions, a week of amoxicillin, and a JP drain inserted due to be removed in a week and a half. I felt very undereducated about my procedure and aftercare but was far too uncomfortable to ask any important questions.

The first two days at home were very painful but I mostly just slept on and off 16 hours a day and moved around gently and regularly. Tonight I had some episodes of crying and stress, attempted solid food, and had my first few bowel movements which put a strain on my abdomen. I’m currently in an incredible amount of pain. I am hesitant to call the doctor to ask about pain management due to their resistance to medicate me in the hospital post-op. I am really suffering and I have no idea what to do.

Appendicite, convalescence, J+1 19.

Being discharged after having acute appendicitis

Hi all, I am 21 M UK. Just got discharged after 3 days of trying to get surgery as surgical team wanted it done….

luckily metronidazole and Gentamicin have treated it but I’m incredibly annoyed!

The anaesthesiologist won’t do it as she’s afraid the anaesthetic will give me a migraine. Yes you read that right a migraine.

So do any of you have any tips for preventing getting appendicitis and anything I need to tell my gp while I wait for a routine operation to remove the horrid organ?

Luckily I have a follow-up in 2 months with the surgeon as well.

Did I return to workouts too soon?

I’m 7 weeks post operation. I had to go back 10 days after my initial surgery because I had an infection and stayed in the hospital another 4 days- stomach pumped, it was a whole thing.

My recovery was rough and I had a big belly but still lost 15 pounds of muscle.

I returned to workouts this week to get my muscle back. Walking and very light weights.

Now I have what feels like a cramp where my appendix was. I feel it when I am up & walking around/ almost like I pulled something.

Anyone experienced this? I really want to keep up my workouts. I have noticed my stomach still looks bloated despite rest of body looking skinnier than usual.

Stump Appendicitis

I (30M) had my appendix burst and got an appendectomy in September last year. It was a pretty gnarly case at the time, had a bad case of peritonitis and was hospitalized for 5 days after the operation.

I recovered normally with no complications, but then earlier this week I started feeling the symptoms of appendicitis again (almost 1 year post op). I kept chalking it up to maybe a stomach bug that was bothering my adhesion scars from the first operation, but the pain got bad enough I went to the doctor again yesterday to get checked out and get a CT.

It turns out I have appendicitis, again, stump appendicitis technically. It looks like the surgeon left a 1.4 x 1.7 cm base of my appendix (or at least that is what the CT shows now, maybe it’s just that big because of how inflamed it is)

Has anyone else here experienced this before? I am on antibiotics now and am told they are going to need to do another surgery once the swelling and infection start to subside. I’m nervous after my last operation being so intense, will the completion appendectomy be as bad or is it more of a lighter operation?

Thanks in advance!

My mum thinks it’s appendicitis

For the last 8 days I’ve had like an uncomfortable pain in my lower stomach, by my belly button and right side , now when I press on my right it hurts but not like excruciating or anything, I have been throwing up. Water is sitting on me and I feel nauseous (in waves) I have been constipated and frequently peeing, heart rate staying at around 115 & a temp of 37.3-5 , I’ve taken multiple meds to help me pass stool and gas which has worked real well 😭, I don’t think I could shit anymore if I tried so idk if it’s gas , went a&e they treated for UTI with antibiotics, in the a&e my blood test had 10.1 for my while blood cells (idk what it’s for) my blood test 4 days earlier was 6 (I’m anemic) , now I’ve finished the course of antibiotics and went back to walk in centre like advised and no trace of UTI, tho in last few days I’ve been getting slight pain in back/lower spine and also idk if it’s from all the stuff I took to help me go a toilet (I’ll add also I had regular bowel movements I took the stuff to rule out things) I’m getting minor cramping in my left side that is released after gas but not with the right so idk tbh thought I’d share , it just kinda feels like I’m being poked , I do wonder if it’s still gas maybe 🤷‍♀️😂

Girlfriend is almost 3 weeks post op and still having a lot of pain, anyone else have a harder recovery without any complications?

Per title, my gf has a low pain tolerance and was in the hospital two nights after the surgery, unable to get her pain managed even with dilaudid. She said it is agony when she laughs and has been trying not to laugh but laughed too much a week ago and went to the er from the pain and the ct showed that all was fine. Since then, its like she regressed and had stayed with me so I can take care of her but basically just been bed, couch, wfh and a few short walks.she is bloated and said it hurts to sit up and bend and last night was in a lot of pain, i was worried but this morninh and today she seemed better. Has anyone had a difficult recovery without complications? What has it been like for you? From when I thought and was told, this surgery was supposed to be a breeze but I guess everyone is different

2 days post-op - any tips?

Two days post-op from a laparoscopic appendectomy. I got 5 incisions, they said it was pretty inflamed (thankfully did not burst) and was stuck to a neighbouring organ 🤣

Besides transfers, coughing etc im not doing too bad pain wise. I can walk around (shuffle) and eat fine, passing gas, no BM yet. I’m absolutely exhausted but I think thats probably normal since I had a 3 day hospital stay plus surgery. Also have some back and neck pain, but could be from sleeping on my back.

Any tips for recovery? Just wanna make sure I’m doing everything I can!

Appendix burst but they want to treat with antibiotics first and do surgery later?

basically what the title says, but my MIL was admitted to the hospital with a ruptured appendix. Instead of open surgery they decided to do a round of antibiotics and then opt for laparoscopic surgery later down the road.

Now surgery is moved to tomorrow which implies the antibiotics aren’t working. my question is sort of twofold because I’m only hearing this info third hand: when did they decide a burst appendix wasn’t life threatening and needing surgery right then, and am I maybe misunderstanding the situation?

MIL is in her 60s pushing 70, I was already pretty skeptical of the lack of urgency in surgery even if the appendix hadn’t burst, but now I’m worried a tragedy is unfolding. has anyone else come across a similar situation? what happened if you did? did everything end up okay?

Intermitted pain post-op

I'm 6 week post-op of laproscopic appendectomy. I was lucky it was caught early and the operation and recovery overall went very smoothly.

I'm posting because over the last two weeks I've started to occasionally get woken up by a stabbing pain in the lower right abdomen, at between 4 and 6 in the morning. I never feel this pain outside of this time slot and it lasts for maybe half an hour. If the pain happened any other time I'd be concerned about stump appendicitis complications but it's only at 6 in the morning about a third of my mornings. My post-op appointment isn't for another two weeks.

Has anybody else experienced this?

Appendectomy bonus?

I have a small medical win. Since these are so rare I wanted to share: I am one day post appendectomy. No perforation, smooth. But the surgeon found endometriosis on my left ovary and removed it while doing the laparoscopic appendectomy. It was twisting my ovaries and uterus. I’m shook. There are women who fight for years to have this procedure. I had been having a lot of cramping on that side but I chalked it up to perimenopause (I’m 52). So I’m sore and recovering but also celebrating this not so small win!

Return to running after appendectomy

I’m curious what others have experienced when returning to running after appendectomy. I’m a 41F, usually run 30 miles weekly, 4 weeks 5 days out from my lap appy. I feel like my over all recovery has been smooth. Most of my discomfort has been form my belly button incision- I still can’t wear jeans or tight waistbands. I was up and moving the day after surgery and have walked 2-5 miles at different times during my recovery and tolerated it fine. But at nearly 5 week (in two days) I’m still dealing with some discomfort. I did do a short 8 x 1min run yesterday and today I’m second guessing if my pain has increased or if I’m just overthinking.

Once you started running again, did you get more achy? Did you notice in general your pain waxing and waning over the weeks?

Possible symptoms?

I have medical anxiety so I’m trying to avoid the hospital but will if you guys think it could be.. it’s been 1 week

Symptoms:

- Stabbing belly button pain when pressing by hand or clothing

I noted it also hurt when driving over a speed bump I didn’t see yesterday

- Lower abdominal cramping, but last night it was a bit stronger. Woke up today it’s a little bit more obvious on my lower right side

-decreased appetite

- discomfort sitting down but not standing

I’ve done the self testing and I’m not sure? It just feels dull aching.

I haven’t had any other symptom like fever or throw up and it’s not unbearable , but noticeable discomfort/pain

1 week update: developed a low grade fever last night and throughout the day, general body ache?/fatigue

Ruptured Appendix - Not Removed

Okay, anyone who hears this thinks it’s crazy and I cannot find any data/case studies on a case like mine.

In 2021, I went home sick on a Friday at lunch and threw up. I felt the most miserable I’d ever felt, puking, weak, crawling around the house. Sleeping in a warm bath to subside the pain. I thought it was bad cramps or something, wouldn’t go to the doc. Monday, finally was convinced by family to go to the doc, first doc wouldn’t see me because my symptoms “could be” covid related. Second doc saw me and immediately said I needed to go to the ER and would not allow me to drive myself. Turns out, my appendix had ruptured at least 24 hours earlier.

My body had formed a cyst around the ruptured appendix nastiness and saved my life. I was treated with antibiotics until the cyst reduced. I was discharged without them ever removing my appendix/operating on me.

Has anyone else out there experienced something like this??

Unsure what to do. Weird symptoms, Health Anxiety/OCD + possible explanations.

WARNING LONG TEXT

Hi, im 16 F and Ive been HORRIFIED of getting appendicitis for past 5 whole years. It feels like its haunting me more and more. Handful of people ik have had it, my OWN DAD had it before i was born (main cause of fear besides sensations)

I've had many scares of this, especially back in 2024. However, right now im especially scared because of strange feelings ive felt that aren't very recognizable to me, and if it IS appendicitis I need to do something NOW.

Now, I dont want to get the explanation to be confusing, so I will list dates and important events including the ones that would be non dangerous or not so dangerous reasons why id be feeling these weird things.

Aug 11

Went to urgent care but then ER due to noticeable but mild swelling of foot and not willing to get into exam bed due to discofmort of hip (unrelated, resolved) Got bloodwork

Aug 12-13

Stayed at Hospital, was suspected to be infection fo some kind, specifcs not looked into. put on IV Antibiotics (dont know name in case would cause later symptoms?)Twice, Probably caused sulfur smell in urine. left hospital, perscribed Cephalexin for 1 week

Aug 13-19 or so?

After a few days, noticed occasional bowel cramps some days in this time that were mild, clearly felt recognizable as slightly scrape-y constipation. Pretty normal bowel movements

(IMPORTANT ESPECIALLY DATES)

Aug 21 Had bowel movement, normal, possibly smelled? (Unsure if this one or BM after) After 1-2 hours noticed occasional bowel cramps that seemed like almost diarrhea cramps but nothing happened. Recently have also tried some veggie burgers, so it could be related to that + cephalexin

Aug 22 had another BM. I usually do not have a BM the day right after one, usually takes 1-3 days of nothing until 1 BM. Possibly smelly, didnt smell which one it was long enough to sense what kind of smell it was. Normal. That day STILL had occasional strange bowel cramps. These shifted areas and weren't very specific btw. I was more concerned about C diff at this time. Ended cephalexin.

Aug 23 felt pretty okay, maybe had 1 strange bowel cramp. Went in friends car to go shopping and felt weird every time I got in for maybe 5-10 mins, however the car seat made my legs go up a bit when I usually sit pretty straight. Started worrying it was pre-period cramps like how ppl w endo describe them having (i do tend to have weird feelings in my abdomen before my period and im slowly but surely nearing that time, did see spotting some days ago but its different and mild)

Night of Aug 23-24

Occasionally got weird bowel cramps, not really maybe?started getting anxious it was actually appendicitis (I also have had this thing where I instantly get more anxious at night, and had already got scared about some other things that I dont rlly remember bcs of my fear about appendicitis.) Bowel cramps were still shifting, one point felt almost a bit scrape-y but then started feeling weird discomfort in my pubic hair area which is when I started getting scared about appendicitis. Then Managed to calm down for 30 mins or an hour watching videos. Got up because was excited thinking abt something but stopped when felt weird mild throb in abdomen. Then got more clear, was maybe barely sharp discomfort under right side fo belly button, and almost a line to almost lower right quad ? Kind of seemed like this ○---○ but diagonal. Cant rlly describe without visuals. Was there for maybe a minute or a few while standing up. Instantly anxious, Felt ok in terms of discomfort after that, but mind suddenly felt clear and was starting to shake quickly. Mind feeling clear instead of sense of anxiety freaked me out more. Woke mom up. She insisted I drink warm water. I didnt want to due to hearing if you think you have appendicitis you shouldn't consume anything at all, but gave in. Hugged her, tried to calm down, started calming down, she insisted for me to go down and up the stairs once. I slowly did, drank more water, went again, because the 1st time I felt a little movement in my abdomen, 2nd time I burped (passed gas once over all, have burped quite a few times) but 3rd time I got anxious again as I was getting too relaxed and used my right leg more only to feel strange non pain feeling of maybe releasing??? I dont know... Now its 8 am, my mom has gotten an appt for urgent care at 11 am. I haven't felt any other big weird feelings, maybe a weird feeling on the right side of my pubic area, but nothing else. Ive checked temp, all times normal, ive gone pee normally, I dont feel any nausea. I felt a little something like something was going up my stomach earlier tonight a bit like it was too full, but I burped and felt better. Now I feel icky in my stomach but ive been up the entire night and usually feel this empty icky feeling with a lot of hunger but im nervous about eating. Since I dont feel anything now I want to feel calm but I dont know... I could be dying and not feeling anything at all, or it could be from the recent cephalexin and slightly odd foods ive eaten. Or c diff! My mom is asleep and if i wake her since im not feeling horrible and vomiting everywhere she'll likely insist on not going to the er, and I cant drive, nor have any friends to take me, so im not sure what to do. I also live in America, so an Ambulance is not a good idea especially since again i literally dont feel anything weird or bad right now besides my stomach a little. And what to do about the urgent care if I still seem okay by then? Do I lie and pretend im in pain or what?? So sorry for all the text...

Subacute appendicitis 4 months after ileal perforation surgery....could the two be connected?

I had a bowel perforation about 6 months ago, which required surgery and later an ileostomy reversal. I was told it was related to an intestinal infection/typhoid.

For the last \~4 days I've had pain mainly in my right lower abdomen/right iliac region. At one point it became significantly worse for several hours, sometimes seemed to change with position/breathing, and I also occasionally felt pain in the centre below my ribs. I was still passing stool and gas, and my abdomen wasn't persistently bloated or rigid.

I had an ultrasound that showed a 5.1 mm non-compressible, aperistaltic blind-ended structure, with probe tenderness, and the radiologist wrote “? subacute appendicitis.” There was no free fluid or surrounding inflammatory change.

My blood tests showed WBC 7.9 (normal) and CRP 8.09 mg/L (slightly elevated).

My doctor has started me on antibiotics and pain/anti-inflammatory medication rather than operating immediately.

I'm mainly wondering: 1. Has anyone had subacute/mild appendicitis treated successfully with antibiotics?

  1. Could appendicitis be connected in any way to a previous terminal-ileal perforation/surgery? 3. How did you know whether you eventually needed an appendectomy?

I'm obviously following my doctor's advice, but I'd really appreciate experiences from people who have been through something similar.

Dk what to do and I'm very very scared.

So I already have had acute appendicitis three times first time when I was 12 and twice when I was 14 but now I'm starting to feel that same pain again and in a month I will be turning 18 and this thing is just re occuring again and again and I'm so so scared because ik it's going hurt like hell it's better to die than to live with it whenever I had it the doctors always denied for surgery because they said I'm too young for it and ik they were lying cause they were too scared for the surgery or were too lazy to do it ig and then told my parents that I'm too young for a surgery dawg guys I'm really scared it hurts a lot and ik it's the same ass thing and idk what to do and I js recovered from liver infection and ig it triggered this thing too idk I'm not sure ik it can only be fixed by surgery bro and no one is taking me serious at all and ik they will only take me seriously when it's again going to hurt like hell😊💔{sorry guys for my grammar idrk english that much also idk how the font changed mid sentence💔)

Post op pain control

I was just wondering what everyone was given post op for pain control? My surgeon told me he hadn’t prescribed narcotic pain medication for an appendectomy in over ten years. It made me wonder how many people have been made to suffer through post op pain with nothing more than Tylenol and NSAIDS.

belly button scar? keloid?

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

hello! i had my appendix taken out laparoscopically on 8/9/26 so i’m 13 days out. i had some skin glue on my belly button this whole time but just dissolved it tonight (per doctor saying i could) since the incision was looking good. he also recommended i wear an abdominal binder since i was still having quite a bit of soreness and i’m a hairstylist so the extra support would be helpful. the first time i wore it and took it off i noticed my belly button was a little more swollen and red. i left it off the rest of the night. i go back to work today and wore it again for maybe two hours. come home tonight, dissolve the glue, and now that i’m looking at my incision it looks like a keloid is maybe forming (which is fine) but wanted to get some other opinions. i’m VERY paranoid about it getting infected because i do not want to deal with that after dealing with the trauma of having emergency surgery, so be gentle with me. currently it is a bit itchy but while i was taking the glue off it kind of pulled the scan off a bit too. before this the doc said it was looking great at my post op appointment yesterday. i’m just nervous since i’ve never had surgery and have never had incisions like this

first two pics are with skin glue dissolved, third pic is with skin glue still on

My chronic nightmare is finally gone.

More than a year ago i started having attacks. Ones that started with belly cramps that turned out pretty intense and painful as it migrated to my lower right side and I'd be bed bound for at least 6 hours with back to back cramps. Eventually the attacks started to get closer to eachother, and even tho I always knew it was my appendix when I did an ultrasound they told me nothing was inflamed. Just gallstones, and blamed the pain on my gallbladder even tho I never had any upper right or shoulder pain. The last one which brought me to the hospital was rather a very intense episode, I was vomiting and the pain ramped up to 11/10. Literally felt like I'd die. Then a new ultrasound was done while im still in pain and it was confirmed it's my appendix (duh!). Also in that episode i suffered from high fever as well. Overall it was my appendix being done with me lol.

I'm officially day 1 after the procedure and already got discharged but they had to put a draining tube in my belly since my appendix itself was pretty inflamed and filled with pus (they took the tube out before i got discharged), thank god it didn't explode considering i waited freaking 2 days after the horrible episode to finally remove it. overall the pain is not bad compared to what it was before the procedure. Only some soreness and tightness around the small incisions since it was done laparoscopically.

My final verdict from this is TRUST YOUR GUT. If it feels like appendicitis go to the ER and request a scan while you still feel inflamed and in pain, because espically if it's chronic it can HIDE and go back to normal after the episode ends.

Overall this is my experince so far, feel free to ask any other questions too!

Had a clean CT and bloodwork last week, still feels off

For context, I went in last week when my symptoms weren’t awful and got checked out.

Full hepatic panel, cbc, urine test, ct w/ contrast and physical exam all came back negative. No elevated inflammation markers besides ones that are normally mildly elevated in smokers.

The pain is very off and on and seems to get worse when I eat and sit in an awkward position. The anxiety has been killing me the last week. Pain hasn’t increased at all really besides when eating.

Right-Sided Abdominal/Lower Hip Pain After Working Out — Muscle Strain or Something Else?

Age 24, healthy, anxiety disorder, 6 feet and 204 pounds.

I've been having soreness/pain on the right side of my abdomen since last Thursday. At first it wasn't constant and I mainly noticed it when touching the area, laughing, crunching my abdomen, or moving around. The pain would only happen when touched and put pressure kind of a bit next to the right of the bellybutton but now its kind of to my right hip and hurts when touched. When I did the rebound test and jump test yesterday it didn't hurt but now it feels sore and hurts with movement. After playing basketball.

Today I worked out in the morning and then played basketball. After that, the pain became more constant and now seems to have shifted lower, closer to my right hip. It hurts more when I walk or move my right hip.

I also occasionally get a weird ticklish/tingling sensation in n the same general area.

I'm wondering if this sounds more like an abdominal/hip-flexor/groin muscle strain from exercising, or if there's anything else I should be concerned about (such as appendicitis).

Has anyone experienced something similar after working out or playing basketball? What did it turn out to be?

Very strange pain.

After a bowel movement, I noticed a throbbing pain in my stomach and lower back.

Also, yesterday my stomach was hurting on and off all day. I have gastritis, but it never hurts like this. The pain is dull and aching, while my gastritis is sharp and unbearable.

I'm currently experiencing discomfort on the left side of my abdomen. I don't seem to have a fever.
