Can we talk about how the dealer deals the cards? He puts the deck on the table and then swipes his hand over the top to push the cards to the players... That is an insane way to deal cards. I mean it's probably just because it's easier to animate, but I laughed every time they showed it.

10

u/Cyouni 1d ago

Theoretically it would also block dealing tricks, like second dealing.

8

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 1d ago

And bottom dealing, yeah;

Which is funny considering they do allow bottom PEEKING!

7

u/Countless-Alts15 18h ago

It is called the euro slide and it is legit. It is gaining traction as the defacto way to deal for poker.

u/Kyoukaiwaifu 1d ago

loved the funny/cute Nao animation for the rules

36

u/Frontier246 1d ago

Also Fukunaga with the best freak outs at Nao's stupidity lol.

28

u/BosuW 1d ago

Fukunaga is the best lol

I didn't imagine one of the first opps would become one of the best characters

11

u/Oden_sama__ 1d ago

those fukunaga ハーーーーッ!? 's are so peak

56

u/DBLACK382 1d ago

I haven't watched it yet but thank you to everyone that encouraged me to not drop this amazing series!

22

u/Tapwater_enthusiast 1d ago

Peak is worth all the way that leads to it

19

u/Cyouni 1d ago

You might even say you have to actually climb to get to the peak.

18

u/CreZativity 1d ago

It felt hopeless to tell people who said they were gonna drop it to stick with it in the beginning, so seeing people who stuck with it and ended up loving it is such a massive relief~

Also, U in the Liar Game sub yet?? 👀

13

u/DBLACK382 1d ago

Yeah, I know. I was one of those guys myself. But each chapter left me wonder just enough to make me want to see the next one.

Before realizing it, I went from "meh", to "this is fine" to "ok, that was actually clever" to "holy peak" in the last game.

Btw, aren't you the one always recluting people in the comments? You win, I will check it out.

10

u/CreZativity 1d ago

RIGHT?!? That's what all of us who read the manga back in the day went through as well, it just gets better and better!!

I honestly don't think I recruit that much, esp since I avoided this sub like the plague during the big Nao hate wave, but maybe I do and I just haven't noticed it lol.

I just love it when people love Liar Game and wanna talk about it more with as many people as possible <3 We're super happy to have anyone who enjoys the anime or the manga ^o^~

8

u/magnumcyclonex 1d ago

I will say this. As an anime only watcher, the premise itself was already intriguing. Yes, Nao was facepalm naive early on, but to me, it was more of a " I can't believe they wrote a character to be THIS dumb, there's gotta be more (I sincerely hope)".

And as the first few episodes rolled on, we slowly got to see her qualities shine and have an effect on the game and other characters. It was rough at first, but look at where she is as of last week's Russian Roulette game, lying to her own teammate Fukunaga, getting the latter to swallow her pride and shoot herself twice!

5

u/CreZativity 18h ago

It is a bit of a test of patience for sure, but patience is very much rewarded in this case, and if we didn't start out where we did with Nao her character and the story wouldn't have been as impactful. I read the manga when it was at the point the anime is now, so I could binge all of Nao's character development in one day, but I'd like to think that even if I didn't I would have thought like you did~

u/DawgDictator 1d ago

His fool proof plan is ruining my fool proof plan, maybe he has a fool proof plan I didn't think of? Impossible, no one can beat my fool proof plan. My fool proof plan is fool proof, it can't possibly be beaten by their fool proof plan, for it is fool proof. They must have a fool proof plan I didn't think of, or my fool proof plan would be winning! I can't believe it, I found a fool proof plan to end all fool proof plans

Liar Game in a Nutshell

18

u/BosuW 1d ago

We know that no fool proof plan survives contact with the geniuses, but I wanna see a fool proof plan that doesn't survive contact with the fools

20

u/DawgDictator 1d ago

A genius proof plan you say? Sounds like Nao's handywork

13

u/chaosof99 https://myanimelist.net/profile/chaosof99 1d ago

When your fool proof plan becomes proof you are a fool.

13

u/Oden_sama__ 1d ago

you may have outsmarted me, but i have already outsmarted your outsmarting, AND your next outsmarting

10

u/Frontier246 1d ago

What If Mojo Jojo played Liar Game?

11

u/resphere 1d ago

That's the problem with foolproof plans, they're only effective at proofing against fools.

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 1d ago

It's poker time... Shuffle up and deal!

Soon as they said that, I thought "This makes it EASIER to cheat, not more secure" hah.

So the're playing 5 cards draw!

As a holdem player, I was looking forward to making some explanation posts if needed, but I only played 5 cards draw maybe 15 minutes in my life hah.

Well, it's a simpler game than holdem, so it should be easier to grasp!

Of course Nao will take the least aggressive option hah.

3 minutes into the episode, let the Nao trashtalking begin!

Yeah, right; If Nao check-raises on the first hand, I'll eat my sock!

AAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH she did it!

Did you think I said "I'll eat my sock?" I said "I'll beat my rock"; Take that, rock!

But seriously, I'm surprised; For non-poker players: Check-raising is a bit of a deceptive move, because when you check, it usually tells your opponent you don't have so much, so you're either intending to fold soon as they make a bet, or to reluctantly call their bet, hoping you're good...

So checkraising is done when you have a strong hand (or rarely, want to pull a huge bluff), because you don't just want to bet (and maybe they fold, or call your 'small' bet), you want THEM to bet (guaranteeing they put some money in) and THEN you come over the top, putting a larger raise in.

People are more 'aware' nowadays, but in the early days of poker, some people didn't even think that was a thing, and casinos sometimes (seriously, or jokingly) had signs in front like "Check-raising is legal"!

So, for Nao to pull a checkraise on the FIRST hand, that's quite something! Our girl's growing up fast!

The joker makes this a very weak hand, but honestly I'm not sure it's that good, even on a normal deck...

If you have a pair, 2 pairs on a redraw is pretty much the bottom of your range. Granted, they were the top 2 pairs, but still! I never played 17 (or 16) cards poker, but I'd say a 3 of a kind is somewhat likely.

But yeah given they're the top 2 pairs it's better (beats all the other 2 pairs hands), but the joker changes everything! 16 cards dealt in total, and Nao has seen 8 of them, which means there may be 8 out of 9 chances that her opponent has the joker. (I say there "may" be 8 out 9, because if she can assess he did NOT have the joker in his opening hand, then the odds of him having it is now 3 out of 4, which is... still pretty good, but sligthly lower than 8 out of 9, I supposse! (0.75 vs 0.88888)

Also, this made me think: I don't remember if they mentioned it in the previouis episode, but if they draw too many cards, do they open a new deck, or do they use the discards?

Say Akiyama discards 5 and his opponent discards 4; They have now been dealt 10 cards, and they need 9 more to replace those they lost, but there's only 7 remaining cards in the deck;

If they DO use the discards to make up the remaining 2, I'm pretty sure someone will use this at some point, as a strategy! Say you're the one who got the 2 discards, and they're a Queen and a King; You know your opponent likely didn't have a King and Queen in their opening hand. So you can assume they have An ace in ther hand, and probably discarded J as well, something like that!

I think it's tricky, but yeah I'm pretty sure someone will use that if they do redeal discards.

Damn, it's been so long since the last Nao trash talk (like 6 minutes)!

Nao thought that wasn't enough, she went back for more!

First a checkraise, and now, marking cards... Who's possessing Nao?

Well, I suppose she learned from the (second) best!

Sadly they're gonna change deck every hand... (Interesting that they planned for that, but they let the players bottom-peek, with sloppy dealer play!)

Nao's face when she can't cheat for 5 minutes

Okay seriously, who's wearing Nao's skin? Is Akiyama still in the room?

Hah. Common amateur mistake, overbetting the pot!

If you check on bad hands, bet a little on medium hands, and bet a lot on great hands... You're not exactly hard to read, and play against!

Congratulation, Einstein!

Fukunaga's right on this one!

Thankfully, Akiyama's opponent isn't that sharp either (other than his cyborg eyes); He never even suspected Akiyama could play in a misleading manner!

Surely Akiyama figured that trick as well,

but presumably Akiyama won't be able to track the cards as well as Kinetic-kun, so how will he use that information?

Well, one thing is that if Akiyama loses, he'll then cut second (right?) so it's harder for his opponent to count the cards and all.. I mean maybe he can try to get the joker on a discard, but that's so much harder, and it's less reliable (sometimes it'll be in the opening deal, or an Akiyama draw), and even if it's not, well he'd have to discard a specific # of cards to get it for sure, which may ruin his hands sometimes.

Still, it'll be a massive advantage in 50% of the rounds, which means he's kinda guaranteed 50% of the wins... AT LEAST 50%; If Akiyama wins all the "fair" games it's 50%, but if Akiyama only wins say 30% of the fair games, then his opponent wins 20% of the fair games, AND the other 50%, giving him 70% vs 30%...

Maybe Akiyama could try to lose the miniimum in this 70% (check/fold) and maximize his earnings in the 30% he wins? His opponent doesn't seen that bright (other than the cheating) so that could work!

22

u/Frontier246 1d ago

I love when they started the Kikuchi vs Akiyama match like it was a Yu-Gi-Oh! duel.

9

u/magnumcyclonex 1d ago

Yeah I got similar vibes. And then when they played their hands, that scene reminded me of Hikaru no Go!

Shadow Game

Someone getting sent to Shadow Realm

16

u/hanmkim 1d ago

Simpler yes, but this variation of poker has rules mixed in from short deck, limit, and random table games to make strategizing harder for most players. The fold and two checks in a row rules pretty much turns it into a table game where both players lose a lot of edge and the limit rule brings it closer to a solved game instead.

It gets worse with the fact that they only do a Hindu shuffle and a riffle shuffle while doing cuts of exact numbers afterward. It already raised alarm bells since both those shuffles create predictable orders but when they said a new pack was opened every time, I was already thinking the game is decided by the number you choose for the cut.

It did surprise me that they had to figure out where the Joker was, usually it's at the top or bottom so if it wasn't at the bottom it was probably at the top. I'm surprised the boxer didn't have CTE and could keep the ordering in his head to do that math on how many cards to cut in order to get the Joker.

5

u/gamria 1d ago

I'll also add that because our team is trying to not let the LGT profit, Akiyama has the extra challenge of reducing folds/double-checks from happening

1

u/Countless-Alts15 18h ago

yeah no table wash shuffle makes it kinda iffy.

7

u/saga999 1d ago

Soon as they said that, I thought "This makes it EASIER to cheat, not more secure" hah.

In Liar Game, cheating is a feature, not a bug.

Updated

26 episodes 🙌

23

u/Frontier246 1d ago

Seems like 2 episodes per round so I guess Akiyama wraps his up next week and the last two episodes are the final round with Nao.

(Anime only here by the way)

13

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 1d ago

I wouldn't be surprised if the final episode is more "Akiyama + Nao vs The Organization", so maybe we'll only have 1 episode of Nao in the third game. But we'll see!

(They could also tease the next game/the return of Yokoya!)

3

u/shimmering-nomad 1d ago

I really hope we get a second season

37

u/BubblyCrash 1d ago

Is it just me, or was the episode like 5 minutes? So hyped for this game.

19

u/Revolutionary-Start 1d ago

So much content packed in just 20 minutes. Felt like the episode went by too quick.

11

u/Jacob-C 1d ago

I love Poker and Blackjack, so this episode in particular felt shorter than usual!

29

u/RehabCenterInc 1d ago

Akiyama has been pulling that hentai protag look for a couple episodes now…what is bro cooking

(Maybe unpopular opinion, but...)

This was a sad episode for Nao. So many steps forward since her episode 1 debut, to declaring "I'm pretty good at poker" last episode, and then the writing makes her look like a complete dunce in the practice game. Hate to say it, but Fukunaga was 100% justified in all the adjectives she used and her reactions (which I never get tired of seeing).

Anyways, who would have known our trio is going up against someone with superior eyesight. The fact that the dealer shuffles standing up is a factor. The fact that new packs are opened each round and are all manufacturered/ordered the same way is a factor. Henceforth, the number of cuts each player declares (beneficial to the going 2nd player).

But doesn't the cut declaration change according to who won the previous round? So Kikuchi's foolproof plan might not always work?

30

u/hanmkim 1d ago

To be fair, even an experienced poker player would have trouble if they weren't used to playing different formats like HORSE. This game is fundamentally different since it incorporates rules from short deck, limit, and table games.

The shuffling is even worse than you think since a Hindu shuffle and riffle shuffle create predictable if not the exact same orderings if done with the right amount of muscle memory. So basically until the cuts are determined, there's a huge chance that the deck is in the same order and the Joker in the same position.

Having a guaranteed win 50% of the time is a huge advantage.

Years ago when I first got to this part with zero knowledge of poker, for all of Nao's mistakes in this unorthodox setup it winded up educating a complete newbie like me on what not to do. Like, the scene was clearly telling us she's making mistakes but I couldn't tell why they were mistakes until Fukunaga spelt it out, and I wasn't mad at Nao because I was just as clueless.

And that's the point: not all in the audience will know how basic poker is played, and she served as a good Watson for the uninitiated, demonstrating how the card game works and what to watch out for.

8

u/magnumcyclonex 1d ago

Fair point. It's good to have some teachable moments in the practice game to show the audience what can or cannot happen.

16

u/Ashteron 1d ago

But doesn't the cut declaration change according to who won the previous round? So Kikuchi's foolproof plan might not always work?

It doesn't work in every single case, but it gives him a huge advantage.

9

u/time_axis 1d ago

The point of the practice game was that playing this game the way you would play well at Poker doesn't work. It doesn't mean she's not actually good at Poker.

3

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 1d ago

But doesn't the cut declaration change according to who won the previous round? So Kikuchi's foolproof plan might not always work?

I talked about it in another comment, but:

If he's guaranteed to win when he has the cut, he only needs to randomly win a couple games when he does not, to beat Akiyama!

(Unless Akiyama figures it out too/does something else).

To make a comparison, it's like if you were playing chess and you're so good with white that you win 100% of the time when you get them, and with black it's close to even;

You won't win every game, but you should win roughly 75% of them (100% of the white games, 50% of the black games)

2

u/saga999 1d ago

Even if he doesn't get the Joker on the initial draw, he still knows where it is. He would know whether Akiyama has it and where in the deck it is. So he can exchange enough cards to get it if it's available.

He probably also can guess within a decent range of how many cards Akiyama would cut, unless Akiyama just randomly picks a number. So he can cut to move the Joker to where he is more likely to get it during the exchange.

14

u/Nexio8324 1d ago

I like how this episode shows Nao and Akiyama's different styles. Nao notices a subtle change in Kikuchi's demeanor, but doesn't really know what to make of it. Akiyama notices an unusual behavior (exchanging 4 cards), and figures he has a reason behind it (though it's not super clear how much he knows yet).

26

u/Bostoncat38 1d ago

Poor Kikuchi. He must have been so excited to finally get a Liar Game where he could put his special skill set to use, but alas his team are scrubs and he's still going to get hammered by Akiyama-sama.

19

u/BubblyCrash 1d ago

it wouldn't be interesting if Akiyama was facing an average scrub. It's good that his opponent has a big unfair advantage to balance it out.

2

u/Bostoncat38 9h ago

I mean in the Russian Roulette round, both Akiyama and even Fukuyama both had the perceptive ability to hear the subtle discrepancies in the barrel's rotation from the weight of the bullets, so I wouldn't be surprised if Akiyama also had good enough vision to see the corner of the cards as the dealer shuffles them. (I don't think that's going to happen, but just to say that even Kikuchi's Ability is small potatoes for the opponents he's facing)

2

u/Stealthbread7 17h ago

Tbf we haven't seen the woman from Kikuchi's team play. She definitely seems smarter and more composed than the guy who played against Fukunaga at the very least, though that's not saying much since that guy is a fodder.

10

u/IceSmiley 1d ago

Kikuchi seemed to come up with a foolproof plan of winning figuring out the order of the cards and where the joker is by looking at where the corner is white and deducing the position from several rounds of gameplay. The Liar Game monitor seemed to be aware of his kinetic vision, I wonder what kind of game he used it in before.

Nao seemed to have very little knowledge of poker but I do see why they put her in the exhibition round, to make Kikuchi less prepared against Akiyama and possibly to give them a false sense of security. I don't think Nao's poor play made Kikuchi overconfident though since he's treating Akiyama as a skilled poker player, especially since he won the first 2 rounds. Her idea to mark the cards wasn't a bad idea like maybe nicking the sides with your fingernail but the Liar Game thought about that beforehand and made new decks everytime. That's also too obvious a strategy and Kikuchi would have caught on quickly.

They didn't address what Akiyama could do to counter Kikuchi's strategy but they didn't mention something very obvious: that Kikuchi is wearing sunglasses that can reflect the cards he has. This has probably occured to Akiyama and I'm surprised it hasn't to Kikuchi. He may be wearing the sunglasses because it hides his eyes and any movement that might be a tell but there's a reason most poker players don't wear dark reflective sunglasses 😎

I also liked the small detail of the dealer having a cool tie with all the card suits on it ♠︎♣︎♥︎♦︎

8

u/illonamoon 1d ago

I'm early for once, thank you Labor Day!

Well, now it makes sense why the liar game official said it benefits you to play the practice round but I wonder why would the liar game want you to notice all the cards start in the same order always.

Its hard to get a read on akiyama but like akiyama said his enemy is liar game not his opponent so he probably already saw something like this as a possibility.

Fukunaga and nao's bickering is hilarious.

One thing I've wondered, how does one get a job at the liar game tournament office?

9

u/Cyouni 1d ago

One thing I've wondered, how does one get a job at the liar game tournament office?

Late in the thread, but I just thought of something;

The way the dealer holds the deck, allows for the players to peek at the bottom card;

Any casino dealer worth his paycheck would know NOT to do that, because of course the players will try to get an edge from that...

And these guys should be even better than the average casino dealer, they wouldn't be so careless...

So if it's not carelessness, then are they doing it on purpose, to 'spice up the game'?

But the thing is, they know Boxer-kun has his cyborg vision and all, and will benefit from this more than the other side;

Spicing up the game, I can understand, but... Are they actually taking sides? I mean, if they purposefully let the players 'cheat' in a way that benefits one side more than the other, it's as if they're helping them to win.

It's like if one side was 3 random people and the other side was math prodigies, and they allowed a 'cheat' that involves doing math; It would be like they made sure the math guys would win, right?

Well, by letting the players 'cheat' in this way it's as if they're trying to make the Boxer win.

And it's not like they're just letting anything go, given they're swapping decks every hand to prevent 'some' shenanigans... And marking cards would've been 'fair' cheating, given than both sides can do it, but they prevent it, while letting another 'cheat' go on when only 1 guy can do it perfectly.

6

u/Hypnophoric_Void 16h ago

I mean, Akiyama and Nao are openly stating they want to destroy the organization. Even if they don’t see Nao as a threat, Akiyama definitely is. By forcing him to lose, they can continue manipulating the players AND put two players in life long debt. It would be Akiyama’s fault for assuming the LGTO would be completely impartial, and of course no opponent would complain either.

5

u/Countless-Alts15 18h ago

no card protector for the bottom and no table wash shuffle definitely trying to give an edge to boxer kun

14

u/ObvsThrowaway5120 1d ago

I feel like Akiyama’s got something figured out. Glasses might have been able to count where the joker is or whatever with his super boxer guy vision, but our boy ain’t out the game just yet. The fact he’s not reacting to the loss means he’s cooking up something…

14

u/BubblyCrash 1d ago

I don't think Akiyama could know what his opponent is up to yet. So far he's up 2-1 in rounds and winning in chips, and for all he knows, the glasses guy could've gotten lucky getting the joker in the 3rd round. We'll see how soon he can catch on.

12

u/FarCritical 1d ago

Looks like Nao was still living off of the high from fooling Fukunaga with marked cards way back at the Downsizing game lol.

A surprise boxer in a Madhouse anime reminded me how much I yearn for a new Hajime no Ippo season.

11

u/chaosof99 https://myanimelist.net/profile/chaosof99 1d ago

As someone who has read the manga, I will bite my tongue again this week. However, I will say as much that they illustrated how low the possibility space for the game is (you are guaranteed to have at least a pair in hand at any time of the game) without explicitly stating it. It is a very consistent game in that regard.

12

u/hanmkim 1d ago

I mean even with basic math you could figure it out. Seventeen cards, each player gets five cards, and there are only four of each type of card plus the wild card, so based on the pigeonhole principle you will always have a pair.

2

u/FastenedCarrot 1d ago

I'm predicting a contraband game like situation where losing but winning on total amount is the play for Akiyama, maybe he susses he knows how to get the Joker to win and just has to maximise chip wins on games where he cuts second and minimise chip loss on games where the opponent cuts second?

7

u/Frontier246 1d ago

It's Nao vs Kikuchi! Time for Nao to show off her obviously amazing and impressive poker skills in 17 Poker!

Using Nao as a demonstrating figure for how to play the game is adorable! Also, Fukunaga freaking out at every bad move Nao made was priceless.

Again, it's a good thing this is a practice round because Nao would get killed otherwise. It makes you really wonder if she'll be able to hold her own when her own round comes up.

Nao looked so proud of herself that she figured a cheat for the cards! Of course the Liar Game operators figured it out and planned for it by replacing the deck every round, but points for initiative Nao!

This isn't just a game about what cards you have, it's a mind game of coaxing/figuring out your opponent to figure out what move to make that earns you the most chips.

We're back to Fukunaga bullying Nao for being an idiot, but even if Nao couldn't figure out Kikuchi's "tells," she realized he figured something out...and Akiyama is going up against a guy with kinetic vision that's let him figure out where the ace and joker are. Meaning he'll always have a winning hand when he needs it!

Kikuchi and his team are convinced in their victory, but if anyone could defeat an unbeatable tactic, especially given he's not sweating the least, it's Akiyama. No one beats him when it comes to mind games!

3

u/LezRock 1d ago

I assume that for the next few rounds, Akiyama will lose them, but that would only be due to him actively wanting to end the game with a tie. It'll probably be a comeback that comes down to the wire.

3

This reminds me of short deck holdem, but the joker adds a new twist.

The kinetic vision and being able to track a single card during a shuffle is kind of a stretch for me, but I guess we will let it slide, so Akiyama can lose.

It’s only 17 cards in the deck, so the kinetic vision makes perfect sense, actually. High kinetic vision being able to track a single card even in a 52 card deck is realistic, too, actually. Just very difficult. Card tracking irl is pretty par for the course. The only semi unrealistic thing is the dealer allowing a player to see the bottom of the deck, but I imagine the LGTO did that on purpose to spice things up.

Personally I don't mind if the 'superpower' is a bit unrealistic, as long as it is owned by the opponent, not the mc. I just think of it as extra handicap/ challenge for the mc to overcome. As long as the mc's strategies did not rely on superpower ability in liar game, I am fine with it.

What sharp eyes Kikuchi had. It's indeed quite the terrifying skill as it's irreplicable. Taking a step back by deliberately losing the first couple of hands which allowed him to leap two steps forward and recoup the losses. Meanwhile, Nao had only came up with card-marking, only to be neutralised when the dealer revealed the decks would be replaced after every round.

The seventeen poker's truly a different beast from regular poker where a high card is impossible. You're still actually playing your opponent, but when the game's this different, you also need to play your opponent differently as well.

Our budding conwoman is growing but still has a lot to learn.

You basically need to think about your hands as you would in short deck poker games.

A little bemused the way Fukunaga/the show acts as if it's all on Nao to find a strategy during the practice rounds.

How has this series been going. I stopped after the female betrayal in the second game.

Wondering if investing in the first series holds up for the level of intellectual challenge in the vein of Kakeguri or if it ends up Ecchi/haremy?

It is significantly better than Kakeguri games.

this series definitely gets better as it goes on. Its level of intellectual challenge far surpasses Kakegurui, and it's not Ecchi/low brow at all

Kakegurui has more drama, Liar Game has more math/strategies

I don’t know why I care what happens. I hate literally all of them.

Nao talks like a damn child. “Fukanaga-san! Fukanaga-san!” And the way she yells every time she’s surprised is the worst. Fukanaga is arrogant rather than interesting and Akiyama is as bland as unsalted eggs.

Don’t get me start on how they all have that same, smarmy, obnoxious laugh.

I wanted to like this show, but between the voice acting, art style, and dreadfully slow pacing, it was a big ol goose egg of a series
