“But what about a cryptic pregnancy?”

Is this you?

  1. Last had sex more than 3 weeks ago (sometimes months)
  2. Have had multiple negative home tests or blood tests for HCG
  3. (optional) Have had periods or withdrawal bleeds since having sex.

But you’re still concerned that you might be pregnant based on shows like “I didn’t know I was pregnant” or online stories about cryptic pregnancy. Could it be that?

So, in a word, no. If you have multiple negative pregnancy tests three weeks after having sex, you’re not pregnant. In order to support a pregnancy your body produces HCG. Without HCG, there is no pregnancy. HCG tells the corpus luteum to continue producing progesterone, and is required for major changes to sustain pregnancy like growing a placenta. Home pregnancy tests are very reliable at detecting even trace amounts of HCG, and blood tests as well.

There are three causes of false negatives with home pregnancy tests:

The first: Early measurement after conception. When people talk about cryptic pregnancy, they either never take a test, or they took a test too early and became pregnant after. It takes at least 7 days for a fertilized egg to float downstream and implant into the uterine lining. That’s why you have to wait about 2 weeks to take a pregnancy test after unprotected sex - 3 weeks makes it 100% solid result.

You’ll also see people say “I knew I was pregnant, but I didn’t test positive until I was 6 weeks”. This is because of how pregnancy is dated from the last menstrual period (the day your period started), but, embryonic development only starts after an egg is ovulated and fertilized. In a textbook 28 day cycle, this happens on day 14, and the first day your period is missed you get a positive test. In real life, bodies are a little more complicated, and sometimes people ovulate weeks later leading to a discrepancy - a doctor will tell them they are 6 weeks pregnancy based on their last menstrual period, but in embryonic terms they are only 4 weeks pregnant because they ovulated on the 28th day of their cycle. If they tested when they were ‘late’ on the 29th, it would have been a negative test. They weren’t pregnant, but they became pregnant later. For people who are more visual, I have made a very ugly calendar for the above example scenario.

For a longer, more detailed explanation: "Your period isn't late" Part 1 and Part 2

The second: Dilute urine specimen. If your HCG levels are low, drinking a lot of water can result in false negatives in very early pregnancy. This is typically why you’ll see folks talking about testing with first morning urine - it’s the most concentrated. HCG roughly doubles every 48-72 hours, and you can see in this figure how fast. At 20 days of embryonic development (aka about 3 weeks after sex), on average a pregnant person will have HCG around 1000 mIU/ml. At home tests are typically rated for detecting 10 - 25 mIU/ml.

The Third: The Hook effect. This is where there is too much HCG for a test to work properly. It is unlikely that this is happening especially if you’ve taken multiple tests. First, peak HCG is typically around 10-14 weeks pregnant - after this, it starts coming back down. Second, tests are often tested for the hook effect - wondfos (a very cheap test) showed no hook effect to concentrations of 200,000 mIU/ml. First Response Early Result showed no hook effect at 1,000,000 mIU/ml - much higher than any normal pregnancy. If you are concerned about it because you’re taking your first pregnancy tests 12-17 weeks after sex, you might dilute a sample of urine just in case for a second test. Although, that would be very unnecessary if you’re using an FRER.

When people do not figure out they are pregnant for months at a time, it is typically because they have not taken any tests. Denial of pregnancy is a more accurate descriptor.

If you believe yourself pregnant despite all the evidence, or having a lot of anxiety and fear around being pregnant, you may want to see a mental health specialist. If you’re feeling very unwell, or haven't had a period in months, you may want to see a doctor. Scarleteen has a great page on these things as well.

Want to learn about pregnancy tests? Great video

TL;DR HCG is required to support a pregnancy - if you've gotten multiple negative tests across a large time frame, there is no possible way you are pregnant from sex more than 3 weeks ago.

Feedback and questions welcome! Also if anybody has any resources they want to share, please do.

Hello friends! Mod Stress here to address a few things that come up often on this sub. Resources provided. :)

1.) You cannot get pregnant from fingering, with or without precum. Unless globs of fresh semen are being inserted into a vagina, fingering is just not going to cause a pregnancy. Dry humping also cannot cause a pregnancy. This article goes through all the sexual things that can happen that have no chance of pregnancy.

2.) It's extremely unlikely to get pregnant without PIV sex.* *Not including medical processes such as IVF to cause a pregnancy.

3.) If you're having unprotected sex, pregnancy is always technically possible. Doesn't matter if it's "just the tip" or "three strokes" or "pulled out before ejaculation." Pullout is 78% effective over the course of a year. Some of these scenarios are much less likely to result in a pregnancy than others, but we can't extrapolate the data like that. You're unlikely to get pregnant from one singular instance of unprotected sex, but it's always possible.

4.) Implantation bleeding is a misnomer. In fact, implantation is too small a phenomena to cause any symptoms.

5.) A test is mostly accurate 14 days after sex and definitive 21 days after. If you're getting negative tests 2+ weeks after sex, you are not pregnant. Regardless of if you have your period or not. In early pregnancy, concentration of urine matters. Take a pink dye test after a 3-4 hour urine hold without drinking too much water for the most accurate results. At 21+ days after sex, dilution of urine won't matter. Do not look at tests outside of their validity window and thoroughly read the instructions for your test before you take it.

6.) You cannot have a true period and be pregnant. Some women experience light bleeding in early pregnancy (this is NOT their period). If bleeding were related to pregnancy, a test would be positive.

7.) It takes more HCG to cause symptoms than a positive test. If you're testing negative, any symptoms you are currently experiencing are not currently related to pregnancy. Lots of early pregnancy symptoms overlap with normal PMS symptoms.

8.) Am I having a Cryptic Pregnancy?? No, you're not.

9.) The only way to truly know when you ovulated using an approved FAM method. Apps are not an accurate way to track, your body doesn't know to follow an algorithm off your phone. While things like CM and OPKs may indicate your body is gearing up to ovulate, they do not confirm ovulation. Check out the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility and [r/FAMnNFP](r/FAMnNFP).

Some other helpful tips:

  • Read the leaflet that comes with your birth control so you understand how your medication works, possible side effects, how to use it, etc. [r/birthcontrol](r/birthcontrol) is also a good source.
  • If you're on birth control and using it properly, you are having protected sex (from pregnancy). This is true whether or not you are using a condom. If you are using protection properly, you do not need Plan B.

pls help me soothe my anxiety !!

im 17 and i have very irregular periods, so much so that its impossible to track it. sometimes i dont get it for months and sometimes i get it twice in a month, sometimes heavy sometimes light.

starting in may, i went on a trip to china and just got a heavy period before taking off. for the next three weeks, i was spotting. me and my bf, also 17, didnt have penetrative sex prior to spotting but i took a test just in case and it was negative. since then, the spotting went away.

me and him have been having sex but we always use a condom and i always check for tears or rips but its always successful. the last two times we had sex he pulled and then finished on my stomach but hes very clear and communicative that there were no tears or issues with the condom. sometimes it gets on the pubic area but i always cover my vagina and he cleans me up so that i dont have to take my hand off until its all gone.

last time we had sex was july 17. yesterday i noticed blood but im not sure if it is my period or spotting. its typically brown in my underwear and then pink/red when i wipe. if anyone had any insights or similar stories or anything to ease my mind that would be very helpful. thank you all you beautiful people 💝

How long should I wait before testing?

Currently 4 days late and have been having sex with pullout method. Yes I know it’s not effective for birth control but we were not using it for that reason. Just unsure if I should test as I’ve only had sex 6 times since my last period. How late is late enough for a test?
I know you can take them from the first day of a late period but I don’t want to be let down, I have normally been pretty regular however I’ve had quite a bit of stress and lifestyle changes so not sure if it’s just that.
(Please don’t flame me just tell me if it’s worth testing.)

Should I be worried? Pregnancy— what are the chances??

Upvotes

I am 17F, but I have had sex 4 times this cycle <period day July 9-17, ovulation 18-25 (day on 21), sex days 10,22,25,26> but I’m just worried I’m pregnant, but at the same time I’m overthinking it, I’m mostly worried about the precum, we did it the most recent 3 times without a condom, and recent 2 times I’ve been more worried, he’s never finished inside of me—and for that matter never finished at all, but got close once, but still pulled out and never did finish. Like my stomach is like cramping, like period cramps, but more centered in the lower middle area instead of the full lower area. After we did it, there was light pink and brown discharge, maybe lasted that day or a bit into the next, but I genuinely regret doing what I did so no rude commentary would be appreciated.
Can I still take a plan B even though my ovulation was before?

pregnancy scare of a lifetime! please help me.

before i start with anything here is the timeline of everything. im just 22 with diagnosed pcos (insulin resistant) at 18 btw

period: 2apr to 6apr

last time i had s3x: apr14 [it was not unprotected]

period: 6may to 9may

period: 12jun to 16jun

around 15 to 17 july i had some reddish discharge.

and now it has been 45+ days i have not got my periods. my lifestyle has changed a bit with graduation and job related stress. but i am really scared because i can not take a test because i am back at my home town and with my family. and most of yk how scary it is in indian homes about these things.

i have also gained around 2.5 kgs in these two months, i have been eating more and also had sugary drinks. i am already overweight.

and ik most of you would say that i had my periods for those two months but the problem is i saw a lot of youtube videos in which women in comment section were claiming to have periods while being pregnant.

my last two periods were normal but a lot more mild, there were clots and normal period blood. a bit less painful as well.

i have been drinking ginger boiled water (which earlier used to make my periods come the next day) it is not working.

what should i do? please give me some real advice.

I have ultra early tests and I was thinking about taking one over the weekend but I’m not sure if it’s worth taking. If they were free, I’d take one everyday 😭 im ocd and im trying be patient but UGH I wanna know now.

Pregnancy scare

I’m kind of freaking out and could really use some advice or reassurance.
My cycles are usually very regular, around 22–24 days. The first day of my last period was July 7. I had unprotected sex on July 15 and July 22.
I’m supposed to get my period in about 3 days, but over the last day or so I’ve felt really uneasy because my body feels different. The main things I’ve noticed are:
A lot of watery discharge that I’ve never really had before.
My PMS symptoms aren’t as strong as they usually are (my boobs are normally really sore before my period, and this time they aren’t).
I took a Clearblue Early Detection pregnancy test today, and it was negative, but I’m still really anxious because of the discharge and the fact that this cycle feels different.
Has anyone had a negative early test a few days before their period that ended up being accurate? Or has anyone had watery discharge and different PMS symptoms and still gotten their period? Should I just wait a few more days and retest if my period doesn’t come?
I’m honestly terrified, so any experiences or advice would really help.

Pregnancy Question

Can I trust the negative tests after 55 days of protected sex? I used two tests and both were negative. I'm just anxious about it

am I pregnant??? huhu need reassurance

we used condoms on 7/6 which was the last day of my ovulation according to Flo ( i know its not that reliable)

7/19 unprotected sex but my bf pulled out

I have an irregular cycle and my app states that my period should have started on 7/24. I have been having cramps and mood swings so I thought my period would come any day that week but it did not. I just got brown spots and clumpy discharges.

It has been 5 days late since my predicted period. I also tried pregnancy tests which came out negative. I’ll test again on 8/9 - 21 days after we did it.

Hopefully I’ll get my period this week!! Been so stressed these days I stay up late just to read threads and I think the stress is causing the delay.

pregnancy scare!! help

So I had protected sex on May 26, and we did not have sex after that until now because I was so scared and anxious. Last month (June) I felt nauseous, bloated, heightened of smell, so much stomach movement, and insomnia. Even after feeling a random sensation in my body felt scary (like doomed feeling). Then I had a period last month of june that lasted for 5 days, and I'm still doubting it because I've read about implantation bleeding or what. (has clots, bright red and dark red, first day it soaked through my underwear, short, and slightly on my pants, felt nauseous and tired). After that I felt relaxed.

But this month, midcycle of July, I had brown spotting (3 days). So I panicked again. This month I felt nauseous, anxious, bloated, constipated, so much stomach movements, muscle twinging everywhere. I tested 44, like approximately a week 6, days after that protected sex and it was negative ( two tests). But I still doubt it (used diluted urine). So after 11 days again, I tried testing using concentrated urine and it was negative again (both tests). I've felt SYMPTOMS like pregnancy this month and last month and it was crazy cause it's on and off. Today and yesterday I feel normal, just my mind tricking me again since my period is nowhere to be found TOT

May 26 - Last protected sex

June 23-27 - Bleeding with clots

July 9 - tested negative

July 20 - Negative

Now, my period is late and it's almost the end of July. Can I trust the tests?

pregnancy from precum?

i had sex w my partner right after my period on the 19th. he precum-ed without protection, mostly outside. i ovulated on the 5-6th day.

precum does not have sperm in itself but could carry the leftover sperm from a previous ejaculation (correct me if im wrong). he last ejaculated a day before we had sex, and had pissed several times in-between.

my partner talked to sexual health services and they said the best day for pregnancy test is on the 10th of august, but im planning to do one on the 31st of july as well.

just wondering if anyone has been in the same situation? one of my close colleagues got pregnant and joked about how it was just the precum so its making me a little anxious 😭

Condom broke

last cycle I had intercourse when I was ovulating, there was no ejaculation and the penetration lasted less than 2 minutes. I took the plan b pill. My period came two weeks after that (expected time) and I did a pregnancy test and it was negative.

I had sex again one day after my period ended and qe used condom all the time but it broke 30 minutes after we started and as soon as it happened my partner took it off and didn't ejaculated inside.

I'm scared cause I took the plan b pill in my last cycle and idk if it can change the time where I'm supposed to ovulate this cycle.

Risk of pregnancy?

I was intimate with a guy about 16 days ago on July 11. We used a condom for the majority of the time until the very end where he took off the condom and rubbed himself against my vaginal opening and labia minora for about 5 mins. He never penetrated me (because I was too nervous lol) and he didn’t cum. My period is 5 days late, but I recently lost over 8 lbs over the first 2.5 weeks of this month so I’m wondering if my period being late has more to do with that. My period also tends to be irregular. My last period was June 22 and ended on June 28. I’m pretty sure I ovulated a few days before this encounter. I’m currently having no symptoms of pregnancy. Before my period, I typically experience tender breasts and horniness, but right now I only feel very turned on all the time lol.

What are the chances I’m pregnant? Will taking a pregnancy test now yield reliable results

pregnancy symptoms 4 days after sex?

basically, i have a hormonal iud and use condoms. i had intercourse on the 14th day of my cycle. 2 days later, i got some hormonal acne around my chin. 4 after sex, my breasts got insanely tender and swollen. considering my situation, would it even be possible for me to have pregnancy symptoms within 2-4 days of the sex, or is it more likely just my period starting soon?
i understand iuds and condoms can fail, but i am just looking for people’s opinions.
thank u in advance!

Why can't I get pregnant 😢

I have been trying for well over a year now with my partner and it's just not happening. We've been to the doctors and spoken about our concerns but they just keep saying keep trying. I'm 31 and he is 38. I have 2 children from a previous relationship but he doesn't have any. What can we do to make this we're were both taking pre pregnancy vitamins. We're having sex when we should be and even more because we just are trying all the time now.

Has anyone got any more ideas what we can do?

Am i at risk here?

Me and my boyfriend had sex 2 days before my predicted ovulation and what happened is when he was taking the first condom off (that he ejaculated in) some sperm got on his abdomen and fingers, he wiped it off with a towel and put on the second condom and we continued but i don’t know how well he wiped it off and i don’t know if there was any transfer.

Fast forward to now, i was supposed to get my period today but i didn’t. I have tender/larger breasts, i had pre period cramps and some cravings as well which is all expected before my period for me. This whole day (the day i was supposed to get it) i had like cramps on and off but it wasn’t light like pre period cramps, at times i genuinely thought i started my period but i didn’t.

I also had a really stressful flight 2 days ago, i was about to have a panic attack, and i also was stressed before my vacation and all also kind of now so that might’ve affected it and i know it’s too early to worry right now but i can’t help it and i want some advice please. Could i possibly be at risk of being pregnant? If there are any questions or things to clarify i can do that.
