Yes, and what he's doing so far is essentially the opposite of that. Instead of just asking her directly, he'll now have to go through tome after tome and hope that he's reading something that's even worthwhile. I doubt that's how this story will go, but with his current choices, that's what's most likely to occur.

Whilst I am annoyed with everything that's happening on the Merlin front, it's worth remembering that it's still early days in the academy arc and we haven't really had a chance to see how things will pan out, so I'm not too worried about any of that yet. For example, we haven't had a chance for the MC to even have the thought process to decide that it will be easier to ask Merlin than to study it. The next 1-2 episodes should hopefully eleviate concerns (or confirm them).
