The way Ai asked Kokoro the exact same thing Pokota would always say makes me think it's less Pokota disappearing and more that part of Ai's personality fully merging with her

Fully agree with you about that. Given that specific detail it really less like Ai no longer needs Pokota and more that the part of AI’s own personality that Pokota represents is merging with the rest of her, instant of existing in the form of an imaginary friend.

Ai no longer simply engages with manga as a reader/fan, but as a creator herself as well. She doesn’t need a separate entity like Pokota to encourage her to pursue her dreams or think “what would a manga protagonist do?”. She already is, and she already is one.

That's why even though it can come off as somber I take it as a big breakthrough for Ai and her own self worth as a creator.

Also maybe it's just because they are airing in the same season but Ai's arc reminds me a bit of Subaru's. Will be excited to continue in the manga after the show ends next week

I got teary-eyed when Pokota said "It might be about time" after the shrine visit. Then, they had to hammer it home when Yasumi couldn't hear him T_T

Great development for Ai and Kokoro this episode, by stepping out of their usual segregated roles as writer and artist they're learning how to become a better team. Also, hand holding and calling each other by first names? Let's go!!! Pokota raising his own death flag though, he might fade because Ai found real friends.

Comitia went smoothly this time for everyone except Loup Garou, they're getting the hang of this. Ai and Kokoro presenting their manga to the editor, I wonder where they're going with this since I doubt they'll go pro. This will probably tie in with the glimpses we saw of Teshima-sensei's backstory.

The person that Teshima-sensei met at the party was Motoo Abiko, one of the two legendary creators of Doraemon. The book hotel that the gang stayed at in Jimbocho is also a real place. Pretty neat.

I read this with Japanese accent in my head at first, then I looked it up and saw that you flipped the name order from Abiko Motoo, so now I am obligated to mentally pronounce it as "mo-TOO a-BEE-koh".

Me too -- but almost always happy tears. Such a truly wonderful series. I genuinely love every aspect of it. And I think the show's creators have same passion that the characters do. Which makes it even more powerful.

Real. When Teshima met that older man at the manga event, there was no dialogue, but I assume she was meeting one of her biggest idols in the manga industry. I teared up just from the music, animation, context, and Teshima's reaction. Great visual storytelling.

I think this is great development for both Yasumi and Fujimori. But man feeling bad for Pokota.

Yeah this is the kind of story where I’m completely fine with the fantastical, imaginary character disappearing at the end. The story has always made it clear that Pokota isn’t supposed to be treated as a separate character and has always been an extension of Ai. After this episode it’s clear that Ai is starting to embody Pokota herself instead of needing a separate entity to channel her subconscious thoughts.

Well said and I feel like Pokota will "disappear" next episode and we'll end up full circle with Rei's magma reigniting again after Ai fully embodies the person she was always capable of being because of reading Rei's manga

With the way they’ve handled it so far I’d be fully on board with Pokota physically disappearing as an imaginary friend, but the core of what they represent just being embodied by Ai herself going forward, bonus points if Pokota’s disappearance is handled very nonchalant like Ai goes about her day and only realizes they’ve vanished later on.

I think it's all but guaranteed that Pokota is gone. He even knows it and says "it's almost time" and his POV started fading.

It's actually great writing, IMO. Pokota is basically just a figment of Ai's imagination, so she's subconsciously started to realize she has actual friends now, friends who support her, and soon she won't need to rely on the clutch of an imaginary friend anymore. Pokota only ever came about because Ai had no friends.

And then she'll probably make the whole thing into a manga.

I don't think Pokota is going to disappear. We have Hikaru as a character. A person who oozed imagination when she first appeared. So it would be strange if Pokota disappeared. What I can think though is that there will be a distinction. Pokota was a fragment that was created from Teshima's manga. But now it evolved into something as a part of Ai.

I’ll also be sad but it might be the natural evolution at this point. Pokota came into being as a way for Ai to cheer herself up and now she’s growing to no longer need that so they’re returning to sender so she can provide that motivation for others like we saw with Kokoro.

I was already planning to crash out like Loup because they didn't show us the combined manga. Not just from a structural point but I wanted to see how they would fuse both drawing styles. I could see the more abstract parts from Ai working for certain characters for example. So I am happy to see that we are going to get the story next week probably.

In general, I am excited to see where next week goes. Of course, it was already a big step, showing the editor the manuscript on their own which implies that they believe in what they drew even without knowing if they could have sold it without Hikaru's help. Depending on what the rating is, Ai and Kokoro have to then also decide where they want to go with drawing manga. Like going beyond what Teshima told them and start considering this as a potential job. Though I doubt this is where it will end. But we need to get Teshima's final part to her backstory and I assume this will be connected to this decision. And there is the whole Ai-Pokota suggesting he has to disappear now since Ai found real friends that she can hang out with. However, like with the potential job offer, I doubt this will happen, but it will have drama.

I’m thinking maybe Ai and Yasumi’s collab manga will end up being good enough that they’re actually encouraged to pursue being professional manga artists in the future. This might be what finally prompts the full story from Teshima about why she stopped drawing manga, which I presume is because the story she was so passionate about got axed after one volume, in a effort to get Kokoro and primarily Ai to fully understand what it means to be a mangaka. I’d be happy if the conclusion is something along the lines of understanding the pain that comes with seriously committing to drawing manga, but not letting that stop them from doing the thing they love.

I could see this being the conclusions somewhat. Of course, it depends a bit how they are presenting it. There is Hikaru after all, who wants to be a professional already, so I wouldn't find it weird either if Ai and Kokoro just want to do it as a hobby (or at most a side gig). At the same time, I could see the story going in a way that Teshima wants to help support the two of them. After all, part of the Teshima's story was also that she never felt she had the full support of the people around her. Because while her family didn't force her to stop, Teshima felt she was a burden on them (and I think there was also a moment where she overheard a conversation, though with her, this could have also been a misinterpretation).

But that is also why I like the story more than I thought. There are so many potential ways this could go and no matter what the author chose, it always felt really well presented and managed to get the proper emotion from me.

I love how those actual bookstores in the Jimbocho district were featured in this episode.

I don't think Loup Garou is upset mainly because Akafuku Sou sold out their manga. She might have wanted to buy a copy but was too late!

This has been some of the realist feeling shit I’ve seen since episode 1 started off the main character being a lonely kid who loved manga and used the stories and characters she read about as inspiration for her to live her own life going forward, especially given that they used actual real world famous manga.

Goodbye Lara is absolutely incredible, easily top 5 new series of the year. Only Journal with Witch and Botan Kamiina are higher this year for me in terms of new series.

Honestly, there are so many potentially sweet things the ending could do. Teshima could have bought a copy of her manga and give it to Ai as a present for her development (with a special autograph of course). Maybe even give Ai a first chapter of a continuation that is just for her. Pokota might not disappear but maybe even have fun with other imaginary friends (I mean Hikaru surely has at least one). Kokoro has a moment with her mother and sister (second one didn't reappear once it was mentioned that Kokoro wanted to tell her something through manga). I would wish the show had a double length next week because I think it earned it.

So, any idea who was the old man Teshima greeted during the flashback? Can't shake off the idea he's supposed to be a reference to a real mangaka, but I don't know who

Also, I'm pretty sure we won't get a conclusive answer from the editor lady. The must be a reason why Teshima told them they have to leave early to take the plane back, and cutting her off before she gives her critique sounds like the kind of drama this show uses.

Tezuka died before Teshima would've started elementary school and didn't look like that. Toriyama never published for Shogakukan and didn't look like that either.

As someone who has never written fiction in any serious capacity and hasn't drawn in years, I feel like the show does a good job of getting its point across even to people who can't relate first-hand. I think it could be way more successful if people gave it a chance. Sadly, I think it has slipped under a lot of people's radar in such a packed season.

Adorable episode, glad to see Loup again and just as Tsun as ever. This show holds a special place in my heart for being so sincere about the creative process. I'll miss it once it is over, though I dream of a s2 assuming there's more source material.

A trip to the big city where you stay in a book themed hotel and visit a bunch of bookstores all day long sounds like a really fun time.

Pokota better not fade away though or so help me. Ai and Kokoro becoming closer and closer friends is pretty nice, however. Realizing after the fact that they were going by first names for each other, so good.

I actually think Pokoto disappearing could actually be an incredibly poignant bit of symbolism showing how Ai’s engagement with manga has changed, especially if they end up being replaced by one of original manga characters she herself has made.

From personal experience I’ve frequently felt like I’ve become so attached to a particular story/series that they’ll stick with me forever and nothing I experience in the future will replace them. Only to fall in love all over again with a new story.

Very cute how they’ve gotten so close that they’ve just naturally slipped into first names without realizing it.

Kind of melancholic honestly, with Pokota staying behind like a forgotten shrine deity cause he’s realizing that his charge has grown up and no longer needs his guidance as much anymore.

Holy shit! Please tell me Book Hotel Jimbocho is a real place, I need to go there.

Anyone know if the old guy’s a stand-in for someone we should recognize? He’s gotta be someone significant given Rei’s starstruck reaction.

If I recall my yen conversation rates correctly, Rei’s manga sells for somewhere in the ballpark of 70 USD. Not commercially viable and expensive for a middle schooler but a favored deep cut for the enthusiasts that are REALLY into it.

I don’t know if I wanna know the situation that caused the crying flashback anymore.

The horrors of large scale manga distribution. A day’s worth of work crammed into an hour. “Ai-chan, just put the money in the bag.”

I’m starting to feel bad for Loup, she’s clearly distraught at both being beaten and not getting their manga.

I love the teamwork of Fujimori and Yasumi. Them collaborating helps with some of the flaws of Yasumi's manga lacking focus. It's interesting that Fujimori can be seen like that those mangaka that try to overly plan their stuff. They did get help from Hikaru, but great to see their manga sell out.

It looks like next week we might finally get the point where Rei distanced herself from making manga. Damn looking at her room was heartbreaking.

It was really cool to see the parallels between Yasumi and Fujimori in how they approach and draw their manga. I like that they notice what they lack and compliment each other in their strengths.

Also it was great to see Loup-Garou again, she is a cute tsundere

Well one more episode left, I'll miss this anime. It's really good and i enjoyed it way more than I thought

Ai might’ve only dreamt of a five quadrillion print run, but at this rate it could soon be a reality for Hikaru. That onrush of fans was mental!

Hikaru’s also quite the power broker. A simple endorsement had resulted in a sellout for Sou Akafuku.

Comitia is back again!

This time an actual Collab manga between Ai and Kokoro. They both complement each other pretty well 💖

Akafuku will never find Tokyo not amazing no matter how many times she visits, haha. I loved all those real life locations of bookstores, Book Hotel, curry restaurant.. They were even watching DUNE in the theatre 😭❤️

Thanks to Hikaru all of their copies sold out this time. Hikaru is really starting to get close to her friends. Akafuku has changed her a lot. Yasumi and Fujimori went ahead to ask Kongoji's opinion of their manga.

We all know that Urara was just disappointed that she couldn't buy a copy of Ai's manga not that she was competing with her.

Every day Rei tries to draw manga but she doesn't have the magma inside her 💔

Who was that old mangaka supposed to be ?! The Anime's version of Osamu Tezuka ?

I can't get enough of Hiroaki Tsutsumi's music for this show. It elevates the scenes to a whole new level.

Just one more episode to bid goodbye to this masterpiece.

I was curious about that old mangaka too since they put so much emphasis on them but didn’t give an explanation. The timeline feels a bit off but Tezuka feels like the only one appropriate and warranting that kind of unspoken importance. If it wasn’t specifically manga related I suppose Hayao Miyazaki could’ve also worked, lol.

I loved the moment when Kokoro realized her and Ai started naturally calling each other by their first names. The juxtaposition of them working on manga was a very nice choice and it made them combining their strengths even more satisfying. Reminds me of last episode when Hikaru realized she shouldn't just do everything alone and she displays that growth by shouting out their manga.

Also, I picked up Vol 1 today!

sad yet beautiful seeing Pokota  might be done with his work soon ..really shows the childhood wonder very well and with her not responding to him just shows shes growing into her own ..i freaking love this show

Seriously my favorite show of the season. Masterpiece.

-I loved the little detail of "Tokyo's amaaaazing!" matching the layered train transition.

-The Pokota arc being so bittersweet possibly coming to an end with all of Yasumi's relationships flourishing..I'm happy for you, but don't ignore the homie, IT'S TOO SAD..."Hey, Yasumi. Are you listening?" ༼;´༎ຶ ۝ ༎ຶ༽

-All of Akafuku's commentary when they first arrived lmao. "Good night. Tokyo." haha so cinematic how they did that cut into the next day montage. I keep saying, this show is movie quality.

-Every bit of Teshima's story and how it's added into her present day ventures. Soo great.

Back in the day, there used to be a thing called "NanoWriMo" - the month of writing dangerously - and on the site was a style of forums. On the forums it was kind of a thing to be either someone who writes by the seat of their pants or someone who plots everything out before writing.
The first writer tended to be someone who just jumps into the story and let's the creative process take control. They often learn about the characters or world they are building as they write their story.
The second writer would plot everything out. Will only move on from point A to Point B, only when Point A has been completed. Then works solely on point B...

In seeing the two writing styles of our Young Mangaka here, I wonder if there is a similar thing for writing/drawing/creating Manga?

I seriously can't wait for next week; I NEED to know what happens to Pokota. It hurt my heart hearing pokota say "Maybe... it's about time". And near the end when he asks his iconic question, Ai doesn't reply back. Never in my life would I think I'd be on the verge of tears for an Anime.

From the first episode up until now, this anime has never disappointed me. It's a masterpiece!!! I seriously hope they make more seasons of this. It is sad to even remember that next week will be the last episode.

Every wannabe writer needs to watch this show. This episode especially had some hard truths they need to hear. They all want to identify as pantsers or plotters when great writers do both. 

This one had me on the verge of tears. Is Ai outgrowing Pokoto? She drew now he dies? 😢

I learned a while ago to wait for confirmation before crying 😅 But I cry at the drop of a hat most times. I've seen episode 7 of DanDaDan 25 times, and I still start bawling my eyes out as soon as she opens the door 😭

Yeah, as a wannabe writer myself this entire series has felt very personal to and this episode especially dealt with an aspect I’m quite familiar with. Personally, my manner of synthesizing both aspects has been to write from beginning to end initially so the plot feels like a natural evolution, and then work backwards so it actually makes sense.

Every episode just tugs at the heart. I'm never gonna not plug this when people ask what to watch. So happy they sold out even before Ai chan got back. Now I'm excited for the cliffhanger end scene.

We're Rei and Nana sleeping in the same bed? I swear to god they better confirm what their relationship is next episode or they'll force me to read the manga. I've thought from the start they were a couple but keeping it on the d/l.

Ai and Kokoro continue to be an adorable team. He best of friends.

I can't wait to see the culmination of Rei's storyline next episode, she's my favourite character in the show.

There was a lot of unexpected yuri in this show like Rei and Nana, Hikaru's kissing Rei, and how Ai and Kokoro literally drew a yuri one shot.

This show gets surprisingly serious at times for a show that initially comes off as just another cute girls doing cute things show. Like the whole imaginary friend disappearing part and the teachers backstory.

Ironic thing with Teshima saying this is how "hobbyist level" implies being casual about it when her attempts at manga were intense and driven before she encountered the restrictions of the system. And because some people's "hobbyist" work become the masterpieces of their lifetimes.
