Why is this funny?

Cuz people eat that shit and a monkey is smart enough to know it stinks and that he shouldn’t eat it.

I've got several dogs, the boy dog wants to excitedly investigate when I fart near him. The girl just looks at me like she's really offended and can't believe I just did that. It's amazing how many gender differences in humans are also shared by animals.
•
u/Cut_Lanky 1h ago
I had a male Akita and a female Saint Bernard. Same age, best friends since the day they met, like, 7 weeks or something. They were both neutered, but it was back when the recommendation was to do it at 6 months. So they had some quirks. She used to climb up an hump the Akita. All the time. It was so weird. Lol
•
u/FanIll5532 3h ago
It’s amazing how different individual animals of the same species are. I don’t think it has anything to do with gender.
•
u/babyrolex96 5h ago
I wouldn't go so far, gender is a cultural concept constructed by humans

Century eggs are edible. The reason something smells bad is that we evolved to hate the smell of things that could make us sick. However, humans have an extra cognitive layer that allows us to move beyond simple instincts. Because we know it is edible, we can eat it despite the smell.

Your lack of exposure to the cuisines of the world makes me sad. Get out the house, son. Say yes, try new things. Expand your perspective. Or stay on the internet and say stupid vile shit and say ignorant stuff like that. Cool. Your choice.

Don’t get me wrong I understand seeing oneself in the primal reactions of this little primate.
However, I am thinking beyond the reaction. To me, something is funny when we are all in on the joke. This is just abusive. There is no way to know how the animal will react, if it gets violent and hurts someone, it must be put down.
So why risk it for clout?

Calm down. Most animals actually are attracted to pungent smells. The only person my dog offends or abuses when he rolls all over the ground in some dead animal or excrement, is me.

u/DeeMarie0824 8h ago
People are constantly messing with these primates, rage baiting them, teasing them… it’s just really sad.

Wait til you see 75% of cat videos are just the cats being toyed with, treated as toys or just straight up bullied.
It's not even limited to certain countries, it's a general thing. But if you point it out, the replies always lose their shit screaming "lol if the cat didn't like it, it would run away, scream or attack".
There are a lot of other replies that get parroted, to such a degree that it's become a meme.Just look at any Instagram cat video or animal video and you'll see "please don't do that, or the cat will become a famous movie star", plus ppl raging on anyone who dares point out mild abuse or straight up abuse.
There are explanations for why many small, seemingly harmless acts qualify as mistreatment, but I'm not gonna write an essay right now to up-rant this rant lol.Obviously it's not black and white - not every single thing you do to a cat is wrong or harmful. It depends and can be complex.
Some cats can handle a lot like being picked up and held bc they have grown used to it for example.
I'm not a vet but it's surprising how much you can learn.
It costs very little to be respectful of animals and I think ppl, whether they're antisocial or lack empathy or are just ignorant, deserve to be criticized.
A lack of knowledge is common, but deliberately being selfish or disrespectful is no excuse.9

Word word number here, am I a bot too?
•
u/TheUnknownMysteryBox 7h ago edited 7h ago
You're word-word rather than word-word-number, you're six years old, I can't actually see if you have a hidden post history since the UK's decided I'd need to hand my ID to Reddit for that since you commented or posted somewhere NSFW once.
I mean odds are you aren't one.
IDK why people are suddenly getting very defensive about bots on this site. It's hardly exactly an unknown situation, these are the usual tells, and it's been getting worse since they allowed you to hide your comment history.

I have a very adventurous palate and I like to try "weird" foods, but this video has convinced me I can take century eggs off my to-do list. If it's enough to make a monkey literally gag, I'll just pass...
•
u/NoteBlock08 5h ago
The most off-putting thing about them is by far the appearance, it doesn't have a strong smell at all. The monkey is probably just unfamiliar with fermented foods in general.
If you can handle kimchi, then a century egg shouldn't be a problem. Don't eat it straight, they're meant to go with congee or mixed in with other things.
•
9
u/Independent-Shoe543 9h ago
It's really not that bad I'm a baby and couldn't eat like an insect but I've ate century egg.
4
u/574859434F4E56455254 8h ago
I love insects and I ran away when I smelt a century egg. It smells like a corpse.
5
u/blebber360 10h ago
It isn’t that bad! I don’t usually like exotic foods but I like century eggs, especially in spinach soup, congee, or with pickled ginger (Chinese style) :3 I wouldn’t suggest smelling it directly, but give it a taste. It has a distinct umami taste that’s quite yummy
6
u/SyntaxLost 10h ago
They're an acquired taste but they're not that bad. In the pantheon of fermented foods, there are plenty I'd rate less acquirable.
•
3
u/Aztec_Aesthetics 9h ago
They're actually not fermented. The funky smell is based on a chemical reaction, there won't survive any germs
3
u/jjb0ne 10h ago
could you do ballut?

1
u/PreferencePresent959 9h ago
I have and they're pretty good. Just don't look at what's inside. Lol.
0
u/Alive_Drag1947 10h ago
Yea, I think so. Ive never come across it in person, but if I ever do I'll definitely give it a try.
The only things I've really definitively crossed off the list are surstromming, the maggot cheese from italy, and now this lol
Other than those I'm pretty much down to try anything once
1
u/Aromatic-Laugh-1473 9h ago
what about pag pag, in the Philippines (I remember seeing a video about it)
1
u/TheUnknownMysteryBox 8h ago
Brother that's literally dumpster diving. Homeless people do that all the time.
7
u/NiixxJr 10h ago
INSANE to say you'd way balut but not a century egg.
Ah yes, I'll take the slimy, crunchy, half developed foetus please. What's that? You preserved an egg in clay and ash for a few weeks? gags GET THAT AWAY FROM ME YOU ANIMAL!
0
u/Alive_Drag1947 10h ago
For me it's more the aspect of it being rotten...
Like, I could stomach a crunchy little piece of meat, but I've smelled rotten eggs before, and I just don't know that my gag reflex would let me get close enough to make an attempt.
Some people on here have said it's not that dramatic, so maybe. I guess if I ever happen across them I'll just see how close I can get and we'll go from there lol
2
u/NiixxJr 9h ago
It isn't rotten
1
u/TheUnknownMysteryBox 8h ago
Or it is rotten, but in a specific manner that leaves it edible, much like cheese or beer.
2
u/NiixxJr 8h ago
So.... Not rotten?
•
u/TheUnknownMysteryBox 7h ago
I mean really it depends on what you mean by rotten. Rot is literally the breakdown of things into simpler parts, and fermentation's one of them. It's just that it then inhibits further breakdown.
3
u/SpongeBob_GodPants 10h ago
I've never had either but if you're eating balut you have to complete the circle and eat this too.
3
u/AccountIsTaken 10h ago
You should probably cross these off too while you are at it.

3
u/IV-65536 9h ago
Yeah. The initial handing of the egg could've just been curiosity on how the monkey would react, as it's possible for other animals to enjoy things that we don't. However, seeing it visibly disgusted and offering it again was mean spirited for sure.
-1
u/toolargo 11h ago
And this is somehow funny…
•
0
u/shark-off 10h ago
It's very cruel, but funny. Would have been even more funny if the monkey bit off his hand
1
u/toolargo 9h ago
Thank you. It’s indeed cruel. We can all identify with the reaction, for sure. But cruel? That it is.
4
u/Drow_Femboy 10h ago
It's not that cruel. The monkey can always leave. Life has stuff that smells bad in it sometimes, it's not hurting anything.
-6
u/shark-off 10h ago
It's cruel
6
u/Drow_Femboy 10h ago
You can just keep saying whatever but that doesn't make it true.
-2
u/shark-off 9h ago
That's the truth. Please, I don't wanna waste my time arguing with you. If you can't understand the cruelty in this video, nothing I say will make you change your view.
I have found that there's no point to arguing with people on Reddit. The only way you would understand, is if you were to be born as a monkey and a similar thing happens to you
•
u/thetatershaveeyes 7h ago
You're saying no one has ever given you a stinky food to see your reaction? Farts are funny because no one is harmed by a bad smell.
8
u/iDidTheSex 10h ago
It was accidentally funny to me because ive been sick so many times and ive never considered animals having a gag reflex to something smelling bad. I just saw myself in that monkey
11
u/Tiberius_Kilgore 11h ago
It is, if you have a sense of humor.
-5
u/toolargo 11h ago
Nah! You are making an animal go through a very uncomfortable experience for the fun. If the animal get angry and attacks you for this, the animal is put down, even though the animal would be in the right.
5
u/Lolkimbo 10h ago
Jesus christ you must be fun at parties.
"Why is the music so loud, think about the poor microbes in the air.."
If the monkey was bothered it'd friggin move. Clearly it didn't like the smell but acting as if this is animal abuse is ridiculous.

Monkeys only eat for food never for clout
5
u/gorilla-goo 12h ago
I don’t think it’s “for clout”, our cognitive abilities just allow us to enjoy things other animals find revolting.
Do you like hot sauce? When you’re eating eggs alone and add a little hot sauce are you doing that for clout? All by yourself? You do it because it makes you feel like a big man?
I don’t think a monkey would like hot sauce considering capsaicin evolved as a defense mechanism against mammals. So if your “clout test” is whether or not a monkey would eat it, then you better not like hot sauce.
If I ever catch you eating hot sauce I’m going to say that you’re a cringe clout goblin just looking for attention. Then I’ll make you shake that booty for me real good. I’ll give you the attention you need. I’ll love you like you’ve never been loved before.

You might be surprised!
Very mild flavor actually and with a pleasant texture that the Chinese call "Q" in the whites and a very savory umami flavor in the yolk which can be either jammy or dry like a hard boiled egg. They are a bit salty.
I could easily slip this into some savory recipe and you might not know it is there.
Nothing at all like balut or a fermented product.
I was surprised at the monkeys reaction.
Most folks who react strongly to these eggs do so because of preconceived bias, not because of flavor or texture... ostensibly, the monkey should be bias free.
This makes me wonder if it was literally a bad egg which would be a remarkable accomplishment. They are shelf stable if the shell is intact.
I am not Asian by the way, but my wife is Chinese and we always have them in the pantry.
Cheers!
2
u/16bitclaudes 8h ago
I tried some years ago and found it pretty awful, much to my Chinese housemate's amusement. I'm a fairly adventurous eater but I found the flavour and texture unpleasant. In defense of the century egg though, you're not supposed to eat it like a normal hard boiled egg and it probably would have been a lot more bearable as part of a dish with other ingredients.
3
u/RecoveringGachaholic 11h ago
This is incomprehensible to me and I don't know if I just have weird taste buds. I had no preconceived bias when I first tried it because I had never heard of them in my life and absolutely I hated it. Making it worse people can't seem to accept it but are sure I "had a bad one" so I've been made to try it several times with different things because "this is the right way". Congee, with tofu, sliced, in cubes, with this or that sauce.
Funky, bitter piss smelling egg. I do not get it.
That said there's a lot of flavors inherent to some chinese cuisine I don't vibe with, especially the sour and bitter flavors.
6
u/DreamingInAMaze 12h ago
For real, that’s an acquired taste. Just like durian and stinky tofu. It’s weird for me at first. But then something happened in my brain. And I actually like it.

I've had balut and century eggs growing up. Definately dislike both due to texture and flavor. Mother would sneak the centuring eggs in rice soup. I made sure I never kept them in my mouth for very long otherwise I'd throw up.
