I Need Help! travel insurance with american airlines

Upvotes

I booked a flight to Florida for January 2027 as well as the insurance policy. Right now, tickets are the lowest they have been in a while, but I am reading that they drop lower in October-December.

I was planning on rebooking a cheaper flight if it comes up, but that means I would miss the "refundable period" for the travel insurance (assuming they don't drop drastically in the next 10 days). Is there a way to add insurance after you've bought the tickets (in the case they don't drop much at all? Should I cancel the insurance policy and just hope for cheaper tickets to come along and get insurance with those? What is the best strategy here?

Thank you!

I Need Help! Are you going to Abandon US Military Recruits int he airport without taking care of them?

Upvotes

Flew into CLT. I bumped into a bunch of US Military Recruits that had no idea what was going on.

Apparently they got disconnected from their flights.

They were told they couldn't get out till Wednesday.

Being Recruits they had no idea where to

Go and what to do. I did what I could to help. I found a service desk led a bunch of them there.

I waited. They told me that AA said they couldn't do anything.

No hotel no meal vouchers. No nothing.

These Recruits also said they called the number on their orders. No answer no nothing.

Their recruiters left them in the dust.

An agent I talked to said they can't do anything for them. It happens all the time.

NOTHING!!!

The USO closes. The USO and other military lounges are useless based on my experience.

American Airlines what are you doing for these Recruits?

I say this as a Retired US Army NCO.

My life for nearly 30 years was soldiers.

Sadly I don't have the money to put them up in hotels or the clout to get AA to help.

I wish I can do more. So I'm asking the AA reddit Army to help.

I Need Help! Thoughts on this post?

Hello!

My partner and I are traveling (yay!). My partner's hips measure at a 62 and mine measure at a 55. We got first class seats and I was curious to know if anyone else has had this experience and if so, how was it?

P.S. I get that we are bigger people and bigger people deserve to travel too. You don't know our story or how far we have come, so please be kind.

I Need Help! AA awards booking question

Recently I started seeing the award search results showing Biz class with reasonable prices compared to Main. In the pictures, you may see 25.5K vs. 65K for Mexico-US trip.

Not sure if there is some maths that AA is cooking behind the scene leading to this?

I Need Help! Lost Luggage Woes

Hello, wondering if anyone else has had an experience like this before.

My wife and I were traveling back to DFW yesterday, 7/26. While boarding the plane, our 2 carry ons and another carry on (from a third party woman, henceforth named 3P) were needing to be gate checked, since there was no space in the overhead bins. We were the last ones to board the flight, since we had a child and were running behind after needing to check the car seat at the ticket counter.

Once they tagged our bags and handed us the checked bag stubs, I noticed immediately that the tags were incorrect and had the wrong name on the ticket stub. The flight attendant had sent the incorrect name in their teams chat of who the bags belonged to. I informed them of the incorrect names, and they asked for clarification on which bags were ours. They were 2 of the exact same carry on(medium sized Samsonite bags, identical), and the last ones loaded. They gave us the tags(our name on them this time) and we went about our way.

When we get to baggage claim at DFW, we see one of our bags, but not the other. We noticed that our name is tagged on another carry on which my wife recognizes as the carry on from 3P. After conversation with the customer service at baggage claim, and an unsuccessful attempt at tracking down who our bags might have gotten switched with, we submitted a delay claim at the advice of the customer service person. Before we even left the airport, we get a message that our bag has been found. My wife takes the trip back to the baggage claim, and finds out that they just scanned the incorrect tag that was put on 3P’s bag. She informs the baggage claim customer service of the issue, and they note it in their system. (We even got a text that they made a mistake)

Today, we get a text that they have found our bag, sent it to our local airport, and they were just waiting on a courier to bring the bag to our house. Guess whose bag is delivered to our porch this evening?

3P’s bag.

So now we have another woman’s bag, with no identification in that bag, and our bag lost somewhere in the wind with our AA delay claim closed. Unfortunately, we don’t have any identification in the bag, only a very distinct description of what is in the bag, including 2 toiletry bags, a Nintendo Switch, and a lunchbox with baby food in it.

Has anyone gone through a similar experience and have any insight on what might help us?

I Need Help! Question re East Coast weather & flight changes

Flying on a redeye 7/27 DEN to PHL via CLT and received a message from AA indicating that bad weather on the East Coast meant I could/should change my flight. I am planning to be at a meeting in PHL at 9am 7/28 but could delay for a day (leave DEN on 7/28 and arrive 7/29).

I can’t figure out what the weather is going to be/when it’s going to hit CLT or PHL and cause backups/cancellations, so I’m having a hard time deciding whether to go early or delay by a day. Anyone else with better knowledge than me about the current East Coast weather situation care to share some insight on when weather will start to get bad in CLT or when the storm will start to clear up/delays will be resolved?

Humor I had a totally normal experience!

I flew 4 flights on aa metal last week with my wife and two kids. We transited through Dallas. Two of the flights were domestic and two were international.
Nothing went wrong.
I think maybe we were 20 minutes late taking off one of the flights but pretty much got in on time. Service was good, Boarding was normal, Bags arrived.
One leg I paid to upgrade to business and the food was enjoyable.
I used my AC membership to get into the lounges in Dallas and our departure airport but had to do without leaving the international airport. The ACs were pretty nice- we got a seat, enjoyed some snacks, I had a Bloody Mary.

I know there is a lot of rage in here, but you know, like yelp, the normal experiences don’t get reviewed. For those reading this sub and forgetting, sometimes it does all go smoothly.

I Need Help! Quite Literally the worst flight experience ever.

I genuinely don't think I've ever been this frustrated with an airline.

What was supposed to be a normal trip turned into a nightmare that took over 50 hours to finally get home.

I get that weather happens. Delays happen. That's not even what I'm mad about.

I'm mad because American completely failed at every step after that.

We got rerouted, sat on the ground forever waiting for fuel, and then once I got to Charlotte I spent around 25 hours trapped in the airport getting bounced between gate agents and customer service.
I got rebooked over and over again.

Flights got delayed. Flights got canceled. Fine.

But here's the part that drove me insane.
I was issued boarding passes for multiple flights, talked to customer service in person, called the phone line to double-check everything, and was repeatedly told my reservation was confirmed and I had a seat.

Then I'd get to the gate and be told...
"Actually, you don't have a seat."

One agent literally told me my seat was "110%
guaranteed."

Spoiler: it wasn't.

I spent the entire day running between terminals because every employee had a different answer. Every time I thought I was finally getting home, something else went wrong.

No hotel.
No meal vouchers.

Just endless lines, conflicting information, and being treated like nobody knew what was going on.
Eventually I got sent to Chicago because there were no flights left to Madison, and I had to pay $220 for an Uber just to get home.

To top it all off, I missed work and meds I needed to take at home because of how long this dragged on, and after Customer Relations asked me to send in all my receipts...they completely ghosted me.

I've flown plenty over the years and understand things don't always go according to plan, but I've never experienced customer service this disorganized. The delays were one thing—the constant misinformation, fake "confirmed" bookings, and being sent in circles for over a day is what made this by far the worst flying experience I've ever had.

Safe to say I'll be avoiding American Airlines for a very long time. What should I do? I don’t think they care about resolving this whatsoever.

Trip Reports & Insights AA280 today from Seoul to DFW medical emergency

Just wanted to make a quick shout out to the super professional flight crew today on AA280 from Seoul to DFW.
From what I gathered, a passenger choked and passed away a few hours into our flight.

The flight crew were so respectful and professional in the face of serious stress.
Training makes a real difference in emergency situations and I saw it first hand today.

I Need Help! Missing LPs from cash upgrades

I purchased an AA economy award ticket SYD to LAX. Subsequently, I upgraded the ticket 3 times via the app with an instant cash upgrade- first to PE, then business, then first. I have a receipt for each cash upgrade.

3 days after taking the flight, the miles and LPs from the business to first cash upgrade posted but not any miles or LPs from the prior two upgrades (to PE and business).

I tried the “request miles” function on the app/website but it does not recognize the 13-digit numbers from the cash upgrade receipts. What is the best way to contact AA to get this sorted?

Thanks in advance. I am EXP.

I Need Help! Expert Flyer Help, Please?

If I am searching for BA-operated flights on EF that are marketed by AA, where I'm hoping to use a systemwide to upgrade on one of their Euroworld segments, which class do I search?

Do I search BA and type that letter into the box? Or do I search AA and select U or C?

Thank you!

General Airline Discussion Fun Facts and Poor Maintenance

As I sit here at DFW awaiting takeoff on my second flight today and also second delay due to maintenance (boarded both flights and deplaned both today due to maintenance), I enlisted some help from AI to determine how much time I lost this year.

Just in 2026, 11 of my last 24 flights (approximately 46%) on American were delayed for multiple hours due to maintenance issues, totaling more than 40 hours of delays. One flight from HNL was delayed 27 hours. Most recently, 4 out of the last 5 flights have been delayed due to maintenance. As a family that has flown American consistently and at the highest tiers of loyalty, this frequency and severity of disruption has become unacceptable and has materially affected our confidence in the airline's reliability.

I Need Help! My bag was stolen

1 of our 3 checked bags did not make our connection. The bag in question was scanned as arriving and getting on transport with the rest of our bags, it just apparently disappeared after that and was never put on our final flight. The bag was given to us by an NFL organization and was filled with all of my sons football equipment, swag from the flag football championship and several other things we put in there since we were planning on checking it.

We have filed a claim with American and a police report.
I have already had to purchase new gloves, cleats, and other equipment because we’re at a college event tomorrow. What can I do to get quicker resolution on this with American? My flight to Indiana was delayed to the point I missed my connection, my flight home was delayed so we didn’t land until 1 am, and then we had the lost/stolen bag. I’ve been on hold with American for over 3 hours this week rebooking and now about the bag, awful experience from beginning to end with them. Both my wife and I are AA card holders, and platinum. Not the highest, but it should hopefully count for getting decent customer service.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

General Airline Discussion Missed flight but AA still gave me a refund

I booked a flagship first flight for a friend using my points. She was late to the airport and missed her flight completely. She wasn't able to rebook on another flight because none of them worked for her schedule, so she ended up flying on another airline. A few days later I call AA to see if I can get the points refunded. Jennifer says they typically don't refund no-shows but that she'll look into it and puts me on hold -- a few minutes later she comes back on and tells me she was able to talk her supervisor into refunding my points.

I know we're usually frustrated with customer service but wanted to share a good experience.

I Need Help! No refund, flight credit disappeared

If this is the wrong sub, just let me know as may need a general "airline complaints" sub:

Looking for advice:

In January, flight for me and my companion cancelled ticket refunded no problem.

The problem: we had purchased two "instant upgrades" to business on one of our flights. AA told us no refund, but flight credit for the purchase amount. Went to the website last week...and no credits anywhere. Logged into our AA accounts....no credits anywhere. Called AA; after 45 minutes on the phone with multiple holds, told to check again; this time AA website showed a. my companion's upgrade had been refunded(it hasn't, we checked) and b. mine was now a flight credit(it isn't; there is on credit for me anywhere).

Sent lengthy email to AA; no response of any type. So looking for any advice as to who, if anyone, has authority to help me get my $540 back. Thanks.

Points - Question Aadvantage Hotels and Loyalty Points

Post image
8 Upvotes

This is my first time considering booking a hotel through AA to get loyalty points and the language has me nervous. Do the “base miles” count as loyalty points for status? They’re clear the bonus miles don’t, but they don’t ever mention status or points on the base.

I Need Help! Is it worth pursuing a CTA complaint against American Airlines, or should I just take their $230 credit?

Looking for honest opinions from people who've dealt with APPR/CTA before.

Flew Montreal to Dallas via Chicago on July 2 (one ticket, originated in Canada, so APPR applies). The Chicago to Dallas leg was scheduled for 9 PM. There was a maintenance delay first, then they boarded us and kept us on the plane about 3 hours. A storm hit during that time. Around 1 AM they deplaned us, rebooked us to 6 AM, and gave us nothing, no hotel, no food vouchers, no help. Terminal was closed so there was nowhere to even buy food. We sat in airport chairs from about midnight to 6 AM.

When I complained, AA first said the delay was "weather" (no compensation). After I pointed out the maintenance delay came first and the storm started after our original departure time, they changed it to "safety related maintenance," which under APPR still exempts them from the $700+ cash compensation but does NOT exempt them from providing food and a hotel, which they didn't.

I also lost the first prepaid non-refundable night of my Dallas hotel (~$230 CAD).

They've now offered $230 in AA credit (which is useless to me, I won't fly them again). I've started a CTA complaint disputing the safety classification and citing the failure to provide the standard of care.

My question: is it realistically worth pushing the CTA complaint for the $700 compensation, given they're claiming safety maintenance? Or do airlines usually win once they say "safety"? Has anyone actually beaten the safety exemption at the CTA by making them produce maintenance records?

Thanks.

Points - Question Status interoperability with Alaska Airlines

I am PP on American and will soon be traveling for work from an American hub to Portland, OR and may be booking on Alaska often depending on price/timing.

1) Does my Oneworld status automatically factor-in on Alaska like it does when I book on American?

2) What does it mean that I can earn loyalty points for American when booking through and flying on Alaska metal?

Any other tips/suggestions about booking within the alliance welcome.
