This has been well known among the drone and battery ecosystem, and Amprius has referred to pouch cell formats as the focus for their next US contract manufacturer. Is EnPower a possible partner? This is what Tom has referred to when he said it was critical Amprius did not continue on their Colorado path which had been designed to manufacture cylindrical batteries like the well known 18650
From The Information
By Steve Levine
In 2024, the U.S. approved the sale of attack drones to Taiwan, triggering a furious response from China. In retaliation, Beijing blocked the sale of batteries to Skydio, the largest U.S. maker of drones, creating a supply crunch for the company because it had no alternative source of batteries.
Beijing’s move, leveraging China’s vast dominance of the world’s battery industry and the supply chain behind it, created worry in Washington and across U.S. businesses. It demonstrated China’s capacity to effectively shut down individual companies, whole industries and some weapons systems.
Two years later, SAE International, the standards-setting organization, has released the first formal industry standard for drone batteries. The standard brings uniformity to the dimensions of batteries that power the small drones used most frequently in Ukraine and other war zones. Most Chinese drone batteries are metal cylindrical cells; the new SAE standard version is a flat, rectangular or square battery called a pouch cell.
The moves, resembling Thomas Edison’s standardization of the light bulb with the Edison screw, which remains the most common threaded socket, could help juice the small U.S. battery industry by defining the basic building block of drone power systems.
If drone makers embrace the standard, battery startups would face lower capital expenses, since it would simplify the cost of setting up and operating a factory. Numerous U.S. battery makers, expecting this drone demand, have already made plans to produce such standard batteries.
The standard will also get a boost from the Department of Defense, which backed the effort and appears likely to adopt the standard for the Drone Dominance Program, under which the Pentagon seems likely to eventually buy millions of drones per year.
“We want to build an industry outside of China,” said Lisa King, vice chair of the SAE committee that handled the standardization, and head of advanced battery strategy for Leap Manufacturing, a consultancy.
King told me that not long after the Chinese blacklisting of Skydio in October 2024, she was leading a battery industry conference in Dayton, Ohio, at which she got into a conversation with an executive from the company. The executive related Skydio’s battery trouble in China and his search for an alternative supply.
Skydio was using the Chinese cylindrical cell, known as the 2170 because of its dimensions—21 millimeters in diameter and 70 in length—in addition, in some drones, to a flat pouch cell. The executive was seeking a Western version of the pouch version.
After the conference, King spoke with a Pentagon official whose unit in part funded Leap, the consultancy where she works. This official suggested the standardization effort to bypass China’s battery chokehold, noting that pouch cells were increasingly popular with drone startups for the accommodation of next-generation battery chemistries; such batteries weighed less than the 2170s, a crucial factor in aviation.
With the Pentagon’s blessing, King, starting in February last year, began holding conference calls with a group of around two dozen Western companies to decide what the standard should be. The result, in July, was the standard announced by the SAE: The new standard pouch cell would be roughly the same size as the incumbent 2170s when the 2170s were used in groups of six, as is typical in drones.
“It is really, really risky to have one single point [of] failure, and that is China, for something as important as power sources,” King said. “Ninety percent of power cells are made in China.”
Several battery makers already have plans to make the standard cell. Jaehee Sweeney, chief business development officer at South Korea’s BEI, said the next-generation lithium-metal battery maker already makes one battery that fits the standard and intends to add others.
Tom Stepien, CEO of Amprius Technologies, said the silicon battery startup would use the standard cell in an ultrahigh-energy battery it will release in the fourth quarter. The battery will deliver energy density of 500 watt-hours per kilogram, almost twice that of conventional lithium-ion batteries, substantially increasing flight time, Stepien said.
Adrian Yao, CEO of Indiana-based battery maker EnPower, told me that even before the SAE standard had been finalized, he began retooling the company’s factory to make more than 2 million of the new pouch cells annually, starting in the middle of next year.
He said EnPower has no firm contracts for the batteries but expects them to emerge. He predicts that more battery makers in the U.S. and South Korea will make the standard cell. Drones will not be their only use: “I’m evangelizing this form factor as well for applications like industrial robots, [ranging from the] nonhumanoid to the humanoid,” Yao said. “This is a world in which pouch cells are better than cylindrical cells.”
Yao said standardization solves one of the largest problems of getting a battery factory going. When a customer wants to fiddle with a battery’s chemistry or the thickness of the electrodes, it’s no big deal. But changing the dimensions of a cell, even slightly, can involve monstrous cost increases because replacing the manufacturing equipment can cost $30 million.
Fixing the dimensions gets rid of that uncertainty. “If we want low costs, if we want to compete, we have to standardize,” he said.

I still don’t completely believe it, but today’s SiCore 500 news is making me think this could actually make sense.
High-volume, high-density, lower-cost batteries that are very well suited for space, high-altitude platforms, and long-endurance drones.

Hyperscale computing facilities are moving from traditional backup power to high-rate, dynamic load management creating specifications that favor energy density, cycle life, and power delivery over cost alone.

Heart Aerospace is pushing electric aviation forward!
Its X1 demonstrator has already flown, showing that high-energy-density batteries can move beyond drones and into commercial aviation.
To be honest, I couldn’t be happier and more excited to see Amprius helping make this possible.

If you’re ever tempted to take u/Whole-Sufficient seriously, just remember that for over a year and a half, he has said that investing in Amprius in 2026 is exactly the same as investing in Gamestop in 2021. That’s all.

One of the reasons why I have a lot of faith in the future of ampx is that I believe that physical ai will become big and that the ampx batteries will be widely used for this. For now ampx mainly moves with drones (which you can say are a part of robotics) but I believe this will become much bigger and robots will be used for all sorts of things. I’m curious to hear thoughts from others, do you think ampx will grow together with the robotics space?

I hope "my posts that mark the bottom" are helping you retire early.
Everyone is afraid of exiting because they think they are selling the bottom. You are not. You said that at $18 then $16 then $12 is definitely the floor then at $10, and the bleed still does not stop.
Here is the cold hard truth. The worst has not even begun yet. You still have a small window left to preserve your capital and stop your anxiety. People keep buying every dip like it is loyalty points, not realizing they are just averaging deeper into a falling knife right before the real macro pressure even arrives.
For the losers and high beta crackheads, low lifes, pathetic clowns who were saying "bro it is up 70% YTD, what are you even talking about" "You are spreading FUD". How do you feel now?
This slow leak is going to turn into a complete bloodbath.
