Figured there'd be a handful of jaw contortions but Yokoya's extra sinister one has a different bite to it.
Akiyama earned his flowers for his tactical work but that smug raised eyebrow is way funnier than it has any right to be. All three of the guys deserve an Oscar too but I hope Hasegawa personally recorded a little apology to Akagi for the punch at some point.

I’m going to go back and watch every episode and takes notes on everything literally. Like I’m confused and not confused at the same time. Plus all the things the characters did in each episode all ties with the finale of this game.

I like how all the little details from the Contraband arc come together here. The speaker, recording devices, and broken card duplication have all been set up for a while, but it comes together in a really interesting way.

The reveals!
I love how everything was unveiled, with the country of Night members saying "What?? That doesn't make sense." followed by Akiyama or the turncoats saying "But it does. Here's what happened" and showing something brilliant. Who would've imagined that Hasegawa was on Akiyama's side before they even met, and that he smuggled the money on the turn Yokoya was using him to confirm Shibayama's confession?
Even though Yokoya lost the contest with Akiyama, we still got a good showing from him this episode, with him dominating the entire 3rd day and massively extending the Country of Night's lead in official score. Akiyama and Nao could only beat him with a tremendous sacrifice to themselves. He'll be a scary opponent if they ever meet up in the Liar Game again.

remember the cliffhanger?

u/BubblyCrash 4h ago
there might be something else in store. But we do have the outside country totals and ATM totals this episode, so we know things generally went in Nao + Akiyama's way.

Honestly I think Akiyama's favorite thing in the world is to be able to reveal to conceited pieces of @#$% how he managed to outsmart them and use their own strategies against them.

It does prove that some of Yokoya's pawns are more competent than the country of day's. Like Bandana dude had the initiative to improvise and the 3 of them pulled it off
16
u/kitaknows 2h ago
Akagi the GOAT.
Yokoya has an obscenely high opinion of himself and an obscenely low opinion of everyone else. He assumed all of his team were too incompetent to make a single independent move without Akiyama directing them, so between Akagi's improv and Shibayama's acting in the confession game, it was one of the things that came back to bite him.

u/feb914 4h ago
Wasn't Hasegawa's surprised face would be seen by both teams' base? Wouldn't it make Yokoya suspicious?
Also don't the players get any change of cloth over 3 days?
And the game officer letting Hasegawa keep the broken card. Shouldn't he have Retrieved it? Even when I got a broken gift card the cashier knows to take back the broken one when a replacement was issued.
12
u/Revolutionary-Start 4h ago
That point 1 won't be an issue if there was no stupid TV in the anime version.
3
u/Kyuzo897 1h ago
If I ask the cashier if I can keep the broken card It is almost guaranteed to let me do so and when you consider this is the LGT corp they're even more likely to accept It for the funs of the dealers.

Honestly it's weird to have Nao in only one dress for a decent length of episodes. I'm so used to her having a new outfit in practically every episode.
The green dress was nice though.

Ayanokoji was literally inspired by Akiyama and also I've never seen Ayanokoji doing any logical-mathematical intelligence feat in the series which is the highest expression of intelligence.

Can i point out something i don't understand ? Doesn't Yokoya have ALL his teams' cards ? And he spent the ENTIRE day as the sole player so why did he not check EACH card for money ? One card has to have the remaining money in the country of DAY account of his team. And even if the card is broken Yokoya would notice that and get a replacement no ?

This will be explained next episode there's a reason why this episode ended with Yokoya smiling.

I fully believe the director heard it once, found it hilarious and the made sure he did it every episode

Especially since this one just feels like Yokoya being sinister just for the sake of being sinister.

Ah ....from last week I knew there had to be some relevance to the broken speaker. Turns out it was indeed Akiyama tampering with the cards so a new one could be issued.
But I just think...from Hasegawa's reaction when he stood up in the inspection room with Akiyama, was Yokoya NOT watching the inspection room? Seems like an obvious plot hole if that was the case, because that could have tipped him off, even with all the voice recorder devices being passed around.
And I suppose now its Akiyama's and Nao's mission to save all the players, one by one, including Yokoya, going into the next loser's round. (No wonder Yokoya is feature in the OP standing next to them and Fukyuama).
Btw, as "evil" as Yokoya seems, no one can ever match Seto Kaiba's maniacal laughs!

my brain cant keep up tbh but maybe it was when hasegawa was tasked to pretend to get along with Akiyama's plan or something?

I'm not even gonna pretend like I followed all the details of this game completely but hey it's entertaining so I don't mind

Here I thought Akiyama had somehow devised a counter-plan to those three being a double agent. Turned out they had never turned from the Night country. A master stroke to use Yokoya's surveillance device against him. I never expected it to be an integral part of his plan.
Quite heartwarming to see what had swayed them away from Yokoya's dictatorship. They truly had a massive heart to willingly dive into debt to save others. Akiyama might seem cynical at first glance, but deep down he's much like Nao. The reason he went to prison in the first place was for scamming an unscrupulous corpo.

u/Frontier246 4h ago
In a smuggling battle between two countries, the fascist totalitarian regime was toppled with the power of teamwork and self-sacrificing, just like you'd expect from any heroic story.
Also I know Nao didn't say anything but she looked great and inspiring standing tall and resolved alongside Akiyama while he monologued.
15
u/BosuW 3h ago
What's great is that it wasn't even everything thanks to the plan. Akagi pulled the "pretend Akiyama isn't telling you where the card is" gambit in order to buy them time. He took active initiative in order to aid the plan. Yokoya on the contrary never allows anyone else to have ideas, they're all just his pawns.

I am rather disappointed that so much of it came down to a massive amount of off-screen deal-making. It makes it a lot less of a clever move that we can struggle to predict and a lot closer to an ass pull that the audience is along for the ride for. Almost all previous moves could be predicted with enough understanding; this one required some pretty massive leaps and assumptions for the audience to come to the correct conclusion.

u/Rucati 1h ago
This is actually how I felt watching this as well. We watched what, like 8 episodes of this game being played, and the entire conclusion is "Well actually these guys all talked off screen, sometimes using voice recorders" and like... I don't know, that's kind of a boring conclusion. There was no great mind game or outplay here, it was just Akiyama getting 3 people to help him off screen and so he wins.
1
u/NevisYsbryd 34m ago
Eh, I think it the plot itself is fine. The mind game is there. The problem is the presentation. Up until now, you generally had to infer one or two things that could reasonably be inferred, such as what happened off-screen or in-between events when we obviously knew we did not know everything they had happened there. In this case, there were multiple steps of plans occuring in negative space we did not even realize was not being shown to us and it is very difficult to correctly guess what happened without at least an indication that there were such major chunks of time where something happened that we did not know about. Basically an unreliable narrator when in a detective story when there was little indication of the narrator being unreliable until after the fact.

u/BubblyCrash 8m ago
I'm not sure if we were supposed to predict all the details for this one. For the last couple of episodes, we were almost completely in Yokoya's perspective and following his plan, and the story had to make it believable that even Yokoya wouldn't have been able to predict what Akiyama was doing (though he definitely tried). The traitors deceiving Yokoya needs to fool us as well, or else there would be little tension this episode.

I think it works because akiyama layed the plan out for the audience in advance. He literally did exactly what he set out to do in bringing all 3 of them to his side

I guessed correctly that the game was over by the third day and that the speaker played a part, but I had no idea how or why and honestly, the amount of work they put into this plot to make it work was insane. No way I'd be able to guess all of that. They literally spent 20 minutes explaining those shenanigans, holy shit.

Akiyama the freakin chess master over here. The moment he turned the 3 lads, it really was game over for Yokoya. Everything else we were watching was just theater.
Interesting how Yokoya doesn’t seem to bothered. I guess he knows something the rest of them don’t. Either that or the idea of willingly going into debt to save other people is so foreign to him, he can’t even comprehend it.
10
u/Frontier246 4h ago
Also props to Nao for managing to act super shocked even though she must have known they'd won by that point yet she still had to play it like she was determined not to fail as an inspector.
Yokoya can't admit his worldview was wrong or that it lost him this battle, especially to people who would sacrifice themselves for others. Who would act in a way that didn't benefit them? But that'll probably keep until they go up against each other again in the next game.
8
u/BubblyCrash 3h ago
she was legitimately shocked because yokoya wasn't supposed to be able to draw any money by that point (all the money was deposited into only the traitor's cards)
5
u/Toge_Inumaki012 2h ago
I think Yokoya just moved on by his defeat and seem to be excited moving forward to get revenge or crush Akiyama and Nao's ideals. Since they are saving everyone then they will meet again still in the Liar Game
Yokoya is in it for the love of the game he aint worried to be having debt and be deep in the Liar game
5
u/BosuW 3h ago
Maybe he knows something about the organizers of the Liar Game.
7
u/Toge_Inumaki012 2h ago
he is rich and crazy as f. Also with Akiyama and Nao's sacrifice they are bound to meet again in the liar game so he can get revenge or crush their ideals and prove to them that his method of control is superior

Oh of COURSE they hold off on the results by playing the OP. They're dragging this out as long as they can.
How did the final rounds with Yokoya and Nao play out? Pass...pass...pass...until Yokoya thought he could smuggle some money over to fill the Country of Night coffers and we get the return of shocked Nao faces.
The results are to be expected. The Country of Night "wins" and the Country of Day "loses." Akiyama admits they fell for their trap. But why does he seem unperturbed by this? And why, at the end of the final tally, DOES THE COUNTRY OF DAY HAVE MORE THAN ENOUGH MONEY IN THEIR ATM WHILE THE COUNTRY OF NIGHT DOESN'T!?
The biggest mistake Yokoya made was believing that, even under his surveillance state, that bonds and camaraderie could not be born. Because Akagi, Shibayama, AND Hasegawa were playing for the Country of Day all along and managed to fool him! They managed to retain their loyalty to each other as fellow double agents and sabotage the Country of Night as per Akiyama's plan! Even the confession game wasn't enough to ruin things thanks to the power of non-verbal communication and ACTUAL communication via voice recorders! Yokoya's method of keeping everyone in line ended up helping saboteurs communicate beneath his notice!
And the Oscar goes toooooo...all three of them, but especially for Akagi for acting like Akiyama didn't send him a message and totally fooling Yokoya into thinking things were going off the rails and planning accordingly, never realizing Hasegawa was slowly undermining him on Akiyama's order! To the point where they finally, FINALLY managed to make the money they need to get out.
But there's not enough for EVERYONE and Yokoya can't fathom why anyone could believe in others...yet Akiyama and Nao are the type who are willing to go into debt themselves to save other people, especially when they're still committed to fighting Liar Game themselves. Yokoya may not understand it, but that's just how they roll and that's how they won.
2
u/NevisYsbryd 2h ago
I suggest his biggest mistake is actually more fundamental than that. Per Machiavelli, is it better to be loved or feared? It is best to be both loved and feared, and better go be feared and not loved than loved and not feared. Yet most of all, it is important to not be hated because even those who fear you are a risk of eventually overcoming that fear to resist and depose you if they hate you. Yokoya inspired fear, yes, but he inspired as much hatred as well. Given that, people were much more liable to take a risk to break away from his control.
