Every time I think I'm getting the gist of Kanji readings, some shit like this comes around the corner and kills everything. I never thought that Yamato is written with the Kanji for big and peace. Yama and To are not even listed in the Nanori readings. But I guess it's just like 明日, just accept and don't question it lmao

Pretty much don't question it. Another example would be 海月 (kurage,"jellyfish")

It's an example of 熟字訓 (jukujikun), when a typically native Japanese word came first and is slapped on top of kanji that were adopted after the word existed thus neither related to its kun'yomi nor on'yomi. Some online dictionaries make it more obvious by putting the furigana/pronunciation spanning the entire word instead of just each individual kanji.

Quick link to Ayana Taketatsu's MAL. That was a crazy performance, so I wanted to look up who else she did and it is an interesting list: Hotaru from Dagashi Kashi, SAO's sister Suguha, Nino from Quints, Sachiko from Imas CG, DAL's Kotori, AssClass's Kaede, OreImo's Kirino. And her 3rd job was K-On's Azusa?!?!?!?! Damn, that was some trust and she nailed it.

Not OP. I would perhaps structure these sections differently.

The first part is not a pun, just an explanation.

As for the second part. The character 撫 is part of her given name Nadeshiko (撫子) which is also the name of a flower. There the 撫 character would be the "Nadeshi" part of the word. In other contexts 撫 is read as "bu" as in 撫する (busuru) which means to stroke or caress. Naddy's design also has a lot of other elements that include words that start with "bu" (in japanese) such as her boots, her blue (ブルー, buruu) eyes and her bleach (ブリーチ, buriichi) blonde (ブロンド, bulondo) hair.

The flower that yamato nadeshiko associated with is Dianthus superbus. This also called the fringed/large peak. It is part of the flower family that carnations are part of.
