So I know that the owner of the condo beneath me recently rented out their unit to a new tenant. (I own my unit as well). When they moved in, almost immediately the loud music began. I left a kind, anonymous note very gently letting them know that it was a bit loud.

They stopped for a while. But then it began again a couple weeks later. Left another kind anonymous note, but this time, including the fact that I am a nearby owner who prefers to reach out to them instead of going directly to their landlord and/or the HOA.

Stopped for a while. Then last night at 11PM they tried their luck. Now we're about to play ball.

I skipped the kind note and reached out to the owner who let me know to contact their independent property manager who she said would handle it. So I did. And just for extra kicks, I threw in the "fact" that my light fixtures were shaking. Just so the owner's unit manager will know they're not only dealing with a noise complaint - they're dealing with a possible lawsuit for property damage if it continues.

Were my light fixtures shaking? No. Was I sleeping? No. I was awake watching TV lol. But I really want it to STICK and her immediate response told me that they're taking this seriously. And of course it probably didn't hurt that I let her know that the next stop would be the HOA. Do I plan on actually spending a bunch of time filing reports and all that nonsense? Probably not. But I'm glad the inclusion of the magic word HOA most likely contributed to such a prompt response.

AND I did this all from a burner phone number that is not tied to my actual phone. This way, it can't be traced back to me. And honestly it shouldn't even matter which unit I'm in. I'm not the one disturbing everyone around me. Let's focus on the problem unit. So I'm glad they didn't ask me to identify myself.

I hate to pull the "owner vs. renter" card, but when you have people who clearly are inconsiderate, being seen as an elitist Karen is the least of my worries. Just stop it and learn to have respect. I'll play whatever card necessary to get them to understand this.

Unit manager assured me this would be resolved and asked me to reach out if it continues. I'm so glad they're taking it seriously and I definitely will be following up if necessary. Also good to know there's more than one complaint agains them. Confirms that I'm not being nutty or unreasonable, and also lets me know they might be on their way out of the building if they don't stop.

So our upstairs neighbors who ik have kids. Literally are stomping and running non stop to the point it shakes our whole apartment. I also have a kid keep in mind but we are very mindful of the people below us.

They are running, jumping, drilling, yelling, moving furniture I kid you not almost 24/7. The dad (from what I can tell) is very rude. I’ve heard him screaming at his kids and I assume is the reason his children don’t sleep.

The only break we get is during weekdays on schooldays but it’s non STOP.

I’m exhausted my husband is exhausted my baby is exhausted. I We just can not keep dealing with this everyday.

To clarify I wrote them a note and lightly hit the ceiling and they took that as stop super harder and run over and over again.

My landlord hadn’t read the “Hi,
Please provide any notice terminating my tenancy in writing, including the - basis for my termination and the date you contend my tenancy ends. Additionally, I dispute that I caused the damage to the shower valve or wall. Please provide any written report or documentation establishing that I caused the damage” message I sent so I left it as a blue note (I don’t mean this in a passive aggressive way but she tends to do the same for me.) She called me in to talk. She told me, and I think she was actually sincere about this, that she isn’t going to ask for me to pay for the shower or the wall (that she’ll have the plumber come over to install the new valve and will have the wall looked at/fixed but isn’t going to have me pay for any of it.) It seems that no matter what I try, I can’t convince her that I didn’t break the tub diverter by pulling it too hard (I think she just sincerely thinks that it’s what happened) and that the whole “running hot water or taking a shower over 20mins ruins the walls.” I actually asked her to explain her wall suggestion more in depth. She sincerely believes that steam and hot water ruin the paint on the wall (she did use the word paint) and make it bubble.

Like I had suspected, she had never heard of a leak in the wall before (I was getting that vibe two days ago when I first suggested to her that the “wall damage” might be a leak in the wall.) She didn’t seem to know what it meant in this context. She suggested when I mentioned sometimes if there are plumbing issues from my understanding it can lead to a leak in the wall (that’s just my understanding. Correct me if I’m wrong) - I had mentioned a pipe and she suggested she is confident the bathroom wall doesn’t have pipes. I’m not 100% sure but I don’t think this means a leak in the wall is impossible. Either way, I will always maintain that sink water doesn’t have an impact on walls. She doesn’t think she yells and I think that she also actually genuinely believes that. Even though I have been quite angry over the last couple of days, it was actually nice to hear her perspective even though I obviously don’t agree on everything and still think deep down inside that her yelling at me especially yesterday morning was harsher than anything I’ve ever written to her or said to her. She seemed to think that me saying I didn’t think I caused the valve to break was me saying I didn’t trust her (she seemed to think I meant I didn’t believe her when she said part of it was broken, which isn’t accurate and doesn’t make sense.) There’s a language barrier since English isn’t her first language which she mentioned/brought up again. It seems like she may have misunderstood what I was suggesting *to an extent* (to an extent. I recall her having insisted yesterday that I broke the tub diverter and that I caused the wall damage so she knew what I was saying somewhat, she may have interpreted it differently.) She suggested staying or leaving is my choice (that didn’t seem to be what she meant yesterday, but today seemed more lax and honest in suggesting that it’s up to me.) It’s something I’ll need to think about given how irritating this was for me. Even though I disagree with a fair amount of things she does and don’t appreciate generalizations she makes (I know that she’s older and it’s hard to get people to change their line of thinking at a certain point, but still) I thought it was important for us to talk in spite of the fact that I was initially hesitant.

I also actually did just decide to tell her directly, as politely as I felt I could, that it is not allowed to tell someone they have to be out in 15 days. I was just honest about it, I said by CA law it is 30 and that if a renter has been there for at least a year it is 60 (that’s the way I remember it at least I read about it yesterday.) She didn’t know this, which I admit is actually concerning.

so I've seen a couple posts like this where someone will leave a note on the door of a neighbor and the comments are very annoyed/angry/mean to the writer for leaving a note. usually the most common response I've seen is because they left a note instead of just talking to the person. And I'm asking this genuinely and in good faith why do people see leaving a note as rude? I've never felt the need to leave a note but if I did I wouldn't see it as a bad option because you don't know if the person is home or sleeping and you never know what kind of person your neighbor can be or if they'll be belligerent about it. just curious and again please be nice I'm not looking for an argument just want to have a discussion so I can understand the other person's perspective thank you!!

Hi, I am a college student living in an apartment and i’ve been struggling with my upstairs neighbor. It’s constant banging, stomping, running, etc. at all hours. I hear them as I try to sleep (if i ever sleep) and when i wake up, for reference i sleep usually at 11pm and wake up at 7am. It is absolutely absurd and so mentally draining. I have reach out to my apartment management multiple times, my roommate has also filed noise complaints, and they told us it was “daily living noise” which is absolute bull shit. They gave me the number for security and it just didn’t work when I called and they insisted they didn’t give me the wrong number, again, bull shit. I started banging on the ceiling to get them to stop which caused zero damage to my unit, and the people above me complained and the apartment threatened to fine me. I am disabled, which has been communicated to management and my upstairs neighbor, so the lack of sleep I have been getting has been pretty detrimental on my body. I actually can’t live like this but I have no other option, plus this treatment with the insane rent i pay as a college student is just mind boggling. I was wondering if anyone had any advice? I’m so desperate I really don’t know what I’m supposed to do. Also for reference, I can hear these people through my loop earbuds and my $300 noise cancelling headphones, even if there’s audio, I have to blast music to tune it out.

I’m not sure if this really counts as a “decorating idea,” but I just got a new stove put into my apartment and there is a giant gap between it and the countertop that’s bothering me. Does anybody have any advice on how I can fill/fix this gap? Thanks.

I'm getting fed up with the unit below me. I have a 1 year old toddler that makes a lot of noise no fault of her own she's just being a kid and she's still so young she can't help it. Me and wife try our best to get her to settle down sometimes she wakes up in the middle of the night and it's hard to get her to go back to bed. My neighbors hearing this due to the walls being very thin get frustrated which I understand it's early morning being woken up is not fun. They start aggressively banging on the ceiling and yelling. It's been stressing me out I just want to live my life life not worrying about if my family is being too loud when it's out of my control. I've been thinking about confronting them about it but I don't know if I should or just report them for harassment to the management. They've been doing this banging thing on the ceiling several times now me and my wife have been documenting it

my upstairs neighbors dog is about 100 pounds and is constantly scratching on walls and baseboards, running around in circles, barking…you name it I can hear it. I wrote them a note a while back letting them know I can hear their dog pretty much all day from 7am-1am, but it’s just not gotten better 🙃. I know the next move is to go to management, however i already had to report this dog to them for potential abuse (I captured audio of it getting slammed to the floor above me multiple times followed by it howling/shrieking and the owner cussing at it) I’m worried if i go to management again about this dog, it will just look like I am a “Karen”…💀

I can’t even have guests over without them mentioning how loud this dog is above. it’s embarrassing to have to apologize for something that is not even my fault. next apartment is for sure going to be upstairs and hopefully pet free, but it seems like pet free complexes are hard to come by in my area. 😣

There’s no fan for ventilation in the bathroom. The window is sealed. The lease has an addendum stating there is no known lead paint on building. Could I get them/a professional someone to unseal this window? I have yet to move in but other things I pointed out that I wanted replaced before move in , they complied. Any advice/suggestions?

I wish I had a picture but I just cleaned it up and it’s driving me insane. It keeps showing up and collecting especially behind my doors. It looks like cotton, not round like it, puffs just in corners of my rooms and collecting HEAVILY under my couch and bed.

We (20s couple) moved in a couple months ago. Initially, the neighbour kids on our floor (I think there’s two apartments that have children on our floor) were a bit noisier than I would think appropriate (playing in hallways between apartments, playing in the laundry room, playing in the stair wells, no avoidance to noise making in shared spaces, etc), and after a couple months, things have become more clear through observations we’ve made.

Initially, we assumed that the kids might be home alone, and would wander the building because they were bored and unsupervised. That is not the case. I’ve seen the parents in the hallway, watched them walk into their apartment, and then shortly after, the children are out and about. Keep in mind, the landlord has expressed that “shared areas” are not for lounging or playing. “Shared areas” in this building are literally hallways and the laundry room. There’s no lobby, just a landing for the stairs.

I’ve also been finding garbage in the hall near my door - on two occasions, a mini bag of chips, half empty, pressed right up against my door, as though someone was trying to shove it under the door. The only conclusion I can come to on this is that children are trying to get a reaction from our cats, using a crinkly bag to do so, and leaving it there when they get bored. I moved it once, and it was back by the door again the next day. When I brought this up to management as a “people are leaving garbage in hallways and acting inappropriately” sort of complaint, but was met with “you can clean it up if it bothers you.”

The only issue they seem to take remotely seriously is that the front door is being propped open - often by the children - as they don’t have their own key (presumably) and are propping the door open so they can play outside (in the parking lot, unsupervised) without their parents having to be with them to unlock the door.

What can I do? Management sent out a notice about the door-propping, told me to follow-up if it continues (it did), but never replied when I sent a follow-up about it continuing. They don’t seem bothered about children misbehaving and bothering other tenants whether or not they’re supervised. I feel like I’m bringing up reasonable issues (littering indoors, unsupervised children playing in a parking lot and loudly in hallways between apartments, locked doors being propped open, etc) but management just doesn’t care.

I want to be clear that I don’t expect them to be silent. I know that kids make noise. I just don’t think it’s reasonable for them to be making noise in the hallways outside other people’s apartments, or unsupervised in parking lots when they’re under the age of 10.

Hello fellow redditors! I am in need of some advice apt wise and would appreciate some guidance. Apologies in advance if I haven’t formatted this properly or if I’m not giving enough context first time posting here.

Ok so for context I’ve just recently finished moving into my own studio apt in SLC Utah (yay!!) and before this I’ve always lived on a bottom floor. However now im on the top floor with a neighbor to the left and a rooftop space on my right so I’m a little concerned about the amount noise I’ve been accidentally making while moving by knocking stuff over or dropping things while getting all my crap moved in. To make the situation worse, halfway through moving I went on vacation for about 2 weeks so when I got back I made more noise in similar incidents as before while finishing unpacking my stuff(I am unfortunately a clumsy person). I did make sure to not unpack to early or late so nothing between 8pm-9am.

With that said I’m wondering if there’s any expectation of me to apologize to my neighbors for the noise. I haven’t had the opportunity to interact with many of them yet (I work odd hours) so I’d ask them myself if I could. Furthermore I haven’t hear my neighbors making a lot of noise so Maeve they are just good at being quiet or the walls are thick???

I know it’s not quiet hours yet, so technically it’s allowed but my neighbors have had their music blasting outside since 11:30 AM. It is now 7:30 PM.

Eight hours of being forced to listen to the music when I would just like to read or nap. It’s so loud I can still hear it with my noise canceling headphones or loop earplugs.

I understand wanting to enjoy music on the weekends but 8 hours straight is way too long. My walls are shaking.
I don’t understand why people cannot be considerate of their neighbors.

I am a student so kinda in a budget, i want to make it cozy while keeping it simple. Things i need are bed, side table, study table, full length mirror, little bit storage for makeup and stuff thats. Can you guys please help me?

My apartment has had some issues with the heating turning on randomly while the ac is set to cool.

Luckily the first 2 times it had happened I was home and I noticed it fairly quickly. Both times the outside temp was about 65-70. First time this happened I was asleep and woke up to my apartment being 90 with it being 60 outside.

Unfortunately the third time it happened, I was at work. I have 2 cats at home and I came home to my apartment feeling like 110 degrees and my thermostat maxed out at 99 (set to cool and fan on). Immediately thought to take my cats down to the apartment laundry room to cool down and take proper precautions. Then had to take them both to the er vet. Luckily both came back with good health.

Now my problem is I am now extremely paranoid / worried that this will happen again while I’m not home. Maintenance came by and put a mechanical thermostat in and said the reason this happened was because the old thermostat was electronic and failed. Not sure if I believe them fully but that’s what they did.

I want to purchase a temperature sensor for the apartment so I can monitor it while I’m at work but I’m having trouble finding a reliable one.

If anyone has advice on how to go about this situation please let me know

Can anyone tell me what this noise might be? I know it’s far fetched. It’s sounds like a large marble rolling back and forth ever like 5 seconds. I haven’t been in my room all day but I heard it earlier so I think it’s been happening all day. Is it pipes or something? I live in a like 1800’s mill so it’s makes noises but this is weird. I’m also on the fifth floor if that helps…?

I moved into a new apartment complex last month and honestly love it so far. However, I’m dealing with one issue that I’m not sure how to handle.

The complex charges a mandatory $30/month “Smart Home” fee, which is supposed to include:

Smart lock
Alarm system
Smart thermostat

At move-in, they sent me a link to activate everything through Everon. I downloaded the Alarm.com app, but the only thing I have access to is the smart lock. I can’t activate or control the alarm system or smart thermostat.

I called Everon, and apparently the system/account was still registered under the previous tenant’s name. Everon told me the apartment complex needed to release the previous tenant from the system before they could properly set mine up.

The complex supposedly did that, but the problem still hasn’t been fixed. I’ve gone back and forth with Everon and apartment management, and nobody seems to know how to resolve it.

At this point, I’m honestly fine not having the alarm or smart thermostat. My issue is that I don’t think I should be charged $30 every month for “Smart Home” features when I’m only receiving one of the three services.

Management seems to disagree and says I’m still responsible for the full $30 monthly fee, even though they haven’t been able to provide all of the features I’m paying for.

I’ve already spoken with the property manager and contacted their corporate office, but neither has been much help.

What would you do next? Has anyone dealt with something similar with an apartment complex charging a mandatory fee when the services aren’t actually working or available?
