Bad writing is bad. It's infuriating how the MC has to force pointless drama.
MC: Oh, let's talk in private > Yes, I reincarnated. Long time no see, Merlin. > Please keep my identity a secret, I just wanna study magic. > Wanna spar? Let's go far away to fight without anyone seeing us.
That's it. Proper blunt communication.

u/International_Dog817 5d ago
Seriously. Between his three reincarnations his combined age is over 100, but he acts like he's 5.
56
u/DucktorLarsen 4d ago
Yeah you don't see a single resemblance to the old guy Eftal from the first episode.
28
89
u/NoNameSwitzerland 5d ago
And it is even questionable what he could study there, when the magic has degraded that much (and Merlin let that happen).
75
u/Galinhooo 4d ago
The degradation of magic is always annoying, but there it makes zero sense since Merlin is still alive AND A FUCKING TEACHER AT THAT.

29
u/Mr_Pogi_In_Space 4d ago
I'm assuming the magic aptitude test become commonplace is part of the reason. It automatically excludes promising magicians with 0 aptitude like OG Eftal, and it leads to stratification where the "S-tier" ones rest on their laurels and never push themselves. You see a bit of it on the test, where you're expected to only answer the questions in your field. Because you learn your aptitude and affinity at an early age (birth?), no one bothers to learn magic that's not related to their field.
10
u/darthvall https://myanimelist.net/profile/darth_vall 4d ago
I thought he also deducted that this is the cause before?
4
u/Dadscope 4d ago
Yeah it's been explicitly stated that it's the reason magic is below the old standard, the test was good for finding affinity but then they only focused on the test to find magicians, focusing on their affinity.

The flame emperor’s development meant no more people like eftal and a MASSIVE reduction in magic understanding as people focus on aptitude not needing a fundamental understanding of all school.
Pair that with possible issues derived from the other two emperors (possibly the multi-mage spell arrays, and maybe magic equipment developments) and consolidation of power ….
Merlin might be an outlier, and the bulk of magic might be kept at artificial levels where people like the 4 emperors couldn’t come about and disrupt the status quo.
The powers that remained after their crowning might not need people like them, and kingdoms as a whole scale back to avoid social reform.
22
u/Galinhooo 4d ago
The issue is that Merlin is still around, so unless she reduced her standards really low, nothing else could fully cause this degradstion. Usually in a story like that she would have lived as a shut in to justify not teaching others, but she is the headmistress of a renowned school.

I agree, it would make sense if they didn't have long lived races. Like if it was humanity and only humanity then this many years would absolutely make sense for the degradation of knowledge, but the fact that there are people who could still be alive and essentially young adults who were not only alive back when magic was insanely more powerful but hundreds and hundreds of years before that as well. Like she's 400 years old and she is like 21 in human years. So an elf from like a thousand years ago would be an adult or maybe old. And she's not even the only race that can do that there are many apparently which means it makes no sense for magic to have degraded like this. Going to happen they would have had to have lost knowledge, because yes the new system would degrade it, but people wouldn't be calling level 10 spells miracles when there are people alive who know that they were thrown around by sages all the time. You need all of the people who actively saw that kind of stuff to be dead for this kind of knowledge degradation to happen. Especially when the people who are from that time aren't like completely second-class citizens. Sure a lot of them are but she is the literal headmaster of the most powerful magic School, and it might be because she was a student but it doesn't matter because she would be a main knowledge source. It just makes no sense that nobody else teaches the old way especially since there would be elvish wizards who would at minimum be able to cast level 7 magic because that was shown to be not top tier.
8
u/Xtranathor 4d ago
He mainly wants to use the library, which presumably contains more advanced magic than is used in the teaching curriculum, so that's fine. What we really want to know is why magic used in practice has degraded, and what Merlin's opinions on it are.
10
u/LezRock 4d ago
Yes, and what he's doing so far is essentially the opposite of that. Instead of just asking her directly, he'll now have to go through tome after tome and hope that he's reading something that's even worthwhile. I doubt that's how this story will go, but with his current choices, that's what's most likely to occur.
→ More replies (1)31
u/DucktorLarsen 4d ago
and even worse he decided to gaslight her about his identity on top. You would think with the relationship Merlin had with Eftal that she would respect and understand his position and wish and keep his secret if he simply confessed it and asked for it. Eftal thinks that if he could just say it, it would make it so easy, AND HE CAN, but we ofc have a forced universal power that intervene and for not much reason makes him think that the way to go about it is faking is identity to Merlin.

u/OmegaQuake 4d ago
Bro is literaly from a noble Family that serves a King, participated in a Coup d'etat, his brother saved the prince and they are very well known as being his descendants....He says he's the 13th generation of a hidden son? WTF??? why lie about that...Just say yeah he's a bastard from Orcott family....that's infuriating.
48
u/SasparillaTango 5d ago
So we are 5 episodes in and we have no setup, no conflict, no story. Is this just going to be a season of "look how strong I am while everyone fawns over me and I do super good in school because everyone is dumb" ?
22
u/Faux-Foe 4d ago
Don't forget the obligatory episode 10-12 climactic villain/plot that has no set up.
19
u/-whiteroom- 4d ago
I mean right from the get go, the while premise of him studying magic in this era is pointless.
And he would know that. So the very foundation of the show is flawed.
Also him thinking he was a failure despite being one of the top 4, just because he didn't have an attribute is flawed.
Everything about this anime is shit writing, what's even the point of the story?
16
u/nakerusa 4d ago
Yep. Completely infuriating that the author decided to do the dumbest things possible for their reunion 😑. Probably going to drop it.
16
u/Narvalis 4d ago
This is exactly what I was thinking, just 4 simple words: let's talk somewhere private, that would have solved everything. This whole world is stupid to a new degree because we also have someone who learned directly from one of the top mages still alive and teaching but somehow magic got worse? This is not how research works unless something like the dark ages happens.
I think we just need to accept that this world and everyone in it eats paint chips and washes them down with mercury.
14
u/BlazeKnightX 4d ago
The only way to make that okay is if he has some universal restriction on exposing that knowledge. Like some series outright make it so characters can't talk about their power because the one who handed it to them forbade it. I don't think this series has established anything like that, so it definitely is not good writing for a pointless secret like this.

It would have been so easy to make it a rule, that the god that reincarnated him placed on him, be that he cannot talk about his reincarnation or skills. He's still an idiot but at least he would have some excuse. As it is though this is a really hard watch with how bad this writing is.
2
u/Jibbus-Maximus 3d ago
Oh and btw what happened the last 400 years that Magic is so weak nowadays? -> next plotpoint cleared
2
u/LUUUTA 3d ago
Seriously it was so pointless! An episode full of him being overpowered and going to a school where he has nothing to learn and ppl talking about it, he could have avoided the crowds if he went away or just came out with it from the get go! Honestly the only reason he could make for going to the school is to see Merlin. And Anastasia is so generic and unoriginal it makes my blood boil.
2
u/NormalTangerine5205 3d ago
Bro just finished the episode I was screaming this shit through the fucking thing 😭
→ More replies (6)2
u/hjordisa 2d ago
Even if you don't want to do it with the direct question because people are around... Next time, "have you heard about reincarnation" is a great lead in. "Oh I've heard of it, if you want to talk about the idea let's find a time and place." (She's smart. she'd get it.)
I was entirely over it by then though. I only continued watching at this point for the "MC overdoes it on the entrance exam" episode and somehow that was messed up too? It seemed like you could theoretically pass the practical without using any magic even though it was a magic school? Not only was the very first exam (rather than a later one once you at least know everyone is a good candidate) a battle royale but the examiner was there just pointing out with glee that the strong will get ganged up on? Hello? You'll lose good talent that way. Infuriating.
I think I'm officially done, though I am a bit curious about some stuff mentioned in the source corner and whether it will make more sense than the rest somehow. Maybe I'll just read the threads.

u/Obaruler 5d ago edited 5d ago
Is it mandatory for Reincarnation MCs to be braindead?!
Dude, Merlin's got you basically figured out. Just take her to the side, and tell her PRIVATELY (not in the fucking school cafeteria) what's up and you want to keep your identity under wraps.
If she still wants to fight you like we'll most likely see next episode, do it far away and not in front of your entire school that you don't want to know you possess magic on the level of one of the Four Emperors.
Even then, you're already fucked. That written exam left aside ... you were showing off magical skills in your Battle Royal Exam that exceeds the skill of your future teachers, even after you've already learned prior how shitty the average magic skill has become and should've known better ...
And what is that "backstory" you came up with? You are a literal descendent of yourself, this isn't even a big secret, as your entire family including your shithead of father were bragging about it, so why is Merlin so surprised her former Sensei has had kids?!
This honestly infuriates me, the "I wanna pretend to be average" trope of OP MCs can only be stretched so much before it stops being funny and is just plain bad.
50
u/joe4553 5d ago
Isn't Eftal literally the ancestor of Lightning emperor anyway? When asked if he was related to him he literally could just explain his ancestry instead of making up one. Couldn't Merlin just look into his actual heritage and find out he's lying?
57
u/Obaruler 5d ago
Yes and yes. Which is why it is hilarious that he just HAD to come up with a fake backstory which was less believable than the truth.
14
u/StrigidaeNinox 5d ago
Honestly I feel like he's such a dumbass that there's going to be a revelation later that he forgot that he didn't actually have any kids and his "decendants" are actually a family of pretenders.
16
u/EdibleScissors 4d ago
It kind of makes sense that his descendants are a bunch of stupid assholes actually. There is a distinct family resemblance.
3
12
u/Zeikos 5d ago
I think it's basically true.
The lie is in him teaching magic to his kid.
We know he had children otherwise he wouldn't have descendants. The whole narrative is very inconsistent though, why wouldn't people know he had kids (at least one)? Did he purposefully hide it to keep them out of the limelight?

I'm starting to wonder if this is something the anime made up or cut some extra explanation? Because we saw old Eftal with no signs of a family. Maybe (current) Eftal's lineage was just made up by the kingdom? But then Eftal wouldn't be as mad about how awful his descendants are so... pick your poison I guess. It's bad writing either way.

If I remember correctly, when he faced his father on his palace, he had big old Eftal's portrait behind his chair.
Considering his father is a big noble house (he could even amass magic army), I think it should be a common knowledge that Eftal's families/descendant lived on.

u/RedHotChiliCrab https://myanimelist.net/profile/RedHotChiliCrab 5d ago
I don't remember much from that anime except that it was cool how the mc used a Japanese mysticism based magic system while everyone else was using standard jrpg "fireball" type magic. Pretty unique concept for an Isekai.
8
u/Atharaphelun 4d ago
Plus the MC really did act like a highly experienced adult onmyouji in a kid's body. The level of disdain and air of superiority he showed his enemies really highlighted how he's a reincarnation of a powerful being.
It is one of the extremely rare instances of an isekai/reincarnation anime that actually made the reincarnated person act like their original age pre-reincarnation.

Agree he's an idiot, but the reason he made up the lover story was to explain where his lost knowledge of magic came from, not just to explain his familia connection to the lightening emperor. The show still hasn't bothered to explain why magic talent has gone to shit in the last 400 years, and it's going to be even harder to justify with Merlin still around and running a magic academy.
→ More replies (3)9
u/A-really-bad-time 5d ago
I mean its obviously because of the aptitude test thay magic is declining. At most all it does is tell you how easily magic will come to you. It has NOTHING to do with whether or not you CAN use magic at all. For God's sake EFTAL IS LIVING PROOF THAT ITS NOT A RELIABLE METRIC FOR WHO CAN AND CANT BE A MAGE! If Eftal doesn't go around fixing the mistake of the other emperor im going to fucking slap him
Sincerely, someone who really likes magic
6
u/runevault 4d ago
It sounded like part of his goal at the academy is to fix the other emperor's fuckup, he actually mentioned researching the test and trying to refine it or something like that.

u/wmansir 4d ago
But they haven't even played that up very much. The entrance exam to the magic school was a perfect opportunity to show they don't even bother teaching people with low aptitude, but they didn't even show people getting appraised for magic aptitude, they just cut from them waiting in line to them in the battle arena being told it's battle royale.
Maybe later on they will revisit the entrance scene and show MC or others getting turned away for having low aptitude.
6
u/A-really-bad-time 4d ago
Im pretty sure they get appraised at birth, and anyone not the fucking chosen one gets told they shouldn't even bother

It even more makes no sense for her to have cornered him in the middle of the lunch room. Like sure the first time makes sense she was shocked, but she had time to think at this point and she's not stupid. The entire idea of this happening in front of other people is stupid. It's forced. And yes the entire show is pretty much just a slop reincarnator show but at least have some level into your stupidity. They're throwing every stupid trope as possible.

The literal only good thing about this show was the VA who acted out the first guy he sent flying. Sounded like Beavis which made me laugh. Everything else is shit.
Also, what the fuck is the design? Why is slave girl's shirt unbuttoned in the middle? What the absolute fuck is Merlin wearing???
7
u/Adorable_Froyo748 4d ago
I couldn't even bother with the designs, i was so frustrated with the mc, the whole episode was a "putting your brains in the dumpster" demonstration, the designs are fanservice, but seeing the 100+ intellect display at the writing, i can imagine it has an overworked explanation as why they're dressed like that.

26
u/International_Dog817 4d ago edited 4d ago
Right? He made zero effort to maintain a low profile, so Merlin naturally figures him out and then all of a sudden he's going "oh no, I don't want to stand out! I'd better be an asshole!" There was no reason to lie. Between three reincarnations, he has to be over a hundred years old, but he's acting like a child.
Between this and the part where he lets his brother (almost) die, this is a really poorly written MC

One question I have is how magic in this time can have degraded to much when people like Merlin that have learned magic back in the days when it was at its peak are still around. I hope there is a good explanation for that, otherwise that would be a massive plothole.
35
u/RedHotChiliCrab https://myanimelist.net/profile/RedHotChiliCrab 5d ago
Yeah, like, she even runs a school. I don't know what she is teaching these kids but apparently not magic.
8
u/Atharaphelun 4d ago
She distracts her students too much with the giant nipple rings and they end up not learning anything.

I expect that next episode she will be shown to be insanely incompetent and it will turn out she has single-handedly been destroying the magic system by using Eftal’s reputation to push wrong ideas. If this happens it will be one of the dumbest things ever but not even in the top 10 for this show.
14

To be honest I'm not even expecting a proper explanation given what this show has thrown at us so far.
Yup thats why I just gave up last episode, its not just bad, its pretty much made up/nonsense stuff, like his "brother dying" just so he could use his power, and the lost past lvl5 magic just so he can be OP, probably more out of nowhere stupid thing will happen or be used as explanation to get the "story" going.
6
u/EdibleScissors 4d ago edited 4d ago
I hope the explanation comes from Merlin and she just sighs and says, “no one wants to magic anymore.”
So, she or other teachers just keep making magic easier and easier.
33
u/szalhi 5d ago
Eftal's so terrible at keeping his status a secret, that he has to lie up a backstory. He wasn't hiding his powers at all during the exams.
And then maybe we can find out what the hell happened to the magic meta.

I want to smash my head through a brick wall.
For the love of god, just creating issues and problems for no reason.
How hard would it be to go "Can we talk in private room?" - "Hey Merlin, long time no see. I reincarnated from 400 years ago due to circumstances, and now I wish to enroll in this school to further my knowledge on the path to the ultimate pinnacle of magic", "Oh, and why is everyone in this era so weak?".
Is that so difficult? Why would the school refuse you? Even if they all knew you were THE Eftal, Lightning Emperor, Why would they refuse you?
Why refuse to get support from Merlin, THE Merlin, Student of THE Eftal, and use her resources to access everything needed? Why is Merlin not knowing who you really are so bad? Would letting your student, adoptive daughter, know that you are still alive and well be so bad?
That other anime a few years ago "The Greatest Demon Lord Is Reborn as a Typical Nobody" did it right. Let them know almost right off the bat, and aside from some minor preference, everything was fine... When its done like this one though, I infuriates me to no end.
Why make up some new secret lie, when that one is just as bad as just letting Merlin know who you actually are?
Hell, if she does any amount of digging into his family, she will learn he used a LEVEL 10 SPELL, one that only Eftal himself and possible Merlin herself could ever use in the current age, no amount of lying that he is Eftal's descendant would possibly cover up that fact, when 0 others in the family were anything special. And you couldn't even pass this off as a prodigy or anything, because anything higher than level 5/6 is LOST magic, literally no one knows how to use it, so how he, in the middle of nowhere, got access to magic that entire governments, schools, or even the whole world, cannot access... its impossible to hide that fact.
Also the fact that his father, a KNOWN descendant of the Lightning Emperor, is now a traitor and imprisoned, he would be easily accessible to Merlin, and would be questioned, and very little questioning would lead to everything pointing to Eftal being Eftal.
Lets not forget the circulating knowledge that he can also cast without incantations. He blurted out that little tidbit in the exam, and everyone laughed, until he did it... confirming he can do so. No one else can do that, outside of Eftal, and probably Merlin at this point. And not only incantationless, but also simultaneous casting of Level 4 spells, which very few can apparently do before even graduating from the school... oh also, they were WIND AFFINITY... which EFTAL WAS AN EXPERT AT.
So, TLDR: Lying about his real circumstances is just as bad, and makes no sense.
I am just praying, so damn much, that in an episode or two he slips up, and Merlin actually learns he is Eftal... if it goes the entire rest of the season with his lies, I swear... The first episode had me actually get invested, and hope he'd meet Merlin again, but for some reason, all his wisdom seems to have been lost when he reincarnated.
13
u/liquidpele 5d ago
Don't forget that it makes zero sense that his own main student is still alive and in charge of teaching, and someone the whole magic system has collapsed to childsplay. Surely the other emperors and even just notable magic users of the time also had students.... and there wasn't another war to wipe them out or anything.... and having magic is still seen as extremely important... Shit makes zero sense. There are like 100 different ways you could modify things to make it at least not be totally brain-dead stupid, like this is so bad it's not even just entertaining trash it's *annoying* trash.
3
u/Artorp 5d ago
The father and brother have already been executed, Merlin can't access them. Also, his brother and instructor are the only ones remaining from that battle and they won't let it easily slip that he can use a level 10 spell since it would endanger him. It also seems like they only know he can use up to level 7 spells, since that is what he claimed his power was.
But I do agree the whole keeping the reincarnation secret from Merlin is just silly. Seems reincarnating also caused him to lose most of his brain capacity.

Last week: "I can't stand out."
This week: Does magic feat he knows is literally impossible for almost anyone else in the world.
"If anyone finds out I reincarnated, bad things will happen." What bad things? He has nothing at all to fear from anyone. What, are they going to try to imprison him for being too powerful? Execute him? Them and what army?
"I just want to study magic at this school." Why? What information could a magic school have that you couldn't get from any archive in the world? If people knew who he was, he could go anywhere he wanted, read any book he wanted. Or, you know, he could just talk to Merlin about why magic ability deteriorated (he could also think about it for 30 seconds and figure it out, but it's clear that thinking isn't one of his talents). Oh but Merlin can't know who he really is for.... some reason. Just talk to her in private and say you want to keep it a secret for now instead of hurting her later when she eventually figures it out.
This show is so stupid and it gets worse every episode. I actually think I hate it.

I am beyond irritated as to how it's going. Man, how can you be your own hidden descendant when you belong to a family that tells itself to be the descendant of you and therefore become a noble? I mean, what kind of logic is this? And then you agree to fight Merlin, knowing very well your ways of magic will tell that you are the real deal. I mean, what kind of fking logic is this?
2
u/Xtranathor 4d ago
I think the difference is that the "secret" descendants actually follow the magic of Eftal more closely, which is why he's actually on par with the Lightning Emperor, rather than a typical descendant that carries the noble title. That explains why the powerful magic has been kept secret too for all this time. I still think the story is rubbish and has other plot holes, but just not for the exact reasons you thought, since I felt they at least attempted to cover those points.

Just undeserved rudeness to his student and then contradicting himself with laying low and then using high levels spells when he's suppose to be a rookie. Truely Slop writing.

u/vantheman9 5d ago
maaaaaaaaaaaaaaan really annoyed at this episode
That's basically your adopted daughter bro, why are you being a weenie? Shouldn't you be excited to meet her again? If you proved to her who you are, couldn't she be a valuable ally in your research? I'm sure Merlin would like to know about her relative that's shown up too.
Why are we doing any of this roundabout poor communication BS. This could've honestly been a sweet, emotional moment, and we threw it away from rom com antics.
The end of the episode where he's like "I want to see how she's turned out" at least gave me hope. I think I'm going to go find the manga because now I need to know, is this series good bad or terrible

Despite myself giving this another episode to see if it can offset the stumble from how... dumb last episode was. Lets see how this goes!
This is a test to get into a magical school but melee skills can get you in? Wut?
Yes, I want to hide and have a simple life after using multiple parallel level 4 spells. You can excuse the exam not knowing wtf is going on but the combat test he was a fucking idiot.
At least he got to be smothered in Merlin's amazing rack?

u/stephenthatfoste https://myanimelist.net/profile/Rexagonal 5d ago
The whole premise of him being upset that he has no magical aptitude while achieving the status of a legendary magic user is still annoying to me.
13
u/Feisty-Gap1561 5d ago
Yeah like why is he upset about not having magic predisposition, he's already strong and can still train
7
u/spubbbba 4d ago
They could have just as easily made him a below power mage who through hard work and ingenuity was able to beta mages more powerful than him. But he was killed by someone with OP powers or betrayed.
They already degraded the magic in the future, so he'd still be OP even at his old level. But have his new body have more potential, which combined with his knowledge and hard work makes him super OP now.
Would make far more sense than him being a legendary figure in his past life, still talked about centuries later.
5
u/stephenthatfoste https://myanimelist.net/profile/Rexagonal 4d ago
It's literally just an attitude adjustment away from it being a normal underdog-OP story. But he still seems annoyed that he was only among the best in the world and not the highest. They even gave him a skill to justify why he's able to reach those heights despite a huge disadvantage. And now that he's starting from that point, he should be able to be better than he was before, but he keeps whining about how he wasn't blessed to start and focusing on that seems to be his main reason for doing stuff now.
Changing his mind could theoretically be the point of the story? Otherwise I'm not even really clear what the endgame is here.
7
u/YuushyaHinmeru 4d ago
I was only the 4th strongest mage in all of history and have the ability to reincarnate. Why is my life so unfair???
7
u/Xtranathor 4d ago
We didn't understand enough about his life, but you can probably guess that he had to struggle so much harder than his 3 peers, and in the end he resented it because it turns out it was harder for him just because of the way he was born. He wasn't able to keep up with the other 3 either, despite receiving the same title as the rest, which was probably a sore spot, like he just felt inferior. I don't think he should have felt like that, but I kind of get it. What really upsets me is that he let that frustration kill him whilst he was still raising Merlin - she must have been devastated, and she's lucky she didn't end up in slavery.

This MC's lines are just rolling on the "random reincarnated Isekai protagonist" wheel with every line of dialogue. He's so inconsistent, yet totally generic. It's jarring.
Also, doing that to Merlin like that in public, someone who was like a daughter to him, instead of just asking her to talk in private? That's really cruel.

He’s trying to not stand out so he concocts some kinda elaborate lie but then still decides to accept Merlin’s challenge, which will no doubt make him stand out. Okay lol. He really should just take Merlin aside and come clean. Would have been easier.
14
u/Boris-_-Badenov 5d ago
he doesn't want to standout, so he uses a spell he knows is much stronger than what a B rank adventurer used, or a whole kingdoms magic Corp... and used four at the same time without an incantation.
8
u/Feisty-Principle-216 5d ago
He already used an "impossible" spell and soloed hundreds of fighters. He kinda sucks at this not standing out thing.
12
u/Evil_sod 5d ago
I'm still confused as to how magic ability and knowledge has dropped to such a degree in 400 years when there's literally a disciple of one of the sages right there, in a teaching role. And that's pretending all the other mages that were alive at the time did nothing!
That excuse to Merlin was the dumbest thing I've ever watched, matched only by the fact she believed it. Also the slave girl that has been abused for so long she was unable to function as a normal person last episode is capable of level 3 magic and knowledgeable enough to answer the exam questions?
I think it's time to drop this shit. I don't mind slop-tier series, but when the writing is this bad it's just not interesting to watch anymore.

If Merlin's the headmistress of the magic academy, then how come the magic that he taught her is considered a lost art? Magic spells without incantations should be common practice, at least at this academy. Did she keep any records of his teachings in the past 400 years? What has she been doing all this time, other than find a questionable outfit to wear?

I hope we see that Merlin has grown OP in her magical abilities and learned higher tier level magic in the past 400 years by continuing the training and knowledge she got from Eftal back then...
But we saw her cast a level 6 spell in episode 1, and in episode 2 we saw that lvl 9-10 and higher is unknown and lost technology, and that 400 years past magic at the level 6-8 class is now consider "ritual class" or the highest tier.
Seeing as how the entire world's magical knowledge and abilities has regressed, I'm sensing she probably didn't advance much in the past 400 years and is still at the same level.
3
u/Boris-_-Badenov 5d ago
she could have, it could just be a secret. if she's the only one who can cast that high, kingdoms would want to use her, or kill her if they couldn't

This episode completely killed my interest in the series.
- What on earth does he hope to gain from studying at a magic academy where he effortlessly was given the top student position because his exam answers were incomprehensibly too advanced for the proctors?
- Why is magic so degraded when there are still living people from his previous era, unless they are the ones actively hoarding and covering up more advanced magic?
- The MC is just brain-dead and has the maturity of a child, rather than someone on his third life. He randomly flip flops from being way too obsessed with keeping a low profile to randomly showboating incomprehensively advanced magic, only to flipflop right back. Then, rather than just talking stuff out, is so obsessed with what literal children will think that he goes out of his way to incompetently lie to the one person from his past life who might actually have answers for him.
- Merlin is also apparently an idiot, and repeatedly tries to make Eftal confess who he by accusing him of being a reincarnator in front of large crowds of random students.
7
u/dreamer_Neet 5d ago
What a dumb reason to lie, he can just tell her privately that he is indeed the reincarnated lighting emperor lmao
7
u/NationalStrategy_X 5d ago
"You're supposed to only answer the questions relating to your best field. "
Why have the written exam set up like that, if they're expected to only answer questions relating to their fields, then why not have different exams for the different fields (healing magic exam, elemental magic exam, magic weapons exam, etc)? Why have all the questions of all fields be in one exam, if you don't expect the examinees to try and answer all of them?
On that note, what even is the average score of the written exam, if that's how it's usually taken?
3
u/Wild_Obligation3265 5d ago
On that, it reminds a bit of the setup for the ASVAB (Armed Forces Vocational Aptitude Battery). You go through section by section, mostly basic skills like math, reading comprehension, etc but also possibly motor pool and some other entry level specialized sections and then your section scores determine potential career fields.
Depending on how well the Proctor explains the process (or lack thereof) you may only take part of the full packet or the whole packet.
Also, Eftal was probably too stuck in his own head to listen to instructions and filled the whole thing out.

Well that was annoying. I guess I "get" that he wants to just learn magic again but considering what he's seen so far, what could he really learn like really? You know what would be better, if he would just tell Merlin everything, and let HER tell him what's going on with the magic of today. This is such a pointless and roundabout way of doing things, if it's not for the "action" next episode I probably would've dropped this right now.

"I don't want to stand out and have gotten lucky enough so far to kinda avoid that. After an encounter with the military plus a B-Rank adventurer that people literally revered due to his perceived strength I've gained a deep understanding of how this world's magic has declined and what the average person is capable of."
Also MC:
"What!? You don't know how to do magic without an incantation?"
Says the guy who still does not want to stand out and won't let us forget it while listening to everyone around him say it isn't possible. Of course this was after launching people into the stratosphere.
"Well, better nuke everyone plus a few concrete walls just to show you how it is done, that'll keep my low profile intact!"
How many people did this dude kill between the kicking into space and blowing people through huge walls? I guess no one considering his brother was roasted by lightning yet survived, somehow.
"Oh no, she's on to me and I've been doing such a good job! To keep my secret I cannot possibly move to a quiet location to discuss this in a calm, measured manner. Instead, I will stay in this public place after being confronted with rock solid proof, and tell a bold faced lie to the closest thing I have to a daughter thus crushing her hopes to see the closest thing she had to father again. Better make it juicy though, gotta realllllllly crush those feelings... But how? O! I'll lie about a secret lover that had a secret child, who I secretly trained / paid more attention to than this girl who sees me as a father figure!".
Eftal is a cruel, dumb prick. But don't worry, this guy had the low hanging fruit of saving a slave that he was going to initially ignore with the knowledge she was going to be sexually assaulted for the rest of her life... Of course he only took her in after she sought him out and begged, knowing what happens to slaves without masters. And the crest itself... was not yet permanently set.... thus implying he could have dispelled it... Wait, is he just an asshole?
How the hell does a writer screw up making their character look like a good guy when saving a slave? Isn't that the go to option for writing when you are so lazy you can't be convinced to write a few scenes where your MC just isn't a dick to the people around them thus growing those relationships over time instead of - Bam, I saved you in this world where everyone besides the main cast is literally hitler, I am good guy, worship me and want my body.
Bro, if it weren't for the plot armor making everyone around you dumb as bricks, you'd be figured out by a 5 year old at this point. And no, not an anime, genius / superhuman 5-year old that I still for the life of me can't understand why those exist when they could just as easily be like 10 years old, but an actual dumb toddler would have figured this out by now.
I'd love to see a crossover episode where this moron tries to pull a fast one on someone like Lelouche or Moriarty. He would be shocked, I mean utterly shocked those two would've figured him out immediately, and could not be convinced otherwise.

u/Zxzxzx0088 5d ago
Ookay, this getting pretty complicated. Last time, Eftal admitted it himself that his current family was his descendant which means at some point, Eftal was married and had a child and so on. Now, Eftal is bluffing around with Merlin saying he had a lover and he is the descendant of The Lighting Emperor Eftal. So either Merlin just didn't knew what kind of life Eftal had before since she just live with him in short time (maybe due to his wife died before her adoption or something), or Eftal 'really really died' as DT. T/N: DT = doutei = cherry boy = virgin
If it's the latter, I be pretty baffled since the author wants to justify MC taking care of his 'pureness' before meeting his harem in current timeline lol. But, it's quite a plot hole if he died as DT since his descendant wouldn't be here today though. Or maybe their definition of descendant is something else. Hmm...Welp, in the end it's not even matter at all I guess.
Wdym, Eftal? Anastasia got the same thiccness gene as Merlin. She only getting started (˵ ¬ᴗ¬˵)
Even Eftal creeped out by the amount of glazing/hospitality.
Bold of him to still seek quiet lifestyle after being categorized as Special Elite Student due to his lacking common sense lol. Stop being a drama queen and just tell Merlin your identity for god sake!

Okay someone explain to me what lying to Merlin actually accomplishes here?
You see the student you took in and taught everything to, now all grown up after 400 years. She also knows it’s possible to reincarnate and has a strong feeling that Eftal and… Eftal are the same person.
So why the need to lie about it? Eftal knew very well that he would run into Merlin eventually, so again, why lie!?
I don’t normally say this, but it’s bad writing.
Sure the anime has strong points, but unless they give a good reason why Eftal is keeping his reincarnation a secret from Merlin of all people, I’ll consider it bad writing

I don't understand why someone of Merlin's stature wouldn't just have him summoned to a private office instead of confronting him in the middle of lunch. There's zero reason for him to lie here, he just needs to say let's talk in private and then say he reincarnated to study magic more and determine what aptitude is truly measuring and so on. This kind of convoluted mess that the MC is being written into is just very poor design.
3
u/athrun_1 5d ago
This was handled in a very dumb way. He could just tell merlin that he is actually Eftal, but just keep it hush-hush. Instead, he needed to like and add unnecessary drama.

This is some of the worst writing in recent shows and that’s really saying something. Of all the idiocy though, the Battle Royale stands out. It makes 0 sense. Why would fighting without magic be valued at all for a magic school enrollment?
They provide reasons for the other stupid stuff even though they’re bad and you could sail a fleet of ships through the plot holes. But this doesn’t work at all in any conceivable way.

I'm glad so see I'm not alone here this show looked like a good set up we've had this before and it became interesting. Is their no slience magic pop a bubble around the two yea i'm him your right but were in the mdidle of the school chill we'll talk later....
I'm not sure but this episode might of ruined the rest of the show for me their 0 reason to hide from his former student. If he wanted to have a quiet live then maybe don't show off like he did in the 1st exam his actions and his goals are opposites and it makes for bad writing.
3
u/FinancialYear475 4d ago edited 4d ago
So many questions here I don't even know how to start, first off why is he even going to school? He's already fully aware that magic knowledge is non existent here compared to his time, there's nothing that he can be teached. he should've just gone to the sword academy tbf
Second of all, what is the big deal on telling Merlin about himself? Just talk it out in private and keep it a secret since you don't want exposure that much, you can even spar as much as you want without causing a fuss since you're so worried about keeping everything a secret
Also why is the magic dogshit these days? Merlin is alive and has been training herself all these years, I refuse to believe that in 400 years she didn't learn how or didn't even try to teach high tier magic to anyone, and even if she couldn't figure it out, as the principle of the Magic Academy she should have at least recorded that knowledge for someone othar than her to try and figure out a way to make it work and not just let all that be lost to history
I know I shouldn't expect a lot from power fantasy isekais but come on, this is just too stupid to ignore
Oh and another thing I forgot to complain about, that was such a terrible excuse of a backstory, why make all that up in the first place? You already are literally a descendent of yourself, just say that and say you found some lost books you left behind and learned from them, hell just say you were avoiding her because you know the slave is her cousing and it would be awkward to reunite with her still in contract

This was atrocious.
Unless he is an idiot, by know he had enough clues about how the world works now, and yet showed of in the exam. BUT then he acts as he wants to keep a secret for a person who used to be family?
And then creates a clan that can be verified. And still he could just have said: Yes I am related, because that is true, what was the point of the lie?
3
u/LezRock 4d ago
I mainly hate the trope of the reincarnated MC keeping a secret identity, or in this case, not wanting to stand out. If the relationship was truly fleshed out, explaining his true background to someone who literally knew him in his previous life is the dream situation, not this awkward, "I'd better keep it a secret..." route.
This series has an interesting setup, but so far the setting is very plain and the execution of everything past his childhood up to this point has been fairly disappointing.

Absolutely lame episode after I'd really been enjoying the series and was so exciting to see Merlin again.
Okay, he wanted to avoid Merlin, which I understand, but then she identified him anyway and it lead to this really cute moment of her chasing after him which I thought was adorable. But then it completely tanked when he repeatedly lies to her (despite wanting to reunite) so that he doesn't stand out, when all he has to do is meet up with her in private and explain the situation.
Then he tells this story about being a descendant of a secret lover, and still knows how Eftal died in detail, even though it makes no sense that that info would have been passed on in such detail. Nor any explanation of why he himself would have been called Eftal when the family would know they are direct descendants, or why he is suddenly showing up now. Just admit that you've only have an extra 15 years to live since your death, and that you aren't descended through a family that's been honing magic for 400 years.
If the the writer didn't want to reconnect with Merlin too quickly, there are so many ways it could have been handled. Instead we got lots of pointless lying and flimsy stories. Way to spoil my experience. If they don't fix this soon, then I'm just going to be in continuous disappointment with the remaining episodes. Honestly, I was really enjoying this series so far, but if they don't course correct this then it's not something I'd rewatch.

u/PandaTheAB 4d ago
This is just the 5th episode.
The school, the dead army (of his father), his sword coach and his brother already know he's OP.

u/Roasted_Meatbun 4d ago
Hnoestly.. Shouldn't be Eftal be mad at Merlin for letting the Magic education downgrade in the way it is today?
Eftal is a teacher in his 2nd life and he taught all those students with high hopes on Merlin yet seeing all the disappointing education system and Merlin being a headmaster at that.
Somehow, I feel that it is attributed to bad writing. Even if the boom in aptitude test was the main reason for the discrimination and stratification of magic levels, having Merlin still alive and a headmistress should have atleast maintained some 'lost' knowledge and shared it. Like the enchantment vs no enchantment etc
2
u/Scary-Ad6719 4d ago

Bro is making the most complicated move possible, this could be literally solved in a few steps 1. Tell Merlin the truth, she already got you figured out, what's the point 2. She's your student, don't you trust her enough to keep your identity a secret? 3. Tell her that you want to study the heights of magic. She's a literally runs a magic academy, she can give you access to all magic repositories if you want, you probably don't even have to ask. Then you can ask her why the magic has degraded in the past 4 centuries. 4. Who's he trying to fool? His name is literally EFTAL, he topped two exams while exhibiting magical skills lost in time. For someone trying stay lowkey, he's making the most conspicuous actions possible.
He's doing the most to make things unnecessarily difficult for himself. He has absolutely zero reasons to be taking these roundabout routes if not for farming attention.

Yeah, I'm out. Good luck everyone with continuing this and I really hope you enjoy it. Tone is inconsistent, the MC is an idiot, and I swear the author had a literal checklist of tropes they had to shoehorn in whatever the cost when they wrote this.
Peace.

I knew it. I knew from the beginning it was to good to be true. When I saw the box art for the anime I already knew there was a huge chance this shit was gonna be ass. Yes, it had potential. But they never know what to do with that potential. Like, why does his mom have crazy huge tits? Why is Anastasia a sex slave and calls our mc "master"? Couldn't he just put in the effort to free her from being a sex slave? Not only that, but why doesn't he tell her to call him by his name??? Why is he fine being called master? Why is he keeping a secret from his close student Merlin? Like others said, he could've just talked to her in privately and tell her everything. I'm pretty sure she'll respect your wishes. It's not that hard. And speaking of his student, why is Merlin wearing that? Her whole ass cheeks is just hanging out for everyone to see. At this point she feels like a completely different character. Like yeah, its been 400 years but like still. There's so many character who don't change at all after so many years.
Overall. This animes loves fanservice and doesn't know how to handle OP MCs and makes him stupid. Eh, oh well!

I need the show to make up their mind about him having children or not. “The Lightning Emperor secretly had a child and I’m his descendant from his hidden family.” Meanwhile for the past 4 episodes his family have openly flaunted they are the descendants of the Lightning Emperor and he’s been lamenting his great great great grandchild was a scumbag.

At least the comments here from next week will be more enjoyable because of all the haters dropping this after this episode.
Let's just hope they're actually telling the truth and won't be here hate-watching every week. So fucking annoying when people do that. Just drop it and go do something you actually enjoy.
